Ease your winter heating bill with a call to your plumbing and heating contractor (ARA) - Winter will soon bring plenty of cold and snowy weather. Families will turn up the thermostat, add an extra blanket to the beds, and hit the local home improvement store for needed supplies to seal windows and doors. Unfortunately most won’t call their local plumbing and heating contractor. While homeowners annually dread seeing those winter utility bills roll in, they don’t give their heating system much thought until it needs to be repaired or replaced. Annual preventative maintenance is always better than dealing with the alternative. If your contractor determines that your boiler or furnace needs to be replaced, they will do a heat loss and sizing calculation to determine the size (BTU’s) required to heat your home. Your contractor should be able to provide a good, better and best equipment choice to suit your budget and desired efficiency level. Be sure to use a reputable contractor and ask for references. When you weigh costs, understand that your investment goes well beyond the initial cost of the system. Your old low efficiency heating system could have an annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) of 70 percent. That means 70 percent of the energy in the fuel becomes heat for the home and the other 30 percent escapes up the chimney and elsewhere. With the old inefficient heating equipment you have, you could be throwing away up to 30 percent of the money you spend on fuel each year. Most of us won’t be able to fight winter blues with a tropical getaway or a spa weekend. But there is an easy, convenient way to give yourself an emotional boost during the winter, and do something good for nature at the same time: feed wild birds. More than 65 million Americans have tried bird feeding, according to a recent Census Report. Bird feeding is an easy and enjoyable hobby for people of any age, ability and skill level. Whether you’re new to bird feeding or a seasoned pro, here are some tips to help you enjoy a successful, mutually beneficial relationship with your backyard birds this winter:

Figuring out feeders The type of feeder you use is important. To attract the greatest number of species, you’ll need to provide different types of feeders and feed choices. Hopper and platform designs are always popular, but whatever feeders you use during winter should have a few features in common: * A wide cover over feeding ports, perches and dispensing trays will help prevent feed from being buried by snowfall. The cover should extend several inches over the feeder edge to ensure protection from all but the worst storms. * Place feeders in sheltered locations out of severe winds. Placing feeders close to the house, or using window feeders, both
