Bar Star Cattle BAR STAR CATTLE WELCOME
“We do things differently.”
A bull customer who has been buying bulls for almost a decade from us reminded me recently that in my first conversation with him that I said that, and that he appreciated that. What does that mean? In the nearly twenty years of breeding Hereford cattle together, Steph and I have always decided to do things our own way. We’ve had a determination to keep a direction in our herd and our breeding philosophies (which we feel are quite different that most outfits simply selling bulls). In genetic selection we are extremely picky on bulls that we use to generate these bulls that sell annually, and this set is a great example of that. As you look across the sire groups offered, we hope you can study the cattle and see the direction we have. We are extremely proud that we own the majority of the sires used in this year’s offering.
We develop them differently. Any of you that have been to the ranch (and those that haven’t are welcome any time) know that we aren’t situated near a big feed pile but rather are blessed to have some good grass country and shade during the summer. We run our purebred cows as most commercial guys do (and even rougher than some commercial operations). Our fall born bulls are weaned and sent to grass once they quit bawling. This slow development over the summer helps build muscle and strong feet and leg structure, whereas some aged bulls that are sold never leave the feedlot from the time they are weaned. In the fall, once the spring calves are weaned they are all developed on a Hubbard Feeds developer pellet that is formulated to keep feet as hard as possible, and good hard muscled gain on the cattle. For dry matter they are grown on native, dryland, long stem grass hay. We develop them in a big lot where they have plenty of room to move and aren’t bogged down. We heavily bed with straw as it makes my stomach due flips to see cattle with manure tags up to their tailheads, packing extra excessive weight that is hard on joints. We strive to produce bulls that hit green grass and explode and hold up after turnout.
The one thing that we haven’t detoured from is “keeping a sharp knife.” You will note that we are selling a few less head in the 2025. That’s a double-sided sword this year in that we continue to steer those that we feel that we wouldn’t use in our commercial herd. This standard of quality is something that we are proud of and that annually close to half of our male crop ends up being sent to a feedlot as steers. This year we are retaining ownership on all of those calves to further prove some of our genetics. The other side of the sword this year is that we had a larger number of embryo females which gives fewer bulls to select from but only adds to the strength of our herd going forward by propagating our top cow’s genetics back into the heart of our brand.
The future is impossible to predict, but what an exciting time it is to be in the cattle business. The most important thing we feel about how things look in the big picture of the industry going forward is that the commercial cow calf sector is going to have to do more with less. The cow herd in the US, and around the world really for that matter continues to struggle to rebuild numbers. We as an industry are going to have to keep fertility and muscle in the forefront of our selection criteria because in order to meet demands of the consumer while having less head, we can’t do it without it. What better time than now to tie into some stout, wide made Hereford bulls to stay ahead in the game and be staged for continued efficiency. The black baldie cow here is a great example of doing more with less. She eats 20% less than her straightbred or purebred counterparts, her brothers weaned 10-25% heavier, and she has the precedent of being the queen of fertility and longevity. Cows that stay, pay!
The future of Bar Star is dedicated to continued quality, and we hope to offer a greater number of bulls to select from in the upcoming years. Our fall calving program has finally started to grab a good hold, and we are slowly but steadily growing this part of our program. We promise this, however, we will not waiver from our commitment to providing our customers a product that we would turn out on our own cows. Please join us on or before March 20, 2025 and view the bulls. While you are here hop in the ranger or swing a leg over a horse and come look at our cows that power our operation.

B DISTINCT — Sire of Lot 1

A unique bull for the breed out of one of the legendary Hereford cows and a sire that’s red hot
We bought a portion of his sire in 2019 as a yearling and the bull resold through Huth’s dispersal in November for $75K as a coming 5-year-old!
With a DISTINGUISHED proven pedigree on both sides for maternal quality, and a scripted EPD profile as complete and well written as any with unique highlights of top 1% teat and udder while still being top 10% carcass, top 3% $CHB and a top 20% $BMI, we feel this bull can make a major impact in the breed Without any Revolution, Endure, 10Y, 8Y, M326 … the list goes on and on … this one can be used on a lot of bloodlines
