As I write this I have just returned from services for the late Sam Hunter, a longtime friend and fellow Hereford breeder. Just this spring he purchased a bull from us and I had a nice visit with him. Being just shy of 80 years old and making a living based on raising Hereford cattle he had a lot to say about the attributes of Herefords and his philosophy about staying the course when others didn’t. Sam wasn’t ashamed to share his opinion and had a steadfast approach to anything he was involved in. Those that knew him realized the acumen he had when it came to livestock and his opinion mattered. The big take from this conversation is that it is an opportunity to raise Herefords and be involved from the once prominent side, to the downside and the return of the breed to its favorable status, with cattlemen and ladies nationwide- especially with the crossbreeding of black stock that has gained prominence again.
We now have the objective data to make claims about our breed when we market our registered stock as well the carcass traits that are needed to promote Hereford influenced cattle on the commercial and market side of the equation. In addition to all of this we have a breed of cattle that is easy on the eyes. I hear from seasoned veterans like Sam and the new breeders alike when they see the first Herefords unloaded in their pastures- What a beautiful, mind easing and pleasurable sight to these red and white cattle walking the green grass. Then there is the added benefit of turning that grass into a valuable and needed product- beef for the consumer both here and abroad.
This year we will again offer what I believe to be some of the best and efficient cattle that will be offered anywhere. If you check our previous sales you will see the continued increase in carcass merit and all the market indexes. We see the need to stay the course and comply with whatever the market demands. Our goal is to continually improve and I think we have once again followed thru with this year’s offering.
Again this year we will have animals sold with the net proceeds going to the Disabled Veterans of America, Saint Judes Children Hospital and the orphanage Hoffman Homes for Youth. Help out with this if you can.
If you need lodging please book as early as possible since with the Apple Harvest Festival and other Gettysburg tourist events scheduled rooms will go quickly. Again Friday evening preceding the sale on Saturday we will have dinner and music for anyone that can make it fit their schedule. Thanks for your interest and I hope to see you at this Year’s “Breeders Classic.”
