On behalf of Frederickson Ranch, we invite you to our 15th annual production sale at the ranch west of Spearfish, SD. As we wrap up 2024, I think it’s safe to say that we all had the fortune of selling cattle at record high prices. We thought we all had seen the top, of the market back in midJuly; however, it’s exciting to see the prices at the sale barn this fall rally back and nearly reach those same levels. Contrary to the high prices, we can’t say the same for the weather this year. Most of us experienced some sort of drought this summer and a few customers personally dealt with the severe fires that ravaged across the tri-state area this summer and fall.
Frederickson Ranch will be offering 170 + Angus and Hereford bulls, along with a select group of Hereford-bred females. We will again offer both yearling and 2-year-old bulls, giving our customers different options to choose. We market two breeds, providing you with the option of crossbreeding to capture the value of heterosis. We strongly feel that the Hereford /Angus cross is the ultimate choice, when it comes to crossbreeding. It provides you market topping steers and a baldie female that the rancher has come to love and demand. We have spent the past three decades building a program based on efficient, lower maintenance, problem free genetics. We pride ourselves on producing functional, balanced cattle, that not only thrive in our short grass limited feed environment; but go on to produce a product that cattle feeders demand.
Frederickson Ranch strongly believes in delivering exceptional customer service by providing avenues to help customers add to their bottom line. The basis of our whole marketing program has been built on building relationships and connecting with customers. We continue to build and expand our relationships with feedyards in Nebraska, Minnesota, South Dakota and Iowa, that are looking for high quality, reputation feeder cattle. This part of our business continues to grow as we assist in the marketing and placement of several thousand of our customers feeder calves. At Frederickson Ranch, we not only want to provide you with superior genetics, but a program that stands behind its customers and helps them achieve optimum profitability. We know your time is very valuable; however, we urge you to visit us after the sale or next spring to see if there is any way we can help market your calves to their highest potential. As we know, our success and sustainability depends on yours.
The bulls and females are available any time for viewing at the Ranch. We invite you to stop by for a visit, look at the bulls and make a drive through the cow herd or head on over to our website to learn more about our program.
This year we will again be providing great food, and fellowship on the Friday night before the sale, along with complimentary tri-tip steak on sale day! We invite you to make a weekend pre-Christmas getaway and take in the wonderful venues the Northern Black Hills has to offer.
- Nate, Jayna, Teegan & Tiernan • Mark & Mary Kay
Join us Friday evening for a pre-sale social and supper. A true pasture to plate experience from our friends at Upper Iowa Beef. This is the processing plant in Northern Iowa that works with a group of feeders that purchase and feed several groups of customer calves. We will be serving Upper 2/3 choice tenderloin steaks with all the fixings. Plan to look at the bulls in the afternoon and join us Friday evening for great food and fellowship.

About Our Program
FREDERICKSON RANCH OFFERS TWO AGE GROUPS OF BULLS. This is done by design to not only provide our customers with two different age groups of bulls, but it also allows us to break up our calving due to labor and pasture constraints. The yearling bulls are primarily a product of our embryo transfer program and first calf heifers. The embryo calves are out of our commercial cows that summer on National Forest permits. Due to constraints getting cows tightly bred in the forest we expose them for 40 days before they head up in the middle of June. It is also more advantageous to have an older calf in the forest since the cattle travel a very large area. In addition, we calve the majority of our first calf heifers in February giving us a nice group of yearling calving ease heifers bull candidates. The older bulls in the sale are a product of our registered cows that calve in March and April. As you will notice in the sale book weaning weights will vary between the two programs. The embryo calves will have a definite advantage in weaning weights due to environmental conditions. The cows in the forest have to fight less heat, flies and always seem to have an abundance of grass.
BULLS ARE ALL DEVELOPED RIGHT HERE AT THE RANCH. The bull calves are weaned in late August and put on a high roughage growing ration through the sale. After the sale we will back the bulls down and shoot for around a 2 lb. ADG. The yearling bulls will then be semen tested and delivered after April 1st.
The 2-year-old bulls are weaned around the first of November and put on a 2.5 lb. ADG grower ration through the spring. They are then turned out to pasture for 3 months and then brought back into the feedlot around Sept 1st. They will then be fed a 44 mg/cal diet to shine them up for sale day. 2-year-old bulls will be delivered shortly after the sale.
As you will notice we do not write any footnotes on the bulls selling, WE FEEL THE CATTLE CAN SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES. I feel I can get very repetitious, there is only so many times you can say a bull is out of an easy fleshing, good uddered cow. We also want you to know that we not just trying to sell you an individual animal, but a program. A PROGRAM THAT IS VERY DISCIPLINED IN PROVIDING HIGH QUALITY GENETICS THAT WORK FOR YOU.
We sincerely thank our valued customers for the past 14 years!

Pyramid Candor 9139 sold in our 2020 sale to Coyote Ridge Ranch in Colorado. After seeing his progeny there, we decided to bring him back into our program, to carry on the consistency of the Daybreak line that has done so well for us. Candor progeny are densemade, heavy muscled cattle, that are moderate in frame, yet still exhibit plenty on performance, with plenty of rib shape. Candor is a balanced trait sire, with daughters that are the kind you want to build a herd around; while producing the baldy steer calves feeders demand. Both his mother and full sister are very productive and some of the best cows on our ranch.

Great Plains was purchased from Topp Herefords in 2022. Great Plains has done an excellent job of producing the rancher’s kind. They are big, stout, rugged bulls that have length, muscle, and growth making him the ideal cow to put on moderate framed Angus cows. They are the kind that will add more pounds at weaning. Great Plains is homozygous polled and marked very well. His dam is a great producer for Topp Herefords and falls in our qualifications, of what we feel a great cow should look like. We will calve his first daughters this spring. 17 sons sell in both the yearling and two-year-old division.

ECR Extra Fortify 1052 was purchased from Fawcett’s Elm Creek Ranch in 2022. Fortify sires cattle with excellent muscle shape and more moderate in frame. If looking to make a lot of easy fleshing, smaller framed, baldy females this is your sire. We will calve his first females this spring.
Churchill Majestic 903G was used AI as a homozygous polled calving ease sire. He consistently sires low birth cattle with extra pigment and adequate muscle, shape and performance. We will calve the first daughters this spring. His mother was a great producer for Churchill Cattle company producing several herd sires around the country.

Highland sires cattle with excellent muscle shape, depth of body and still a very consistent calving ease sire. Highland is unique, in the fact that he transmits more eye pigment than any other Hereford sire we have used to date. Use Highland sons to moderate cow size, improve udder quality and muscle shape all while maintaining performance. Several daughters are retained in our herd.

Pyramid Coal Train 0005 was retained in 2020 as our pick of the U2 Coalition sons. He continues the legacy of his sire by adding muscle shape and power. Coal Train’s biggest attribute is his ability to add length of body and performance with less birth weight than his sire Coalition. We have used Coal Train on heifers the past three years with great success. His mother was a true gem of a cow, perfect uddered, great feet, and unmatched fleshing ability. We calved over 30 daughters of Coal Train this spring, they are great mothers, easy to work with and their udder quality was outstanding. Coal Train will again highlight our 2-year-old division with over a dozen sons selling. Coal Train currently records birth ratio of 98 and a weaning ratio of 101. We feel Coal Train best exemplifies a balanced trait sire. The majority of his sons are suitable for heifers while having enough performance to later be used on mature cows.

We added this sire to our operation because of his muscle shape, length of body and excellent structure and foot quality. Chiefton is out of one of the most prepotent Angus cows at Thiel Ranch and possibly the breed. He has already produced three herd sires working for prominent registered herds throughout the country. Chiefton sons will highlight this year’s yearling division with over 20 sons selling. They have greatly exceeded expectations when it comes to performance, structure and eye appeal. Use Chiefton sons to add pounds at weaning, improve foot quality, and produce productive replacement females to bring back into the herd.

Moderate frame, dense- made cattle, with excellent muscle shape. We used him in both our ET program and the main cow herd; therefore, we will be having several sons in the next couple of sales. We will be selling around a dozen sons this year. While we are very pleased with the yearling bulls; we are even more excited about the full sisters to these bulls. A Frederickson Ranch, we strive to have it all, but as most of you know and have experienced, that is a very hard task and unrealistic to achieve. There is always give and take. More calving ease means less muscle, more performance means more inputs, more fleshing ability means more fat cover, etc. With that being said, the one thing we are not willing to give on is the maternal ability of the mother cow. At the end of the day, she is what drives the sustainability of our ranch and yours for generations to come. Her ability to breed back, raise a heavy calf year after year with minimal input and labor, is what this business is all about. Sometimes we are all guilty of making things too complicated and at the end of the day, this business is pretty simple. We hope to see you on December 7, 2024!
