Wow what a great time to be in the cattle industry. Feed is still really short in the Southern part of Alberta, parts of Sask and BC but cattle prices for Fats, Feeders and also the cow/calf producer are at all time highs. Due to the feed shortage, cow numbers are still on the decline which helps to ensure cattle prices will be strong for a while. Now is a good time to evaluate where we’re at both as individual breeders and as a breed. I think we can all agree, we need to help ensure our cow/calf producers will get better dollars when marketing their Hereford steers and still maintain that great easy doing and feed efficient Hereford cow we all love. The good news is, I think we’re well on our way of accomplishing just that. Carcass seems to be the new buzz word and rightly so. We must ensure both straight bred Herefords and those crossed with other breeds will hit the packing houses with bigger rib-eyes and more marbling. This will help all parts of our industry. The packers are forever short of AAA beef. This summer was probably the biggest shortage of high marbled beef ever, especially in Canada. June, July and August, small retail outlets could not buy premium beef from the packers at any cost. By the time they filled their orders to the big grocery chains, there was just none available. As soon as the packers realize Herefords will help with this shortage, the discount now experienced by our cow/calf producers will disappear. The good news is, we have a lot of Hereford bulls that will help in both increasing rib-eye and add marbling. I strongly believe marbling and maternal for the most part go hand in hand. Dairy cattle have a lot of marbling, just no rib-eye. This is our second year with our NEW Direction program of drastically increasing carcass without losing maternal, performance and easy doing/feed efficient Hereford cattle. As you study this year’s offering, you can see a higher increase in carcass traits along with increased maternal and performance while lowing birth weight. The cool thing is most of our 2023 calves are out of 2 year old heifers and I know this is the best group we’ve had for years. I think our maternal is coming along with our carcass. Both in our Herd Bull prospects and Show Heifer calf prospect offering, we have more with great carcass and outstanding EPDs than ever before. But, if you throw out the numbers and just evaluate them from the ground up, you will find by far the biggest, stoutest and most correct bulls we’ve offered. Then, our heifer calves are also the deepest we’ve had. I’ve always loved this breed, but now I’m more excited than ever cause of these new carcass bulls that we have available. We signed a meat contract last fall with our Korean friend Mr. Park. They need Canadian AAA Farm raised beef to compete with the Kobe and Wagu beef. We’re excited to report the last 2 months, their volume has tripled and we’re batting over 94% AAA and prime out of just under 2000 head. The best news I can report is that with this last load, 135 head were mostly Hereford cattle with high carcass data and we only had 4 AA. The rest were AAA and high just over 97%. I really am excited for the future of both the cattle industry and our role as Hereford producers in this industry. We really can make a difference. We must evaluate where we’re at and then find the Hereford cattle that will help us get there. The most incredible thing I’ve learned this year is, we can have great carcass cattle without sacrificing the quality we’re raising and we can do it a lot quicker than I ever dreamt. Please join us November 30th. I am anxious to have your accessement of our offering and the direction we are trying to go.

Why new direction and carcass

We’re committed to improving on the traits that keep our Hereford cow one of the most efficient cows in the industry. But NOW IS THE TIME to improve our carcass quality. Most slaughter cattle are sold on the rail. There is a huge discount between yield grade 1(Y1) and yield grade 5 (Y5) If both carcass weights are the same when we sell the Y1 compared to the Y5 at Hirsche Meats through our meat counter, we get almost $500 more for the Y1. There are too many Y5s in our breed.

Y1

Our commitment is to improve carcass quality and still maintain our mother cow. 2 major tools used to help in our commitment, (1) Ultrasound and (2) EPDs, especially Geo EPDs.

Y5

Ultrasound Explained Ultrasound Data – What do the numbers mean? (Rod Wendorff) All Carcass measurements are taken between the 12th & 13th ribs which is the industry standard. • Ribeye Area (REA)is the size of the loin muscle in square inches (in^2). • Percent Lean Meat Yield (%LMY) is what percent of the carcass is lean muscle. • Backfat (BF) is the thickness of fat covering the loin muscle in mm. • PFat (Percent Intermuscular Fat/Marbling) 9 + is Prime, 4 to 9 is AAA/Choice, 2 to 4 is AA/Select, < 2 is A/Standard All bulls will have ultrasound data available sale day

GEO EPDs Explained GEO EPDS Our herd bull prospects and show prospect heifer calves are Genomic Enhanced. Our commitment is to provide as accurate of data as possible for us and our customers. GEO EPDs Explained: Genomic testing provides a map of the animal’s genome at over 30,000 different places across the Genome. From this map the animal’s genetic merit as a parent can be estimated. GE EPDs are available for genotyped animals, and are a blend of both genotypic (DNA) and phenotypic (what we can see and measure) information to better predict a greater portion of the genetic potential for that animal. Genomics holds the greatest value for economically important traits that are difficult to measure, and increases accuracy in young sires. Genomic information on a young sire is the equivalent of 8 to 20 progeny. The increased accuracy of Genomics can help you double the rate of genetic gain in your herd.

Neon and Rambo were identified early in their life as something special and went on to be industry changers. Eclipse is following that same pattern. Shortly after his birth, we found him to be unique, emphasizing more muscle and power. We then watch him grow into one of the best calves we have raised and sold that fall, 1/2 interest for $80,000. He then went on to be one of our best show bulls ever, winning many major shows. But most important, he has proven that show bulls can be breeding bulls also. His calves are some of the best ever. Muscle, power, style. This is our 3rd year of calving his daughters and they are unbelievable. There are great mothers, they calve easy and like their babies right after birth. Udder quality is # 1 with tons of milk. We love them.

Blockbuster has done both with his heifers and his bulls being the top sire group last year, and this year, they are in the top again, especially on the female side. I love the power, size and style his progeny have. But probably the best thing about Blockbuster is how his carcass numbers just keep getting better. He’s one of our only sires that has all 4 carcass traits in the top 50% of the breed and 3 in the top 30, with REA top 4% and marbling still top 30. 2 traits we select hard for. His dam 315Y is where all the power comes from, and his sire Denver Champion Stock Option adds the growth, hair and style. We will keep using this great sire for years to come.

I’ve ranked this guy as our best Eclipse son since birth. His dam is our great 171Z donor cow. Maternal sister is also a donor cow, 578G and had a heifer calf and bull calf in last year’s sale. Another maternal brother is working at Wyoming Hereford Ranch True Grit 47G. One most of her sons was used in our program as well as at Parkview. My 2 most productive cows are this guy’s mother and grandmother. We really like his calves. There are a couple of his sons that sell as herd bull prospects in this sale. He caught a rare virus last summer and died. One of my worst days. A real loss.

Insight more for our 2024 calf crop than any other sire by far. Brent Meeks has as many calves from Insight this spring as any and ranks them his # one sire group. We were done AI last year when we got his semen, so only have a couple in this sale, but they look pretty impressive especially several of our young show prospect heifer calves. Only one bull calf and I think he will be the sleeper of the sale. Mid march and has a huge rib-eye. You all know I believe, we must put more carcass in our cattle without giving up growth and maternal. This guy will offer all. 3 birth EPD and 123 Yearling weight and 72 weaning, milk 24, with total maternal 60, but for me I love his carcass. 3 of the 4 traits are top 1% of the breed. The only one lacking is a little more fat that’s ideal for carcass yield grade, but it will help on your cow herd being easy keeping, a trait we don’t talk enough about. He is ranking top 1% for scrotal size. Too many of our bulls today are going the wrong direction in this trait and he will fix it. He will also mark them red with lots of pigment. Every once in awhile things mesh just right and you get a great one that even out breeds himself. This is one of those. Everyone of his calves is outstanding. He will almost always improve the cow he is bred to. Little Fort Herefords bought a piece of this guy with Andersons and both report, their best calf crop ever. They’re big, long and thick with tons of pigment and look at his marbling. Top 20% and is ranked #1 on RFI as well. We’ll be excited to see how his offspring does on RFI.

that really matter. Calving ease top 6% of the breed, maternal calving ease top 1%, udder score top 1 %, teat score 1% and then look at the pigment and longevity. Her mother, 270Z is still here and produced a young heifer calf that is a May and still in the top. One of 28B’s daughters is our a top 2 year old and was the high seller to Parkview in 2021. Just look at the bulls we have flushed her to. They will add carcass and growth. She will add calving ease , maternal and pigment. Feet are also something her and her mother excel in. Mother is 12 and has show feet.

The $65,000 High Seller in the Churchill Bull Sale to Sommers Herefords and the Birdwell Ranch.Desperado is a marbling superstar with top 1% growth, carcass weight, and both Baldy Maternal and CHB indexes. He was born unassisted out of a beautiful two year old heifer with a great udder.

Line-One bull we selected on maternal calving ease and he is a trait leader in Weaning, Yearling, Milk, Total maternal, Teat size, and still has Carcass being a trait leader in REA and Carcass weight. The embryos out of this mating will give lots of options.

It’s easy to say best group ever, but this time it’s also easy to justify such a statement. They are big, powerful calves with by far the best EPD profile ever. But the most power fact is that there’s about 10 of these guys I really would like to use in our program. Their dams are outstanding.

best 315Y daughter. We can’t write a pedigree any better than this. 132F is bigger and even has a better udder than her mother our great 315Y. 132F has 4 brothers working in our herd with only one having daughters old enough to be producing, Eclipse 27E, and you have seen how perfect the Eclipse udders are. I really think this guy will produce power, but will leave a cow herd that is easy doing with outstanding udders and put much needed carcass into our herd. Dave Dennis keeps saying how hard it is to get a show bull that also has carcass. Well, I think we have one. I don’t know how well he’s going to show, but I know he’s the kind I want to raise. He’s big, powerful, marked well with bone and big testicles. His EPD profile is really similar to his sire Elijah. 15 traits in the top 50%, 11 top 12%. Weaning and Yearling both top 2% with milk and maternal top 6% and SC top 12%. But Carcass is what I’m the most excited about. 3 of the 4 carcass traits are top 12%. The only one negative is fat, which means not as good for yield grade, but his daughters should be easy doing. He’s top 1% for carcass size, 6% for marbling and 12% for Rib-eye. I like this guy alot.

POLLED WOW! Here he is. Maybe our top 315Y son yet. He is really, really good. Probably our #1 calf. Lot 8, his 7/8’s brother is the only one that can give him a run for his money. 2 powerful calves both out of Elijah, plus 2 of the best cows to back them up. Power Pak really fits today’s bill. It’s fitting that our top heifer calf, lot 13, is his flushmate. Both have exceptional numbers. He’s big and powerful with tons of performance, really wide based with lots of depth and huge testicles. He’s the kind that can fix a lot of problems in one’s cow herd. I’ve learned over the years, the best breeding bulls are the ones with powerful cows in their pedigree. Just look at this guy’s mother and grandmother. His dam has out produced any cow on our farm hands down. Then consider his sire’s mother. She ranks as one of the top cows in the great Hoffman herd. They just sold a flush in her for $15,000 and in their 2022 sale, her 4 sons grossed over $250,000. Elijah’s full ELIJAH: Sire to Lot 8, 11, 12, 13, & 40 brother, Thomas County is siring the top calves at Hoffman and Stellpflug. They will be features in their fall sale. Power Pak is a perfect example that carcass bulls don’t have to be frail and fine boned. He ranks in the top 15% for REA. Marbling, & carcass wt, and top top 2% for weaning and yearling wt, with top 5% scrotal, milk top 25% and TM top 8%. He really checks all the boxes. It’s going to be fun to show a power carcass bull this fall.

Smooth Polled This is quite a cross. A Paternal brother to 87L Lot 8 and out of our Elite 315Y cow, mother of Eclipse. She has made such an impact in our herd and the industry. This will be one of her last sons to sell and he is every bit as powerful as his maternal brothers. This guy drew the short end of the straw when it came to a receip mother, but he is exploding now that he is weaned. He has an even better EPD profile than 87L on udder, carcass fat and birth weight. This guy is a diamond in the rough. We would be happy to use him in our program.

He is a 3/4 brother to 106L. This heifer reminds me of her mother 315Y probably as much as any of her progeny. She will make a show cow, but more important is the influence she can have as a producing female with these kind of EPDs and they are genomic so not much change down the road. HORNED Show prospect heifer This is our very first great granddaughter out of our 315Y cow. Her mother 69J is a show 2 year old as well as being shown with her mother 132F as a heifer calf. 315Y was also shown many times. All these cows were not only show cows, but all have been in the winner’s circle as cows, so you know udder quality is running pretty deep here. 5L was Reserve calf champion at the Red White Classic this summer, shown by our granddaughter Rory. She’s ultra thick and shows all the attributes of 315Y. Look at her teat placement as a heifer calf. I would wager, she will be a show cow down the road. EPDs are nice as well with 3 carcass traits in top 50% and 2 top 15%. Milk and total maternal also top 25% with weaning and yearling top 20%. This one is definitely one to have fun showing for a couple of years and then watch her become one of your top producing cows. She’s extra quiet and would be great for a young junior. Rory and her became best friends.

HOMOZYGOUS POLLED WOW what at find. 116G is the right kind. She was a great one when we bought her as a feature heifer calf from Chad, but now she’s one of a kind. She has checked all the right boxes. Only an April baby and still caught AI and produced us 44L, a real Herd Bull prospect that we’re going to use a lot. She has a perfect udder with a .32 milk. Then after working this hard, she is also taking care of herself and has lot of condition with no extra feed. She’s done all this on her own and it looks like she caught back AI to Insight. Wow, I can’t hardly wait to see this cross. You know it’s EPDs will be off the charts and then we can flush her to your choice of sires. Her mother flushes well and with her fertility, I am expecting she will flush extra well. Just take a look at her EPDs 18 out of 19 traits in the top 40%. The only one on the left side is fat and as stated before, I think it’s a toss up which side you want fat to be on. For carcass, we want it on the right side as it helps with yield grade, but for easy doing, we need fat. She’s easy doing, marbling top 3% & REA still top, 18% FMI top 1%, MPI top 10% udder score top 10% and total maternal top 10%. Then look at birth, top 25% with an impressive 1.8 and weaning growth #s are still on the top side. All I know is one will drive along ways to find one better and then a lot longer to find one with her numbers and finally to be able to produce a calf like this one the first try. HOMOZYGOUS POLLED Herd Bull Prospect Here’s the last of our Justice 4J calves and the polled industry will love this guy’s pedigree. His dam was my pick at the Haroldson’s 2021 sale where we paid $14,000 for her as a heifer calf. Her pedigree is second to none. Dam is out of the famous Haroldson Marble cow and Sire Genesis. A flushmate to 116J was their high selling calf to Medonte at that sale. I couldn’t be happier with our fortune. We were hoping to get a new outcross donor cow and were lucky enough to get this one. Perfect udder with tons of milk and fertility. She’s only an April heifer and had a February 2 calf. She bred back again AI for the spring of 2023. His Geo EPDs are back and he is as advertised. Top 1% for marbling, Carcass Wt. 5% and REA top 8%. Then look at the rest of his EPDs. I can’t raise one much better on paper, but on the ground he is probably as impressive, moderate, but thick with class and lots of testicles. Hair and pigment are also very much an asset. Recommended for heifers. Sale terms to be announced. He will be my AI heifer bull for next spring.

POLLED Herd bull prospect. I like this guy alot on paper and especially on the ground. Was thinking of showing him with his young 2 year old dam, so you know the kind of udder and milk she has. She’s a Stock Option out of a Nitro Design Female. Really nice set of EPDs with a .09 birth and 30 milk, but where he really excels is in REA and marbling. Top 3% for marbling and top 15% for REA. Pretty incredible, maybe some of the best for a Canadian Bull. These are Geo EPDs, so they are pretty accurate. Only carcass in the red is fat and as stated before, that’s not all bad especially on bulls you’re keeping females from and this Dam 79L guy should produce #1 females. 12L is probably our classiest calf with tons of muscle. Recommended for heifers. I would love to see a bunch of baldies out of this guy.

HORNED Owned with Autumn Tanner Another true herd bull prospect. Owned with our granddaughter, Autumn. It’s her first one to sell helping with her college fund. Buster 10L, is showing with his mother 16J. They, as a pair are one of our very best ever. 16J herself had an amazing show year as a bred heifer, winning the Alberta Junior Show Heifer Division. She’s now even better as a 2 year old. She’s our top Eclipse female that one only wishes to have a herd of. Big, powerful with ton’s of milk and a perfect udder. Her disposition is second to none. Buster follows his mother in that area as well and yet they are both very proud and keep their heads up. Both are marked perfect with 100% eye pigment and good hair. He has a pretty impressive EPD profile as well, with 3 carcass traits top 30, milk and total maternal. Top 9% and yearling also top 8%. His sire Dominate 308F, is our feature sire this year with more bull calves in the sale than any and this guy is close to the top.

HORNED 3 Flushmate Herd Bull Prospects Not sure which one will be the best in the long run. Entered 24L to show, but as things progress, might substitute one of the other brothers. They are all that powerful. All 3 posses as much thickness as any we’ve raised and extreme length as well. Sire is the Stuber Denver Champion Dominate 308F. He’s probably our over all top sire group especially in the power department. All 3 are really well marked with great hair and pigmentation. Their EPD profile ranks them all in the top 15% for growth, milk and total maternal with REA and Carcass top 30. Dam is one of our best Rock Solid daughters out of our Sensation 59D cow and Uptown on the bottom. 29F was perfect uddered with huge pigment and great hair and great body depth. This was a great flush. All 3 of these will add performance and power. By sale day, these 3 will be my heaviest calves with as much potential as any. She has a perfect udder and is really milking well. 302C’s 2022 calf was also a feature and sold to Kimberlee as well. 133L is probably the best of the 3 which is saying alot since both sisters will rank in the top 20% of most herds. 133L is sired by our new Sandhills bull “Insight.” We are really excited about his heifer calves. HORNED Owned with Rob & Deanne Gough Another 499H daughter that’s going to be a great one. Rob and Deanne Gough bought her dam in last year’s sale and wow what a buy. Dam is a daughter of our great 767 Cooper bull and you can see why we went back in the semen tank to use him again. His females are just special and still with great EPDs for an older sire. As much as I love 20J, I think 50L is going to be better. Her EPDs are as impressive as she is, with all 4 carcass traits in the top 50% with marbling top 14, Rib-eye top 19 and carcass weight top 21, teat and udder score top 15 with milk top 30, total maternal top 13. Growth numbers are just as good, weaning top 5 with yearling top 10 and birth stil a moderate 3.5.

Paternal sisters, both 767T daughters

32J, same sire as 20J. 2 year old Show Cow.

POLLED These next 2 Blockbuster heifers are what I was hoping the Blockbuster females would be like. Big, deep and powerful. They are alot like our Eclipse females, only more performance and even a little stouter. 60l’s dam is one of our great cows out of our top 315Y cow family. 72F has pumped out 4 great females in a row. The first 93H is one of our top cows, her next 22U sold as a feature show heifer to Karsten Grabler. Her calf last year was out feature show heifer and sold for $11,000 at Red Deer to Stan Locke’s grandson Blake. I’m betting this one will make a great cow. Love her depth and power.

HORNED Owned with Curtis Rasmussen One of the top heifer calves since birth. Her dam is also a great. Last year’s calf 70K, a full brother, sold as a feature for $8500 to Simpson Ranches. Her heifer the year before was a show heifer. Her other daughter, 426H is a perfect uddered female in our herd and has a feature heifer Lot 48. 243D is an MVP cow with a .32 milk, and good growth. 40L has a top 25% REA and 40% for marbling. POLLED Another heifer I like alot. I think she’s going to make a great show heifer next year. She has all the right parts. Not been on feed yet, but still has the power and style we like. Her dam is another great heifer raised by Border Clan Cattle and purchased by Rob and Deanne Gough last year. They are a couple of our good friends that we own a few cows with on shares. I would love to be keeping this one, but we’ve committed to selling good prospect heifers. She’s a March so a different class than most of ours. The dam is a tight uddered cow with great milk quality. She had a tough summer last year and has been alittle thinner, but it sure hasn’t hurt her in the production end of things. 111L’s sire MJT 613H is really doing well. We love his calves. Our feature heifer sells at the Genes of the Future sale in Red Deer. Great set of EPDs especially in the carcass department.

Lot 46 POLLED An Insight daughter that I have a lot of time for. We’re selling choice of these 2 half sisters. Not sure which is the best. Both will show now in the young division, but especially next year after they get on feed. 109L is great haired with style and class and lots of body depth. Dark in color with great pigment. Her dam is a great uddered 2 year old that is working really hard. I love them as a pair. Great temperament as well. Great cow family with her grandmother being a daughter of the great MJT donor cow, 228P, mother of our herd bulls Magnum 311W and Kilo 327W. Lots of maternal and power here. Great EPDs as well with marbling & REA both top 5%. It will be interesting to see how 109L’s Geo EPDs come back.

Dam was also bought in last year’s sale by Curtis Rasmussen and we’re running her on shares. She’s done a great job on her heifer, has a perfect udder and has kept good body condition. Once again a good cow family, with our top 315Y cow in the pedigree. Anxious to see what her Geo EPDs profile reads. HORNED Owned with Applelane Truly saved one of the very best to round off this group of outstanding heifer calves. 22L is going to be a show heifer. She’s just the kind. Still out on grass and weight is close to 800 lbs. Not bad for a 2 year old’s first time out of the gate. Really nice udder and pigmented as well. 154J was a feature in last year’s sale to Apple Lane. She was getting close to calving by the time we got a truck going east, so we calved her and she will go east after the sale. 22L has extra muscle and power which is definitely no surprise with Blockbuster as her sire. Can hardly think what she would be like if she was on feed. She is still on my short list for Agribition. Her granddam is 24C, one of our top Uptown cows. That will help with the power, milk and pigment.

POLLED BW 85 Adj WW 650 Adj YW 1306 A moderate, thick, Blockbuster bull. He should sire some great feeder cattle. The MVP cows cross really well with Blockbuster. Probably the best EPD bull of the lot, top 5% for both REA and Marbling.

Homo Polled. What a special opportunity to get in on what we feel is going to be one of the bulls to propel our breed to the next level especially in carcass. Now only 3 herd can use this great in Canada, Hirsches, Little Fort and Skyvirtue. This will be the only semen interest to sell for the 2024 breeding season. Due to his late arrival in Canada, we only have 4 calves, 3 heifer calves and 1 bull born in 2023 and Little Fort has a few as well. This is the only progeny born so with this semen interest, you will still be one of the few to have calves. Upstream is the only one in the US to report calves for 2023 and feels they are their best sires group. Well marked, with lots of pigment and style, loaded with thickness. But I think the most unique thing this guy brings to the table is how he can fix weakness of most cows in so many departments because he’s so exceptional in so many ways with good accuracy. He’s top 1% for weaning, top 1% udder score, top 1% marbling and top 1% carcass weight. Off the charts (better than 1%) for REA, PWG, FMI, SC, and yearling weight, top 3% for teat size. With all this, he’s still only a 2.5 birth EPD, ranking him in the top 40%. All our calves at this point are our of 2 year old heifers. He is highly recommended as a heifer bull as well.
