Dear Friends,

I want to extend an invitation to everyone to come to our ranch on October 14, 2024 for our annual production sale. What a year 2024 has been and we are glad to be getting things back in order at the ranch. Following the best moisture years in our memory in 2023 we were part of the Smokehouse Creek fire on February 27, 2024 losing 80% of our grass and miles of fence. We are so appreciative for all of the hay, feed and supplies that have been donated to us and all of our fellow ranchers in the region. It is awesome to see what a wonderful, Christian spirit still prevails in the South-Central United States!

Dad started managing Indian Mound Farm in New Harmony, Indiana in 1964 making this the 60th year of the Haygood family has strived to raise the best Hereford genetics in the world. Dad worked hard and brought Indian Mound to prominence while becoming a partner in the herd. In 1981 we brought all of the three-year-old and younger females to Mom’s family ranch in Canadian, Texas. We have never changed our goal to raise the best Hereford cattle you can find.

Let me tell you about our cowherd. I feel certain the tough rules and selection criteria we have implemented over the years have put us on a unique path in the registered cattle business. I don’t know of another registered cattle operation that has a zerotolerance set of tough rules that are followed 100% of the time. No cow is sacred here and that really makes raising cattle easy. It is hard culling cattle that are 95% successful, or have an awesome pedigree, or have any type of special connection to the operation or family. We won’t make excuses for any cow and I think that is what sets our program apart from other seedstock producers. We welcome visitors into our cowherd anytime to see the fruit of our labor and think it is in the best interest of anyone buying bulls to scrutinize an operation before adding their genetics to your herd.

Now let me tell you about the development of our bulls. The second thing that sets us apart from the majority of our bull selling competitors is the low input way that we develop bulls. In the seedstock business it has always been accepted that fat bulls sell better, but we disagree. The assumption made when selling fat bulls is that problems covered in fat are hard to detect, but to me the problems those fat bulls bring to the table are numerous including movement and soundness and in the first breeding season many fat bulls fall completely apart when they try to learn to survive on grass and limited feed. Our bulls are raised in the pasture and sold in a healthy and vigorous condition making them well suited to most ranching operations in our region. Our bulls continue to gain and grow in our customers pastures and they are sound and ready for hard work.

Call, text or e-mail and I will answer any questions or supply you with a sortable spreadsheet of the sale cattle.

Thanks again, Lee Haygood

The Haygood Family

The Indian Mound Ranch Bull Selection Categories

There is so much data to sort through when making your bull selections we have built five categories to make your job easier. Below you will see each category and the explanation of how bulls qualify. Some bulls excel in multiple categories, but you can make sure they check the boxes that you need in your herd.

IMR EASY CALVER: The bulls in this category should be easy calving for cows and light enough birthweight to use on heifers.

• CE EPD (Calving Ease Direct) must be a minimum of double the breed average.

• BW EPD (Birth Weight) must be below breed average.

• MCE EPD (Mature Cow Weight) must be above breed average.

IMR LOW INPUT SPECIALIST: The bulls in this category have lower growth from yearling to maturity and their daughters should be moderate sized cows. These bulls have a lower dry matter intake meaning their progeny should have a lower daily consumption of feed than the breed average. The milk level of the daughters should be lower than breed average so they will use less energy building milk while living in a dry climate or minimum input operation.

• CE EPD (Calving Ease Direct) must be above breed average.

• YW EPD (Yearling Weight) must be below breed average.

• DMI (Dry Matter Intake) must be below breed average.

• MM EPD (Maternal Milk) must be below breed average.

• MCW (Mature Cow Weight) must be below breed average.

IMR HIGH GROWTH: The bulls in this category should produce calves with larger weaning and yearling weights than the breed average.

• WW EPD (Weaning Weight) must be above breed average.

• YW EPD (Yearling Weight) must be above breed average.

IMR CARCASS MAKER: These bulls have a combination of traits that predict higher carcass value.

• CW EPD (Carcass Weight) must be above breed average.

• REA EPD (Ribeye Area) must be above breed average.

• MARB EPD (Marbling) must be above breed average.

• CHB$ (Certified Hereford Beef Index) must be above breed average.

IMR COWHERD BUILDER: This category should identify bulls that will produce daughters with higher fertility, more longevity, tighter udders, and smaller teat size.

• SCF EPD (Sustained Cow Fertility) must be above breed average.

• UDDR EPD (Udder Suspension) must be above breed average.

• TEAT EPD (Teat Size) must be above breed average.

Indian Mound Ranch is proud to be one of only twenty-three Hereford breeders from across the U.S. to achieve the Platinum Total Performance Records breeder status for the spring of 2024.

The Platinum TPR program was established in 2018 to recognize breeders who participate in the American Hereford Association’s Whole Herd Total Performance Records (TPR) program that was implemented in 2001 to create a more accurate database and increase the value of Hereford genetics. The Platinum TPR Breeder is the highest level of achievement when it comes to complete calf crop reporting. Breeders must meet the following Specific requirements to become a Platinum TPR breeder:

• Herd Inventory must be submitted prior to date inventory surcharge goes into effect

• Complete reporting of calving ease and reproductive status for each dam on inventory

• Complete reporting of birth weights for each live calf recorded in the calf crop

• Complete reporting of weaning weights for each live calf recorded in the calf crop

• Complete reporting of yearling weights for each live calf recorded in the calf crop

• Complete reporting of scrotal measurements for each bull calf in the calf crop with a recorded yearling weight

• This heifer may be the best-bred heifer on the ranch in many ways and I would never have dreamed of selling her, but she was bred on the second cycle, and I have set a hard rule that I only keep heifers bred AI or in the first 21 days. Big red eyes, short marked, deep bodied, easy fleshing and out of a fabulous cow line. Her dam, 0009H, is one of my favorite 710E daughters. 0009H is moderate framed, deep and wide with ample milk and honestly that describes all the cows in this maternal line. 0009H is very likely going to be in our embryo donor pen soon and we used her son, IMR 0022H Advance 2010K, as a service sire on heifers last year.

• Bred AI on 5/8/24 to CL 1 Domino 3249L, then pasture exposed to CL 1 Domino 3249L from 5/8/24 to 6/22/24. Likely pasture bred.

DELAYED BLINDNESS – DB:

Delayed Blindness (DB) is caused by retinal degeneration within the eye. Cattle affected by DB are not born blind but vision loss is noticeable near or just after one year of age. Initial clinical signs may include the animal having difficulty navigating their surroundings, bumping into stationary objects, and slowly navigating unfamiliar terrain. These cattle will also lack a menace responsive (reaction to something being moved toward the eye). Cattle are remarkable at adapting; if in a stable environment vison loss may be severe when first noticed. Unless secondarily injured, the eye appears normal to the casual observer. A detailed ophthalmologic evaluation of the retina in the back of the eye can confirm retinal degeneration. Diagnosis can also be established by genetic testing.

THE GENETIC DEFECT IS CONSIDERED AUTOSOMAL RECESSIVE, MEANING AN AFFECTED CALF MUST HAVE TWO CARRIER PARENTS. SO IF YOU END UP BUYING A CARRIER BULL AND BREEDING HIM TO AN ALTERNATE BREED COW YOU WILL NEVER HAVE A CASE OF DELAYED BLINDNESS.

DB Bull Carriers in the sale: 3007L, 3012L, 3128L

DB Bred Heifer Carriers in the sale: 3002L, 3013L, 3014L, 3017L

BRED HEIFERS

BIDDING

All cattle offered for sale will be sold to the highest bidder. The auctioneer will settle any disputes with regards to bids and his decision will be final.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Corrections or additions of any information in the sale catalog will be announced from the auction stand prior to the selling of the animal and such announcements will take precedence over any printed material.

GENETIC ABNORMALITIES

Animals that are carriers of known genetic abnormalities will be either so indicated in the sale catalog, announced from the auction block or both.

PAYMENT TERMS

All sales are for immediate cash settlement unless other credit arrangements have been established between buyer and seller prior to the sale.

BUYER’S RISK

The animal becomes the property and risk of the buyer as soon as sold but it shall be the responsibility of the seller to see that animals are properly cared for, free of charge to purchaser, until delivered to buyer or until the expiration of 24 hours after the sale, whichever comes first.

CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRATION

Seller shall transfer a breeding animal to buyer within 10 days of settlement. The seller guarantees that the animal is registered according to the rules of the American Hereford Association or the American Angus Association. If a female is sold bred and carrying the service of bulls requiring AI certificates, said AI certificates shall be provided by the seller unless otherwise stated.

EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES (EPDs)

Expected progeny differences are statistical predictions or estimates of expected performance of future progeny, not guarantees of performance.

HEALTH

All animals will be eligible for interstate shipment as required by federal regulation. Buyers should be aware of their own state’s specific health requirements.

BREEDING GUARANTEES

All animals are guaranteed to be breeders with the exception of (a) calves under 12 months of age at time of purchase; (b) any female that is placed in an embryo transplant program and subjected to super-ovulation; or (c) gross negligence on the part of the buyer. Sellers guarantee that bulls are breeders. All bulls have passed a breeding soundness exam performed by a competent veterinarian. Females sold as safe in calf have been examined by a competent veterinarian. Open females are guaranteed to be without calf. Any agreement with respect to Embryo Transfer production shall be a separate agreement between buyer and seller.

GENETIC ABNORMALITY POLICY

1. Seller will be responsible for informing buyers of all known information relative to genetic abnormalities.

2. Buyer will assume all risk associated with the purchase of known and unknown genetic abnormality carrier animals provided the seller has disclosed all known information relative to said genetic abnormalities.

3. Seller is not responsible for any new genetic abnormalities that are recognized by the American Hereford Association after the sale of an animal or genetic material.

EXERCISING OPTIONS FOR ADJUSTMENT

1. The purchaser must notify the seller of his dissatisfaction with an animal in writing within six months of the sale date.

2. In the event an animal is claimed to be a non-breeder, the purchaser may return the animal to the seller’s ranch if in good condition and is accompanied with a health certificate indicating that the animal is free from infectious and contagious disease. This is done at purchaser’s expense. The seller is then entitled to six months trial following return of the animal, at which time he will have the opportunity to determine the animal’s breeding ability. If at the end of six months the seller is unable to prove the animal a sound breeder, the seller shall have the option to replace the animal with another of similar quality or to refund the purchase price. If the seller determines the proven breeding ability of the animal it shall be the obligation of the purchaser to accept delivery of the animal. All transportation is to be at the purchaser’s expense.

3. If a female is sold under the conditions “safe in calf” and she proves to not be pregnant, the purchaser may receive service of the bull to which she was previously served, if available, or service to another bull of the purchaser’s choice owned by the seller, or an adjustment of 25 percent of the purchase price which should be considered satisfactory settlement and will relieve the seller from further liability, except in case such female proves to be a non-breeder. The expense of transportation shall be an obligation assumed by the purchaser.

4. If a female is sold as “served” or “pasture bred” and proves not to be safe in calf, the purchaser may return the female to the farm of the seller at the purchaser’s expense to be served to the bull previously used, if available, or to another bull made available by the seller and agreed upon by the purchaser.

5. If a female sold as “open” proves to be with calf, the purchaser may return the animal to the farm of the seller for a refund of full purchase price or for another animal of similar quality. In all cases it shall be the obligation of the purchaser to bear any expense resulting from transportation.

6. If an adjustment must be made on any part of a cow-calf pair, the adjustment can be partitioned by weighting the value of the cow by 75% of the purchase price and 25% of the value placed on the calf.

THE AFOREMENTIONED TERMS AND CONDITIONS SHALL CONSTITUTE A CONTRACT BETWEEN THE PURCHASER AND SELLER OF EACH ANIMAL SOLD UNDER THESE TERMS AND SHALL BE BINDING UPON BOTH. ANIMALS RESOLD FOLLOWING PURCHASE IN A SALE SHALL CONSTITUTE A SEPARATE TRANSACTION AND THE PRIVILEGES AND OBLIGATIONS OF THE ORIGINAL TWO PARTIES CONNECTED THERETO ARE NOT COVERED BY THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF THIS SALE.

• We feel so blessed to have two complete program changing herd sires, 8099F and 710E, in our program back-to-back. We are completely sold on 8099F and are using him on the entire cowherd including the 710E daughters. He has the look with his red color, pigment and freckles and loads of natural thickness and depth. This is truly a bull who sires light calves with explosive growth to weaning and slowing down by yearling and maturing into moderate sized cattle well that fit our region perfectly.

• He progeny average a 98.3 ratio at birth, a 101.6 ratio at weaning, a 98.3 ratio at yearling, a 100 ratio on REA and a 104.5 ratio on marbling. Don’t overlook the fact that 8099F has proven himself to be a consistent producer of high marbling.

• We chose 0117H to be the 710E son to carry on the torch. 0117H may be one of the best-looking herd bulls that we have ever raised and looks great every time you see him.

• His dam, K5 8050U Miss Advance 1014Y, has been the most productive cow on the ranch in the last decade and like 710E produces daughters with great udders. With the combination of these two great maternal lines the sky is the limit for his daughters. Check out the impressive spread on his calves’ ratios. His progeny average 98.6 at birth, 102 at weaning, 101.2 at yearling, 105.5 on REA and 92.3 on marbling.

• We can’t get enough 710E in our program and in a few years, he may be in all of our pedigrees. 710E is an absolute, proven, udder fixer. Many times, perfect udders mean low milk, but his daughters are awesome producers boasting a 101.9 weaning ratio on 200 calves.

710E not only sires great females but his sons have low to moderate birth weights along with plenty of length and growth. He truly breeds cattle that fit our part of the world.

• His progeny have posted an average birth weight ratio of 100.1, weaning weight ratio of 101, yearling weight ratio of 100.9, REA ratio of 99.9 and marbling ratio of 99.2.

• 2183 was the pasture sire on the horned, fall calving cows in this sale.

• 2183 was our pick of the 2023 Harrell Hereford Ranch sale in Baker, Oregon. His sire 9241 is proving to be a breed leading carcass bull in both REA and marbling. His dam is a daughter of Harrell’s 2185 bull, that we have successfully used by A.I. in the past and were anxious to add to the herd in greater numbers. • 0056 is the pasture sire for the polled bred heifers in this sale.

• Joe Dan Ledbetter bought this herd sire from our friend Bill King in Stanley, New Mexico. Although he is horned, he has a pedigree with strong polled breeding on both the top and bottom of his pedigree. Whenever you see 88X in the pedigree you are getting some of the most maternal, polled genetics in the breed. Joe Dan has already proven 0056 as a heifer bull as his
