Will a South American Hereford Bull Make It to America? Great breeders of registered cattle from around the world are very similar in many aspects. They tend to be independent thinkers; they take great pride in engineering the next generation; they are constantly looking for an edge in selection that will help them produce the next great one; and when successful, they enjoy the bragging rights that accompany both large and small victories. I’ve traveled the world, and no matter where I go, I can see these similarities found in what I call good stockmen. For many decades, these similarities have driven breeders to seek new frontiers in genetic selection and progressed traditional genetic evaluation into high tech spheres. These competitive tendencies have also driven breeders to look outside their country’s population to foreign genetics for the prospects of new genetic enhancements. In the past those decisions were sometimes risky due to the lack of ability in making genetic comparisons across countries. Today that risk is beginning to change. In 2009 four of the five largest Hereford populations joined together to

This year, $6,775 was generated from three lots. Lot 31A was purchased by Dimitri Matargas, Iron Lake Ranch, Dallas, Texas, for $4,800. Dale and Nancy will treat Dimitri and three guests to dinner at Houston’s Steakhouse in Kansas City, Mo., during the American Hereford Association (AHA) Annual Meeting. Additionally, Lot 31B, five straws of conventional semen from Golden Oak Outcross 18U, brought $275 a straw from Dave Bielema, Ada, Mich. Lot 31C, five straws of conventional semen from CL 1 Domino 144Y , was purchased by Nancy Bowling, Blackwell, Okla., for $120 a straw. HW

produce the first global genetic evaluation — the Pan‑American Cattle Evaluation (PACE). The American, Argentine, Canadian and Uruguayan Hereford organizations teamed up to share their performance data in one collective evaluation. The American and Canadian Associations joined forces in 1995, but this addition of two South American countries formed a new alliance that now allows, through genetic linkage, head to head comparison of Hereford EPDs across all four countries. These across-country comparisons open up new Hereford populations for use with reliability and confidence. Already, American and Canadian breeders have benefited in increased herd bull, embryo and semen sales to South America. According to National Association of Animal Breeders data, Hereford exported semen sales were up 36% in 2012 with more than 100,000 units sold. Much of that went to South America. There are other factors that have contributed to higher semen exports including relaxed health regulations concerning U.S. BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy) status along with currency stabilization and a strong agriculture economy for Uruguay. However, because South America can now more effectively compare the performance of their cattle directly to U.S. genetics, a new demand has been generated. Today, Uruguayan and Argentine genetics are banned from entering the U.S. due to foot and mouth disease (FMD) regulations. Both are
now certified free of FMD, yet health regulations still prevent the importation of semen and embryos without cost prohibitive quarantine requirements. As the U.S. Animal Plant and Health Inspection Service (APHIS) becomes more comfortable with the disease control standards of our South American partners, we may see the prospect of new Hereford lines from South America trialed in the U.S. We have begun talking with APHIS administrators to determine what it might take to relax these regulations for semen and embryos. I recently attended the Uruguay Hereford Society’s National Hereford Show where we held a PACE technical meeting. Hereford breeder Kyle Colyer, Bruneau, Idaho, judged the Prado National Show. Both Kyle and I took the opportunity to visit a couple of ranches in the country. Uruguayan pedigrees are heavily influenced by U.S. genetics, but there were some cow families that might someday prove interesting to test. We identified a couple bulls that might make excellent prospects to test in the National Reference Sire Program (NRSP). With AI use increasing and the real prospect of population diversity declining, it is encouraging to know that we have strong trade relations and science-based comparisons that might someday allow us to bring in outcross Hereford genetics. Conquering trade regulations remains our first challenge. Next, may be to add Australia and New Zealand to the picture. HW Hereford.org

Simplot First Year Results Released In spring 2011, the American Hereford Association (AHA) entered into a research project with Simplot Livestock Co., Grand View, Idaho. The goal of the project is to document the long-term value of Hereford genetics utilized in the commercial cow herd with an emphasis on calving ease (CE), moderate milk and moderate mature size with as much carcass trait emphasis as possible. For more about the Simplot project, see the cover story in the October 2012 Hereford World or visit Hereford.org/simplot. In the first year of the project, Hereford bulls were bred to heifers that were
predominately an Angus cross. This was a total artificial insemination (AI) program, so high-accuracy CE Hereford bulls were selected and used along with high-accuracy Angus sires for comparison. Even though the longterm goal of the project is to measure the maternal effect, Simplot has collected CE, birth weight, weaning weight, feedlot and carcass performance data. In addition, feed intake information was collected on a portion of the steer progeny. All of the data will be used in the National Cattle Evaluation (NCE), and DNA has been collected on all
of the steer progeny and is part of the collaborated research between the AHA and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) on feed efficiency. All of the progeny were DNA sire identified. Currently, the second set of calves is on the ground, and in the third year, the project has expanded beyond a heifer project into utilizing some of the cows at Simplot. Below are results of the first year’s test. This project has been funded by breeder support and the Hereford Research Foundation along with Simplot Livestock Co. HW

Association updates The American Hereford Association (AHA) Board of Directors has approved two rule changes and an increase in fees. Rule 17A: New embryo transfer policy — for embryo transfer (ET) calves there will no longer be an ET certificate required for registration. The new requirement for registering an ET calf will be the reporting of the recovery date of the embryo at the time of flush. As previously, ET calves are charged an additional $10 per head over and above the normal registry rate (same cost as an ET certificate). This change is effective Nov. 1, 2013. Steers need registration papers: Starting in 2014, all steers showing at the Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) must be registered by the AHA and out of a registered sire and dam. No steer certificates will be accepted, only registration papers. The AHA will still offer traditional steer certificates for those state and regional shows not requiring a registration paper on steers at this time.
New registration and enrollment fees: Starting Jan. 1, 2014, registration fees will increase 50 cents per head and Total Performance Records (TPR) cow herd enrollment fees will increase by 50 cents.

The Canadian Hereford Association (CHA) is pleased to announce the hiring of Stephen Scott as its new executive director/general manager. Scott was raised on a traditional dairy, beef, cash crop farm in southwestern Ontario. He received a bachelor’s degree in animal Stephen Scott biology and a master’s degree in dairy health management, both from the University of Guelph. His experience gained from working for Alta Genetics, where he assisted in the design and implementation of a new genomically enhanced young sire test program for Canada, will be a great asset for the CHA. For the last few years, he has been the market analyst for the Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency (ALMA), where he provided insight into global meat trade. While there, he also led projects on Canadian consumer meat preferences, the benefits of traceability, assessing regulatory burden and the sustainability of the Canadian beef industry. As CHA executive, Scott says he is excited to have the opportunity to support an industry that is undergoing the transformation to the genomic era — a tool that will prove invaluable to the future of the beef industry. CHB: The showstopper Certified Hereford Beef (CHB) LLC was the main event and showstopper at the 2013 Affiliated Fall Food Show at the Amarillo Civic Center, Amarillo, Texas. Customers congregated from Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Kansas, Arizona, Arkansas and New Mexico to sample a taste of CHB® ribeye. It was evident customers relished the taste of CHB with each sample they consumed while asking further details about the program. Russell Fontenot, Affiliated Foods director of meat operations, credits the success of the program to Affiliated’s loyal customers, who rave about the flavor profile of the product. “We know after the first time a customer tries the product, they will be back.” Fontenot says. Furthermore, he attributes the success of the program not only to their staff but also to the partnership with CHB LLC and National Beef Packing Co. LLC. Affiliated Foods has been a CHB LLC partner for more than seven years. During that time span, the company has utilized more than 21 million lb. of CHB. Affiliated Foods has been in operation since 1946 and has hosted two food shows a year since the 1950s.

More satisfied customers Vista Markets, El Paso, Texas, hosted its second CHB cookout on June 29. Vista Markets began offering CHB in 2011 and has steadily increased sales during the past two years. Mike Pina, owner of Vista Markets, was humbled with the increase in attendance at the cookout and sold more than 350 sandwiches. Pina recognizes the CHB program as a branding opportunity for his stores. He says, “Other locations that do not carry CHB have customers who tell the meat managers there is a difference in the quality of the product.”

Miller’s Markets help sponsor charity golf On June 18 CHB LLC participated in the Miller’s-Holsum charity golf outing in LaGrange, Ind., which was sponsored in part by CHB merchant Miller’s Markets. During the event, 36 teams teed off in support of two local families facing medical issues and needing financial support. CHB LLC sponsored a hole. And, all participants enjoyed a CHB ribeye steak sandwich, provided by Greater Omaha Packing Co. Inc. This event raised nearly $9,000 for the two families in need. Miller’s Markets operates nine supermarkets in northeastern Indiana and northwestern Ohio and has been a loyal CHB customer since 1998. Plan to Attend Sweet Family Tradition The trailers will be packed, the cattle will be loaded and the miles will be driven next July to get to “A Sweet Family Tradition” in Harrisburg, Pa. This will be the Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) of the decade and you do not want to miss it. Harrisburg is home to the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex that hosts the largest indoor agricultural show in the country. Between the greatest cattle show of the year and the amazing attractions to see, this will be the trip of a lifetime. The complex is one of the nicest facilities in the country and with our growing numbers one of the few places that can accommodate the Hereford breed. With record numbers in 2013, we expect our show to maintain the No. 1 spot on top. Sitting under 24 acres of barns, the complex is large enough to host

5,000 large animals at one time. For the first time in many years, we will be stalling every single animal in the same barn. The 2014 JNHE will be a pleasant mix of cattle and culture. Harrisburg, being the state capital for Pennsylvania, will allow for many opportunities to travel and see some very cool attractions. Harrisburg is located just 12 miles from Hershey, where we all know the best candy is made. At the moment the planning committee is trying to arrange tours of the factory while we are there. Gettysburg is within an hour of the complex. This JNHE is your chance to visit one of the most historic and educational places in America. With 50% of the U.S. population living in the eastern time zone, we have a large new area to see and meet. This trip will allow families to see some of the things they have always wanted to experience out east and other families the chance to attend possibly their first JNHE. We highly recommend you take your time on the drive out and find
some historical sites or farms to stop and visit on the way. The East will be the greatest host to everyone on the way. Many people I have talked to are already inviting me to layover or just stop by on my way out. With fall shows starting, we encourage everyone to talk to others from your state or area and try traveling together. I know many states are already discussing taking a semi to Harrisburg to help cut costs. At the moment, the host states are working to help locate farms and ranches where you can lay over as you make your way out east. The committee is working hard to find accommodations for everyone. I cannot wait to see you in Harrisburg July 5-12 for the greatest show of the year. NHW Honors Retiring Directors, Welcomes New Leaders The welcome and warmth of fall brings the National Hereford Women (NHW) board to one of its favorite times of the year — the annual membership and board of directors’ meetings, held during the American Royal in Kansas City, Mo., Nov. 1-3. In this column, NHW honors retiring directors, heralds new board members, offers a recap of the year’s programs and successes, and launches a new queen program sponsorship effort.
Celebrating history “Considering our initial two-year planning process of merging the National Organization of Poll-ettes and American Hereford Women, we are entering into our fifth year as National Hereford Women,” Denise Billman, NHW president, says. “We are confident we have set a solid foundation, set standards high, and planned attainable goals. The 2014 NHW board, and henceforth, have all the tools they need to continue the education, enrichment and stimulation for our Hereford youth.” Part of NHW’s treasured beginning is the group of women who stepped up to make

the merger happen. The last of the organization’s founding directors retired during the fall annual meeting. Those who were recognized included Denise Billman, Newcomerstown, Ohio; Paula Acheson, Woodbine, Kan.; Shellie Collins, Chattanooga, Okla.; Jill Bielema, Ada, Mich.; Beth Burns, Pikeville, Tenn.; and Gay Maddox, Zionsville, Ind. “The NHW board has grown leaps and bounds and we have these ladies and the others who went before them to thank. The organization will continue to only get better by empowering Hereford youth and women in the beef industry with knowledge, opportunity and drive,” Billman says.
Annual meeting Prior to the annual meeting on Saturday, Nov. 2, three new director nominees were selected, based on nominations from the membership. The nominees presented for election were Becky Long Chaney from Nebraska, Northwest quadrant; Maddie Moore, Oregon, Northwest quadrant; and Suzanne Boyd, Kentucky, Southeast quadrant. “The three new directors will make for a very well rounded and equally distributed representation of the entire country on our board,” Billman says. NHW’s Junior National Hereford Expo activities in Kansas City were also reviewed including the scholarship applications received and the outstanding juniors who received the awards. The creative arts contest continues to be a hit with the younger juniors, and the queen’s tea made for wonderful memories. “We’re thrilled to sponsor the queen and princess event, where the younger members get a glimpse of what it’s like to be the queen and her ladies-in-waiting,” Billman says. “We’re definitely keeping this activity as an NHW tradition.”
Queen sponsorship program The prestigious National Hereford Queen program is a centerpiece of commitment and pride for NHW. Being selected queen is an intense and rigorous process but worth the time and effort made to represent the breed throughout the country. “As with any organization, we are always looking for new opportunities and programs,” Billman says. “Our National Hereford Queen is sponsored by NHW, but we do need support for her because it is a very expensive venture for these young ladies. In an effort to continue the growth of the queen program, we unveiled a new sponsorship program during the American Royal that we are confident will not only meet our needs but provide a wider opportunity for more breeders, businesses and organizations to be part of the queen program. “There will be opportunities on various monetary levels. We realize that today planning, strategies and budgeting are essential, so we are also offering a variety of commitment levels. It may be a onetime donation, a set donation each year, or sponsorship of a particular outing where the National Hereford Queen represents the breed and the beef industry. We anticipate this sponsorship program will flourish and will allow for the continuation of this prestigious program.”
President’s farewell “I’ve been truly blessed the last four years to have worked with incredible women from across our great country that share my enthusiasm not only for Hereford cattle but for the youth and what NHW stands for,” Billman says. “I’ve made friends from ages 4 to 78, and I cherish all of them. W
hen you attend your first Hereford show and sale when you are 3 weeks old, you are destined to do great things in the Hereford breed. It’s in your blood. There’s no doubt that Cliff Copeland, Nara Visa, N.M., has spent his lifetime serving the Hereford breed: first in the junior ranks and most recently retiring on Nov. 2 from his year of service as president of the American Hereford Association (AHA). He is the first to serve as president of both the junior and adult organizations. “I was extremely humbled to serve as AHA president,” Cliff says. “I hope the membership thinks I have been open, receptive and responsive to all questions and complaints and that I’ve taken a balanced approach to shows, performance and promotion.” Cliff co-manages Copeland and Sons LLC with his wife, Pat; his parents, Clifford and Barbara; and Cliff and Pat’s son and daughter-in-law, Matt and Kyla.
Copeland and Sons was established in 1943 with cattle as its sole business. Herefords have been the foundation of the Copeland program since inception, with the first registered Herefords being purchased in 1947. For more history about the ranch, see, “About the ranch” on Page 25. Today the Copeland 500‑head herd includes 90 registered Hereford females, 80 cows used to produce club calves and 330 commercial Hereford cows. “The commercial cows are a test herd for our registered herd,” Cliff explains. “We have not bought any bulls to use in the commercial herd since 1947. We test our own genetics to make sure they will work for our customers.”
Growing up During his youth, Cliff was an active member of the American Junior Hereford Association (AJHA), serving on its board and as president in 1976. “Participating in junior Hereford
activities to me was worth more than a college education,” Cliff explains. He recalls the opportunity to meet Hereford breeders from across the country as well as to travel to different ranches and learn about their programs. Cliff graduated from New Mexico State University with a bachelor’s degree in animal science. His first job after college was serving as herdsman at 26 Bar Ranch in Arizona, owned by John Wayne and Louis Johnson. He was then hired as manager of the Doolittle Hereford Ranch, Watrous, N.M. In 1978 he married Pat, and in 1983, when their son, Matt, was born, the couple moved back to the Copeland ranch and joined the family operation. “Everything we have and the success of the ranch today is because of the tenacity Mom and Dad had continued on page 24...

This test allows the Copelands to see which bulls will perform but will keep them in good shape to sell as yearlings. “We won’t sell a bull that we wouldn’t use on our own cows,” Cliff adds. He says their customers prefer to buy yearlings instead of 2-year-olds. “If they don’t utilize them too heavy as a yearling, they believe a bull will last a year longer than if they wait to use him as a 2-year-old,” Cliff explains. When a new bull customer visits the ranch, Cliff says the first thing they try to do is take the producer to see the commercial cows and calves. “If you like these cows and calves, you’ll like our program,” he tells them. Copeland replacement heifers are bred to Angus bulls to produce baldie calves.

The ranch Located in northeastern New Mexico, with an elevation of about 4,500 feet, the ranch is part of “short grass” country. According to Cliff, their environment can be severe with an annual rainfall of 15 inches, in the good years, and temperatures ranging from 110 degrees in the summer to minus 15 degrees in the winter with chill factors down to minus 40 or more at times. “The old timers say we are always only 30 minutes away from a drought,” Cliff says. “But cattle can do as good here as any other place on the planet if conditions are right.”
The Copeland program With the motto “This is a ‘no nonsense, real world’ cattle operation,” the Copelands strive to produce cattle that will work for their commercial customers. Copelands utilize every tool available to help them to select and produce better cattle including performance records, expected

progeny differences (EPDs) and feedlot testing. “Convenience traits like udders and feet are extremely important,” Cliff says. “Good feet are a must because of the distance these cows are required to travel. Our cows have to be problem free, they must go out and do their job.” The registered herd is managed under the same conditions as the commercial cows. The Copelands’ program includes grazing year round with only range cube supplementation. Most years they do not feed hay. This practice proves the registered cows can thrive in the New Mexico environment as well as in the commercial industry. All cows must produce a calf every year in a 60-day breeding season, or they are culled. “They are expected to go out, have a calf, raise it, fight off predators and bring it in the fall,” Cliff explains. “Fertility is our only maximum trait. All other traits must be in balance with the environment. “We get really cranky about good udders,” Cliff adds. “We don’t have time to get cows in to help their calves nurse.” They also keep an eye on milk production with the philosophy that too much milk can be a problem with breed back, tends to shorten udder life and adds to cow maintenance costs. After weaning, bull calves are developed on grass traps. “We don’t push for a big gain,” Cliff says. “We don’t want the bulls to gain more than 3 lb./day.”
Marketing program The Copelands have developed multiple marketing outlets which target different customers. For two years, the Copelands have partnered with Langford Herefords, Okmulgee, Okla., to host a joint production sale in October featuring registered females and bulls targeting the junior and seedstock markets. Also in October, they host an online heifer sale and an online steer sale marketing show prospects. In April bulls are sold off the ranch similar to the Ferry Carpenter concept. During an open house, customers can visit the Copeland ranch and view available bulls. All buyers are given a performance and base price sheet on arrival. When the sale starts everyone interested is asked to draw a number out of a can. The person who draws No. 1 gets to select any bull they want at the base price. However, if another person or persons want to bid on that bull, then an auction starting from the base bid is commenced. If no one else other than buyer No. 1 wants the bull then they purchase that bull at the base price. After buyer one then buyer two selects a bull and the whole process starts over until everyone who has drawn a number has had their chance to buy a bull. Then all numbers are put back in the can and the bidding process starts over again with whomever drew No. 1 having the chance to buy a bull and so forth until all bulls are gone. Hereford.org
“Most of our buyers are busy folks and it is calving season and normally the buyers show up about 9 a.m. for coffee and donuts and the sale is over and everyone is headed home by 11 a.m.,” Cliff explains. “This method allows everyone to bid on all bulls and just not be a first-come, first-serve basis like most private treaty sales. Sale expense is a bare minimum and the buyers really feel comfortable bidding in this low key atmosphere.” Some herd bull prospects for registered programs are sold while still on the cow and or up to a year of age. The commercial steers are sold in the fall weaned and after a Vac 45 program. The heifers not retained for the ranch are sold almost always as
replacement heifers and not feeders. They are marketed in the fall or the spring depending on the market demand and feed availability.
The showring Showing has been an asset to their marketing program and has increased herd awareness. The Copeland family has showed for many years at the state and local levels. And, in the past 10 years, they’ve hit the national scene, exhibiting at the National Western Stock Show, American Royal, Fort Worth Stock Show, Arizona National and North American International Livestock Exposition.
Industry leader Serving the Hereford and beef industry has always been a priority for the Copeland family. Through the years, Cliff has been a member, director and president of the New Mexico Hereford Association. Cliff and Pat were New Mexico Junior Hereford Association advisors for 17 years and in July were named National Junior Hereford Association advisors. Cliff has also been active in the New Mexico Cattle Growers’ Association, New Mexico Beef Council and New Mexico Beef Cattle Performance Association, serving in leadership positions in all three organizations.

About the ranch Originating in 1943 as Jack Copeland and Sons Herefords, the ranch was started by Clifford’s parents, Jack and Mary Alice Copeland, and his grandparents, Otis and Belinda Copeland. What began as a commercial Hereford operation was then diversified into a combination registered and commercial Hereford operation. Although, from the beginning, ranch cattle were exhibited at shows locally and nationally, the cattle have always been bred to survive under range conditions and to produce all of the performance the severe Southwestern climate will allow. Clifford and his wife, Barbara, took over the management of the ranch in 1959. In 1983 Cliff and his wife, Pat, moved home and joined the family operation. Finally, Matt and his wife, Kyla, make the fifth generation to continue the quest of producing the best cattle possible for Copeland customers. Today the ranch is even more diversified, selling not only registered and commercial Herefords but also F1 baldie replacement heifers. In recent years, a club calf division has also been added. HW

In 2009 Cliff was elected to the AHA Board. During his tenure on the Board, he served as chairman of the show and sale and marketing committees and was a member of the executive, breed improvement and member service committees. He says serving on the various committees has helped him understand the importance of the different AHA programs and how important it is to have a balanced approach as Board members. “No one thing is more important than the other,” Cliff says. “They are all equally important to our membership.”
Committed to helping the breed, Cliff has also helped with Certified Hereford Beef (CHB®) promotions in his area. “Cliff’s leadership style is one of personal example,” says fellow Board member Marty Lueck, Mountain Grove, Mo. “He never has brought ego to the table and is a good listener. I appreciate his logic and forward thinking, and he is a great advocate to the Hereford breed and its membership. “It certainly has been a privilege to serve with Cliff the past four years and an honor to call him my friend.”
Former AHA director and Texas Hereford breeder Paul “Butch” Funk agrees with Marty, adding, “Cliff Copeland is one of the finest leaders I know in our business or anywhere else. He can speak with anyone easily, and he is very approachable which makes all of us in our Association feel ‘part of the team.’ “Cliff also possesses the intellect and drive necessary in the best leaders, and he is, very important in my view, totally selfless. Finally, Cliff possesses two other characteristics not always found in our leaders in that he is truly humble and has a great sense of
In 2010 the AHA Board approved a new strategic plan. Reviewing that plan, what are your thoughts on the strategy?
I was fortunate to be a member of the strategic planning committee that helped develop the recent plan. It is soon going to be time to revisit the plan, but I think we are pretty well on target. Our current Board is in-tune with the plan, and I have confidence it will continue to move in that direction. Six key strategies I hope the Board and staff continue to focus on:

First and foremost, it is an honor of a lifetime to be elevated to this position. If someone had asked me as a young man if this would happen, I would have said he was nuts. I am extremely humbled to serve as president, and I have tried my best to be deserving of the honor.
What do you consider to be the five highlights of fiscal year 2013?
1) Improved customer service and turnaround time. 2) Certified Hereford Beef (CHB) LLC maintaining its level of sales in a tough consumer economy. The program was able to maintain the 17% increase we had during fiscal year 2012 in a flat consumer market.
3) Updated correlations for genomic-enhanced expected progeny differences (GE-EPDs) and blending genomic data up and down the entire pedigree. Also Hereford breeders’ commitment to getting more bulls tested to improve the accuracy. 4) Record setting sale prices. 5) A junior program that is on fire with enthusiasm and participation.

1) Continue to improve overall quality, consistency and profitability of Hereford genetics. 2) Continue to grow and improve the CHB program. 3) Continue to invest in member education and to improve customer service. 4) Continue to increase advertising and marketing efforts to ensure our place as a leader in beef production. 5) Cultivate and continue to grow our junior organization — the future of our breed lies in our juniors’ hands. I’d like to see more focus on leadership training and skills. 6) Continue our investment in all aspects of breed improvement, regardless of area — DNA testing, feed intake enhanced producers or whatever new comes along; this investment is paramount to our success as a breed.
How would you summarize your tenure on the Board?
What a ride! My tenure on the Board has been filled with very exciting times. Our breed has seen unrivaled increase in interest and demand, both for bulls and females as well as commercial replacement heifers. Hereford.org

Looking forward Saturday morning cartoons can teach you a lot about life. Well, some of them. A little secret about Cliff: his favorite cartoon character is Wile E. Coyote. As you might recall, the coyote, episode after episode, strives to catch the Road Runner. “He is the most optimistic character, or he would have given up a long time ago,” Cliff explains. Just like the coyote, through the years, Hereford breeders have had
tenacity and optimism to continue and to take the steps needed to continue to improve the breed. “We are witnessing perhaps the greatest time to be a Hereford breeder ever,” Cliff says. “Enthusiasm is at an all-time high, and we are seeing recordsetting bull and female sales. “Our Herefords are better than they have ever been thanks to the tremendous effort of our members to make them the best that they can be. I take my hat off to our members for staying the course and for raising and improving the breed during a time when it would have been easy to give

We have had enough DNA testing in the past year to now offer GE-EPDs to use as another selection tool. CHB is in very sound shape financially and more exciting staff has been added to help enhance CHB LLC in the years to come. Members now have two farm management software programs at their disposal that can also submit all TPR data as well.
What do we need to work on as a breed?
Breeders are doing a good job of eliminating the traits that have been a problem in the past. But we must stay diligent in this endeavor. I think we need to maintain some diversity in our gene pool and keep as many good lines of cattle that live up to our standards as possible. There is a good lesson to be learned from another breed about letting your breed gene pool get too thin. We don’t have to all try to ride the same horse. This is particularly true on such things as cow size and milk. We should be producing what fits our environment, or more importantly our customers’ environment, with as few expensive inputs as possible. Corn going from $3 to $7, or even if it is at $4.50, is a game changer on how the beef industry will get cattle from gate to plate. We, as Hereford breeders, need to be part of the solution and produce bulls that will sire offspring that are as efficient as we know how to make them for all segments of the beef industry.
Considering the challenges facing the Board and the beef industry in general, what do you think Hereford leaders and Hereford members need to address?
Market share, market share, market share. This is true no matter if you are selling bulls, females, show animals or CHB product. We are seeing demand for our breed right now like we have not seen it in decades. The challenge is “What do we do

up and go be producers of other kinds of cattle. It is because of your tenacity that we are seeing and enjoying success that is well deserved. With ongoing research in genomics, feed efficiency, calving ease and carcass traits, the breed should be prepared to meet the challenges of the future.” Likewise, because of the Copeland family’s tenacity and commitment, the fifth generation of Copelands, and likely many generations to come, will carry on the tradition of raising profitable Hereford cattle. to maintain and further increase the demand and acceptance of our breed?” I think, from the commercial bull market aspect, we only have one shot at these customers. If we don’t supply what they need or want, they will move on to another breed. We are producing the best Herefords ever, and I think the range bull buyers will see that in their calves sired by Hereford bulls. We must resist selling those animals that are not up to our standards just because they are worth quite a bit. We must continue to use every tool in the box — from performance records to EPDs, From DNA to scans and feed efficiency evaluations. Visual appraisal for structure, convenience traits and temperament are essential. AHA must advertise as much as it can afford. It is very hard when our closest competitor has the resources to outspend us two or three times, maybe more. Our staff has done a tremendous job of getting us tremendous bang for our buck and has developed some truly awesome advertising campaigns with a limited budget. Members need to be aware that they, too, have to promote our breed to the commercial sector. Consumer acceptance of our product as it relates to animal welfare issues will continue to ramp up. We have a great story about our breed and its breeders and we are just going to have to tell it. Having all breeders certified in BQA (beef quality assurance) techniques would be great for that story as well.
What are some of your favorite memories from your time on the Board?
The greatest opportunity I’ve had as a Board member has been getting to know so many great Hereford breeders from all over the country. Some other highlights include attending the AHA Media Summit at Olsen Ranch in Nebraska and the World Hereford Conference in Calgary, being a part of the development of our five-year strategic plan, and getting to work with some awesome fellow Board members and staff. Hereford Demand Continues to Increase During fiscal year 2013, increasing demand continued to be the theme in the Hereford business. Despite drought and escalating costs in the beef industry, Hereford breed demand continues to grow, as production sale averages increased $500 during fiscal year 2013 and reports of privatetreaty sales continue to out-pace the previous year’s reports. A total of 171 Hereford production sales were reported by American Hereford Association (AHA) field representatives this fiscal year, which ended Aug. 31. Bull sales averaged $4,763, up nearly $92, and females, $4,202, up almost $873 per head. “Hereford demand continues to climb as referenced by record sale prices for bulls and females during fiscal year 2013,” says Craig Huffhines, AHA executive vice president. “AHA experienced a near 5% increase in membership, further evidence of the popularity in the Hereford breed.” Hereford semen demand in the commercial industry is also increasing. According to the National Association of Animal Breeders (NAAB), domestic Hereford semen sales increased 2% compared to last year, and export sales increased 31%. Since 2006 Hereford domestic semen sales have increased 90%, a testament to the increasing demand for Hereford genetics in the commercial industry.
Hereford enthusiasm filled the Stadium Arena on the Hill Friday, Jan. 18 during the Mile High Night Sale in Denver. The sale was one for the record books with an interest in two bulls both selling for more than $100,000 and 28.42 lots averaging $19,805.

Progress in Performance The increasing demand for Hereford genetics is related to the success of and the commitment by Hereford breeders to AHA’s Whole Herd Total Performance Records (TPR™) program. Now 12 years old, the program has helped the AHA and Hereford breeders build a database that documents the breed’s strengths. More and more Hereford breeders continue to go above status quo and submit ultrasound data, body condition scores, udder scores and cow weights, which all add to the integrity and accuracy of the AHA database.
Performance and breed improvement highlights for FY ’13 • The new udder quality expected progeny difference (EPD) was released. • Updated genomic-enhanced EPD (GE-EPD) correlations were released in April that more than doubled the predictive power for some traits.
• With the fall 2013 EPDs, genomic information is now blended up and down the pedigree. • AHA continued collecting feed efficiency data and participating in the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)-funded study.
• AHA continued its multi-year project with Simplot Livestock Co. — documenting the benefits of using Hereford sires in a large-scale, predominately Angus heifer program.

Certified Hereford Beef (CHB) LLC experienced another year of growth during fiscal year 2013 despite the challenging U.S. economy. The company posted a record year in volume with 48.8 million lb. sold — a 4% increase compared to the previous year. Despite tight cattle supplies, record high beef prices and somewhat stagnant beef promotion, due to the wide price spreads between beef and competing proteins, CHB LLC is expanding its program. Both harvested cattle numbers and carcasses certified that meet the specification were up by 5% during fiscal year 2013. Much of the growth came from expansion of new retail store openings for existing customers along with a rejuvenated case-ready ground beef program. CHB LLC’s largest customer — The Fresh Market (TFM) based in North Carolina — has added eight new locations since the first of the year, bringing total TFM store numbers to 137 in 26 states. During fiscal year 2013, total CHB® volume for TFM increased 12.6%, generating more than 8 million lb. of beef sold. Longtime CHB LLC customer Coborn’s Inc., based in Minneapolis/St. Paul, added four new locations, which increased CHB tonnage by 21% for the company. In west Texas, independently owned Vista Markets, Market Square and San Eli Markets contributed to 17% additional growth for Affiliated Foods, based in Amarillo. Cattle numbers required to supply the CHB program continue to create demand for Hereford and Hereford-English baldie cattle. More than 382,000 cattle were identified through CHB-licensed packing facilities during FY 2013 as eligible from a live specification standpoint, while more than 259,000 carcasses were certified for the program — a certification rate of 68% for FY 2013. Since the program’s inception, 4.3 million cattle have been identified through licensed packing plants as meeting the live animal specifications, and 2.6 million carcasses have been certified to carry the CHB name.

Empowering the Next Generation Through the National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA), with the support of the Hereford Youth Foundation of America (HYFA), Hereford youth are developing into the next generation of Hereford breeders. The 2013 Junior National Hereford Expo was an action-packed week of contests and activities hosted in Kansas City, Mo., July 14-21. More than 650 NJHA members from 40 states participated in this year’s event, which included 1,213 entries and also provided opportunities for youth to participate in 23 contests outside the showring. Hereford youth also had the opportunity to attend the 2013 Program for Reaching Individuals Determined to Excel (PRIDE) Convention, hosted in South Dakota. These events, along with the distribution of more than $60,000 in scholarships to Hereford youth, would not be possible without HYFA.
With the sale of the Foundation Female and three embryo packages, $61,000 was raised to benefit HYFA Friday, Jan. 18, in a packed stadium during the record-breaking Mile High Night Hereford Sale in Denver during the National Western Stock Show. Starting the sale was the Lot 1 Foundation Female, donated by Tennessee River Music Inc., Ft. Payne, Ala. TRM 6104 Lulu 2044 ET was purchased by the Dave McMahon family of Belle Point Ranch, Ft. Smith, Ark., for $30,000. Lots 38A and 38B generated another $28,000 for two embryo packages and guaranteed pregnancies donated by Bushy Park Farm, Mitchell, S.D., and Tucker Cattle Co., North Platte, Neb., and purchased by Sullivan Farms, Dunlap, Iowa. T-Bone Ranch, Antonito, Colo., donated another embryo package that sold for $2,400 to Tejkl Show Cattle, Stanton, Neb.

Nature of Operations The American Hereford Association (AHA) conducts research and experiments in the breeding of Hereford cattle, compiles and preserves pedigree records for owners and breeders, participates in and promotes the arrangement of fairs, exhibitions and cattle shows to encourage the breeding of Hereford cattle, and assists with the promotion of the end product produced from Hereford cattle. Members and subscribers of the Association are primarily owners and breeders of Hereford cattle. The members and subscribers are located worldwide; however, the largest concentration is within the United States. Hereford Publications Inc. (HPI) provides publication services to Hereford cattle ranches and publishes a monthly magazine. The Association is the sole member of Certified Hereford Beef ® LLC (CHB). CHB strives to increase demand for Hereford cattle by promoting Hereford beef as a premium beef product under the Certified Hereford Beef ® trademark. CHB was formed as a limited liability company on September 1, 2001. Prior to that date, CHB’s activities were performed and accounted for within the Association. American Beef Records Association (ABRA) provides computer consultation in herd planning and management, breeding services and marketing for commercial livestock. Basis of Consolidation The consolidated financial statements include AHA and its wholly owned subsidiaries, Hereford Publications Inc. (HPI), Certified Hereford Beef ® LLC (CHB) and American Beef Records Association (ABRA) collectively referred to as the Association. All material intercompany transactions have been eliminated in consolidation. Management Estimates Management uses estimates and assumptions in preparing financial statements in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States. Those estimates and assumptions affect the reported amounts of assets and liabilities, the disclosure of contingent assets and liabilities, and reported revenues and expenses. Actual results could vary from the estimates that were used. Advertising Costs The Association expenses advertising costs as they are incurred. Advertising expense was $396,021 and $361,093 for the years ended August 31, 2013 and 2012, respectively. Basis of Financial Statement Presentation The Association reports information regarding its financial position and activities according to three classes of net assets. • Unrestricted net assets are funds available for any purpose. • Temporarily restricted net assets represent contributions whose use by the Association is limited by donor-imposed stipulations that either expire by passage of time or can be fulfilled and removed by actions of the Association pursuant to those stipulations. When a stipulated restriction ends or purpose of restriction is accomplished, temporarily restricted net assets are reclassified to unrestricted net assets and reported in the Statement of Activities as net assets released from restrictions. • Permanently restricted net assets — At August 31, 2013 and 2012, the Association had no permanently restricted net assets. Cash and Cash Equivalents The Association considers all money market investments and highly liquid debt instruments purchased with a maturity of three months or less to be cash equivalents. Investments amounting to $37,970 and $91,580 were considered to be cash equivalents as of August 31, 2013 and 2012, respectively. Accounts Receivable Accounts receivable consist of amounts billed for magazine advertising, subscriptions and member services, but not received by year-end. Bad debts are provided on the allowance method based on management’s evaluation of outstanding accounts receivable at the end of each year. HPI’s policy states that accounts with outstanding balances beyond 60 days will accrue interest at 1.5% per month, balances beyond 90 days will no longer be provided with services and balances beyond 120 days will be turned over to a collection agency. The allowance for doubtful accounts was $5,930 and $5,979 as of August 31, 2013 and 2012, respectively. Inventories Inventories are valued at the lower of cost (first-in, first-out) or market. Investments The Association’s investment portfolio is subject to the investment policy set forth by the Board of Directors. Investments are comprised of debt and equity securities and are carried at fair value. The fair value of investments is based on quoted fair prices for those investments or similar investments as of August 31 , 2013 and 2012. Gains or losses on sales of investments are determined on a specific cost identification method. Unrealized gains and losses are determined based on year-end market values. Property and Equipment Property and equipment are recorded at cost. Depreciation is computed on the straight-line method over the estimated useful lives of the assets. The assets are depreciated and amortized over periods ranging from 3 to 30 years. Additions and improvements of $1,000 or more are capitalized, while maintenance and repairs which do not improve or extend the life of the asset are expensed in the year incurred.

Depreciation charged against income amounted to $177,807 and $157,162 for the years ended August 31, 2013 and 2012, respectively. Revenue Recognition The Association recognizes service fee revenue over the applicable accounting period to which the services relate. Unearned revenues related to Association services and publication subscriptions and advertising of HPI are reflected as deferred revenue on the Consolidated Statement of Financial Position. Functional Allocation of Expenses The costs of providing the various programs and activities have been summarized on a functional basis in the Consolidated Statement of Activities. Accordingly, certain costs have been allocated among the program services and supporting activities benefited. Income Taxes AHA, ABRA, and CHB are exempt from federal income taxes on their primary operations under paragraph 501(c)(5) of the Internal Revenue Code, and therefore have made no provision for federal or state income taxes in the accompanying financial statements. They are, however, subject to income taxes on any net income from unrelated business activities. AHA, ABRA, and CHB have been classified by the Internal Revenue Service as organizations that are not private. HPI is a taxable entity and is, therefore, subject to federal income taxes. It is HPI’s policy to provide for uncertain tax positions and the related interest and penalties based upon management’s assessment of whether a tax benefit is more likely than not to be sustained upon examination by tax authorities. At August 31, 2013 and 2012, HPI believes it has appropriately accounted for any unrecognized tax benefits. To the extent HPI prevails in matters for which a liability for unrecognized tax benefit is established or is required to pay amounts in excess of the liability, HPI’s effective tax rate in a given financial statement period may be affected. 2 — Concentration of Credit Risk
The Association maintains cash accounts at a bank located in the Kansas City metropolitan area. The balances in the bank periodically exceed the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) limits. The FDIC insured limits were $250,000 at August 31, 2013 and 2012. The Association’s uninsured cash balances totaled $149,260 and $0 at August 31, 2013 and 2012, respectively. 3 — Fair Value Measurements

Investments consist of government bonds and notes, corporate bonds and notes, and equity securities which are carried at fair value using quoted prices in active markets for identical assets (Level 1), in accordance with generally accepted accounting standards. Unrealized gains/(losses) in the amount of $(87,597) and $9,349 were recorded to adjust investments to fair value for the years ended August 31, 2013 and 2012, respectively. These investments are exposed to various risks such as interest rate, market and credit risks. Due to the level of risk associated with certain investment securities, it is at least reasonably possible that changes in the values of investment securities will occur in the near term.

The tax provision differs from the expense that would result from applying statutory rates to income before income taxes because of the valuation allowance applied against the deferred income tax assets. Deferred income taxes are provided for the temporary differences between the financial reporting basis and the tax basis of HPI’s assets and liabilities. Differences are primarily attributable to the net operating loss carryforwards, resulting in deferred tax assets. The Association files income tax returns in the U.S. Federal jurisdiction and various U.S. state jurisdictions. The Association is subject to U.S. federal or state income tax examinations by tax authorities generally for a period of three years after filing of the tax returns. 7 — Temporarily Restricted Net Assets
Temporarily restricted net assets are funds donated for the purpose of awarding $2,500 annually to the champion of the National Western Stock Show in Denver. The balance of temporarily restricted net assets was $2,585 and $5,008 as of August 31, 2013 and 2012, respectively. 8 — Collections
The Association has a collection of artwork, appraised at approximately $640,500, at August 31, 2013 and 2012, that is on public display at the Association’s headquarters. The most recent appraisal is as of August 2011. The Association has adopted a policy of not capitalizing the collection of artwork in its financial statements. Accordingly, no collection items are recognized as assets, whether they are purchased or received as a donation. Purchases of collection items reduce net assets in the period when purchased. No items were purchased for or removed from the collection during the years ended August 31, 2013 or 2012. The Association insures these collections with a policy that has a face value consistent with the appraised values. 9 — Subsquent Events
Management has evaluated subsequent events through October 2, 2013, the date which the financial statements were available for issue. There have been no events which require disclosure.
4 — Retirement Plan

The Association established a defined contribution employee retirement plan for all eligible employees. The plan provides for employer and employee contributions based upon a percentage of annual compensation. Employer contributions for the years ended August 31, 2013 and 2012 were $85,734 and $77,452, respectively.

An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. The procedures selected depend on the auditor’s judgment, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial statements, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the entity’s preparation and fair presentation of the financial statements in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the entity’s internal control. Accordingly, we express no such opinion. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of significant accounting estimates made by management, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial statements. We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion.
