Did You Know byThat ? The Searchers Ian Beale Originally formed as a skiffle group in Liverpool in 1959 by John McNally and Mike Pender, the band took their name from the classic 1956 John Wayne western The Searchers. They soon recruited Tony Jackson with his homemade bass and amplifier who became lead singer and later recruited Chris Crummey as drummer and backup singer, who later changed his last name to Curtis. In 1960 they took on another lead singer Johnny Sandon and for a while they were known as Johnny Sandon and the Searchers. Sandon left the band in 1961 the group settled into being a quartet “The Searchers” with Jackson becoming the main vocalist. Like many of the groups they played the Liverpool circuit including The Cavern and a spell in the Star Club in Germany made famous by The Beatles. The band took up residency at the Iron Door club in Liverpool in 1963 and it was there that they tape- recorded the sessions that led to Pye Records recording contract with Tony Hatch as producer. The hits followed “Sweets for my Sweet” and “Sugar and Spice” Tony Hatch played piano on some of the recordings, he wrote Sugar and Spice under the pseudonym Fred Nightingale; a secret he kept from the band at the time. After scoring a big hit with Needles and Pins and only allowed one lead vocal track on their second album Tony Jackson left the band and was replaced by Frank Allen from the Cliff Bennett and the Rebel Rousers band .The hits continued till in 1966 Chris Curtis who was then known for not showing up to some of the shows due to use of heavy substances quit the band. Curtis formed a new band called Roundabout with keyboard player Jon Lord and guitarist Ritchie Blackmore; although Curtis's involvement was short the group eventually email:lived honeypot@europa-network.com became Deep Purple. As musical styles evolved, the Searchers could not keep up and as a result the hits ran out. While they continued to record for Liberty Records they ended up on the “Chicken in a Basket “circuit in Britain but still very popular in Europe and Australia. In 1992 Mike Pender left the group and formed his own band “Mike Pender's Searchers” Both groups continue to tour the UK and Europe but they have both had many personal changes John McNally and Frank Allen are still part of the original Searchers and Pender still fronts his group but with various back up members. After he left the group Tony Jackson went on to form his own group Tony Jackson and the Vibration later changing it to the Tony Jackson Group He had 4 minor hits and went on to tour with The Hollies and Marianne Faithfull, disillusioned with the music business he quit. In the early 90,s he made several attempts to make a comeback but failed, after years of heavy drinking and heart problems he died in 2003 in a Nottingham Hospital. Chris Curtis quit the music business in 1969 and went back to working for the Inland Revenue he stayed with them for 19 years, he often could be seen singing folk songs in his local club and sometimes get up and do a few Karaoke songs, with a lot of the younger people in the crowd not realizing who he was, he died in 2005 aged 63 More Music Trivia for you next Month 42 - The Buzz Magazine
