The Number One Guide To Who’s Who & What’s What in association with

EDITORIAL WELCOME TO ALL Dear Reader, Welcome to the first issue of The Buzz, A New Year and New Beginnings. Last year we launched a magazine entitled info, a dedicated local information directory, created from our apartment in our spare time. Little did we know the impact that was to follow, it received a terrific response and basically overtook us, we simply could not give it the full time commitment it deserved. We hoped it would be successful, of course we did, but not that fast, so we had to re think exactly where we would go from there, at the expense of many people slandering our name and stating we had gone bust. We had not gone bust, we just simply did not have the time to commit to a publication that spiraled almost overnight. We decided that we would take time out for a few months and re evaluate our situation. The outcome was that we would most certainly continue producing a magazine, but due to time out more and more similar magazines to our original one have immerged. This left us with a dilemma, and we had to re think our plans, and after many hours of research we decided to offer a new magazine that is totally different to what is already on offer, one that would offer the information people want to know most about, a publication that tells it as it is, and the result is well THE BUZZ. We are very proud of this project and we are in a position to offer a full time commitment from our office in Montemar. It has taken longer than we thought but the outcome has been worth it and we hope that you the reader will enjoy it as much as we enjoy producing it for you. Regards, Mark & Maggi The Editors & All The Team

All Quality Tested By Quality Testers C/Siroco Benalmadena Costa 50 yards up from Hotel Siroco

We first visited The Cavern when it was named Celebrity Square in the summer of 2004. A large interior, clean and inviting, and we experienced a group called The Prospectors which were the billed act and were fantastic. We had a very enjoyable night and owner Mario hosted Karaoke until the early hours which was superb fun. Drink prices were reasonable, service excellent and atmosphere fantastic. Since then the venue has been refurbished and renamed to The Cavern, still run by Mario and his wife Cheryl a warm and welcoming couple and offer fantastic hospitality. As they have got to know us we sent in a couple of our testers unknown to them to check how the venue is today. From reports back to us, The Cavern still retains a fantastic atmosphere, if not more so. It is one of the best venues on the coast. Make sure you visit.

See back page ad for more details.

Our first visit to Harry’s Bar was back in March 2004 when we were greeted by owners Val and Kev who offered the warmest of welcomes. We have since re visited on almost a weekly basis as it has fast become one of our favourite bars in the whole area. During our many visits we have had numerous chances to try Val’s cooking and may we say it is truly superb from full English breakfasts to a belly bulging Sunday lunch. Everything is superb and if you ask nicely you can have cucumber sandwiches. It is a superb bar set in picturesque surroundings and is certainly well worth a visit. If you like good company, pleasant surroundings, good food and drink, sky TV a good chat then Harry’s Bar is the place for you. Children are welcome. If you do drop in be sure to ask Val about her Jockey Whips, this is a must especially her cheesy ones.

Fancy a real rip roaring night out? One that you‘ll be talking about for many months to come. Well I know just the place – Mahoney’s Country & Western Music Bar’, you shall not be disappointed. Situated in Ibensa Square, this bar offers an excellent array of live entertainment each night (except Mondays as they close for a well earned rest) with the best acts on the coast including the talented and popular duo The Prospectors (Saturdays) and of course the man himself Eddy Mahoney plus the lively Michelle. Get yourself down there and you will soon realize what I am raving about, though open until late get there early enough to experience the full show, even then the night does not seem long enough. For those of you who have not seen Eddy in full throttle you are in for a treat, his repertoire is varied and each time he sings “Suspicious Minds” I just have to get up and boogie, Eddy really does give you a wide range of music and his spectacular vocals are equally matched by his huge stage presence. To give Eddy some time out to get a breather there is Michelle who always proves to be real crowd pleaser never failing in getting everyone foot stomping and clapping to each of her numbers. To add to the enjoyment of the evening is Molly Mahoney who runs (to the very highest standard) a well stocked bar with cold Guinness on draught, all drinks are normal bar prices, if you are lucky you may catch Molly showing off her line dancing techniques whilst serving. The entertainment and the bar prices combined makes Mahoney’s a popular venue all year round. Visiting Mahoney’s made me aware that I knew very little about Country music and it was here that I was educated and converted, thank you Eddy & co.

Owners Pet and Dave have run the bar for nearly 17 years now and one of the longest established in the area. They offer a warm friendly inviting family run bar and an extensive knowledge of the area. They are probably one of the best people to talk to with regards what is what and what is where. They are warm and amusing and offer so much to all, and if you are daring you must try their home made Sangria, it certainly hits the right places. The Rockin Robin is a TV free zone and offers a variety of games, a pool table and bar snacks. They do not serve food, it is the perfect drinks bar to escape to, talk to people and generally chill out. On the evenings they play music from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s and if it is fun your after then drop by and say hello to Pet and Dave.

This felt like a Spanish bar, and English are made to feel very welcome, as in others we have visited. Looking for somewhere to go, with so much choice it is so easy to get confused, well be confused no longer as the team at the Buzz have tried and tested various places for you, much suffering has been had to create these special guides. Each issue we will add a new one, update one with even more places and dedicated to individual areas. So for the first of our guides we look at Arroyo de la Miel and Benalmadena Costa.

FOR STARTERS Apart from a couple of drinks in the apartment it’s always nice to grab a bite to eat before a night out. We start in Arroyo at Harry’s Bar where you can have some fabulous home made food, well its made in the bar kitchen but hey let’s not get too clever, anyway a wide selection of meals and snacks are on offer together with refreshing drinks. Then we move on across the road down to the Fountain Bar for a couple of drinks to wet your whistle. After that we turn left out the doors and left onto the main road up to the traffic lights at Spar supermarket. Walk straight across down through the Gamonal until you reach Avenida Bonanza, known as the Bonanza Strip. One of the first bars is Inchy’s Bar, pop in for a drink before moving down to Fat Daves for another drink. Now pace yourself as you have a couple more bars to go yet. Once leaving fat daves carry on down to the next set of bars and pop into Country Jacks, then across the way to Poppies Bar and maybe over to The Wheel.

HOW TO GET To find out how to get your establishment listed on our dedicated night out guides telephone 952 052 189 or mobile 626 312 624 or drop us a line via e mail or in writing. We are featuring all areas of the Costa Del Sol and every one will be listed in all issues of the Buzz as well as on the website.

Ok you should now be ready for some live entertainment, but first maybe one more drink at the Rockin Robin on Nuevo Plaza Bonanza over the road from poppies on the main square. Once you have had a drink there go back towards Poppies and underneath on the lower level you will find Mahoney’s Music Bar, pop in there for some great entertainment, and if you are a real late nighter then go back out onto the main road turn left and walk down past Spar supermarket and past some new apartments where you will see The Cavern late night venue where it keeps going until the sun rises or you fall off your chair.

16 NOTE> Alternative Night out planners will be added each issue...ENJOY

IN SEARCH OF FISH AND CHIPS

THE READERS REVIEW

By Mike Quemby Montemar Living on the Costa Del Sol for nearly 4 years now I have found a distinct lack of decent fish and chips like back in the UK, until NOW……I have tried several including Jan’s Chippy and the Frying Scotsman in Benalmadena and Arroyo, Jans well rubber chips came to mind and the Frying Scotsman is pretty good depending on the night as it isn’t to consistent I have found. Now I live in Montemar and have only just found the perfect chippy, all this time and it was staring me in the face. Fincas Fish Chip And Kebab Shop, it is fantastic, fish and chips with peas for just 4.95 euros and they do Pukka Pies and fantastic Kebabs, nearly as good as Fat Daves. From what I can gather the owner imports all his ingredients from The UK and it certainly is the most authentic fish and chips I have ever tasted, but hey don’t just take my word for It go try for yourself.

The Number One Guide To Who’s Who & What’s What in association with

Who Is From Thisthe London Man? Palladium to The Bonanza

Show Bar in Benalmadena, is it a vampire? No well not whilst performing on stage at At least, It is Jeff Lynne, what you mean who. He has been here 3 years and You have never heard of him, now come on you don’t know just what you’re missing. Jeff Lynne is a vocal entertainer of the highest regard, having perfomed at top venues including the London Palladium, Grosvenor hotel, on various TV shows, and in the group Camblewick Green. Jeff now performs solo in his terrific one man act.

The Long & Winding Road Jeff is a true professional entertainer with a dynamic stage presence and terrific repertoire. Opening his show with A Mess O Blues he took command straight away, the audience chatter soon died down as he belted out numbers such as The Long & Winding Road and the fabulous Roy Orbison number, In Dreams. Jeff covered everything from the Bee Gees up to modern day music, and the change in vocal style was truly amazing, his command of notes and key changes is we can only say a gift. Apart from his command of song, his stage presence is excellent, at times projected with humour. His rapport with the audience is wonderful, and going by the age group of the audience it was clearly evident Jeff reaches out to everyone no matter how young or old.

In Conclusion..

Finishing off with the Bee Gees number, You Should Be Dancing, Jeff thoroughly entertained us. We came away feeling we had seen a real act not a glorified karaoke singer, Jeff Is A Professional, THAT’S FACT! The only other thing we wonder is who does his hair?

Interview With Jeff Lynne By Mark Madoc

Jeff Lynne - The Gift

His vocal range is pretty unique, his stage presence, dynamic, his delivery and timing to perfection, but who is the man behind the voice?, where did this gift come from? Jeff has kindly took time out of his busy schedule to talk with us in an interview which we hope will give an insight Into the man himself as well as where the gift came from.

Questions;

1/ Jeff, firstly thank you for taking time out to be grilled, sorry talk with us, let’s start with when did you first realize you could sing? When I was about 10 years old . It developed from there, as I got older my friends would be out and about when I stayed at home and practiced. 2/ Do you have any influences? Stevie Wonder is my main one. 3/ When and where was your first amateur performance? It was a Welsh working mens club. 4/ When did you get your first professional break? I am still waiting to get it, (he laughs) 5/ What has been your most embarrassing moment? Apart from this interview, the time I was on stage and there was a leak in the roof, funny, what is that doing there?, I thought, being Welsh we know all about leeks see, but it was a different leak the kind that went into the equipment and shorted all the circuits and we had no power. 6/ In you career of 75 years, tell us about some of the different venues you have performed at? Too many to mention really but they include the London Palladium, The Grosvernor Hotel, Cruise ships, various working mens clubs and many other venues all over Europe. 7/ Apart from being the front man, I believe you have played bass and harmonized with several people, tell us about those. Yes back in the 1960’s I performed with various groups including Camblewick Green, as well as harmonizing with other vocalists I have also done some voice overs. 8/ You have had TV work, what was that? Back in the days of ATV I worked on the Benny Hill TV show amongst others. 9/ Since you began in 1923, what big changes have you seen in the music industry, and what do you think about today’s music? The equipment & technology is the main change as well as some wonderful artists including the Stereophonics. In my act I cover all decades including some of today’s music, my taste is varied and I enjoy all types. 10/ What has been the most rewarding thing about your career? The feedback I get from the audience and still being able to perform, I enjoy it so much. 11/ On the flip side, what has been the worst thing about life on the road? I suppose being away from family, friends and loved ones from time to time. 12/ If you could duet with anyone, who would it be? Without doubt, The Bee Gees. 13/ Having performed with other people in the past as part of a group, do you feel more or less confident as a solo performer? It’s very different, the main thing is as a solo artist, I get to choose what I sing, I enjoy doing what I want to do and that is to entertain people. 14/ How long do you plan performing on the coast? I’m not going anywhere at the moment, but who knows what’s around the corner. 15/ If you could be anyone else for the day, who would it be? Stevie Wonder & be able to keep all the earnings from that day. 16/ How would you describe yourself in 3 words? Well, Tommy Foolery (fellow musician) described me as “BEST SINGER ON THE COAST” 17/ How did that make you feel? It is a very flattering thing to hear of course, it’s nice to have such a compliment, I must be doing something right. 18/ What do you do to unwind? I like to relax at home and listen to music, exercise, swim in the sea and spend time with my friends. 19/ Now there is something I and I’m sure the readers would love to know about, tell us why in the mid 1960’s you had to be smuggled into Germany? Who you been talking to?, I bet it’s that Gerald from Poppies Bar, He and I were in the same band at the time, and well let’s just say I was underage. You have done your research. 20/ Finally, What is the Gift? The gift, great film, no seriously as you have commented already, it is the ability of voice control and being able to go up and down the range of scales. I discovered it by accident, it is just something that I have practiced, I never stop learning. THANKS JEFF, Now those that haven’t heard the gift that is Jeff Lynne, get down to the Bonanza Bar on Monday or Thursday nights & You Will see A TRUE PROFESSIONAL! 19
