BUSHWHACKER

THE FRENCH 75
THE PALOMA
THE HUMMINGBIRD
Created in 1975 on the island of St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, this cocktail has the distinction of being named after a dog called–you guessed it–Bushwhack. It includes vodka, Kahlua, Dark Crème de Cacao, Coco Lopez (cream of coconut), a splash of triple sec and milk. Get creative and add your favorite fruit.
Said to be a flu remedy, digestion and circulation aid, kidney and liver tonic and, yes, an aphrodisiac. All you have to do is take rum, red wine and honey and soak it in a bottle with herbs and tree bark. It’s a unique process, but it’s worth it.
Ever had a drink named after a piece of artillery? Enjoy a French 75 and that’s exactly what you’re doing. Originating in the late 1800s, the French 75 came to be considered one of the first modern pieces of artillery. Comprised of cognac, syrup, lemon juice and wine, this drink packs its own delicious wallop.
The Margarita gets all the love, but it’s the Paloma that’s considered Mexico’s signature cocktail. A mix of Squirt, tequila and lime juice, the Paloma holds its own. And the name translates to “dove” from Spanish – a symbol of peace, perfect for a relaxing sunset cocktail. (Pictured above)
Jamaica’s eclectic mix of mountains and sea, culture and cuisine is perfectly mirrored in their equally eclectic signature drink, The Hummingbird. It’s a singularly unique concoction, with coffee-flavored liqueur, rum cream liqueur, milk, strawberry flavored syrup and half of a banana. It’s like a smoothie, vacation style.

YEAR 1: PAPER
YEAR 5: WOOD
Celebrate your relationship milestones with a memorable experience. Trust us—they’ll be remembered far longer than a fancy watch or bottle of perfume.
…to Fill With Stories
…to Keep the Fire Burning
As tradition has it, giving a
In the past, wooden knick-
paper present to your partner after spending 365 days together is the romantic, and historically Victorian, way to go. It’s meant to remind you of the delicate, modest beginnings of your relationship and is a symbol of the blank pages you’ll soon fill. Instead of gifting a paper memento, we suggest picking up two journals and setting out on an epic road trip. Pull out the journal every anniversary to reminisce. For road-trip inspiration, consider the North Coast of California, or the Million Dollar Highway in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains.
knacks have served as the quinquennial gift of choice. The significance of wood is twofold. It serves as a solid foundation to build your relationship upon, and it also represents the fuel to keep the fire burning. So why not snap some photos among some of the largest, strongest sequoias in the world in the Redwood National Forest in northern California? Here, you’ll find solitude, clarity and a whole lot of jaw-dropping views—a humbling way to wrap up five years.
YEAR 10: TIN
YEAR 25: SILVER
YEAR 50: GOLD
…to Build a Roof
…to Mirror Love
…to Keep Chasing the Sun
Tin is meant to symbolize the care and maintenance required to keep a relationship strong, even during the stormiest of times. Tin also is used for constructing roofs, and while it may not be the most ideal material to use when it comes to building a home, a tinroofed cabin makes for a pretty romantic getaway. Nestled in the lush tropical rainforest of St. Croix, the Renaissance St. Croix Carambola Beach Resort & Spa’s personal studios with vaulted roofs should do the trick when it comes to celebrating your 10th anniversary.
The historic nature of gifting something silver to a significant other dates back to the Holy Roman Empire, when husbands crowned their wives with a silver wreath on their 25th anniversary. Instead of reverting to ancient times, we suggest taking a trip to the country that does silver best. Mexico is the perfect place to celebrate the big twofive, and it’s bursting with opportunities to find genuine, hand-crafted silver jewelry. Stay in the idyllic town of Sayulita, just outside of Puerto Vallarta. The area is surrounded by mines and offers unique, hand-crafted silver designs.
Often called the golden anniversary, it comes as no surprise that gold is the traditional token of appreciation for this pillar. Instead of giving gold jewelry, celebrate in a big way by visiting The Gold Coast— Queensland, Australia. Golden beaches and sunsets will provide all the symbolism you’ll need as you traipse through the many tropical national parks, dine in style at luxurious restaurants and toast your way through the sparkling and vibrant downtown.

PLANNING
W
Planning a Destination Wedding What you need to know to make the most of this special time and place. B Y H E AT H E R S T E I N B E R G E R
Insider Tips Look for deals between September and November in tropical locations. Hotels also won’t be quite as full, allowing you and your guests to enjoy your resort and the destination’s signature attractions without the crowds. Summer can be a great—and unique—time for a destination wedding. The kids are off school, making this an easy season for guests to travel. The weather can be hot and more humid, which you can take into consideration when selecting your makeup, ceremony site and dress. Consider holding your wedding ceremony on a weekday. Resorts may be able to offer better pricing and more available date options if you can be flexible and don’t require a Friday or Saturday celebration.
Our Advice If you’re planning a summer or early fall destination wedding, be aware: The Atlantic hurricane season, which affects the Caribbean islands and the Mexican Caribbean, runs from June 1 to Nov. 30. The Pacific hurricane season, which affects Baja California and Mexico’s Pacific coast, starts May 15 and also runs until Nov. 30. Plan on a backup venue in the event of inclement weather. Get travel insurance such as Weddings by Funjet’s All In One Travel Protection. Take advantage of resources like your on-site coordinator and your travel professionals. Their expertise will be invaluable throughout the decision-making process.
Contemporary Trends Destination weddings aren’t just on the beach anymore. The sky’s the limit, from gardens and gazebos to piers and rooftops. And, cocktail hours are about so much more than the drinks. Think of yours as an experience, with unique touches like high-end street food and even fire dancers. Embrace a sense of whimsy. Many couples are finding ways to incorporate unusual items such as birdcages, wine bottles, chandeliers, candles, frames and flowing fabrics into their wedding decor.

ACTIVE
In Pursuit of Wellness Living the 80/20 rule on vacation. B Y DAV I D P R I T C H A R D
the 80/20 rule is very simple: eat clean 80 percent of the time, and allow yourself those delicious indulgences 20 percent of the time. Unfortunately, when you’re on vacation that 20 percent can rocket to 50 percent or more, which can leave you feeling depleted. When you’re traveling, you absolutely should treat yourself a little more than you normally would. Don’t stress about it. Just follow these four simple tips, which will help keep you on track no matter where your adventures take you.
Drink plenty of water. Travel is hard on our bodies, and we forget about staying hydrated. Drink water as soon as you wake up, travel with a reusable water bottle, and keep filling up, whether you’re at the airport or at your resort.
Be prepared. Visit a local market or grocery store and stock up on healthy snacks. You’ll be less tempted to eat fast food, and you’ll avoid becoming “hangry.” This is critical when you’re on the go and are walking more than usual.
Maintain your routine. Think about your other routines, from skin care and vitamins to sleep and mental health practices. Try to maintain your foundation. Pack your vitamins and the other components of your normal regimen at home, and bring them with you.
Stay consistent. Find a workout routine that is easily adaptable for hotel rooms, beaches or small hotel gyms. Also, get off the treadmill and run on the beach, or go for a bike ride and see the sights.

Then, channel your inner Holly Golightly and visit the Tiffany & Co. flagship store, a Fifth Avenue gem since 1940. Finally, experience a contemporary twist on afternoon high tea at the luxurious Langham Place hotel, also on Fifth Avenue. El Dorado Maroma, A Gourmet Inclusive Resort Intimate, exotic, but above all, romantic— the dream vacation that never ends. BY SHELDON RUSCH
We’ve all been there, in one of those lucid, romantic dreams where the place is so perfect and the feeling so blissful we don’t ever want to leave. But the real world has a way of insisting on it. When we do wake up, we leave the dream with one overwhelming thought. I want to go back—and stay. In one very dreamy place, you can. You don’t even have to wait for your REM sleep cycle to kick in. The setting is the award-winning, adults-only El Dorado Maroma in Riviera Maya, where the line between the real world and the dream world blurs.
Photo courtesy of El Dorado Maroma
For a full immersion in the experience, remember this one word: Palafitos. It means “overwater dwelling,” and at the El Dorado Maroma by Karisma, it equates to 30 brilliantly designed and exquisitely appointed overwater bungalows. That body of water happens to be one of the most beautiful in the world, hugged by the white-sand shoreline of Maroma Beach, named one of the 10 best beaches in the world by The Travel Channel. With its mesmerizing glass floor and a private ladder descending into the water, your Palafito will provide unlimited access to azure surrealism and mind-soothing tranquility. You’ll also find plenty of appealing spaces for relaxation, from the expansive outdoor deck to the indoor Jacuzzi. And then there is the private outdoor shower called, appropriately, Agua del Amor. We’ll leave the translation to you. The Palafitos are the first and only overwater luxury bungalows in Mexico, this should come as no surprise. El Dorado Resorts provides unique romantic experiences for guests at award-winning luxury hotels in Mexico and the Caribbean. Karisma Vice President of Marketing Armando Chomat describes the Palafitos as “a one-of-a-kind experience for travelers seeking the ultimate luxury getaway,
whether it’s to celebrate a honeymoon, birthday, anniversary, or for no reason at all but to become immersed in nature and be pampered with the finest hospitality.” Clearly this is a place where love and luxury are perfectly coupled. Consider the world-class dining of the Gourmet Inclusive Over Water Ocean Grill & Wine Bar, featuring an open kitchen, mesmerizing views, a glass-bottom floor and menu options inspired by the sea and land with fresh vegetables and spices that are grown in the El Dorado Royale greenhouse. When it’s time to connect body and soul, the Overwater Náay Spa offers relaxing, invigorating, therapeutic treatments based on traditional Maya herbal practices. Of course, even couples who are madly in love with the water have to come up for air sometime. When they do, there’s another dreamscape only steps away—where Maroma Beach offers the shore version of a siren song, with lots more to love. The resort is intimately scaled, with everything just a short romantic walk across the beach. The Gourmet Inclusive offerings at El Dorado Maroma include three pools, six premier restaurants and four bars. But that’s not all. Guests can enjoy any number of stimulating resort
activities, including dancing (from slow to interpretive), yoga, beach volleyball, cooking lessons, kayaking and even bocce on the beach.
How the plot unfolds from there is up to you, your significant other and your imaginations. At the end of the day, however, it’s time to return to the ocean as the dream continues. How the plot unfolds from there is up to you, your significant other and your imaginations. When you do go to sleep, you’ll do so with the awareness that when the night ends, the dream doesn’t. There’s just a lot more natural light. And as for those glass-bottom floors in the Palafitos. You might be surprised by the exotic species you see in the water below. Then again, they might be surprised by what they see above. Q Learn more about El Dorado Maroma through your preferred travel professional or at funjet.com.

Destination Weddings
Going Above & Beyond What does it mean to have a wedding concierge for your destination wedding? Here & Beyond recently sat down with the Weddings by Funjet team to find out. B Y H E AT H E R S T E I N B E R G E R
H&B: What are the advantages of having a destination wedding? In the States, people expect a traditional wedding, so you feel you have to do that. With a destination wedding, there are no expectations. That’s very freeing.” — Kristin Godfrey, Weddings by Funjet director “I rea l ly l i ke a lternative receptions… a bonfire, a catamaran cruise, a steel drum band. There are so many creative ways to spend that qua l it y t i me.” — Karmen Schmid, concierge
“You can have the larger reception but sti l l host a private meal for family. You can do the big party the next night, and no one minds. The options are endless; you can put your own spin on it.” — Ashley Grossmann, concierge “I love favors inspired by the destination, like tequila or Jamaican coffee beans. I had one wedding reception with a taco bar. Another idea is to i ncor porate sig nat u re cocktails, maybe something with the wedding color.” — Katie Brierton, concierge “Like blue margaritas!” — K. The g room’s mother had passed away since then; at the time, I’d encouraged a mother-son dance. It was a pivotal moment, and very touching. I’ve also had guests come back to me, wanting their own destination weddings. That’s such an honor.” — K. H&B: Can a couple have a concierge on site for their wedding? “Absolutely. It’s an additional charge, but for some couples, it’s worth it. It depends on their preferences and the amount of family support they have. If we’re on site, we can answer questions, diffuse situations and make sure everyone’s having a good experience.” — K. Schmid “We can manage the details the bride doesn’t want to think about—welcome events, tying bows on chairs, and so on. We can even help avert disaster. In one case, two brides would have had competing mariachi bands within view of each other because, on paper, it was two venues. We resolved it, and our bride never knew.” — K. Godfrey

Simply Personal A Riviera Maya wedding appeals to all ages, and gives the bride the day of her dreams. B Y H E AT H E R S T E I N B E R G E R
The newlyweds savored a private moment at Generations Riviera Maya.
When Lisa Kossiski got engaged to Tom Iwanski in May 2015, she couldn’t quite envision what her wedding day might look like. She knew she wanted to get married in Mexico, but beyond that, the picture was unclear. She was embarking on her second marriage, and planning this wedding proved to be an entirely new experience for a different time of life. “I wasn’t a 20-something, wanting very specific things,” she reflects. “It’s not that my expectations weren’t high. I always knew it would be a destination wedding, but I just didn’t know what that might look like. And I couldn’t imagine doing it on my own.” Lisa approached Weddings by Funjet, advising director Kristin Godfrey and concierge Katie Brierton that she wanted to keep things simple. “I didn’t want to overdo it, and to be honest, I was thinking, ‘So we’ll have our ceremony in Spanish, have some great food and call it good,’” she says with a laugh. “No, no, no. There are so many things you wouldn’t even think of, like your decor, your photos, and especially what everyone is going to do. We had invited a significant number of guests, and I really wanted to make it special. They would be investing a lot to come.” The newlyweds get one last photo before Lisa memorably "trashed the dress" in a cenote at Rancho Bonanza.

ROMANCE AND WEDDING ISSUE
With more than 100 people expected for the weeklong wedding festivities, the team worked hard to select just the right resort property, one that would appeal to all ages. They found it with Generations Riviera Maya, an elegant all-inclusive resort known for the Karisma Gourmet Inclusive experience with oversized, oceanfront, all-suite accommodations.
Photos by Bridal Moments
The concierges also worked closely with Lisa to pinpoint those extra personal touches that would make her wedding day truly her own. “The best thing about a destination wedding is that you have so many different options,” Lisa observes. “And with all their expertise, the concierges really can help you think outside the box. Not only did I want to keep things simple, some personalization was important to me, and they gave me ideas I’d never considered.” Lisa, Tom and their guests flew to Mexico on Tuesday, Aug. 2. They had plenty of time to enjoy the resort before the first major wedding-related activity, the Thursday rehearsal, followed by an evening catamaran ride. “We didn’t want to overplan, but we did want to do the catamaran,” Lisa says. “After all, who doesn’t want to go on a boat ride?” She walked down the aisle at 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 5, at the resort’s beachfront chapel. The sounds of a string quartet filled the air. “The music was fun, uplifting, with songs you’d never expect from a string quartet,” she recalls. “And the wooden chapel was so beautiful. It was the simplicity I wanted. It moves me still, remembering how I stood there, listening to my husband say his vows.” Afterward, the group convened upstairs at the Sky Lounge Bar for cocktails. It was a beautiful location to watch the sunset and start the celebration. “We had someone there drawing caricatures,” Lisa remembers. “That was a huge hit with the children, and again, I wouldn’t have even thought of it without the help of a Weddings by Funjet concierge.” Then it was time for dinner, and dancing on the pier. All ages enjoyed the revelry. “The DJ really was able to keep things moving,” Lisa says. “My husband and I are both from Wisconsin, and we both have Polish heritage, so he played a polka!
The resort's pier was ready for a memorable night of dinner and dancing.
With so many personalized touches, the bride saw her vision of a simple, elegant wedding day come to life.
It was an interesting group, from little kids to older people, and I loved seeing my little niece and an elderly relative on the dance floor at the same time,” she continues. “It was a large crowd, but a personal crowd. Everyone there was very important to us.” The next day, Weddings by Funjet arranged a day trip to Punta Maroma for interested guests. And, although some guests chose to leave Sunday, at least 30 elected to stay through Tuesday, Aug. 9 and return home with the newlyweds—who then jetted off to Italy for a honeymoon tour through Rome, Florence and the Mediterranean coast. “Weddings by Funjet made sure everything was set up perfectly,” Lisa says of her destination wedding experience. “They truly went above and beyond for us.” Q

Treat: Although there are many exciting activities planned, and so many reasons to get out the door, you can add a few simple yet meaningful touches to spoil your company during their quiet time. Chocolates and mini Champagne bottles are perfectly petite yet so satisfying. Equip: Upon check-in, make sure each of your guests receives a care package filled with thoughtful and fun amenities. Try mini native liquors and food items to complement their new experiences. Comfort: Leave Turkish beach blankets in each room. These 100-percent cotton blankets have multiple uses as a bath towel, beach blanket and towel. Plus, your guests will leave with a signature item that they can use many times. Prepare: Pack a proper beach bag for each guest with some practical and fun items like sunglasses, a bottle of water, personalized sunscreen and maybe the latest read, “Your Story,” which of course is the tale of how the two of you met, and how thankful you are that each person made the trip.
Dance: Leave a couple pairs of flip-flops in each guest room. They’ll come in handy for dancing at the wedding and daily beach strolls.
Add some ah: A destination wedding is full of experiences; make sure there are some relaxing ones. Destination resort spas are some of the best in the world, so surprise guests with a luxurious spa treatment. Excite: Get in a festive mood with an excursion. From swimming with dolphins to a catamaran cruise, unique outings will create even more joy for everyone. Evoke: Set the mood for spontaneity and have a campfire on the beach for some good-old-fashioned fun.
Light up the night: Create a ceremony that includes sparklers, and encourage guests to participate for a truly festive and memorable evening. Share: Ask each guest to write his or her name and well wishes on a note and slide it into a large bottle. Instead of a guest book, you’ll go home with your very own set of “messages in a bottle.” For a fun twist, create a personalized label to commemorate the special occasion. Seal: Ask your family members to stamp their thumbprints onto a tree print. These will be the leaves on an emblematic and personal family tree.

Hawaii: A Lifelong Affair ALOHA. There’s no better way to begin an exploration of the romantic possibilities of Hawaii than this magical word. You might already know that aloha has the hula-dancing flexibility to mean both hello and goodbye. Legendary writer Jack London put it this way, with passion: “In what other land save this one is the commonest form of greeting not ‘Good day,’ nor ‘How d‘ye do’, but ‘Love’? That greeting is ‘aloha’: love, I love you, my love to you.” We may all be living in a social world of “likes,” but a romantic world of loves—of aloha—sounds a lot more inviting. In Hawaii, the invitation is handwritten, with little hearts all over, sealed with a kiss and sent to couples everywhere and at every stage of life’s romantic journey. “The lei was only the beginning, “says Emily Temple of Funjet Vacations. “Hawaiians embody the essence of travel: discovery, respect for diversity and the idea of being one people. There is so much history to the islands, and when you visit, you become part of it.” Hawaii has so much to love, so much that is uniquely Hawaiian. We know you’re ready for an Hawaiian experience and the opportunity to find your own aloha.
At First Sight Natural Wonders, Views, Tours Expect your heart to feel some magic when you and your significant other arrive, whether it’s the first time or the latest. Wherever you venture, Hawaii is a feast for the eyes—and all the other senses. There’s only one way to begin—with a spectacular Hawaiian sunrise. You can’t go wrong anywhere. But Maui’s Haleakalá National Park is truly above and beyond. Your observation deck is a 10,000-foot dormant volcano. As the stars fade, watch for the first glow of light and find a place to sit along the rock wall. You’ll have the best seat in the house. Now that you’re up, picture this: a place so phenomenal it’s called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. It’s Kauai’s Waimea Canyon. Ten miles long and 3,000 feet deep, the shifting light and colors of this amazing natural attraction will mesmerize you. To find a more beautiful drive other than Maui’s Road to Hana, you might have to check other planets. This curvy coastal road offers views of cliffs, waterfalls, beaches and rainforest. Double your waterfall pleasure with the sheer beauty of Twin Falls. Wailua Falls, Kauai
Get out and stretch your legs with a stop at the Kaupo General Store where it’s a step back in time. Just before the town of Hana, you’ll find Waianapanapa State Park & Black Sand Beach. Here, you’ll be transported to another world and time by the ancient lava caves, sea arches, and the pitch-black basalt rocks that become the famous black sand of Hawaiian lore and legend. That’s the land. Now let’s hit the water, via catamaran on a sunset dinner cruise. While you’re sipping drinks and taking in an awe-inspiring view of the sunset, dolphins may jump up for a view of the two of you. Of course, when the sun goes down, the stars come out. And so do lovers of stargazing. On the Big Island that means Mauna Kea, the highest mountain in the state at nearly 14,000 feet. Here, the landscape is surreal and the sky is all stars—and all yours. Christy Calabrese of the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau says it best: “Breathtaking landscapes and views offer the perfect backdrop, and it is the only-in-Hawaii experiences that make the Hawaiian Islands one of the most romantic destinations in the world.”

HAWAIIAN PHRASES There may be only 13 letters in the Hawaiian alphabet, but the meanings go a long way. B Y L I S A B E T H DAYA N
Welcome to Ólelo Hawaii (the Hawaiian language). As one of the oldest languages in the world, it wasn’t until 1978 that it was recognized as one of the official languages of the state of Hawaii, other than English. This makes it the only American state to have two official languages. When early explorers heard Hawaiian it sounded very similar to Polynesian language, such as Tahitian and Maori. Today, the language has been revived, perfect for your practice and use. I love you
Aloha au ia oe (ah loh’ hah vau’ ee (Y)AH’ oe) All of my love
Aloha Nui Loa (ah loh hah (w)ee loh (w)ah) Forever
Mau Loa (Maw-oo Low-ah)
Some people follow the whispers of their hearts. Others follow shout-outs from their adrenal glands. In Hawaii, you can do both. Not only that, you can do all the action and adventure things you love with the one you love. How aloha is that? Altogether, the main islands—Hawaii, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai and Maui—are the dream team of island adventure. There’s more than one way for your hearts to beat as one. Be a high-flying legend with a thrilling doors-off helicopter ride over Oahu with Blue Sky Tours. The unobstructed, once-in-a-lifetime views would make any Hawaiian hawk screech with joy. When you come back to earth, you’ll want to hit the ground running. Actually, we’ll let the horses do that. You’ll be high in the saddle, like the legendary paniolo of Hawaii’s historic “cowboy culture.” On the Big Island, you and your partner can take a horseback tour of Waipo Valley, its waterfall trails and the ancient Valley of the Kings. There’s horse power and there’s horsepower. So rev things up UTV-style on the Munro Trail on Lanai. UTV means utility terrain vehicle. It also means seating for two. As off-road vehicles go, it’s a beauty, but no match for the hot-wheeling aesthetics of this 12.8-mile dirt road hugged by rainforest. The spectacular canyon views of Maunalei Gulch will rock your world, as will the scenic overlook with views of Maui, Molokai, the Big Island and Oahu. Save a spot on a whale-watching adventure in the ‘A’uau Channel. The best time to see the humpbacks, known locally as kohola, is November to May. Many experts believe the whale song is a male serenading a potential partner. So sweet. Even more precious is when one of them blasts above the surface with 45 tons of passion.

Hot To Trot Food, Culture, Nightlife People talk about the aloha spirit. But what is it? Is it the universal force the Hawaiians call mana—the secret for attaining true health, happiness and success? Is it the spirit of nature, so all-pervasive in a place that is as true a paradise as any on earth? Is it the inclusive spirit of the original Hawaiian culture and the diversity of cultures that call Hawaii home? The answer is simple. Yes to all. “More than anything, you will find the aloha spirit in the people,” says United Vacations’ Camilla Aluli, who lives on Oahu. “Nothing would make them happier than for you to feel the love and the joy they feel.” So it’s time to truly embrace Hawaii and celebrate. Hawaii will hug you back. The word luau instantly generates pictures in your mind. At Paradise Cove on Oahu, you’ll enjoy a superlative Hawaiian luau with traditional music and, yes, hula, hula, hula. The famous kalua pig highlights the menu, but save room for the fire dancers. We can’t guarantee it’ll light your own fire, but we have a warm feeling it will. Love the arts? Then take a walk on the creative side at the Hanapepe Town Art Walk. Each Friday night, the charming town of Hanapepe on Kauai’s West Side unveils another masterpiece. Meet local artists, musicians and craftspeople. Visit the delightful local eateries, shops and galleries. And paint the town red, or whatever color combination you like. There exists only one royal residence on United States soil. And Hawaii is extending an invitation for you and a guest to visit. It’s ‘Iolani Palace in downtown Honolulu, once the official residence of Hawaiian royalty. Lovingly restored to its Old World elegance, the 10-room, four-story Italian Renaissance home was wired for electricity before the White House and Buckingham Place. Now that’s power. Where can you visit authentic villages and meet the natives of six Pacific cultures in a single day—and without paddling a single stroke? Welcome to the Polynesian Culture Center on Oahu’s northern shore. Experience the unique island cultures from Hawaii, Samoa, Fiji, Tahiti, Tonga and the Marquesas Islands. Unforgettable exhibits. Enthralling performances. There’s a lot to love. Farm-to-Table, Maui
HAWAIIAN ESSENTIALS Hawaiian culture is rich with beautiful traditions, and easy to celebrate. B Y L I S A B E T H DAYA N
LEI • Made with flowers or leaves and worn around the neck or head. • Other materials used are shells, seeds, nuts, feathers and sometimes bone. • There is no gender specificity—men love flowers too! • Not to be discarded in the trash, but returned to nature minus the string and ribbon. • Pregnant women should wear an open lei, an ancient superstition still practiced today. • Considered impolite and rude to refuse a lei.
HULA • Anciently only practiced by men. • Forbidden by the missionaries in the 1800s. • Modern hula added string instruments – ukulele (Portuguese in origin), slack-key guitar, bass and steel guitar. • Hapa haole music is the blending of Hawaiian and English words with a Hawaiian melody.
LUAU • Besides taking place in a backyard, beach or park, luau are also held for graduations and wedding receptions. • Local families still celebrate baby luau when a child turns one. Ancient Hawaii had a high infant mortality rate, and if baby made it to one, it was cause for celebration. • Commercial luau is what visitors know as a blend of Polynesian dances, Hawaiian games and crafts, cultural exhibits, as well as a buffet -style feast and a mai tai.

WHERE TO STAY
The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Waikiki Beach, Oahu The only thing more seductive than the luxury offered inside the stylishly appointed accommodations at The Ritz-Carlton is the views of the Pacific Ocean from every unit. It doesn’t end there though. Situated at the gateway to world-renowned Waikiki Beach, the resort is just steps away from Luxury Row and vibrant Kalakaua Avenue, where the shopping and dining experiences are also world-class.
Kaanapali Beach Hotel A whale-shaped pool won’t be the only wonder outside your sliding doors. Situated in tropical gardens, there is a 20-foot checkerboard and authentic Hawaiian activities from a hula show to lei making and hularobics. The resort is located near the Kaanapali Golf Course, plus the beachfront walkway connects to the famed Whalers Village as well as other Kaanapali area hotels.
Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort and Spa, Oahu Let urban energy mesh with the natural beauty of Waikiki Beach and the surrounding area. With a newly renovated lobby, the Marriott Waikiki Beach Resort & Spa is on 5 acres of lush island landscape and steps from the beach. The Diamond Head Crater, Honolulu Zoo and Waikiki Aquarium are a short walk away from the resort. The Arizona Memorial, Sea life Park, Polynesian Cultural Center and other iconic attractions are a short drive.
The Fairmont Kea Lani, Maui With awards from Travel & Leisure, TripAdvisor, Brides and U.S. News and World Report, the Fairmont Kea Lani has something for everyone. Located on Maui’s Wailea coast, it is Hawaii’s only all-suite and villa oceanfront resort. Teen activities include scavenger hunts and canoe excursions, while the kid’s club offers Hawaiian-inspired activities like experimental erupting volcanos and hula lessons.
Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa On the island’s sunny south shore, appropriately surrounded and infused with gardens, Grand Hyatt Kauai’s backyard is a network of pools, rivers and enclaves, not to mention the 1.5-acre saltwater lagoon and a 150-foot slide. Try the Enrich program, which offers volunteer programs on island. Some opportunities include walking a shelter dog or participating in an environmental cleanup.
Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort, Oahu Enjoy views of Diamond Head and radiant sunsets at this beachfront resort. Located near Waikiki Beach Walk, you’ll be in the heart of island art, fashion and fine dining. Island spirit is found in Outrigger’s Signature Experiences with an array of cultural programs and special services including: Hawaiian vow renewal ceremony, lei making, ukulele and hula lessons.
The St. Regis Princeville Resort, Kauai Situated in a secluded cove on Kauai’s north shore, it’s considered one of the most spectacular destinations in Hawaii. Oceanside massages, celebration rituals and retail boutiques will give you aloha in no time. Don’t miss the golf courses: a Robert Trent Jones IIdesigned course, a newly renovated Makai course and the award-winning Prince course.
Hilton Waikoloa Village Only 20 minutes from Kona International Airport, you’ll feel like you’re in another world. This sprawling tropical resort on the Big Island’s Kohala Coast has its own tram system. But we prefer to take our time on the canal boats. Also, don’t miss the most popular luau on the island, Legends of Hawaii.
Andaz Maui at Wailea This resort redefines luxury with a nontraditional approach, offering a secluded tropical hideaway with authentic modern touches. Located on Maui’s premier southwestern coastline along Mokapu Beach, the 15-acre beachfront resort boasts a contemporary Andaz signature style while successfully capturing the spirit of the Hawaiian Islands.
Royal Kona Resort An oceanfront swimming pool, private beach and saltwater lagoon are just as welcoming as the exceptional service at Royal Kona. You’re only steps to the town of Kona for dining and shopping, and a short drive to Volcanoes National Park. But don’t miss the weekly Legends of Hawaiian Music Series concerts at Don’s Mai Tai Bar for live music and for one (or more) of their 10 types of mai tais.

Relaxation, Wellness, Bliss Body. Mind. Spirit. The ancient Hawaiians believed that these three aspects were so intricately connected that a person could not be healthy in one without being healthy in all three. Today, couples who are seeking to celebrate and strengthen their own intricate connection will enjoy the mystical pleasures of ancient ways coupled with those of a distinctly contemporary nature. “From sun, sand and surf to adventure and foodie fun, Hawaii has something for every couple looking for an once-in-a-lifetime experience,” Calabrese says. Whether it’s a traditional Lomi Lomi beach massage for two by candlelight, natural hydrotherapy in Hawaii’s legendary healing waters, or a transcendental, hand-in-hand walk on the beach at sunset, the two of you will find a whole lot to love. It all comes together on the beach of Hanalei Bay with Kauai’s lush green forests rolling down to the sea. A special couple strolling barefoot in the sand. It’s picture perfect. So send us a selfie, OK? True love has a way of transcending everything. So take a little break from the animal kingdom and join the plants. The Big Island’s Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden has the transformative power, with over 2,000 species of tropical plants in a gorgeous 40-acre valley. You and yours will never have a more lovely opportunity to, as they say, stop and smell the flowers. Spend some time among the fresh produce, flowers and made-only-in-Hawaii items at any of the islands’ local farmers markets. You’ll also find the famous Hawaiian beef, aquacultured seafood and local honey. When you’re ready for that couple’s massage, the oceanside is waiting. In fact, it’s had a place reserved for you for centuries. The healing art of the Lomi Lomi massage has been practiced in Hawaii even longer. Another name for it is “Loving Hands.” Or you can think of it as the massage so nice they named it twice. Better yet, don’t think anything, just breathe and enjoy. “Hawaii is the perfect romantic location for all ages because if fulfills

all the sensory requirements of love,” Aluli says. “The people are warm and loving, the air is warm and sweet with the scent of blossoms, the sites are varied and awe-inspiring and the sounds of the ocean, music, and laughter open the heart to romance.” When the time comes, here’s how to give Hawaii a special goodbye kiss. On the Big Island, you can plant a koa tree with Hawaii Legacy Hardwood. Koa wood has an honored heritage in Hawaii. The ancients believed that the spiritual energy in all things was especially present in the koa tree. So honor the koa and celebrate your Hawaiian experience together. The rainforest will love you for it, forever. Once you experience the spirit of aloha, the loving spirit will always be with you. Just as you can be far away from the one you love and still feel that person with you, so too with Hawaii. Maybe that’s the ultimate meaning of aloha. That even when we’re apart, our love holds us together. With that, we say aloha. Goodbye, hello and especially, love. Q

oon wrasses flitted through holes in the reef while a school of jacks whirled in the deep blue overhead. I turned to make eye contact with my dive buddy, eager to share this vibrant moment at 60 feet. I saw Richard writing on his dive slate. Concerned that something might be wrong, I finned to his side and peered at the slate. It held the five simple words that would change our lives forever. “Will you be my wife?” He slipped the sparkling ring on my finger as we hovered among the reef fish. We held hands on our ascent, and when we finally reached the surface, our fellow divers and the Fijian boat crew burst into cheers and raucous applause. These memories still evoke the unparalleled joy of that long-ago day in the South Pacific. It was simply perfect for us, and celebrating our romantic milestones through travel has become a lifelong journey. We got married on Isla Cozumel, in the midst of a two-week dive vacation; just a year later, we dashed off to Tulum for an utterly decadent babymoon adorned with Maya ruins, white-sand beaches, plunge pools and fruity virgin cocktails (for me, at least). Travel magnifies the intensity of our experiences and our emotions, which means it can infuse life’s most treasured moments with a distinctive and everlasting magic. From proposals and weddings to babymoons and anniversary celebrations, romantic getaways overflow with thrilling adventures, exotic cultures and personalized luxury. What’s more, they’re absolutely attainable for all ages and all walks of life.

THE PROPOSAL: Paint Your Canvas in Las Vegas
Nothing is more thrilling than creating a proposal that captures who you are as a couple. For that reason, few destinations can match Las Vegas, which offers quite literally something for everyone. At Caesar’s Palace Las Vegas, you can guide your partner through ornate gardens to just the right spot under a graceful gazebo, surrounded by shimmering pools and leafy palms. You can put your proposal into dreamy Parisian light at the Eiffel Tower, say the words aboard a helicopter hovering over the Grand Canyon, or drop to one knee atop the 550-foot High Roller observation wheel, with the entire city gleaming through your cabin’s glass walls. At its glittering heart, Las Vegas is essentially a blank canvas waiting to be painted. All you need to do is find the right partner to help you bring your unique vision to life. At Caesar’s Palace, for example, the professional coordinators in wedding services can design a custom proposal package, whether it’s a Roman-themed extravaganza or a glamorous rooftop proposal at Nobu Restaurant, in the heart of the resort complex’s Nobu Hotel. The full proposal experience also means appreciated touches like VIP check-in, nightly rose-petal turn-down service, access to VIP lounges, personalized bathrobes, Champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries. “We’ve seen more coordinated proposals in the last couple of years, but it’s not advertised much,” says Desirae Parker, manager of wedding services at Caesar’s Palace.
“People don’t know exactly what to do or where to go. We love planning for these couples. Everyone on our team gets so excited, because it’s emotional for us, too.” Las Vegas is truly all about taking your vision to a new level. At Wynn Las Vegas and Encore, staff work closely with guests to create truly customized—and unforgettable—proposal experiences. “We can do something as simple as a single rose and candles in our Primrose Courtyard,” says Rochelle Clayton, director of the Wedding Salon at Wynn Las Vegas. “We also can arrange a more elaborate presentation that incorporates a pathway of petals to a private, candlelit table for two with Champagne. Once, we hosted a surprise proposal that featured a mariachi band. “We have resources for everything, and we’ll assist you from start to finish,” she continued. “Customizing is a great way to go these days, and we love helping our guests create these incredibly unique romantic moments.”

“What makes Jamaica truly special is the diversity of where one actually can get married, whether it’s on the beach, in lush gardens, in the shadow of historical ruins, in a wedding chapel or in a ballroom,” she adds. “Whether you want something a little more laid-back or more elaborate, we have a comprehensive landscape for any dream to come true.” Couples might wish to say their vows in the graceful Prospect Chapel, or amid the verdant ferns at Dr. Robert Page’s whimsical Ruins at the Falls. An intrepid few might envision saying “I Do at 700 Feet,” soaring in a chairlift over the treetops at Rainforest Adventures at Mystic Mountain, while others select a resort venue so their wedding and honeymoon seamlessly blend into what Sandals calls a WeddingMoon. Wherever you choose to marry, accommodations will be key. THE BIG DAY: Celebrating One Love in Jamaica
The most common misconception about destination weddings is that they only happen on the beach. To explore all the possibilities, with an extra dose of culture, fun and exotic island spirit, look no farther than the country of One Love. “Couples are attracted to the beauty of Jamaica, its topography, its azure waters, its gorgeous sunsets and, most importantly, the richness of its history, its people, and the depth of its culture,” says MarshaAnn Donaldson-Brown, director of romance for Sandals Resorts International. “It’s simply one of the most magnetic islands.

THE BABYMOON: Savor Togetherness in Quintana Roo
Couples awaiting the arrival of their first child have created their own romantic milestone, a way to spend quality time together before the ride of their lives begins. Called a babymoon, this trip is a careful mix of adventure, relaxation and wellness. The Mexican state of Quintana Roo is an increasingly popular choice. Flight times from the United States are comfortably short, and despite the party reputation of its Zona Hotelera, the Cancún area is a couples’ haven.

Not only can you focus on each other, you can enjoy the myriad details of personalized service. At Live Aqua Cancún, that service extends to understanding a mother-to-be’s unique needs, from special pillows and protected beach cabanas to nutrition. “The more information we get, the more we can pamper you,” Gon-Ryan says. “Our executive chef can work with you to create flavorful dishes that will be good for you and your baby, like chilaquiles that aren’t too spicy.” In addition, the Aqua Spa provides a relaxing Baby On Board treatment, and bartenders craft nonalcoholic drinks that still taste special and indulgent. Babymooners are tagged within the resort’s system, so all staff members will know them—and take good care of them.

25TH ANNIVERSARY: Rekindle the Fire in New Orleans
“A successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person,” wrote American journalist and author Mignon McLaughlin. And falling in love again is effortless while you’re immersed in a place that has its own unquenchable fire. New Orleans shines as a romantic destination, with its languid Mississippi River breezes, fragrant bougainvillea and evocative architecture. Its relaxed Southern pace and colorful cultural traditions encourage visitors to savor every pleasure. “Just being in New Orleans enlivens the senses in a way that’s hard to describe,” says the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau’s Kristian Sonnier, a Louisiana native. “It’s in the way we eat, drink, laugh and celebrate life. When you feel it for the first time, it’s undeniable.” You might enjoy an early dinner at Meaux Bar, an intimate bistro with a locally inspired menu of perfect-to-
share small and large plates. Then, stroll through the French quarter’s Jackson Square while the St. Louis Cathedral bells chime, or if it’s rainy, tour the quarter’s narrow, lamplit 18th century streets in a horse-drawn carriage. Some couples might elect to cruise the Mississippi River aboard the Steamboat Natchez, but for a more private experience, simply drift down Bayou St. John in a canoe at sunset.
If you wish to explore the Sculpture Garden and Botanical Gardens at City Park, don’t miss the opportunity to visit Ralph’s on the Park, a finedining establishment in an 1860s parkside home. Or, relax in luxury at the Woodhouse Spa or Belladonna Day Spa, and then savor an opulent meal at Restaurant August, Chef John Besh’s flagship restaurant. To complete any romantic occasion, consider staying at one of New Orleans’

But, in the end, your experience in the Crescent City can be whatever you desire. “The boozy brunch at Brennan’s, poolside drinks at the Ace Hotel, beignets and coffee at sunrise… all these things are romantic to me,” Sonnier says. “That’s what’s so wonderful about New Orleans. A couple can find romance around any corner. The city lends itself to everyone’s interpretation of romance.” Q Celebrate your romantic milestone through a once-in-a-lifetime vacation.
