2015 Notebook A Quick Look The Blue Valley North Mustangs and Head Coach Andy Sims welcome back 18 returning starters and 13 All-Conference players for the 2015 season. The season opener is set for September 4 at the District Athletic Complex against Blue Valley Southwest. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00pm.

A Look Back The 2014 Mustangs were looking to rebuild from years of lackluster football, a program that had only won one game in three seasons and only returned one senior who had lettered from the 2013 season. The Mustangs started the season strong, staying competitive in each of their first five games including a 7pt loss to Blue Valley Southwest week one, a game in which the Mustangs had a chance to tie as time expired. It wasn’t until week 6, that the Mustangs would be able to break a 19 game losing streak and get their first win on the season with a 31-15 victory. The Mustangs carried that momentum in district play, but fell short in their first game against Shawnee Mission South. The Mustangs had 3 touchdowns called back and could not outlast the Raiders before finally falling 21-9. The Mustangs would rebound the following week by beating Shawnee Mission Northwest 45-35 in an offensive shoot out in which the Mustangs racked up 660yds of total offense. In the final game of the season the Mustangs picked up where they left off, heading in halftime aginst Shawnee Mission West up 21-7. However, that would be all the points the Mustang would score and late Mustang mistakes would set the Vikings up for a walkoff field goal that would end the game and the Mustangs season by the score 24-21.

2015 Notebook Program History

The 2015 Season will mark the 29th season of football at Blue Valley North High School. Coach Sims became the 8th head coach in program history in March 2014. The Mustangs have won the EKL Championship four times, most recently under the helm of Troy Morris in 2002. The Mustangs also have 6 district championships and advanced to both the Regional and Sectional Championships during the 2003 season, both of which came under Coach Morris in 2003.

For Starters The Mustangs return 18 players who started last season and over 14 more who saw significant playing time, earning all earning varsity letters.

Winning More Often The Mustangs only managed 2 wins on the varisty level, but that was 2 more than they have seen in the previous three season combined and the winning did not stop there. Both the Junior Varisty and Freshman teams went 6-3 with two losses coming by 7pts or less. It was the first time in over 10years that the Mustangs were able to sweep an opponent at all levels (V/JV/FR) and the Mustangs did twice in 2014.

Iron, Ultimiate & Super Mustangs

Although the EKL and Kansas State High School Athletic Association does not have Academic AllConference or Academic All-State teams will not dimminish from the fact that the Mustangs have one of the highest GPA’s in the EKL and the state of Kansas. 86% of the Mustang football players carry a 3.0 or higher GPA and nine players had a perfect 4.0 during the 2014-2015 School year.

When Coach Sims implemented his Athlete Development Program he also created an incentive program that recognizes the tremendous gains players make in the lifts of Bench, Squat and Power Clean. If a player lifts a combined weight of 800lbs they earn Iron Mustang status. If the combined weight totals 900lbs they earn Ultimate Mustang and if the weight totals 1,000lbs then they become a Super Mustang and will have a banner hung in the weight room. Below are players who earned one of the honors from this past year.

2015 BVN MUSTANGS FOOTBALL Mustangs look to navigate a competitive EKL in 2015 The 2014 Season was one of big wins and narrow losses for Blue Valley North as they went 2-7 overall, 1-5 in conference and 1-2 in Districts just missing out on the postseason. 2 of their 7 loses came from 7 points or less, dropping week 1 vs. Blue Valley Southwest 25-19 and Week 9 vs. Shawnee Mission West 24-21. However, the Mustangs ended the season with their best record in 3 seasons and achieved many personal and team records along the way. The 2015 Mustangs return 30 letter winners and 20 starters from last season squad. BVN will play a 9 game regular season schedule. The first 6 are conference games and the last 3 games are district games, which determine postseason play.

OFFENSE Mustangs return talented group of skill players in 2015 The Mustang offense returns 11 starters from the 2014 squad that led the EKL in passing offense during the regular season. Ryan Klepper returns to anchor an offensive line after an All-Conference season a year ago. Honorable Mention Tackle, Pete Klug moves to starting Defensive End, but will continue as an offensive lineman in a reserve role. All-EKL quarterback Joey Dolan and All-EKL wide receiver Alex Blake return to lead an explosive offense that also brings back All –EKL Josh Pederson who is a threat at Tight End. Cooper Lantefield and Carter Howes will provide a one-two punch in the backfield and resurrect a run game which hasn’t seen dominance since current Defensive Coordinator Casey Curran was in the backfield in mid 2000’s. Dolan threw for over 2,000 yards and 16 touchdowns last season, while Blake hauled in over 700 yards on 45 receptions and 8 touchdowns. Pederson and Howes combined for 59 receptions for 750 yards and 6 touchdowns last season.

DEFENSE Experienced group returns to anchor defense in 2015 The defense returns 15 letter winners and 7 starters from last year’s squad that ranked 1st in the EKL in Pass Defense. Leading the way in the secondary is the Mustangs top tackler from 2014 and All-EKL selection Safety Jack Gordon. Alongside of Gordon will be another EKL selection at Corner, Joe Lippoli. Newcomer Jake Van Tassel and returner Keilon Hunter look to make their own impact in the secondary. Up front, Pete Klug returns and looks to build on his 2014 All-Conference season. Newcomers Brian Nam and Matt McGruder along veteran John Hennessey look to provide stability to a shaky and often revolving door of a defensive line from 2014. Leading the Linebacker Corp are 3 year starters and All-EKL selections Carter Howes and Angus Stoddart. Stoddart will also move into a Pass Rush position this fall. Returner Madison Carrera-Welch is back at Rush Linebacker position and former Safety Spencer Bodenhamer makes the move to the Will Linebacker position after an injury plagued 2014 season.

Head Coach – Andy Sims

Andy Sims HEAD COACH

2nd SEASON

Andy Sims was named the 6th Head Coach in Blue Valley North history in March of 2014 Now entering his second season, he led the Mustangs to a 2-7 overall, 1-5 in conference and 1-2 in District Play in his first year. Already, the Mustangs have made record achievements not only in football, but also many other key areas such as Strength & Conditioning and Player Development. A huge sign of growth for the Mustangs and the work that his staff have done to rebuild the program came in their two victories in 2014 over GardnerEdgerton and Shawnee Mission Northwest. The Mustangs showed flashes throughout the entire season and were close to victory in several other games, but it was during their Homecoming and District Game that the Mustangs truly shined. A proven winner, Sims comes to North with a long list of programs that have seen a turnaround during his time there as either a player, an assistant coach or as the head coach. “My family and I couldn't be more thrilled to be joining Blue Valley North,” said Sims. “I feel very confident we will put a plan in place that will allow our student-athletes to compete for championships on and off the field.” Sims, who has experience at both the collegiate and high school levels, seems to have a knack for turning around struggling football programs into teams that are known for their explosive and up tempo offense and physical defenses. “You got to have fun playing football,”

2-7 (.222) RECORD AT BVN

said Sims. “Not only do we like to play fast on both sides of the ball, but we are very physical and play with a lot of swagger.” Sims’ passion for the game of football and his coaching style really stood out to Blue Valley North Assistant Principal and Athletic Director Mickey Masterson. “His enthusiasm and passion are contagious,” said Masterson. “I am confident that Coach Sims will be a great fit at Blue Valley North on the field and in the classroom.” “It all starts with an identity and what kind of legacy you want to leave,” said Sims. The weight room is also a vital step in the rebuilding process. According to Sims, great football programs are built in the weight room. “I still believe that kids want to be a part of something great and want to challenge themselves every day,” said Sims. “What kid wouldn’t love to look at himself in the mirror at the end of a grueling practice or training session, with the sweat dripping off his face, knowing that no matter how hard it got, no matter how badly he wanted too, that he never broke, that he was pushed to his limit and never gave up? That is how winning is done!” Sims has certainly seen his share of players rise up and overcome the odds to become winners on and off the field. Prior to North, Sims served as Defensive Coordinator and Running Backs Coach for one season at Leavenworth High School. In just one season, Sims’ defense set school records and he helped coach Running Back Jason Randall to 1st team All-Sunflower League honors and earn a DI FCS scholarship to Missouri State as well as coaching Jordan & Jarred Donnellson who both signed at Butler CC. The Pioneers would also make the playoffs for only the 2nd time in school history in 2013.

Head Coach – Andy Sims Sims came to Leavenworth after a successful stint as the Head Coach at Excelsior Springs. Under Sims’ leadership the Tigers went from a struggling 1-9 start to a 7-3 playoff team. In addition to Head Coach, Sims also served as the offensive coordinator. In 2012 the Tigers had the best start in 42 years, outscored its opponents by 37ppg and held opponents to less than 17ppg. During Sims tenure the Tigers increased their scholarship recipients by 300%, saw their team GPA rise from 2.3 to 3.1 and set over 500 weight room records.

During his time at UCM, Sims had the opportunity to coach several All-Conference, All-Region, AllAmerican and future NFL players such as the Tennessee Titans Delanie Walker.

From 2008 – 2010, Sims served as the Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator at Liberty High school, which at the time was the one of the largest high schools in the state of Missouri. The previously struggling Blue Jay program was just 3-7 in 2007, but shot to a 7-3 record in 2008 and then an 8-3 record and playoff berth in 2009. Again Sims would help athletes move on to the next level. The Blue Jay's Marcus Lucas earned a scholarship to the University of Missouri and currently playing for the Carolina Panthers. Other Jays would also earn scholarships to D-II programs such as Jack Bissonette at William Jewell, Jared Haferbier, Garret White and Derek Koon at Truman State University.

A graduate of UCM, Sims was an All-Conference Linebacker for the Mules. During his senior season, he helped his team to a 10-2 mark and a 48-17 victory over the University of Minnesota-Duluth in the 2001 Mineral Water Bowl and ended the season ranked #17 in D-II. Sims is now part of two UCM teams that are currently in the Mule’s Hall of Fame, once as a player and once as a coach.

While at Liberty, Sims also implemented a very successful Athlete Development Program and Leadership Training Program, which resulted in the Blue Jays breaking 250 personal records, 28 AllTime Strength records, 41 Top Ten Strength records and 45 Top Ten Speed & Agility Records. Sims is also a proven college coach. He has served two different stints as Linebacker’s Coach and Strength and Conditioning Coordinator at the University of Central Missouri from 20022007. During this time Mules compiled 35-16 record, a playoff berth and a share of the MIAA Conference Championship. According to Willie Fritz, the Mules all-time winningest Head Coach and current Head Coach at Division 1 Georgia Southern, “Andy is one of the hardest working and

In 2005 Sims was named the Defensive Coordinator at Culver-Stockton College. While at CulverStockton College Sims’ “Swarm & Punish” defense ranked #1 in every statistical category in the Heart of America Athletic Conference and finished the season as the #9 ranked Defense in the nation.

Prior to attending UCM, Sims was a standout football player at Fort Osage High School for Hall of Fame Coach Jerry Boyce. Despite missing his sophomore and junior season, after suffering two broken legs, Sims returned his senior year and was named 1st team All-Conference, 1st team AllDistrict, 1st team All-Area, 1st team All-Metro and 1st team All-State his senior season. Sims was also selected as the Examiner’s Defensive Player of the Year and invited to play in both the MissouriKansas All-Star and Lions All-Star games. Sims holds a Bachelors in Education and a Master’s Degree in School Administration, both from the University of Central Missouri and is pursuing his CSCS National Certification in Strength & Conditioning. He will also be teaching Human Performance class as well as coordinating the Athlete Development Program. Sims and his wife Allison have two beautiful girls. Casey Curran Defensive Coordinator 2nd Season The Mustangs are excited to welcome back one of their own! Casey Curran is a former All-State Football and Wrestler from Blue Valley North and current Hall of Famer. This season, Coach Curran will take over as the Defensive Coordinator. According to Coach Sims, "Defense is a mindset. It is the ability to look deep inside your soul and find the strength to go just one more play. To run one more sprinter harder than the other guy. To put the pain on pause and push past your fear of giving up. If you are willing to go through that grind you will be great on Defense. I couldn't think of anyone that personifies that more than Casey. He’s tough and he’s a winner and that is exactly what my expectation is for our defense.” After an amazing career at BVN, in which Curran rushed for over 2,043 yards and 21 touchdowns as a senior for the Mustangs … had 64 tackles and six interceptions … named first team all-metro defensive back by Metro Sports … named all-class 6A by the Topeka Capital-Journal … played in the Kansas Shrine Bowl and the Greater Kansas City Football Coaches Association all-star game … named 810 WHB allmetro first team defensive back … honorable mention allmetro as a junior … named all-state in baseball as a senior. Casey then went on to play College football at Washburn University. At Washburn, Curran continued to excel. Starting in 38 games while playing in 46 career games. His 333 career tackles is fourth on the all-time chart for the Ichabods and his 119 tackles as a senior is ninth on the single-season chart. He recorded 22 tackles with 14 solo stops as a junior against Missouri Western which is fourth on the Ichabod single-game chart. He was a three-time second team all-MIAA selection.

Coach Curran will also be serving as the Head Wrestling coach this season and will be in the building at Blue Valley North, assisting the Special Education department.

Bill Henkel Outside Linebackers 2nd Season Bill Henkel begins his second season as an assistant coach for the Mustangs. Last season Coach Henkel coached all of the linebackers, but this season will focus primarily on the outside linebackers. A former Four-year letterman at Linebacker at the University of Illinois and two-time Academic All-Big Ten, Henkel was a key contributor in three Bowl games. According to Lou Tepper, the former Head Football Coach & Defensive Coordinator of Illinois,"In the years since we instituted(our) pursuit policy, Bill Henkel achieved the highest career pursuit grade...he lettered four years and started on the 1990 Big Ten co-championship squad...his team saw his passion to play every day in his pursuit effort. He made everyone play at a higher level...Henkel was one of only two linebackers I've ever had who (overall) graded 80 percent or higher for a whole season.” After graduating from Illinois, Henkel served as a Graduate Assistant-Recruiting & Football Operations, from 1992-1994. That “hard-hitting” and “hard-working” mentality was perfect for college football. It was Henkel’s passion for helping athletes achieve their dreams would take him from the college ranks into player management. However, the passion to coach and help young people would stay with Henkel forever and now he has the opportunity to give back to the game that has given him so much. In 2011 Henkel became a Youth Tackle Football Coach (certified by USA Football), which led him to becoming a Certified Sports Performance Coach (Level 1) by USA Weightlifting and Youth Exercise Specialist by the National Academy of Sports Medicine Prior to joining the Fighting Illini, Bill was a standout athlete at St. Teresa High School in Decatur, Illinois. The two time Captain and three year starter set the standard for hard work and determination, which paved the way into becoming an All-State Linebacker. A graduate of the University of Illinois, Henkel earned A Bachelor of Science in Business Administration-Marketing, graduating with Honors, 1991 and then went on and earned a Master of Science, Kinesiology-Sports Management, 1994. Bill is married to Lynette and together they have two daughters, Lyndsey and Lexie.
