The Market Changes... So does BWI!

A

lmost every day at BWI we discuss what the future may hold for us but more importantly for our customer base. We realize without healthy customers the health of BWI is affected as well. These discussions must lead to action items for BWI because hoping for the best has never worked out for us or, I doubt any other distributors. As background, we think about the distributors that are not around anymore in all of our markets. Many did not have plans for succession, did not reinvest in their facilities, did not fill in the holes left by quality employees with new quality employees or became irrelevant in the market place for a variety of reasons. So what did we learn from those happenings? • BWI has three generations of family ownership that are active in the ongoing business • BWI continues to invest in our facilities and rolling stock • Expansions at three locations in 2017 • Opened a new location in Norcross, GA in 2017 • New Meridian, MS distribution center to be operational in June 2018 • Electronic logs and onboard cameras on our company owned fleet • Active recruiting of major university graduates to fill any departures in our field sales staff These three activities not only build our future but we believe It helps support our customers’ futures as well by BWI remaining to be a viable partner option into the future. We are not ready to give up the services that built our loyal customer base and as a partner, we believe our health supports your health. Some other activities that we are currently building for the future are: • •

New field level ordering system improvements. We have worked hard to give your sales representatives more information at their fingertips to better serve your needs. Faster and easier processes to allow our annual EXPO to be more of a value with less user fatigue

The last aspect of BWI that we consider very important is our continued desire to diversify our offerings, market types and

account base. Every business goes through cycles and what BWI is today is a nexus of new components always supported by our core business. What does this mean? • We entered the Pest Control business segment because we believe there is a correlation between the independent PCO businesses and our independent lawn and garden account base. They are obviously in the metro areas but some of greatest success has been in the rural areas that our trucks were driving past each week anyway. • We entered the Animal Health business largely for the synergistic effect that the side of the farm and feed store that houses Animal Health supplies has with the other side of the store (lawn and garden) that we are in each week. We are growing this business at a clip that is outpacing many of our traditional markets. • Lawn Care is our next target in terms of capturing market share with above average growth rates. Again, we believe our truck is driving past these types of accounts and we just haven’t taken the time to solicit or show value to these type of accounts as we should have over the past few years. Additionally, these three markets expand our business with some of our current best and most valuable vendors that participate in these markets as well. Again more synergies that lead to more efficiencies. In closing, please know these changes to BWI required and still require a tremendous investment in resources and people but we want to be a continuing value to our account base by changing with the times but not forgetting what helped us get to this point. Please know you can count on BWI to be an option for your company for many years to come. We appreciate your business and patronage!

Natural and Organic Growing Media By Dan Jacques, Ph.D. and Stephanie Brace Ph.D.

O

ne of the biggest trends in the agriculture and horticulture markets has been the increased demand for natural and organic foods and ornamentals. Consumers want to feel that the products they eat or use in their gardens will have been produced in a safe and sustainable manner. They want to feel that they are getting food and ornamental products that have not been exposed to excessive amounts of pesticides and other chemicals. The market for fresh, organically-grown herbs in containers has also increased dramatically. This has led to a greater demand for more natural and organic growing mixes. There are a number of rules and regulations regarding what constitutes an acceptable mix for organic production. These standards are set by the National Organic Program (NOP). In addition to these regulations, some states may have additional regulations that must be followed for a grower to be certified organic. With regard to many inputs for organic production, there is a group called the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) that can approve and list a component or growing mix as meeting the NOP standards. Buying an OMRI listed component or growing medium is not absolutely required for a grower to receive organic certification, but it can make the process easier. Sun Gro Horticulture has a number of OMRI listed Natural and Organic growing media for organic production. In fact, Sun Gro was the first nation-wide producer to introduce OMRI listed Natural and Organic Mixes to professional growers. The first professional Natural and Organic (N&O) mix offered by Sun Gro was the SunshineŽ #1 N&O. This mix was an N&O version of SunshineŽ #1. Sun Gro also has OMRI listed components, for the grower who wants to create their own blends using Canadian Sphagnum peat moss, perlite, vermiculite and coir. Sun Gro Natural & Organic professional mixes provide the same attributes found in the standard mixes. Peat, perlite, bark, dolomitic lime and an organic wetting agent, result in the same air and water capacity, pH and wettability as the standard mixes – to help ease the transition to organic growing.

10 | BWI Companies, Inc. APRIL 2018 | bwicompanies.com

The issue most growers face after selecting the N&O growing media that they will be using is determining the best fertility regimen. Fertilization of plants produced organically can be challenging. There is a limited number of organic fertilizers available, the ratio of nutrients is often not ideal for plant growth, and the availability of a full micronutrient package can be very limited. Most of the organic fertilizers become plant available through biological decomposition via microbial activity. Fortunately, organic fertilizers in growing media often have viable microbial communities available to aid in conversion of nutrients to plant available forms. Because organic fertility is regulated by microbial activity, temperature and moisture play a huge role. Warmer temperatures increase activity, while cooler temperature can limit activity. University research has shown that composts can introduce an increase in water and nutrient holding abilities as well as additional microbial communities to growing media. Vermicompost is defined as the stable end-product of the decomposition of organic materials by earth worms and microorganisms. It is nutrient rich and biologically active. The addition of vermicompost to a growing medium can be very beneficial, because of the readily available nutrients, as well as a flourishing microbial community. Greenhouse crops will particularly benefit from the addition of vermicompost as a nutrient resource. Nutrients can be utilized by the crop at the start. For long term crops, additional fertilizers will need to be utilized but the microbial community inoculated into the mix by the vermicompost helps with the breakdown of many organic fertilizers. Our high quality products are a benefit to the professional grower. Understanding how to best use these products is key to a successful crop. Growers have many things to manage during a season, such as timing, pests, disease prevention, and nutrition. The mix should not increase their work but rather create a beneficial starting point for success.

Perennial Nutsedge and Kyllinga Management in Turfgrass and Nursery Production

Description According to the Weed Science Society of America, these weeds have been categorized as two of the world’s worst weeds. These weeds are difficult to control in turfgrass and in field grown nursery production. In nursery production (weed growth can significantly diminish your crop growth.) Yellow (Cyperus esculentus) and purple (Cyperus rotundus) nutsedge reproduce primarily by tubers sometimes referred to as nutlets. They do produce seed, but often nutsedge seedlings do not survive due to turfgrass competition. Nutsedge can be spread from one location to another by planting infested sod or spreading soil containing viable tubers. Emergence will vary depending on geographic location and soil type. Generally, these weeds can emerge as early as April and thrive throughout the summer months into fall.

Identification To distinguish between yellow & purple nutsedge newly produced leaves have a different leaf tip shape. Purple nutsedge (top right) will have a blunt leaf tip where yellow nutsedge (bottom left) will have a more tapered leaf tip. Purple nutsedge has dark brown to black tubers produced in chains. Yellow nutsedge has tan to light brown colored tubers not produced in chains. One of the easiest ways to distinguish yellow from purple nutsedge is the color of the seed head. Yellow nutsedge has golden colored seed heads arranged in a cluster of spikelets. Purple nutsedge produces maroon to purple seed heads arranged similarly.

Management For nutsedge and kyllinga control in turfgrass Dismiss®NXT offers a new solution for effective control. Dismiss®NXT is a novel combination of sulfentrazone and carfentrazone, two highly effective herbicides discovered by FMC providing overall selective postemergence control. Dismiss®NXT provides improved tuber mortality reducing future sedge populations. When using Dismiss®NXT, there are strategies to optimize control: 1) Application Timing – Research has demonstrated yellow nutsedge can be more effectively controlled by late June/early July applications compared to applications later in summer. Yellow nutsedge begins new tuber development during an 8 to 10 hr photoperiod. Targeting applications prior to new tuber development may prevent formation of new tubers. 2) Soil and Foliar Contact – It has been documented that Dismiss has a much greater impact on both purple and yellow nutsedge when the herbicide is absorbed via the roots and foliage. Ensuring both soil and foliar absorption would also benefit in kyllinga management. Adequate soil moisture is important for root absorption. If applications need to be made under dry conditions, it may be beneficial to irrigate prior to the application. 3) Application Technique – As nutsedge and kyllinga are most often growing in patches, spot applications are made more so than broadcast applications. In these situations, it is important to apply the herbicide evenly across these patches moving from one direction to the next (i.e. left to right). If using a backpack sprayer, a flat fan nozzle would be the preferred nozzle type. In some cases, applicators make more than one swath, or apply in circular pattern over the target area. However, these application techniques may result in 2x or greater application rate. When this occurs, the risk of turfgrass injury increases. For nutsedge control in nursery production Dismiss Herbicide offers fast control in containers, around field-grown ornamentals, or in landscape beds. Dismiss Herbicide is applied as a directed spray toward the base of the plant. Do not spray over-thetop of ornamental foliage. Dismiss Herbicide is most effective when applied to soil free of clods and debris such as leaves or mulch. Optimum control is achieved when applications are applied during the early growth stages of nutsedge.

2017 saw the departure of The Original Muck Boot brand of footwear from BWI’s offering after 15 plus years of helping build it to national recognition. With 2018, we now represent the Bogs brand of footwear to our customer base. When looking for and choosing a new brand, we sought a strong partner eager to grow and expand their business and who’s footwear was a quality product that BWI would be proud to offer to our customers. We believe we have found all those things and more with Bogs! Not just content to offer comfortable, 100% waterproof footwear to their customers, Bogs is constantly innovating and seeking new ways to service the end user. After years of research and development, they devised a process to inject rubber material during construction, rather than rely solely on the same vulcanization process the industry has used for years. This groundbreaking process results in a seamless boot without the overlapping layers of rubber necessary to build a boot through vulcanization. This innovation

is immediately apparent when a customer picks up the boot. The styles featuring the seamless technology weigh 30% less than comparable styles made through vulcanization. They are also much more durable than a vulcanized build. Seamless styles were flex-tested 2.9 MILLION times or the equivalent to walking 1400 miles before any wear issues arose! In addition to being durable, they are also very comfortable. Numerous existing, plus all new styles will feature Bogs’ patented Rebound material. This responsive cushioning layer returns energy with a lifetime of performance and blocks out cold. During impact testing, the material had a 56% responsive return, giving you a ‘spring’ in every step! BWI is offering a yearlong warehouse program on the most popular styles as well as a booking program on all styles. Look for special offers in late spring as we launch this brand! CONTAINER GARDENING MATT HARRIS OF VEGEPOD

G

rowing vegetables in containers is easily the most productive and simple way to grow vegetables. Soil contamination, soil quality, protection of soil, convenience of planting and water saving are challenges and vital aspects of the gardening process. Let’s discuss how these issues play a part in traditional gardens and how container gardening can be the solution. When using a traditional garden, the first thing to consider is the possibility of soil contamination. Prominent levels of mercury and lead are often found in soil around high density areas like cities, as well as remnants from past industries and garbage. The use of paints, chemicals, plastics and rubbers from previous generations can leave toxins in the soil for decades and growing vegetables in these areas is not recommended. Containers are the only guaranteed way to provide a barrier for the plant’s roots from these possible contaminants. Good soil quality is vital in the gardening process. Growing vegetables in the ground can be an exhaustive process, as conditioning the soil requires a lot of time and effort. The top existing layer of weeds and grass must be removed and then the soil must be turned. If it is sandy or clay bound, then further manures must be added such as compost and fertilizers. This can be a process that takes up to 12 months. This process has now been simplified – a bag of potting mix. Buy a bag of quality potting mix from the local garden center and fill the container. This allows the ability to plant right away knowing it is a safe medium to grow healthy veggies to consume. Soil must be protected. Nearby trees and bushes are continually hunting for food. They can sniff out conditioned soil in a new veggie patch the day it is created. They will send their wicked roots right under your patch and devour the nutrients as fast as they are added. Unless of course, the veggies are grown in a container.

ADDING BACKYARD POULTRY SUPPLIES TO YOUR STORE’S LINEUP

BY TARA NETZER OF MILLER MFG

Backyard chickens are becoming more popular than ever, and with many urban areas relaxing their regulations on owning poultry within city limits, interest in backyard chickens has really taken off. Chickens are great additions to any backyard, urban or rural, due to their egg laying capabilities, providing natural pest control, composting and creating fertilizer for a yard or garden. And owners generally report that they enjoy the personalities of their feathered friends, and view their flock as pets and backyard companions. Over the past few years, the backyard poultry movement has really grown among city dwellers, largely in part to a growing interest in locally sourced food and knowing where the food on their dinner table comes from. Many consumers feel that raising their own eggs or meat is a healthier, safer option than store-bought, and a better, more humane and eco-friendly alternative to food from commercial farming operations. A large number of major US cities now allow backyard hens, and it’s predicted that we will see a dramatic increase in backyard flocks over the next 5 years. This means whether your store is urban or rural,

or somewhere in between, you are likely to see an increased demand for poultry care products like feeders, waterers, incubators and nesting products. WHO IS KEEPING CHICKENS Demographics1 • 65% live in rural areas • 53% are age 45 or older • 68% are female • 42% are employed full time • 50% have graduated from college or post-graduate studies • 4.3% of all homes with chickens in a study of 4 major US cities were on 1 acre or more • 0.8% of all homes in these cities had less than 1 acre • 28% have a household income of less than $49,000 • 16% have an income greater than $100,000 WHY PEOPLE KEEP CHICKENS An online survey2 of backyard chicken owners was conducted, and the surveys received came almost equally from urban, suburban, and rural areas. Most (71%) respondents owned fewer than 10 chickens and had kept chickens for less than 5 years (70%). Major reasons for keeping chickens were: • As food for home use (95%) • Gardening partners (63%) • Pets (57%) or a combination of these Rural respondents had larger flocks and were more likely to keep chickens as a source of income or for show than urban and suburban respondents.

30 | BWI Companies, Inc. APRIL 2018 | bwicompanies.com

Owners thought that eggs/meat from their chickens were: • • • •

More nutritious (86%) Safer to consume (84%) Tasted better (95%) than store-bought products The health and welfare of their chickens was better (95%) than on commercial farms

According to this same survey, the respondents cited that the internet was the main source of information (87%), followed by books/magazines (62%) and feed stores (40%). While it’s tough to beat the internet, people are still looking for personalized advice from knowledgeable staff at their local feed or farm store. HOW THE MARKET IS GROWING A USDA study of four major US cities3 (Denver, Los Angeles, Miami, New York) reported that 4% of households without chickens said they planned on purchasing chickens within the next five years. And 4 out of 10 respondents felt they would be in favor of allowing chickens in their neighborhoods. The majority of the respondents who were in favor of backyard flocks were either under 25 (61%), or between 25-34 (55%) years old. More and more consumers are beginning to embrace the all-natural, health-conscious, organic movement and backyard poultry is a large part of that lifestyle. Current chicken owners are continuing to embrace this lifestyle and both groups, new chicken owners and current are looking to their local stores for support. 66% of poultry owners typically buy from a local independent feed dealer. IMPACT The average startup cost for chickens is $900, and the annual spending on feeding and caring for chickens is around $577, with those living in rural areas tending to spend more than their urban/suburban counterparts. CATEGORIES Common items required for keeping chickens: • Feed • Bedding • Housing, like a coop • Feeders • Waterers • Nesting boxes • Heater bases to keep water from freezing in the winter • Housing/brooder and heat lamp for chicks • Vitamins/supplements Sources: 1. BWI Atlanta

Early in November, BWI opened it’s newest small branch in Norcross, Georgia which is a suburb of Atlanta. Dozens of vendors and potential customers dropped by the new location during their two-day Grand Opening. Customers enjoyed seeing the facilities and speaking to sales personnel about the endless line of products that will be sources from the branch. Everyone was excited about the showroom that offers an onsite, processing point for local traffic. The staff treated guests to a lunch of burgers, hot dogs and barbeque sandwiches on the floor of the new warehouse. Bryan Whiffen, BWE Division Manager, shared his thoughts on starting the new branch, “The greater Atlanta area is an ideal market for BWI’s Twig concept, and our Norcross location is nicely situated in one of the hottest growth markets in Atlanta. Every Pest Control Operator and Lawn Care/Turf Operator company has either a physical presence here or is servicing customers daily in this region.” Whiffen continued, “Nearly all of our competitors in Atlanta have multiple locations in the metro area. We feel very strongly that there are additional BWI locations in Atlanta’s future.” The future is bright for BWI operations in the East!

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 27 Convenience plays a significant role in gardening. Filling a container garden is relatively simple and cost effective, just add potting mix. Pots, planters and tubs are easily positioned, and can just as easily be moved. Chase the sun, avoid the cold, keep out of the wind… now that is convenient. Container gardens can easily be raised, that means no more bending over. Containers can also attract heat in colder climates which warms the soil and increases growth rates considerably. Lastly, there is complete control over the soil in a container garden, feed the plants the nutrients you want. For example: more nitrogen can be added to make leafier greens or in comparison to having to test soil before planting, simply purchase certified organic potting mix and seeds and truly organic veggies can be grown. Saving water means saving money. Watering traditional garden beds can be an expensive task, not to mention timeconsuming. Using pots and planters gives the ability to capture run-off and re-use water via saucers or self-watering pots. Potting mix is designed to drain freely. If 1 gallon of water is poured on a planter, 80% of that water should drain away. This is what makes potting soil so good – it allows the plant’s roots to breath. Yes, roots need air also. Excessive watering can take the nutrients right out of potting mix so using self-watering pots can help in eliminating this. Self-watering pots capture any excess water which is full of nutrients and feed it back to the plant’s roots. It is best if a wicking system is utilized, as this is the most efficient way. Ultimately, traditional gardening has several challenges that are costly and tedious, all challenges that can be avoided! Growing vegetables in pots and planters is the easiest, most convenient and most effective way to grow.
