Your Chores. Our Passion. By: Ashley Gardner

C

Located in Frisco, Texas, Chorbie is a one-stop-shop for mowing, lawn care, landscaping, pest and termite control, and other home maintenance services. It’s a company that aims to take curb appeal to the next level by delivering a quality service with competitive pricing.

horbie is the epitome of a grassroots company. In 2006, EJ McCoy, Chorbie’s co-owner, started mowing lawns under the name Emerald Lawn Care. A few years later, he rebranded the company to Weed Xtinguishers to set his company apart from other generically-named companies. As Weed Xtinguishers, he continued adding to his service offering to include sprinkler repair, bush and flower bed maintenance, pest control, fertilization, weed control, mulch and sod installation, landscaping, Christmas light installation, and more. In 2019, EJ formed Chorbie to expand his vision beyond lawn care and pest control. This new company reflects the evolution of the Weed Xtinguishers business model and provides home services with trust,

6 | APRIL 2020

quality, reliability, and convenience. Chorbie is poised to do what Weed Xtinguishers could not, capture the attention of people looking for a one-stop-shop home maintenance solution. More than a lawn company, Chorbie has expanded even further to care for more of its customers’ home care needs including junk removal, windowwashing, gutter-cleaning, fence repair, and other handyman type services. “There’s a huge market for it,” McCoy said. “Customers want an all-in-one company. They want experts and they want to deal with as few companies as possible. It’s all about convenience and that’s what we’re working to provide.” The name ‘Chorbie’ (a combination of ‘chore’ and ‘hobby’) originates from the idea that what one person sees as a chore, another person sees as a hobby. That’s where the passion comes in. Your chores. Our passion.

BWI CUSTOMER PROFILE

“We wanted a name where we could do literally almost any home service under it, whether that was installing audio and video systems for a home movie theater, a home security system, or lawn care. We wanted it to be something unique that wouldn’t be confused with any other business. My business partner helped come up with the name and in June of 2019 we became an entirely new company - Chorbie,” McCoy said. The business model may have changed but McCoy and Chorbie’s commitment to excellence and topnotch customer services remains the same. He knows those qualities will set his company apart from the competition. He plans to continue building on the trust already established with clients.

His three to five-year business plan focuses on another big expansion into general contracting and home repairs. “Imagine having one company that you know and trust. They are already making sure your yard is getting mowed every week. We’re taking care of fertilization, weed control, and pest control. If that customer is looking for someone to do a bathroom remodel or other home improvements, we already have that connection with them. The idea would be that we’d have skilled workers to do that kind of work,” McCoy said. “We’re looking at our client relationship as something that we want to be long-term. We want to mow your yard every week as long as you live on that property. When you

need a remodel, when your heating and air goes out, we want to be the company you call,” he said. McCoy understands the importance of customer satisfaction. “Reviews are incredibly important and so is client satisfaction. Sometimes it’s hard for people to know who to trust. That relationship is a big part of what we’re trying to do,” McCoy said. “Client experience is what we talk about most. That’s what’s been key to our success. That’s what differentiates us. We are continuing to grow these relationships and make sure our clients know they come first with us. Chorbie delivers with quality service at competitive pricing. Adding value to every project with the customer’s convenience and comfort in mind is what puts us ahead of the pack. Our

8 | APRIL 2020

commitment to quality is second to none.” Where Chorbie is at now and where it’s headed is a long way from where McCoy got his start mowing yards for extra money as a young man. “The passion for this company is something that grew on me over about 20 years. I’m 35 so I’m fairly young. I started out pushing lawnmowers and mowing lawns in high school and even younger. There was a time in my life I tried to get away from it because I don’t particularly enjoy pushing lawnmowers but it’s what I was good at. In the last three to five years, I’ve grown to love it and to have a vision for Chorbie,” he said. Chorbie now boasts approximately 30 full-time employees and an army of sub-contractors to meet the needs of homeowners in the Dallas Metroplex.

BASF #MonarchChallenge has another year of success 20,000 milkweed seedlings were shipped across the country in 2019

T

he BASF Living Acres Monarch Challenge has completed another successful year. In 2019, 20,000 milkweed seedlings were shipped to farmers and golf courses across the Midwest who were passionate about preserving monarch populations.

farmers’ perceptions of milkweed have shifted,” said Chip Shilling, BASF Sustainability Strategy Manager, Agricultural Products, North America. “Milkweed has been known as a problem weed for generations, but throughout the last few years, farmers are beginning to understand milkweed can thrive in non-productive areas of farmland.”

Milkweed is the essential plant for the monarch butterfly life cycle and the sole food source for the monarch caterpillar. It has become less common over the years, which is why the BASF Monarch Challenge encourages the planting of milkweed in non-crop areas of farm land and out-of-play areas of golf courses.

With the support of many this year, the challenge successfully garnered more than 2,500 farmers, farm families and others interested in monarch conservation, and led to partnerships with more than 56 golf courses.

Since its start nearly four years ago, the Monarch Challenge has flourished, with increasing support from across the agriculture and golf course industries. Farmers, farm families and golf courses have been enthusiastic about stepping up and getting involved in the program. “Last year, we visited a number of events across the U.S. and learned firsthand how many

12 | APRIL 2020

“Every critter is a beneficial critter, is the way I see it,” said Andy Herring, a North Carolina farmer who has participated in the Monarch Challenge for several years. “I think what we’ve been doing with milkweed is going to help in some way.” Terry Hills Golf Course, located in upstate New York, took the Monarch Challenge two years ago, and since then the milkweed has flourished. “It has especially flourished within our community,” said Thad Thompson, Superintendent at Terry

Hills. “People will stop in to look at the habitat. They’re excited to see a golf course giving back to their community by doing something positive for the environment.” The Monarch Challenge first spread its wings in 2016 as part of the BASF Living Acres biodiversity program. Since taking flight, over 6,500 participants have signed up for the Monarch Challenge, and 65,500 milkweed plants have been established on farmlands and golf courses from Rhode Island to Idaho. BASF Living Acres has put years into preserving and reestablishing milkweed habitats, and it has become greatly rewarding as more and more people become interested in aiding monarch populations.

to ensure we are helping farmers and golf courses leave a sustainable operation for future generations.” To learn more about Living Acres and the Monarch Challenge, visit MonarchChallenge.com. Follow #MonarchChallenge on Social Media to see what participants already achieved.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) has been tasked with determining whether the monarch butterfly warrants Endangered Species Act (ESA) protection. Since the deadline for that decision is December 15, 2020, it is important that the Monarch Challenge continues to spread as many milkweed seedlings as possible throughout the country next year. “No matter the decision, we will continue to educate and grow our program in aiding monarch butterflies and other pollinators,” said Shilling. “All the measures we take are

Build a Grazing Plan to Balance Forage Supply, Livestock Demand By Jesse Bussard Sponsored by Gallagher

T

here is more to grazing than just turning cows out to pasture. The forage resource and the livestock grazing it are part of a much larger, more complex system and must be managed as such. grazing plan, according to specialist Jim Gerrish, offers A producers an organized approach to managing the system of soil, plant, animal, and human resources available to the farm or ranch. Gerrish, who manages a grazing operation in the Pahsimeroi Valley of north central Idaho, has been involved in grazing practices, research, and consulting since 1980. The reason for a grazing plan says Gerrish is because, “Grass does not grow at the same rate every day of the year, nor does animal consumption rate stay the same. If you don’t have a plan for where you are going, it is very hard to bring that supply and demand into balance.” Imbalance leads to inefficiency building into the rest of the system and unnecessary economical and emotional stresses for producers. To balance supply and demand grazing managers must use a variable stocking rate throughout the year (i.e. don’t have the same number of animals on the place month after month). “An increase in costs and decrease in income is very often the outcome of not having a grazing plan,” says Gerrish. The benefits of implementing a grazing plan include increasing the total number of stock days harvested per acre annually and improved grazing efficiency thanks to having animal demand matched to the available forage supply. In addition, Gerrish notes drought and destocking plans, both vital components of a grazing plan, helps manager proactively plan and be better equipped to deal with drought when it does finally occur. “Most farmers and ranchers are well into the drought before they figure out, ‘Man, I’ve got to sell some cattle,” says Gerrish. “If you have a plan, you would already be

16 | APRIL 2020

“An increase in costs and decrease in income is very often the outcome of not having a grazing plan.” reducing the stocking numbers before your neighbors even realize there is a drought coming.” While most producers may think they have a grazing plan, in Gerrish’s experience for the majority it is merely a mental note. To implement a grazing plan properly, organization is essential. He recommends producers write things down and do their research ahead of time. “The first thing I try to do is get an assessment of what the potential carrying capacity of the property is,” says Gerrish. To do this, Gerrish uses Web Soil Survey (WSS). WSS provides soil data and information produced by the National Cooperative Soil Survey and currently lists surveys for 95% of U.S. counties. Canadians should consult the Canadian Soil Information Service for soil data in their country. Soil surveys allow for potential productivity and carrying capacity to be calculated. Along with soil surveys, historical weather and rainfall data for the area to be grazed should be reviewed. This information combined with the soil survey, will assist in determining what months of the year forage will be growing, when peaks and declines in production will occur, and when the chief dormant season is. “We know that we are going to produce forage in a limited period of time, but we are going to try to stretch it over 12 months ideally,” says Gerrish. Figuring out carrying capacity for what the forage production is going to be allows grazing managers to understand when there will be abundance and deficits of feed. Next, Gerrish says producers need to look

at their stock policy or stock flow, defined as the class of animals and number of animals on the farm or ranch on a monthby-month basis. The goal is to fit the animal demand of the stock policy to what the forage production will be.

Whether you have 30 acres and 2 milk cows, 16 sheep and 5 beefs you are finishing or are running cattle on half a million acres, Gerrish believes every farm and ranch should have a grazing plan in place.

It is important to note all of these calculations are based on average conditions. To plan for the possibility of below-average conditions, a drought plan should be incorporated into the grazing plan.

“No operation is too small or too big,” says Gerrish. “It makes life so much less complicated when you have a plan.”

Resources: Soil data can be found via the U.S. Web Soil Survey (http://websoilsurvey.sc.egov.usda. gov/App/HomePage.htm) and the Canadian “In a drought plan we are looking at Soil Information Service (http://sis.agr. probability of receiving precipitation and gc.ca/cansis/).

trigger dates,” says Gerrish. “So if you have NOAA Climate Data Online for historical not received this percentage of the normal weather info: https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/ precipitation by this date you have to do cdo-web/ something and that is usually reducing animal numbers.” Gerrish encourages grazing managers to incorporate flexibility into their stock policy by grazing different classes and/or species of livestock. The objective is to have the flexibility and ability to increase stocking numbers to capture available forage when it is on hand and liquidate or not even start an enterprise when forage is not available. Grazing plans will differ across regions. In the West, a big part of the grazing plan becomes the drought management plan. In the East, however, Gerrish points out, while you still need a drought contingency index, the percent of forage resources held in reserve need not be as great due to higher rainfall and a more forgiving landscape. In addition, Eastern producers can get away with less flexibility in their stock policy thanks to more market opportunities. For those new to grazing planning, Gerrish gives the following advice: “Have a good understanding of what your land is capable of producing and when it is likely to be available.” APRIL 2020 | 17

Granular Herbicide Rotation and Management Program By David Barcel, Sr. Technical Manager of OHP, Inc.

A

n effective rotational program is the key to the successful use of pre-emergent herbicides. Other factors to consider are the herbicide product selected to treat the target weeds, the application rate and timing of application, proper calibration, the crop to be treated, environmental conditions, and watering practices. There is not one herbicide that will control ALL weeds. All herbicide specimen labels contain a list of weeds controlled. Some are better on grassy weeds, others on broadleaves, and some are good on both weed types. Herbicide rotation may not be as important for container growers as a result of the treated container soil being exchanged out for new crop plantings and soil. Field grown ornamentals often use sprayable herbicides such as glyphosate based products. The sprayable herbicides have shown good potential for resistance due in part to repeated use and over time can lose efficacy. The table below gives examples of sprayable pre-emergent herbicides, their active ingredients and respective modes of action, and the weeds they control. This is helpful when considering herbicide products for your weed control program.

Below are examples of rotational programs with granular pre-emergent herbicides for either field-grown or container grown ornamentals. The goal is to change the Modes of Action (MOA) from time to time. One challenge with MOA group 3 is that the products in this group are used extensively for grassy weed control and there are few other options. In order for a weed control program to work successfully, your crops need to start out weed free. Dr. Charles Gilliam, Auburn University, had a great saying regarding this approach which was, “Start Clean and Stay Clean.” Application of burn-down herbicides is one way to start clean. Soap based herbicides containing various types of Pelargonic acids are known for very fast knock-down. On a warm sunny day you will see activity in 30 minutes or less. Products such as FireWorxx™, Scythe, Axxe etc. can be used around containers, under benches, walkways, perimeters, etc. and will eliminate existing weeds. Use a burn-down herbicide before the weeds go to seed. For container use, a thorough hand weeding prior to herbicide application will help product performance. Good weed control means starting clean to stay clean. Below is a table suggesting some common pre-emergent herbicides for use on either softer ornamentals such as perennials or ornamental grasses or use on woody ornamentals. These products typically have a 2 to 3 month residual profile, which means a grower could apply products up to 3 times a year. Below are several options on starting a herbicide program.

Growers generally use granular herbicides to cover large container areas or where plants are not tolerant to liquid sprays. While all granules may be different in particle size or rates per acre, their application methods are the same. Usually they are applied using hand or powered rotary spreaders or larger air-assisted boom spreaders. Whatever method you choose, it is very important to calibrate your equipment to deliver the proper dose, usually 100-200 lbs. per acre. Dr. Chris Marble, UFL, found in a study of 6 nurseries applying a granular herbicide at 200 lbs./ac. that only a few were close to applying the correct rate. The others were mostly under the recommended rate per acre and one nursery was significantly over.

OHP Calibration Pan

Most herbicide manufacturers offer a plastic calibration pan specific to their product. To calibrate, place several of the calibration pans on the ground. The user makes an application pass over the pans and the granules collect in the pan. OHP has a new style of calibration pan, gold in color. This pan is one-half sq. ft. in size and has a collection site in one corner. By tipping the pan towards the corner and filling the collection well, the user will see how much material fills the clear window and corresponding fill-line markers. The applicator compares the result and adjusts speed or flow settings to apply the correct dose of product. Many calibration pans have corner dimples premeasured for the correct dosage. If the granules fail to fill the dimple or over-fill the dimple, then the applicator must change his pace or adjust the spreader setting. Repeat this calibration process until the proper dose is achieved.

OHP Granular Herbicide Pan Calibration Chart The first step to calibrate for any OHP herbicide is to determine the rate required (lbs./A), located in the left hand

BWI CUSTOMER PROFILE

LUKAS NURSERY By Ashley Gardner

T

he Lukas family has been farming the fertile land in the heart of Florida for four generations. The result of their efforts is Lukas Nursery, a bustling family garden center that carries anything and everything that will grow in their region from basic plants to exotic flowers. Their property is also home to a 4,000 square-foot butterfly conservatory called the Butterfly Encounter, an exhibit that features all of the state’s native butterflies. “We are a retail family garden center,” said Cecelia Lukas, who handles accounts payable and receivable and ordering for the family business. “We’ve been farming the same land for over 100 years. Our great grandmother and great grandfather came from Cleveland, Ohio. They pioneered this area where we’re at.” The Lukas family evolution as farmers started simply. “When our ancestors came down, they made a humble living through agriculture.

32 | APRIL 2020

They started out growing crops like celery. As things changed they went from row crops to ornamentals, trees, shrubs, and palms,” said Caleb Lukas, bookkeeper for Lukas Nursery. “We do have a sense of pride about it. It’s not like we’ve just moved along with the winds of time. We’ve been able to stand steadfast in the same location and maintain those agriculture roots and values.” In typical fashion for a family-run business, Caleb and Cecelia pitched in from a very young age. They were put to work in the nursery shortly after they started walking. “Often time we get asked when we started working here at the nursery. We laugh and scratch our heads because we don’t really know how old we were. It was when we were old enough to start pulling weeds,” Caleb said with a laugh. “We literally learned from the ground up. Our family members planted us as little seeds, and now we’ve sprouted and

grown to become the tree and keep the business going.” That connection with their business has helped Lukas Nursery fight off the competition from big box stores that are located within a mile or two of them. “We’ve been able to stand the test of time from those challenges. A big reason why is due to customer satisfaction,” Caleb said. The customer experience is a focus for the Lukas family and their employees. They provide clients with a wealth of knowledge about the plants and products they sell. “One of the things we hold ourselves accountable for is customer experience. We strive to provide them with expertise. People may not know anything about plants or gardening products but when they come here they know they are going to get

certified horticultural professionals to assist them,” Caleb said. It also doesn’t hurt that Lukas Nursery is the kind of place where people will stop by for a visit just to take in the scenery and stroll among the plants and the natural setting. Some customers have stated their nursery is “better than Disney.” While Lukas Nursery’s focus is on the products they sell, they do offer something for tourists as well. The Butterfly Encounter has turned into quite an attraction for the family business. The exhibit opened in 2004 and now sees approximately 20,000 visitors annually. It’s a beloved destination for local school field trips. “It’s very popular. We have a bunch of school tours come through. The peak season for school tours is March through May. Just about every day during that time we have buses coming in with lots of children,” Cecelia said. “There are more than 20 types of butterflies but they all

have different peak seasons so we don’t necessarily have that many types flying around at one time.” The Butterfly Encounter is more than an attraction. It has been a way for the Lukas family to get people thinking about ways they could positively impact the environment. “The Butterfly Encounter came about as an idea to bring nature back to the fingertips of locals. It was a big effort of ours to bring conservation back into people’s minds. We wanted to show people with houses living in neighborhoods that they can still give back to nature by planting a butterfly garden or a pollinated garden of any

kind,” Caleb said. “It helps us sell a lot of neat plants and give back to the environment.” Beehives have found a home on the Lukas land as well. They have a beekeeper who works with the bees and they’ve now had two successful harvests of honey. “Both times we sold out in one day. It was a hit. We have such a vast source of nectar plants from citrus trees to different perennials that it creates a tasty honey,” Cecelia said. Customers can see more wildlife than butterflies at the nursery. They also have farm animals including cows, donkeys, and chickens.

“A lot of families will come and visit just to see the animals as well,” Cecelia said. “We live in a populated area so kids don’t get the opportunity to get up close to animals very often. This area used to be mainly agriculture but over time it’s grown up into a lot of neighborhoods.” Lukas Nursery has been around for a century and they plan to continue for many more by staying innovative and continuing to give people a multitude of reasons to come by the nursery. “Every year we try and have something new and exciting for our customers to come back and see us for,” Cecelia said.

The BWI Kansas City branch held its Grand Opening on May 23, 2019. It is located at 11010 Strang Line Road in Lenexa, Kansas. This new branch has a large showroom, including an area for customers to browse and large enough to hold CEU classes. The BWI Kansas City branch primarily services the pest control, landscape and lawn care markets but also stocks products for turf and erosion control. Branch Manager Chad Bridgman is ready to assist you with all your pest and lawn care needs. The BWI Nashville branch held its Grand Opening on September 10, 2019. A large crowd of BWI customers, BWI employees, and manufacturers were in attendance. 36 | APRIL 2020

The LaVergne Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon-cutting, and afterward everyone toured the 9,000 sq ft facility. The BWI Nashville branch is located at 1044 Firestone Parkway in LaVergne, TN. Please stop by and visit with Riley Marshall, Branch Manager, and Darryl Head, Customer Service, for all your pest, landscape, and lawn care needs. The BWI Greenville division completed the expansion to its warehouse in December 2019. This much needed additional 14,500 sq ft added 1,214 NEW pallet positions of product to better service our customers. Warehouse Manager Jeff Frix has really appreciated the extra space and can operate more

productively with this additional space. The BWI Atlanta branch, located at 4615 S. Old Peachtree Rd. in Norcross, Georgia, also acquired an additional 10,000 sq ft of warehouse space. Branch Manager Lee Williamson would be happy to show you the warehouse and help with any questions you might have. 2020 started with a bang as BWI’s inventory hit a record high. With space already tight at most locations, we had to rethink our warehouse space. Ronnie Mitchell, Corporate Warehouse Operations and Safety Manager, worked with several BWI locations on how to handle their increased inventory.

BWI Nashville Ribbon Cutting - September 2019

The BWI Meridian division added 188 additional pallet positions by going higher and by adjusting the current racking to handle more product. The BWI Dallas division completed a re-rack of its fertilizer room by using four pallets deep pushback racking and adding another 296 pallet positions. The BWI Springfield division is changing out some older drive-in racking and going higher 32 feet. They are adding 270 pallet positions of 5 deep pushback racking and 348 pallet spaces of 3 deep pushback racking. The BWI Schulenburg division is updating a portion of their warehouse racking and adding new 3 deep pushback racking thus gaining 220 pallet spaces.

Ant Baiting Tips

A

s spring approaches the number one pest for Pest Management Professionals begin to awaken from their winter diapause. Let’s take a tactical approach and discuss the fundamentals of successful ant baiting as part of an ant management program. Bait formulations have clearly demonstrated value to Pest Management Professionals (PMPs) not solely from the efficacy they deliver, but by also meeting requirements of a changing marketplace of political and regulatory trends. While understanding the social behavior and complex structure of ant colonies, PMPs can realize that bait formulations can significantly contribute to colony elimination. By definition, baits combine an active ingredient with an attractive food source. Natural foraging behavior provides a ‘window of opportunity’ for a PMP to provide invading ants a resource that will be collected and purposefully returned and shared with colony mates. The result is forcing the ants to deliver the controlling insecticide themselves. However, field experience has taught us that making ants harvest a bait, in sufficient quantities to reach the critical colony members (queens and brood), is not as easy as it seems. Ants have specific biological requirements that dictate what and when different types of foods are collected. As discussed last year, ant specie identification is the fundamental first step in management. Feeding preferences and foraging behaviors

should be researched for the local species challenging PMPs. These behaviors must be considered when choosing a bait. An effective active ingredient will not perform if the bait matrix (food/water/attractants) does not match the foraging needs of the colony. Additionally, PMPs will want to consider the current weather trends. Ants are constantly under ‘water-stress’ and forage actively for water. Liquid and syrup baits will be especially attractive during periods of drought and extreme heat.

IN GENERAL • Solid Baits: Granules and stations usually provide a mixed source of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. The protein component in these formulations is attractive during periods of egg and brood development—typically in the spring and again in late summer or early autumn. Bait stations serve as excellent maintenance baits. • Liquids/Gels/Syrups: These baits provide water, an essential resource to ants. Additionally, these forms are typically ‘sweet’ baits, providing the energy-rich carbohydrates that mimic the natural sugars collected from honeydew-producing insects like aphids and scale.

Additionally, as outdoor insecticide application regulations tighten, consider the contribution ant baiting can provide to your perimeter service model.

CONSIDER THESE TIPS • ‘Intercept’ tramp ants before they become a visible nuisance inside (i.e. call-back). Bait at points of entry outside, and manage activity outside the structure. • Bait around natural resource sites: food (garbage areas, plantings supporting honeydew producing insects, pet feeding areas); water (natural drainage sites, plumbing penetrations, air conditioning condensers); shelter (shaded ground cover, wood piles, leaf litter accumulation). • Bait along foraging trails. • Bait as close as possible to nesting sites. With a little homework and planning, PMPs will experience a very effective baiting program, in which the ants will assist in achieving results. This was first published in Pest Management Professional Magazine.

Understanding the foraging behaviors or preferences of the target species will help when matching the right bait type at the right time.
