Instant Results for Looking Beautiful & Finding Your Glow
E
ver since I was a little girl, I could remember sitting there watching my mother put her makeup on before work. She was a morning person, always singing, smiling, and hugging all over me. I remember, thinking how beautiful she looked, and how much she loved her products! Porcelain skin, and bold green eyes, with long lashes that were breathtaking! I always had a fascination with makeup, most importantly her makeup! Her cosmetic bag filled to the top with Lancôme, Chanel, and also Avon products. I could not wait to get my little hands in it. I am 41 now, and my hands have been in it for 24 years, doing what I love most “Makeup Artistry.” My mother was my inspiration, and the journey began with her beautiful face, and now my goal is to touch and inspire all women. We live in a very busy world, where at times we get lost in the shuffle. As women we take care of everyone around us. Our children and families come first, juggling careers, and never feeling as though we have enough time. It is difficult to find balance and more so challenging to feel beautiful. I want to change this, and I want women to feel the beauty they have possessed all along. Makeup can change the way you look and feel. You would not believe how a few simple products can deeply make positive changes in your life. You can change the way you see yourself, and also change the way the world sees you. So, do you need a pick me up? Are you the woman that wears too many hats, and can’t seem to find the one that sparkles? You are the one that sparkles! I am here to open that door,

and to help you find the answers you need directly on the other side. Balance and happiness starts with how you feel about yourself. As makeup artist’s, we call it “The Glow.” My favorite part of this journey is the fact it will not break the bank. I am an artist, not a makeup snob. So I love products that work, not products that are in the most amazing packages and cost an arm and a leg, and do nothing for us. Why use a Chanel mascara when a L’Oreal Mascara delivers the same results or even better? You don’t need one-of-a-kind designer things to feel special. You need to realize

To me Love, Balance, and feeling beautiful are universal needs that all women share. I have been touching faces for 24 years, and I love creating looks that make women feel good about themselves. Three Women, Three Stories, One Mission Baltimore Humane Society’s Top Volunteers Interviewed and Written By: Beth Kurtz
The Baltimore Humane Society
(BHS) is an organization filled with love, compassion and dedication. They pride themselves on what they do, and for good reasons. BHS is a no-kill animal shelter that cares for animals as if they were their own. They provide foster and adoption services to pet owners, as well as, low-cost, subsidized Spay/Neuter & Pet Wellness Center, which assists in “helping to control the epidemic of pet overpopulation and serve low-income pet owners with quality pet care and vaccinations.” They have a magnificent staff, but their organization would not be what it is today, without the help of their compassionate volunteers. They provide the support that their
organization needs to truly ensure these animals safety, health and happiness, and they are invaluable to their success. I got to sit down with each of these women, and it was truthfully amazing to hear their stories.
Joanne Hohman, a Watch Officer for the Maryland Emergency Management Agency (MEMA), has spent 10 years being committed to BHS and wouldn’t have it any other way. Although she works 12 hour shifts, she still manages to find free time to volunteer at the shelter. At BHS, Joanne works as an outreach volunteer - assisting at various events and distributing flyers. Her passion for cats, also has her working and

caring for them at the shelter. Her main goal when educating pet owners is to “get them to spay and neuter their animals.” Having 5 stray cats of her own and wishing she could bring all of the animals home to care for, Joanne states that “the second best thing is volunteering at BHS.” There, she gets to enjoy spending time with the animals, and gets to work in a welcoming environment where people are really committed to the cause. Advice for those that are looking to volunteer? Joanne say to “find something you
its collaborated together and the dogs soon co-starred in the group’s performances as a way to bring attention to the homeless animals and finding them a home. As a performer herself, Kelly gets to work closely with the dogs and she says they are “fantastic.” During a show, the animals get to spend the weekend with the performer that they will be working with. It gives them a great opportunity to get out and socialize – something Kelly feels is key for these sheltered animals. The mission of the Baltimore Shakespeare Factory is to “recreate Shakespeare as it was intended to be” and using real dogs creates that feeling that is not only fun for the cast, but allows the audience to feel more connected as well.

Not long after joining the shelter, she became more involved by revamping their volunteer training program. Michelle, an advocate for BHS’ nokill shelter concept, loves the idea, but is also heartbroken to see that some of the animals become longterm residence. “It’s hard on the animals and makes the need for foster care a critical one so that they can relax in a home environment and regain their ‘manners,’” says Wendy Goldband, Director of Marketing & Public Relations. After becoming attached to a dog named Meme, who was diagnosed with terminal cancer, it was no question that Michelle, her fire fighter husband and
two children would become a foster family for Meme to live out her final days in a home – a place she never knew existed. Michelle reflected on how it felt to rescue an animal that had been through so much, including growing up in a dog fighting ring: “It’s amazing what volunteering and fostering can do to your life.” This experience has “taught me more than any human ever has and it has forever changed me. The number one thing I’ve learned is to never take anything for granted.” Being a volunteer, especial-

Q
uick, what’s the first thing that happens in your body when you hear the word “play?” Do you feel a wave of lightness, laughter, joy? Or does your body stiffen with the unspoken resistance: “Play is for children – I’ve forgotten how – and besides, there’s no time!!!” Perhaps you can feel your blood pressure rising with each protest. For far too many of us, this is the default reaction. Play is silly stuff; adults are supposed to be Serious and Busy with Important Things (sounds rather like Eeyore, doesn’t it?) But the truth is, for the first years of our childhood, how did we work at the important task of learning about the world? We stared in fascination as we wiggled our fingers and toes…crawled, then toddled, then ran after toys and pets and loving voices…discovered to our amazement that dogs and cats were furry and mud was wet and squishy and snow was cold and sugar was sweet. We discovered gravity by plopping on our round little bottoms as we learned to walk…and discovered the physics of motion as we played catch. And it was all play! “But that’s How Children Learn,” you might say. “Nobody gives a child a pile of books and Internet
references and says ‘You need to learn this by Monday.’” And you might gesture with a sigh to your bulg-

In fact, approaching life as Play is the one surefire way to prevent boredom, burnout, and depression, at work or at home.” ing briefcase, wondering how you’ll make the time to fit in practice for the company golf tournament…the opposing team is going to be tough to beat… True enough. In the Grown-Up World, business and academia take learning very seriously, and even the grown-up activities we call “play” can feel like work. But the deeper truth is that Play is not a type of activity – it’s a state of mind. In fact, approaching life as Play is the one surefire way to prevent boredom, burnout, and depression, at work or at home.
Play – It’s Not an Activity, It’s a State of Mind! By Cassandra Herbert

B WOMAN Magazine / September 2013
B PLAYFUL
The University of Cambridge defines Play as “behavior that is freely chosen, personally directed and intrinsically motivated.” That is, Play can happen when you choose to invest your own creativity, perception and motivation in any part of your life! Think about it – when do you and your coworkers most enjoy working on a project: when you’re doing it in the Same Old Way, or when your creativity is engaged at full gear, and your ideas are bouncing up against each other like balls in a pinball machine? When do you do your everyday activities at home with more enthusiasm – when they’re just (sigh) Things to Do, or when you’re introducing an element of discovery and creativity? For example… • When do you feel happier about household chores – when you’re picking up after everyone, or when you invite their creative participation in establishing a Home Team with everybody contributing their particular strength? • How do you feel when you bring a bird or plant book outside with you, lie down in the grass, and really look at the greenery and critters in your yard as amazing parts of your own backyard ecosystem, rather than as “weeds” or “pests” that need to be eradicated? • And of course – when does your sex life have more excitement and mystery: when you’re using the same old routine moves, or when you’re introducing an element of curiosity and invention: How does this feel? What happens when I try that? And what if… Far from being just “kid stuff,” Play doesn’t ever go away. It’s not supposed to; this is how both children and adults learn and grow.
Play engages creativity and makes life a magical, healing voyage of discovery: discovering ourselves, discovering each other, and discovering the world around us. Starting today, give yourself permission to play and enjoy your own uniqueness and creativity! And remember Play is not just an activity; it’s a state of mind. ■

How I Devised a Plan to get $319,200 Worth Of Debt Eliminated In 7.7 years By: Kim Johnson
How did I get here?
I’m sure you would agree that getting in debt is easy. A credit card purchase here, some student loans, car note, mortgage and you can see how quickly the debts start to pile up. Carrying debt of some sort is just a part of life for the majority of people. I’m no different. Three years ago my husband and I bought our first home and this January we refinanced. Our total debt including mortgage, credit cards, and other loans is approximately $319,200. Analyzing statistics from the Federal Reserve and other government data, they show that the average US household consumer owes an average of $15,325
20
B WOMAN Magazine / September 2013
worth of credit card debt, $147,924 in mortgage debt and $32,041 in student loan debt. That’s a total of $195,290 worth of debt. Looking at the numbers you can see that we were above average, in school, being above average is a good place but we weren’t in school we were in a lot of debt.
Sounds Good but Something Is Missing
Like most people looking for an answer I decided to see what the so called experts had to say. I read books from authors such as Suze Orman, Dave Ramsey, and T. Harv Ecker. They all gave good advice and one common suggestion was to create more income and use that to pay down debt. I got not only one part-
B FINANCIALLY SAVVY
time job but two. The result, I just spent and got deeper in debt. All these experts had their methods that aimed to get you out of debt fast. One promoted the “snowball” method, which is where you pay off the smallest debt first then take that payment and apply it to the next, thereby creating a snowball effect. The next one suggested paying the biggest debt off and yet another said to focus on the debt with the highest interest rate. Which expert was right? Which method was the best? What I later discovered was that all these methods were great start but they all were missing some very key parts.
Know the Enemy-Compound Interest
One of the most significant aspects of any debt is the expense of interest. When it comes down to debt, you need to focus mainly on controlling average daily compound interest. Why daily you ask? Because this is how the majority of home loans and other debts are calculated and this is what causes interest to accrue and work against you. The method that I use utilizes advanced banking strategies to analyze the fastest and most effective strategies to eliminate debt. In addition, you need to deposit and keep your money in an interest bearing account like a checking/savings account, personal line of credit or home equity line of credit. Personally, I have found it easy just to use my checking account. Here are some key components of this strategy that are helping me pay down $319,200 in debt in 7.7 years and saving me over $154,000 in interest. Consider these key components as you get started on your own path to becoming debt free. Look at your whole financial picture. In order to get out of debt quickly you need to look at your whole financial picture. This includes all debts, daily expenses and any discretionary income you have. Other debt methods usually only take into account one or two parts but not all the parts combined. Making an extra payment on a debt is not very effective if you are still not accounting for all financial transactions.
1
2
Keep your financial picture current.
You need to spend time every day looking at your financial picture, updating it and making adjustments as needed. Every transaction must be recorded and accounted for. You need to make sure you are staying on track and if you get off you need to re-calculate and readjust to stay on the debt free path.
3 4
Use discretionary income wisely. Discre-
tionary income is income you have left after all expenses and bills have been paid. Even its only $20, start applying it to the correct debt and you will quickly begin paying down your debt faster than you imagine.
Know the “true cost” of every potential financial transaction. “True cost” means
what an item will cost you plus what you will lose in interest saved if purchased. For example, you what to buy a new bike that costs $100. After plugging in the numbers you see that the true cost is $130. $100 for the bike plus it will “cost” you $30 in lost interest savings from your overall plan. Automate if you can. One can easily become frustrated trying to set up and maintain a plan to become debt free. Using online web-based software has been the easiest method for me. I just don’t have time, patience or discipline to sit down and work numbers. Web-based programs are easy to set up, they crunch the numbers calculate and adjust to all your transactions and finally, tell you exactly when, where and how much of your discretionary income to use to pay down debt. In addition, you can access your plan 24/7 from anywhere as long as you have Internet access. By incorporating these components into your overall plan you significantly increase your chances to get out of debt fast! ■

Creating a Digital Record of Your Affairs By: Jacquie Ross
W
e all know that tomorrow is not promised, but many women are so busy taking care of others that they forget to take the time to make sure their own affairs are in order. When a family member dies suddenly, the next of kin is often ill-equipped to handle their affairs. None of us hope to go so suddenly, but knowing that loved ones left behind aren’t scrambling to find the will, insurance policy and financial information, while going through the grieving process, can give us peace of mind. In any event, having your personal and household information organized is a good habit in the event of an emergency or natural disaster. We’re now living in dual physical and virtual worlds. What do I mean by that? We’re paying bills online, yet we still pay some bills the traditional way. We store personal information on our computers, online and in physical filing cabinets, and many of us share other personal information on various online websites that only we have access to. This means that it’s even 22
B WOMAN Magazine / September 2013
more difficult for others to gather all of the information they may need to handle our affairs after we’re gone. Not only that, we’re taught never to share passwords and login information with others, so accessing our online information would be virtually impossible. If your current paper filing system is in chaos, it’s even more important that you get started now. So, where do you start? Begin by writing down a list of all of your most important papers and information that someone would need after your death, or if you were temporarily incapacitated. Creating a written record of all of your important information will, not only be a helpful reference for you now, but will be extremely appreciated by others later. Your record should eventually be typed up into a spreadsheet or word processing document and backed-up in a couple of different locations. If you’re still a paper and pen person, you can use a sturdy notebook, but be sure to occasionally make copies of the relevant pages so that you have a back-up somewhere else. If you would rather delegate
B ORGANIZED
this task, ask another member of the family, or consider hiring a professional organizer. Once you have the first draft, tell a close family member where they can find it or hand them a printed copy. It’s also a good idea to have a copy in a safety deposit box, another with your Power of Attorney, or a close and trusted family member or friend. If you feel comfortable keeping a back-up copy online, keep an encrypted copy in a folder in your gmail, hotmail or similar online email account. Another option is to use an online back-up service. An online back-up service will give you peace of mind in the unfortunate event of a computer hard drive crash or natural disaster. Whichever route you choose, it’s still a good idea to also keep a copy on a good quality portable flash drive, which you can store inside your fire-proof safe or keep with you at all times. You can never have too many back-ups! Creating a digital record also forces you to track down all of your vital records and re-think whether your current organizational system is a good one. In case you don’t know where to start, I have included a checklist. This list is not conclusive but will give you a head start. I would also recommend that you consult your attorney to make sure you have listed all that you need for your own personal situation.
Estate Plan: This list may include the documents or information that next of kin will need soon after your death. • Will and Trusts • Power of Attorney • Final arrangement wishes • Life insurance policy • Advance Directive • Safety deposit box and contents
Vital records: • Birth / Marriage certificates • Stock and bond certificates • Social Security card • Passport Financial Information: Be sure to include contact information and account numbers. • Attorney, CPA and Financial Planner • Bank and savings and investment accounts • Loans, including mortgage and deeds • Monthly bills • Other insurance policies, e.g. car, home. • Tax returns • Retirement/Pension Funds Other: • Extra key to your home (especially if you live alone) • Employer • Pet information • Computer/Phone/Tablet etc. login and other logins and passwords (or where they can be found), including who should/should not have access. • Business/company information (if appl.) • Services, e.g. cleaning co., landscaping, etc. • Valuables • Close relative names and contact info Please note that your document or spreadsheet provides only a list of your documents and information, including the location of the documents referenced. It will not contain the actual documents. At the end of the day, creating a digital record is simply a smart thing to do and doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. Like any organizing task, break it down into smaller steps and just get started. ■

Five Tips
for Age Appropriate Dressing for Women Over 35 By: Natalie Jobity
I
n prior generations, the style rules for women over 35 were very clear. No short skirts, bikinis, shorts, exposed arms, bared midriffs. Softer more subdued colors were the norm and pantyhose was a given with dresses and skirts. There are so many more choices and styles for the modern woman. Today’s 35+ woman is challenged with putting together a wardrobe that is flattering, stylish and age-appropriate. We’ve all had an encounter with an older woman who is wearing a skirt that is way too short, teetering in shoes designed for a younger woman, or exposing areas of her body that would have best been left to the imagination. Our perception of this woman is probably not a favorable one. No one wants to be THAT woman. This is why many of the women I work with are so frustrated by what constitutes “age-appropriate” clothing. Here’s the good news. There are not as many rules as one might think. Really, it usually boils down to good ‘ole common sense and a woman’s confidence in herself. Women over 35 do not need to dress like they are over the hill, or worse, look like they are hanging on dearly to the last vestiges of their youth. Here are 5 guidelines that can ensure you dress looking modern, stylish and absolutely age- appropriate.
24
B WOMAN Magazine / September 2013
1. Take a cue from Michelle Obama
The First Lady’s fashion appeal is unquestionable. She is on top of trends without being a slave to them. She has fun with fashion without going over the top. She dresses for the context she is in so she is always accessible and appropriate. She takes calculated risks, like her new hairdo. She always projects confidence while still looking comfortable in what she is wearing. Plus, she understands the styles that best flatter her figure. At 49 years old, she is the perfect icon for dressing age-appropriately.
2. Resist shopping in the Junior’s department no matter how small you are
Women who are petite and/or thin often think they can get away with shopping in the Junior’s section but this can be tricky. The styles of clothing in the junior department are designed for teenagers: their proportions are different than those of a woman. This can lead to issues with fit. Moreover, the styling will be based on the tastes and preferences of young women. The quality and fit of a woman’s clothing often determines whether she is age-appropriately dressed.
3. Don’t start to dress old
Often, women, in an effort to be “appropriate”, resort to going the other extreme by dressing too “old”. It is just as unfortunate for a woman to dress too young as it is for her to dress too old. If you feel frumpy in your
“Style will always trump fashion. Style is less about following trends and more about creating ensembles that makes a woman feel fabulous. When you focus on style you are able to build a wardrobe that is timeless; one that will last you for years.”
B FASHIONABLE
clothing, you probably look frumpy in them too! You can rock your unique signature look while still staying current. Having a modern hair style and fresh makeup also helps keep you looking relevant.
4. Think timelessness
As women age, they not only have a hard time keeping up with fickle fashion fads, but often find many trends simply not practical for their lifestyle. Style will always trump fashion. Style is less about following trends and more about creating ensembles that makes a woman feel fabulous. When you focus on style you are able to build a wardrobe that is timeless; one that will last you for years.
5. Dress to flatter your body
When clothes fit and flatter you, you will feel more confident, more comfortable and look more pol-
ished and pulled together. Looking polished is a goal for many older women. Embrace your figure as it is now. Dress to highlight your assets and minimize your shortcomings. Wear the colors and styles that invigorate you and that bring out your inner glow. In the end, what matters more than any rule or guideline I have shared is how comfortable you feel in your own skin. If you are confident, you will exude an air of command and self-respect. When it comes to “age-appropriate” clothing, one can argue that it’s not so much about one’s numerical age as it is about one’s attitude. After all, it is your own confidence, self-image, style preferences and ability to ‘Flaunt It’ that will ensure you are not looking like you are trying to be anyone but yourself. Be fabulously you!

Reinvent Your Health~ Reinvent Yourself
C
Part I of VIII
By Heather P. Shreve
arl Jung, the great psychiatrist, once said; “The greatest and most important problems in life are fundamentally insoluble; they can never be solved, only outgrown.” As a wellness coach and human, I have observed this to be true! As humans, we grow and learn at a universal rate, which is why we can strategize around how to ‘outgrow’ our issues. I myself have recently completely outgrown where I was four years ago. The economy took my former business away, I became divorced and was basically starting over. You’re probably wondering, how am I ever going to outgrow my situation? Health? Weight? State of mind? Well, let’s do it together! This is the first in a series of eight articles that will illuminate the 7 Invisible Forces underneath what I call The Art of Becoming and how we master our health and our life.
Laying The Groundwork
First, in any good strength-based coaching program, there are a few fundamentals of human behavior that you can leverage. It’s essential that you understand the basics underneath the Change Model 26
B WOMAN Magazine / September 2013
(or TTM). This is the way humans get from Point A to Point B in anything. It is a readiness scale that looks like this: I can’t, I won’t, I might, I will, I am, I still am. You will first need to achieve “I might” before moving forward. You can start this process by doing the exercises at the end of this article. Next, good coaching harnesses your gifts and strengths for early success. Once you identify what
“As humans, we grow and learn at a universal rate, which is why we can strategize around how to ‘outgrow’ our issues.” you have in the way of skills, you can use them in conquering your health, or anything else. For instance, are you creative? Are you a good planner? Are you good at getting resources? As an added benefit, this can move you up the readiness scale.
B WELL
Double-Bound
The second area to understand is something the coaching community calls ‘double-bound’ which means you’re STUCK! The reasons to move forward are just as compelling to stay the same. Simply put, you are unclear on your values and beliefs, about yourself and where health falls in your list of importance. So, your homework is to write down at least five gifts and strengths that you have and then go to my web site ( www.lifeguardwellness.com ) to download a Decisional Balance sheet which will start you on the road of understanding your reasons for staying where you are vs. moving forward! Next time we will take a look at the first invisible force you can use (The 21 Club) to transform your life! Until then, look up. That is where life is. ■

Lisa, a Baltimore native living in Northern New Jersey and working in New York City, was at a crossroad in her life, trying to decide whether to stay in NYC for her career, or settle down in Baltimore and be close to family and friends. One weekend, while staying with her family in Bal-

timore, Lisa, a die-hard Orioles fan, was not able to secure tickets, so she had to find a place to watch the game. There, unknowingly, she would meet her future husband, Todd. Lisa explains their first exchange: “I went to a local Canton bar, got a stool in front of the TV (I needed to be as close as possible…bad eyesight, no contact lenses and total refusal to wear glasses). I arrived a little late and because I couldn’t see the details on the TV (i.e. the score), I

nudged the guy sitting next to me and asked him for the score of the game. This guy looked at me, looked up at the TV and then at me again as if to say ‘Duh, the score is right there on the screen in front of you.’ He smirked and finally told me before he went back to watching the game.” It surely was not the response that Lisa was expecting. Over the next few hours, the game ended in a 5-4 loss. It wasn’t all bad for Lisa, as she got to meet some great new friends – the friends of the same guy that didn’t want to tell her the score. Slowly, people started to leave the bar and before she knew it, Lisa was left alone with that guy again. A conversation emerged and after talking for a while, Lisa realized that he was actually more kind than what her first impression was. He had a great sense of humor, was down to earth and “really good looking too,” which didn’t hurt. Lisa continues their story: “We exchanged phone numbers, kept in touch quite often and saw each other when I was in town. Over the next several months, we grew closer, spent more time together and became exclusive in the dating world. During this time, some things happened in my life that along with the desire to take this relationship to the next level, I made the pivotal decision to move back to Baltimore. And as they say, the rest is history.” Five years later, Lisa married the man of her dreams, Todd, and now they have two amazing little boys together. Their house is a home full of love and every day she is “so very thankful for my life and my family.” Lisa and Todd still make sure to watch the games together, and she has decided to start wearing her contact lenses, so she no longer has to bother her husband for the score.

Baltimore Q & A with Sharan Nixon, Executive Producer/Founder of Baltimore Fashion Week
Interviewed, Written and Photographed By Yvonne Lawson
we move into our sixth year, we are becoming a better known fashion event for Baltimore.
Q: Can you tell our readers a little bit about yourself? A: I was born in California and raised from a young age in Baltimore, so I consider myself from Baltimore. I am a mother of three sons. I love to produce events; anything that is creative and can keep me busy and my mind alive. Q: Can you provide me with a history of Baltimore Fashion Week? A: My vision for Baltimore Fashion Week started on June 22, 2006. I had attended the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week and came to the realization that Baltimore really needed this type of event. I knew someone had to start this event in our city, I just didn’t know it would be me, well not at first. I started thinking about how this event would play out in Baltimore, and that got me thinking that I may be able to do this. I reached out to many mentors for help on starting this event and that proved to be very hard. My current mentor, who works with Fashion on the Hudson, helped guide me and assist me in making my vision a reality. At first this event wasn’t well received, but now as
Q: What does fashion mean to you, personally and as the producer of Baltimore Fashion Week? A: To me, fashion doesn’t have just one, single definition. It’s more about learning to express your own style and creativity, that’s important. It’s also important to ‘own’ what you have on and be confident in what you wear. As the producer of Baltimore Fashion Week, my goal is to help teach people about fashion, to explain how one individual can make their look better, but not tell them how to dress. I can’t tell someone how to dress or that they have no style, as a producer it is imperative of me to pass on fashion knowledge. Q: How would you define Baltimore’s fashion? A: In one word, I would say unique. In Baltimore, you can go on any street, on any corner and see a variety of fashion styles. You can see stylings of Alexander McQueen and Dolce & Gabanna. Baltimore is so diverse; there are so many different people in our city, with different styles. Baltimore’s fashion is defined by the areas in the city. Q: What can we expect from this year’s event? A: You can expect fabulous items from all the designers; all the collections are simply amazing with great construction of the garments. There’s a little bit of everything going on in the shows this year, from avant-garde, formal wear, casual wear, men’s wear and plus size. All the designers were chosen based on how their collection will look on the runway and their cleanliness in sketch and design; only the best were selected. ■
Fashion Week Q & A with Designers
What The Attendees Had to Say
Q & A with Wyntress Hill (Maryland designer)
Q: What was your inspiration for your collection you showcased tonight? A: “For my collection, I focused on color and randomness, that’s two things I really like.” Q: Is this your first time presenting your designs at Baltimore Fashion Week? A: “This year is actually my second year at Baltimore Fashion Week and proba-
bly my fifth or sixth fashion show.” Q: Where would consumers be able to purchase your designs? A: “My company is called L.I.M.E & Company and you can find me on Facebook or Instagram, the name of my company stands for Love Is My Everything.”
Q & A with “Diva” Davanna Booker (New Jersey designer)
Q: What was your inspiration for your collection you showcased tonight? A: “I like this time of year, when summer is coming to an end and fall is about to begin, that was a bit of my inspiration for this line. I used a lot of bright colors and fabrics.” Q: Is this your first time presenting at Baltimore Fashion Week? A: “This year is my first year at Baltimore Fashion Week and my first year designing.” Q: I understand you are pretty well known for your runway walk and were once on America’s Next Top Model, can you tell me a little bit about that? A: “I was on America’s Next Top Model, not as a contestant, but I went on the show to teach the models how to walk.” Q: How would you describe Baltimore’s style? A: “I would say Baltimore has a very interesting style, very different.”
Q & A with Duane Walker (Maryland/DC designer)
Q: Can you tell me a bit about your collection you showcased tonight? A: “I focused on the winter season. I used a lot of different textures, muted colors and jumps of bright colors. My focus was on color and fine details.” Q: If you had to sum up your own style into one word, what would it be? A: “Fun. If it isn’t fun, it isn’t worth wearing.”
“I came out to the event tonight to see Top Shop Kitty Boutique and this is my first year attending,” said Carisa Hudson, 27, Baltimore resident. Carisa coins her personal style as being vivacious and her style icons range from Jennifer Lopez to Miley Cyrus. “I am excited to see what styles of fashion will be shown tonight, “said Lana Burton, 54, Baltimore resident. “I would like to see what the fall trends will be like this year.” Lana Burton characterizes her personal style as being very colorful and trendy.
“We came out tonight to see my sister, Alyssa Rivera, and my best friend, model in the show, “ said Emily Stewart, 15, and Contessa Rivera, 13. When asked how they would describe their own fashion, Emily said she is very sporty, whereas, Contessa said she likes to dress up. SHAY SHARPE’S PINK WISHES
BLACK TIE FUNDRAISER EVENT Greetings!
I am reaching out to you today to formally invite you to the SSPW Black Tie Fundraiser and to inform you of this year's sponsorship opportunities. I would Þrst like to introduce you to our organization. Shay Sharpe's Pink Wishes Inc. (SSPW) is a 501(c) 3 non-proÞt organization that grants wishes to young women 40 and under who have been diagnosed with terminal breast cancer (we deÞne terminal as having one year or less to live). When SSPW is not granting wishes, we are sharing cancer resources and mentoring young women who have been diagnosed or affected by breast cancer. We are often speaking in the community across the US and on social media forums, educating our peers on the importance of knowing your body. Young women can and do get breast cancer. We are currently looking for businesses to help sponsor this event to increase our wish granting opportunities. While we are immensely excited about what we have been able to accomplish to date, we could not have done so without donations (monetary and inkind) from individuals and businesses across the country.

B WOMAN Magazine / September 2013
BeneÞts of Sponsorships:
Sponsoring SSPW and its events is a cost effective way for companies, Þrms and individuals to gain exposure for their products and services as they support young women who are dying from breast cancer, the second leading cause of cancer death in women in the United States. Sponsoring SSPW events enhances a company’s recognition within the breast cancer, health and multicultural communities, strengthens their relations with existing clients and helps to generate new business. Sponsoring SSPW gives businesses and individuals the opportunity to provide Þrst hand support to women around the world facing a life-threatening illness. We would love the opportunity to discuss this further. We hope that your company can help us continue our wish granting efforts. Please feel free to contact me if you have any additional questions or concerns. Visit our website, www.shaysharpespinkwishes.org for more information. I look forward to hearing from you soon.Thank you in advance for your consideration and time.
