INTERVIEW LOCATIONS

INTERVIEW | NEW RESIDENTS SANDRO THE STUDENT LADY WITH TWO YOUNG CHILDREN

DOG-WALKER

•LIVED IN THE PROPERTY FOR 3 YEARS

•FROM ANOTHER NEIGHBOURHOOD (KAPPELLE) •VISITING HER FATHER WHO USED TO LIVE IN ANOTHER NEIGHBOURHOOD BUT MOVE HERE DUE TO HIS HOME BEING DEMOLISHED

BASIC INFORMATION

THOUGHTS ON THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

•STUDENT AT AMSTERDAM

•LIVED IN THE AREA FOR 3 YEARS

•MAIN REASON FOR LIVING HERE: ANTI-SQUATTER AD HOC (CHEAP ACCOMMODATION)

•WORKS AS A STYLING AGENT •MOVED HERE TO BE CLOSER TO WORK

•WILL LIVE IN THE AREA UNTIL END OF STUDIES (IN 3-4 YEARS TIME) •WILL MOVE TO THE CITY CENTRE (RENT IS PROHIBITIVE AT THE MOMENT FOR A STUDENT)

•GREAT NEIGHBOURHOOD

•FEELS UNSAFE AT NIGHT DUE TO DRUGS, SMOKING, DRINKING ON STREET CORNERS AND IN GARAGES

IMPROVEMENTS THAT CAN BE MADE TO THE DWELLINGS:

•NOT SO MANY DUTCH PEOPLE, LOTS OF FOREIGNERS AND MOROCCANS SO IT IS A CULTURALLY DIVERSE PLACE

•CONNECTION BETWEEN OLD AND NEW DEVELOPMENT IMPROVING, ALTHOUGH MORE TIME IS NEEDED

-DWELLINGS COULD BE MADE MORE SOUNDPROOF -THE ADDITION OF A BALCONY

•SOCIABLE AREA: ORGANISATION OF EVENTS, FESTIVALS IN THE LOCAL PARK

•WOULD CONSIDER MOVING AWAY IN THE FUTURE FOR THE SAFETY OF HER YOUNG CHILDREN

•GOOD LEVEL OF COMMUNICATION FROM THE MUNICIPALITY (SP) E.G. DOOR TO DOOR VISITS GIVING OUT INFORMATION REGARDING THE PLACEMENT OF LOCAL REFUGEES, GOOD LEVEL OF TRANSPARENCY REGARDING THEIR INTENTIONS

•IMPROVEMENTS THAT CAN BE MADE: MORE GARBAGE CANS IN THE STREETS

•LOTS OF STUDENTS IN THIS AREA •DIVIDED TERMS OF RESIDENCY •CROOSWIJK IS GRADUALLY IMPROVING

THOUGHTS ON THE POPULATION

•FEELS THE AREA IS UNSAFE FOR RAISING KIDS, DUTCH PEOPLE TENDS TO HAVE FAMILIES LIVING IN THE SUBURBS, OUTSIDE ROTTERDAM

•IN THE HOUSES: MOSTLY FAMILIES •RENTAL UNITS: ELDERLY RESIDENTS AND STUDENTS •PERCEIVED TREND IN POPULATION: YOUNGER RESIDENTS

INTERVIEW | OLD RESIDENTS LIEN , MICKEY MOUSE SECOND HAND CLOTHING

BASIC INFORMATION

THOUGHTS ON THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

THOUGHTS ON THE POPULATION

•LIVES IN SCHIEBROEK •HER MOM STARTED THIS SHOP 35 YEARS AGO •SHE HAS BEEN WORKING HERE FOR 20 YEARS •A LOT OF DIFFERENT PEOPLE VISIT HER SHOP, NOT ONLY PEOPLE FROM ROTTERDAM, BUT ALSO OTHER CITIES FROM THE HAGUE TO APELDOORN •THE IDEA OF THE SHOP: YOU BRING YOUR CLOTHES YOU WANT TO GET RID OF, SHE TRIES TO SELL THEM FOR YOU AND YOU WILL GET 60% OF IT •OVER THE YEARS A LOT OF THINGS HAVE CHANGED IN THIS STREET, THE MUNICIPALITY WANTED TO MAKE THIS STREET A ‘CEMETERY STREET’ SO ALMOST ALL THE SHOPS THAT WERE THERE (BAKER, BUTCHER, GREEN GROCER ETC.) HAD TO MOVE OUT. THEY WANTED HER OUT AS WELL BUT BECAUSE OF HER CONTRACT THAT WASN’T POSSIBLE. •REASON THEY MOVED THERE: THEY LOCATION IS NICE, VIEW ON THE FOREST, NEAR THE CITY CENTRE •THE OLD PEOPLE, THEY ALL KNEW EACH OTHER AND LIEN THINKS THEY WILL NEVER GET THE OLD CROOSWIJK BACK. ALTHOUGH A FIRST STEP WOULD BE: BRING THE SHOPS BACK AND GET RID OF THE CEMETERY SHOPS. •BAD COMMUNICATION: 250 REFUGEES ARRIVED IN THE OLD SWIMMING POOL SCHUTTERSVELD. THE PEOPLE LIVING IN CROOSWIJK RECEIVED A LETTER AFTER THEY ARRIVED INSTEAD OF ON FOREHAND. •THE PEOPLE LIVING IN THE ‘NEW CROOSWIJK’ DON’T HAVE ANY CONNECTION WITH THE NEIGHBOURHOOD. THEY GO FROM THEIR HOUSE TO THEIR CAR TO THEIR DESTINATION AND VICE VERSA. THERE IS NO COLLECTIVE SPACE AT ALL.

SHOP KEEPER BAKER

•LIVED IN THE AREA FOR 19 YEARS •VOLUNTEER IN THIS EXCHANGE-ONLY SHOP •NO MONEY INVOLVED IN THE TRANSACTION OF GOODS; GOODS CAN BE “PURCHASED” USING A POINT SYSTEM WHICH CAN ONLY BE ACCUMULATED THROUGH THE DONATION OF YOUR OWN GOODS- THIS IS TO ENABLE LOW-INCOME FAMILIES ACCESS TO MERCHANDISES

•SOCIABLE NEIGHBOURHOOD: E.G. LAWYER VISITS THE LOCAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ONCE A WEEK TO GIVE FREE LEGAL ADVICE •RECENT CHANGES INCLUDE: AN ABUNDANCE OF NEW BUILDINGS, HOMES AND STORES •NUMBER OF STORES STAYS CONSTANT BUT THE LOCATION AND TYPE OF SHOP FLUCTUATES •THE CONSTRUCTION OF NEW BUILDINGS MEANT THE DISPLACEMENT OF LOW-INCOME FAMILIES AND THE ADDITION OF MIDDLE-INCOME FAMILIES •MANY OF THE ORIGINAL TENANTS HAVE LIVED IN THIS NEIGHBOURHOOD ALL THEIR LIFE, MANY WERE BORN HERE, INCLUDING NON-DUTCH NATIONALITIES •SEVERAL GENERATIONS LIVE IN ONE AREA •LOTS OF POLICE OFFICERS HERE WHICH HAS LOWERED CRIME RATES •POLICE OFFICERS CAN BE CONTACTED VIA TWITTER •BEST THING ABOUT THIS AREA: COMMUNITY, CONTACT WITH PEOPLE

•NEW RESIDENTS MOSTLY MIX WELL IN THE COMMUNITY

•LIVED IN THE AREA FOR 47 YEARS •PLAN ON SPENDING THE REST OF LIFE IN THE SAME HOME •CLOSE FAMILY MEMBERS ARE LIVING WITHIN CLOSE VICINITY OF EACH OTHER

•PLENTY OF LOW-INCOME RESIDENTS LEFT DUE TO DEMOLITION •THOSE WHO HAS TO MOVE TO MAKE SPACE FOR THE NEW HOUSING WERE COMPENSATED •NEIGHBOURHOOD IS DIVERSE IN TERMS OF AGE, NATIONALITIES •OCCASIONALLY DIFFICULTIES WITH THE OTHER NATIONALITIES E.G. MOROCCAN CHILDREN ARE RUDER THAN LOCAL… •LACK OF AMENITIES IN THE AREA- ONLY A BAKERY AND SUPERMARKET •LOTS OF SHOPS AND SERVICES CATERED TO FUNERALS

•YOUNG FAMILIES LEFT FOR OTHER NEIGHBOURHOODS •AREA IS BECOMING FUN AGAIN, WITH THE INJECTION OF AN ARTISTIC CROWD AND STUDENTS IN THE AREA

INTERVIEW | OLD RESIDENTS POTTERY WORKSHOP / TEACHER

BASIC INFORMATION

THOUGHTS ON THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

THOUGHTS ON THE POPULATION

•WIFE IS THE OWNER OF THIS POTTERY WORKSHOP •SHE SELLS HER CREATIONS AT THE LOCAL MARKET, AND HAS TWO SHOPS IN THE CITY WHICH DISTRIBUTES HER POTTERIES •RESIDENT OF 27 YEARS •AN ACTIVE PROTESTOR AGAINST “GENTRIFICATION”, PREVENTED THE DEMOLITION OF THE STREET ON WHICH THE POTTERY WORKSHOP IS BASED •“PITY THAT THEY DESTROYED THE OLD BUILDINGS” •DEMOLITION DESTROYED THE COMMUNITY •LOTS OF LOCAL SHOPS WENT OUT OF BUSINESS BECAUSE THE NUMBER OF RESIDENTS IN THE AREA DECREASED WHEN THE BUILDINGS WERE TORN DOWN •IN THE CONSULTATION SESSION HE FELT THAT THE ANSWERS GIVEN BY THE COMMUNITY WERE MANIPULATED •THE DEVELOPMENT WAS SUPPOSE TO MAKE A PROFIT FOR THE HOUSING ASSOCIATION, WHEN IN FACT IT CAME AT A LOSS •HAD PLANS TO BUILD APARTMENTS BUT THE RESIDENTS WANTED TRADITIONAL LOW-RISE HOUSES INSTEAD •HOUSES HAVE BEEN NEGLECTED FOR 25 YEARS LEADING TO POOR CONDITIONS WHICH ARE ALMOST TOO LATE TO REPAIR, AND CERTAINLY VERY EXPENSIVE TO RENOVATE •NEVER FEELS UNSAFE TO BE WALKING AROUND

•DIVERSE CULTURE IN THE AREA •INCREASING NUMBER OF YOUNG PEOPLE IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD DUE TO ONLY SHORT-TERM LEASES BEING OFFERED

OLD MARRIED COUPLE

•LIVES ACROSS FROM THE SHOP •RESIDENT OF 50 YEARS, MARRIED FOR 45 YEARS •HAVE CHILDREN BUT THEY LIVE IN ANOTHER AREA

•WOULD NOT LIKE TO MOVE AWAY •THERE ARE TWO COMMUNITY CENTRES IN THE AREA: AN OLD COMMUNITY CENTRE WHICH SHE VISITS REGULARLY FOR THE PAST 6 YEARS, BUT IT IS BEING CLOSED DOWN AND A NEW COMMUNITY CENTRE WHICH IS BEING RENOVATED FOR A LOT OF MONEY •SENSE OF COMMUNITY: SHE KNOWS EVERYONE ON HER STREET BUT “THEY ARE ALL DUTCH” •THOUGHTS ON “FUNERAL STREET”- DOES NOT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH IT BECAUSE SHE CAN UNDERSTAND THAT THAT PREVIOUS BUSINESSES WERE UNSUSTAINABLE IN THE FACE OF THE 2008 FINANCIAL CRASH, AND REDUCED NUMBER OF POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS

INTERESTING AREA- LOTS OF NATIONALITIES

TANNING SALON CUSTOMER

•BORN AND RAISED IN CROOSWIJK, LIVES IN A 20 YEAR OLD HOUSE

•OLD HOMES WERE DESTROYED TO MAKE ROOM FOR NEW ONES, WHICH ARE TWICE AS EXPENSIVE AS THE ORIGINAL SO THE FORMER RESIDENTS ARE PRICED OUT •DEMOLITION DESTROYED THE COMMUNITY- THE RESIDENTS USED TO LIVE IN A “VILLAGE-LIKE ATMOSPHERE” IN THE CITY, BUT THAT SCALE OF SOCIAL NETWORK HAS BEEN GREATLY REDUCED •LACK OF CONNECTION BETWEEN THE OLD PART AND THE NEW PART •LACK OF TRUST WITHIN THE AREA •IMPROVEMENTS WHICH CAN BE MADE: -MORE STREETLIFE -LESS FUNERAL SHOPS IN THE AREA, MORE DIVERSITY E.G. GROCERY STORES

•PURCHASED UNITS ARE CATERED TOWARDS HIGHER-INCOME PEOPLE •OCCUPANTS IN THE NEW RENTAL UNITS DO NOT TAKE CARE OF THE PROPERTIES, SO THE NEW BUILDINGS QUICKLY DETERIORATES

INTERVIEW SUMMARY

OLD CROOSWIJK

NEW CROOSWIJK

MIXED FEELINGS TOWARDS THE NEW POPULATION: SOME HAVE INTEGRATED INTO THE COMMUNITY BETTER THAN OTHERS

NEW RESIDENTS VIEW THE AREA AS UNSAFE AT NIGHT

INCREASING BUMBER OF YOUNG STUDENTS AND ARTISTS IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

THEREFORE THIS IS UNSUITABLE FOR RAISING YOUNG CHILDREN

THE AREA FEELS SAFE DUE TO AN ACTIVE COMMUNITY AND STREETLIFE THE NEIGHBOURHOOD LACKS COMMERICAL DIVERSITY
