5 Belgian Comic Strip Center in short

The Jewish Museum of Belgium

A marriage of Art Nouveau architecture and comic strip art The Belgian Comic Strip Center is located in the very heart of Brussels. It is housed in a magnificent Art Nouveau building (architect Victor Horta, 1906) and opened its doors to the public on 6 October 1989. In no time this impressive museum has become one of Brussels major tourist attractions. Every year more than 200,000 visitors come here to explore 4,200 m² worth of permanent and temporary exhibitions.

Exhibitions Spread over 3 floors the Belgian Comic Strip Center proposes 4 permanent and up to 3 temporary exhibitions. All you ever wanted to know about the craftsmanship of a comic strip artist, from an idea to the bookshop, a selection of original artwork from the collections, the history of the building, and the history of Belgium’s greatest comic strip heroes: these subjects are permanently on display. Also our “Gallery” always boasts a contemporary comic strip, and there are two areas for temporary exhibits. Every year the Belgian Comic Strip Center regales its visitors with at least 4 major temporary exhibitions and 7 Gallery exhibitions.

Library One of the core activities of the Belgian Comic Strip Center is of course its library. The library conserves 90,000 titles of comic strip related literature: albums, specialized magazines, study literature, biographies of authors, etc. Every year hundreds of researchers from all over the world come here to consult the library, since it is one of the largest libraries in its field.

External activities Even if the Belgian Comic Strip Center’s is best known for the activities in its own building, there is a good reason why we call it a center. It has always contributed to external projects that promote the image of the city and the country as a center of comic strip art. Our outside realizations include: travelling exhibitions, comic strip murals (with the City of Brussels), comic strip stamps (with the Belgian Post Office), and consultancy in various fields. Current exhibition House of the living Currently a unique exhibition is held until September 30 2013 on Jewish traditional funeral art. Society is from its origin a combined of both the living and dead. The birth, just as death, reveals particularities of human community within which she evolves in. The exhibition with its artifacts invites a reflection on death, mourning, faith and memory.

The next exhibition A German passion for Jewish art – the Lammel collection From 2 November 2013 to 2 February 2014 Vernissage: 31 October 2013

Thanks to an exceptional donation and generosity by Christel and Manfred Lammel, the Jewish museum of Belgium enriched its collection of art work in 2012. These include a total of 653 objects of paintings, sculptures, books as well as posters and historical prints. During a period of thirty years, the Lammel couple from Eifel in Germany amassed a vast collection of art and literature dedicated to Jewish culture. Their efforts proved a commendable spirit to conserve and spread Jewish culture in the aftermath of the Second World War. Due to health reasons, the Lammel couple decided to offer our institution the collection which comprises of, amongst others, work of art by Jewish Germans artist, many of whom emigrated to Israel. Work of art by artists such as Jakob Steinhardt, Lea Grundig, Jakob Pins an Yigal Tumarkin and many others are presented in the exhibition.

Jewish Museum of Belgium Rue des Minimes 21 1000 Brussels Telephone: 02 512 19 63 Opening Hours: Every day from 10am to 5pm. Closed on Mondays Night showings available upon inquiry

L E STYX Created in 1967, Le Styx is an Arthouse cinema located in the Ixelles district of Brussels. This “smallest cinema” in Brussels is one of those rare neighborhood cinemas which have managed to resist the trends of mainstream cinematic development. The two small screening rooms with 37 and 39 seats were renovated in 2004 and offer today a high level of comfort and cinematic experience.

Despite facing many difficulties throughout its history, Le Styx has managed to survive and maintain its quality and identity thanks to its host of loyal cinema goers who are attracted by the exciting and unique movies on offer. The program of Le Styx offers a second chance to those artistic works often neglected by mainstream picture houses and also revives the good old classic masterpieces.

The Cantillon Brewery Museum of the Gueuze

V

isiting the Cantillon Brewery is like a trip back in time. A living museum and brewery in operation since 1900, it’s a great place to take a tour--or to sip on a very tasty brew. For over a century, the Van Roy-Cantillon family has been making traditional Gueuze-Lambic. Still today, the same beers, tools and brewing process are utilized at the brewery and on display in the museum.

Depending on timing and season, visitors to the Cantillon Brewery/ Brussels Museum of the Gueuze can watch brewing or bottling; the cleaning of the barrels; or the making of fruit beers. Just as it was done a century ago, the process of making lambic is seasonal, in sync with the rhythms of nature.

So what exactly is lambic? A good question. The belgian elixir, traditionally made in the Pajottenland region southwest of Brussels, gets its distinctive taste from spontaneous (as opposed to cultivated) fermentation. Part of the secret of Belgium’s lambic is brettanomyces, a wild yeast found in the valley of the Senne. Exposure to native yeasts and bacteria give lambic its distinctive taste; a taste that is hard to classify, but falls in the range of dry and slightly sour. The unblended variety is cloudy and uncarbonated. The brew is peculiar to the uninitiated but ultimately refreshing--a worthy if acquired taste.

In 1999, the Cantillon Brewery decided to pay respect to its origins by returning to an organic method of brewing. Today, the brewery prides itself on using only organically grown cereals for their lambic. The return to organic methods is marked by a special label designed by two local Brussels artists, painter Raymond Goffin and photographer André Mollekens.

Though lambic is a satisfying beverage unto itself, its also inspired variations on a theme. Gueuze, for example, is a mixture of lambics (both young and old) that goes through a second fermentation, which gives the brew a taste distinctive from traditional lambic. There’s also faro, a lighter, sweetened beer; and kriek, a fruity but dry version of lambic that is refermented with sour cherries.

WHERE IT IS:

56 rue Gheude 1070 Brussels

Hours: Monday to Friday from 9 AM till 5 PM Saturday from 10 AM to 5 PM Closed on Sundays and public holidays Entrance fee (6 euros) includes a glass of beer. Guided tours for groups (in French, Dutch, or English) can be arranged on request. For more information, call 02.521.49.28.

Interview with MAD Brussels director,

Alexandra Lambert

A

lexandra Lambert is the director of Mode and Design (MAD) Brussels, a collaborative effort to foster and support creative voices in Belgium’s capital. The time has come for the city’s artistic side to get due credit, says Lambert, a Brussels native, born and bred. We spoke with Lambert about MAD’s mission and Brussels’ emerging reputation as a funky, affordable place for artists to live and create. As described in MAD’s mission statement: Belgian creativity is as rich as it is contradictory. When it comes to fashion and design, Belgians have come up with an alluring compromise between art and commerce. They are determined, hard-working and individualistic, which probably explains why some of them have been so successful. They can be avant-garde and accessible at the same time, progressive in their ideas, but realistic in their goals. However visionary some of their creations may be, Belgian designers have their feet on the ground. This pragmatic approach -combined with a flair for beauty and poetry- has given Belgium a unique place within the design and fashion fields, inspiring several generations of creative minds. “Belgium has a thriving creative scene, gaining increasing attention from the outside world. More than ever, Brussels is at the forefront of a New Renaissance, where disciplines can mix freely and work together, combining their strengths and key assets. Transdisciplinary projects abound in a city where boundaries between creative worlds are not as clear-cut as in other

capitals. Possibilities seem endless -as far as partnerships are concerned- and a positive energy permeates its most prolific areas. Unlike other cities in Europe, Brussels does not have a jaded outlook when it comes to pushing and encouraging its own talent.

tants of Brussels don’t think of it like this. There have been more and more [creative] things happening in the past five or ten years, and we wanted to show people what’s going on behind the scenes: not just stuff happening on the streets, but the initiatives that exist especially for creative people.

Q: What is MAD Brussels? A: The project started in 2006-it was a problematic year for fashion and design in Brussels, and it was an effort to get tourists to see the city not as an annoying city but as a creative city. The government of Brussels and city of Brussels gave money to develop these programs--I worked for the Tourism Office and Foreign Department to promote fashion and design abroad. [Eventually] we started to envision a project of a fashion and design center, and in 2007 there was a European collaboration with France to do urban renewal in neighborhoods with difficulties.

Q: What prompted this artistic renaissance over the past decade? A: First, you have more and more international people living in Brussels, and there’s a multicultural spirit in the city. There’s also a consciousness of the quality of creative schools in Brussels. Many politicians also began to show interest in artistic endeavors and wanted to give financial support to show and promote artists abroad. It’s a mix of different attitudes from different parts of the city--the artists, government, inhabitants. Everyone wants to promote something different.

Q: What do you mean by promoting the creative side of Brussels rather than the “annoying” side?

Q: What does MAD do to support artists?

A: In 2006 Brussels had the image of an administrative capital--it was not thought of as a creative place to be. In fact, many inhabi-

A: We have several kinds of support: economic support for people who want to be managers of their own businesses; an em-

ployment service; and another part of our work is to help people who don’t want to develop their own structure but instead want to work for a company. We will be very specialized for the people working in fashion and design sectors, but we will also focus on photographers, models, and make-up artists--every professional in those two sectors. We would like to show that there are many professionals working in those two fields and it’s a big part of the economy. We will also have residencies for designers and stylists and we would like to develop international exchanges with other fashion or design centers at the international level, and we would like to send our fashion/designers abroad. The designers in our residencies will work on neighborhood projects, or work with a business, school, or other public structure.

Q: So it’s an exciting time to be young and creative in Brussels? A: It’s a good time at the moment. It’s a very pleasant city--the art of living is very good and not so expensive; it’s very unique with the concentration of so many different cultures; and everything is really free for creativity. There are no borders you can’t cross.

The Mercedes

House in Brussels

D

on’t let the name mislead you-The Mercedes House in Brussels is about much more than just cars. Of course, if cars are what you are after, you won’t be disappointed. The showroom features a regular display of sleek and shiny car models, and the on-site boutique has everything a car junkie’s heart might desire, from fashion conscious clothing to high-quality pens and designer key rings. The lure of The Mercedes House does not stop at automobiles, however. It is also a place where

cars meet music, and art meets food. Situated on the Grand Sablon in Brussels, The Mercedes House has quickly become a cultural hub in the city, adored by locals and visited by tourists and art-inclined jet-setters. Located in a building designed by architect Jo Crepain in 2003, the space itself is modern and light, built with the same attention to detail and comfort that goes into the company’s cars. In addition to the boutique, the house hosts regular art exhibits, classical music and jazz concerts.

19 The Mercedes House also opens its doors as a business center, making it the perfect spot for your next seminar, press conference, event or party. Of course, no artistic or business endeavor is complete without a culinary counterpart, and the space’s restaurant will not disappoint. Resta bar WY, managed by chef Bart de Pooter, brings the same chic precision you would expect behind the steering wheel of a Mercedes to your plate. The WY uses only the finest ingredients and takes pride in using both local and artisanal products. The theme is also seasonal, and the menu changes according to the bounty of summer, the earthiness of fall, the heartiness of winter, and the fresh growth of spring. The WY features the best of star chef Bart de Pooter in collaboration with two other rising culinary stars, Guus Van Zon and Bjorn Verreckt. Both are there to ensure that the dining or drinking experience lives up to what the name suggests: sheer elegance and subtle refinement. Never stuffy but always chic, The Mercedes House is quickly becoming a gathering spot for both locals and visitors, living up to its mandate to help build community in a city steeped in culture, curiosity and an open, artistically-minded spirit.

BRUSSELS LAEKEN CEMETARY

A

place for quiet reflection, also a place for architectural marvel, Laeken Cemetary is gaining a reputation as the “Belgian Père-Lachaise,” so named after the Parisian cemetery built in 1804. The peaceful cemetery is one of Belgium’s most famous burial grounds and is the final resting spot for a multitude of famous artists, musicians, politicians and nobility. Graves include those of opera singer La Malibran, architects J. Poelaert and A. Balat, writer Michel de Ghelderode, race car driver Camille Jenatzy, painter Fernand Khnopff, and surgeon Louis-Joseph Seutin. The “open-air funeral museum” also features a bronze caste of Auguste Rodin’s Thinker and a small museum dedicated to the work of sculptor Ernest Salu and his successors. (Much of their work can be seen throughout the cemetery in the form of various monuments and sculptures.)

Adjacent to the cemetery is another remarkable structure, the Church of Our Lady of Laeken, designed by architect Joseph Poelaert and built in memory of Queen Louise-Marie, wife of King Leopold I. Whether you’re in the mood for a peaceful spot to meditate, you are looking for somewhere to spend a quiet day, or you’re seeking an architectural trip through time--from neoclassicism to expressionism, Romanticism and other new waves--the cemetery and adjacent church, in the northern part of Brussels, make for a good day trip away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. 26 Community Help Service (CHS) is a non-profit organisation established in 1969. We provide information, support and mental health services to anyone in Belgium who needs help and prefers to speak English. We are committed to offering assistance, support and mental health information to the community at large regardless of nationality and taking into account individual financial circumstances. CHS Help Line: The CHS Help Line is an anonymous, 24 hour, English language, crisis, support and general information telephone service. It is operated by volunteers, who are trained, supported and supervised by professionals. The Help Line is an English speaking service for children, adolescents and adults. Call +32 (0)2 648 40 14. An anonymous and confidential 24 hour Crisis and Information telephone service offering advice free of charge. Why CHS? Moving to a new country for work or as an accompanying spouse can be fraught with confusion, anxiety and complexity which in some cases can lead to culture shock and depression. This can be not only a significant personal crisis for the individual concerned, but this emotional state can have a detrimental impact on colleagues and the employer. “Relocation experts anecdotally add that most failures of expatriate assignments are because of personal, not professional, issues, and divorce rates are higher than average…” Robin Pascoe, author of many books for expatriates. How CHS Helps: CHS clients come from over 50 countries. They call the Help Line, they come in for therapy, or they seek testing for children with learning difficulties or emotional problems. By contacting CHS, clients take the first steps toward understanding and adjusting to the demands life away from home may bring about. Whether it’s the working partner or their entire family CHS can provide practical guidance on living in Belgium, from finding the right school to finding a local English-speaking doctor or tradesman etc. Help Line Volunteers: Every year thousands of adults and adolescents contact the Community Help Service (CHS) in need of our help. The HELP LINE provides an anonymous and confidential, crisis, support and information service to the English-Speaking community.

We are looking for volunteers who are: • • • • •

Manneken-Pis: The real story behind the iconic statue.

M

anneken-Pis, literally “little man pee,” in the Dutch dialect of Marols or “le petit Julien,” in French, is one of Brussels’ most famous and beloved citizens. But what’s the story behind this iconic, if tiny, figure? These days, the statue has become something of a cliche--recreated on t-shirts and beer labels around the world. At its origins, however, the famous Manneken-Pis is practical in purpose, with a little bit of whimsy thrown in for good measure. The statue of the “pissing boy,” as he is commonly called, has led a long and not always easy life, surviving the bombardment of Brussels in 1695 and various wear and tear over the centuries. According to local records, the fountain, located at the intersection of Rue de l'Étuve/Stoofstraat and Rue du Chêne/Eikstraat, was used as early as the 15th century to help distribute drinking water across the city. For tourists, the statue is high on the list for places to visit, but for many locals the meaning is much deeper. To some, the fountain has come

to symbolize a certain spirit of Brussels that is both steadfast, playful and highly individual. Though the statue is no longer used for water distribution, it has come to nourish the city in a new way--providing entertainment and a sense of play. It also reminds residents of the city’s rich history and perpetually evolving identity. Still today, and since the 18th century, the little statue is dressed up to mark special occasions and festivals. You never know what you might find “little man pee” masquerading as the next time you walk by. As for the little boy who served as inspiration for the statue? This is where legend tends to overshadow facts. One tale maintains that the statue is a likeness of a boy who saved Brussels from fire and disaster by peeing on the fuse of an explosive; another story depicts the boy as the victim of a witch’s spell, frozen in time as punishment for peeing on her door. Whatever the case may be, the statue is likely here to stay--snapshot fodder for the many visitors who visit the city each year, and a good reminder of humor and history for the city’s lucky inhabitants.

The City

Getting Around

33

Brussels used to be a city with traffic heavily dominated by cars. However, public transportation campaigns and cycle hire schemes have changed the trend in recent years. The bright yellow “Villo bikes” are a useful and healthy means for getting around the city, and the 180 stations in Brussels means you will at most only be 450 meters away from a station. An annual season ticket costs €32 and can be purchased online at www.villo.be or in one of the Carrefour shops in the Brussels region. Alternatively, daily and weekly subscriptions can be purchased directly at bike stations. The national train network in Belgium is run by SNCB/NMBS who offer a wide range of discounts to different groups in society as well as seasonal passes. More information about these can be found on www.b-rail.be. Public transportation within Brussels is run by STIB/ MIVB who operates the metro, bus and tram lines in the city. These usually run every day between 5.30am – 1am. If you have missed that last metro home on a Friday night, nightbuses run until 3am during weekends. Another option is to use Collecto (www.collecto.org), who run collective and shared taxis between 11pm to 6am and have a number of collection points throughout the city. If you however cannot live without a car, there are a number of options available aside from bringing your own from home or purchasing one here. Cambio.be offer convenient car sharing solutions for those who don’t need a car 24/7. Zen Car (www.zencar.eu) is another good alternative for those with an even more “green” mindset. Their stations throughout the city hold cars that are 100% electric.

Accomodation Brussels has relatively affordable living compared to other major capitals in Europe. You can search for apartments through numerous real estate agents or look for a local agent in the area that you are most interested in.
