BRONX SCIENCE KEY CLUB

MAR '21 VOL 10.1

EDITOR'S NOTE Hi everyone!

It's nice to meet you. I'm Laura and I've taken over Shaon's position as your Bulletin Editor and Webmaster. I'm really looking forward to creating more of these lovely newsletters, as well as to see how you all will serve our communities. It's crazy to think that March is over already. Last March was, to say the least, a complete whirlwind of emotions, but I think things are looking up. People 16+ are now able to get vaccinated, and hopefully by next September, school will be in full swing. I can't wait for us all, but especially the Freshmen, to step inside Bronx again. In Key Club news, we have so much in store for the next few months and year in general. We hope you stick around, and help us build our little Bronx Science Key Club community. But for now, if you want a recap of the last month of the service year (and a sneak peak into the future), read on. Oh, and I also sprinkled in a few symbols that represents our club. From beavers to keys, I hope you have a fun time reading through and finding them :)) Yours in Service, Laura

Hi everyone! I am so honored to serve as your president for this service year! Hi Key Clubbers! My name’s William Wu and I’m both honored and excited to serve as the President’s right hand man in the upcoming service year. A college dropout once said to me, “Minor setbacks, major comebacks.” and that’s exactly what we’re going to do in the upcoming service year. The Bronx Science Key Club has served the community for more than forty four years and we plan on serving it for many years to come. The past year wouldn’t have been possible without you guys and it wouldn’t be possible without you guys next year. We thank you for your dedication to the club and I am really looking forward to seeing some of you guys at PHYSICAL events, fundraisers, and meetings if the circumstances allow it next year!

Hey Bronx Science Key Club! I’m Shiya, and I’m so excited to be serving as your Secretary for this service year! I’m in charge of updating your points/hours, taking attendance, and writing meeting minutes-- but more importantly, I’m excited to get to know each and every one of you outside of how many hours you have! Never hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions, concerns, or just want someone to talk to. Seriously. I’m confident that if we continue building a safe and inclusive community, then we will be able to work together to reach this year’s service hour goal of 11,000 hours! In the meantime, stay safe, healthy, and remember that you’ve got a friend in me <33 4

Hello everyone! My name is Stephen Ogunbiyi, and I will be serving as the Treasurer for this service year! In my role as treasurer, I will be organizing fundraisers and making sure that we achieve our fundraising goal of $6,000 for the service year! For some things about me, I like a wide variety of hobbies, including reading, baking/cooking, and watching Youtube. I know that this year has been tough for all of us, and this next service year will also be a challenge as we begin shifting back to in-person. As we start this service year, we should all remember this quote, “helping one person might not change the whole world, but it could change the world for one person!” However, you have all been amazing during these hard times, and I know together we can make this service year another success!

CARDZ FOR KIDS 3/18/21

I volunteered in The Cardz for Kidz Event, where Key Clubbers created and sent handmade cards to children and seniors around the world. I really enjoyed being able to take my eyes off devices and screens to make cards with uplifting messages, drawings, and cut outs.

I felt that this event was more personal than other online events that I had done previously, as it was very open, allowing me to be creative, and was handcrafted, making it feel more unique. Knowing that my cards were going to those in need was very rewarding and I hope that those who receive my messages will feel appreciated and loved.

3/19/21 Project Implicit

Take surveys to help research

13

Yan Li, '23 For Project Implicit, I filled out a couple sets of surveys to help researchers in their research about social cognition. Each research topic (set) consists 4 6 surveys and each takes 3-5 minutes. It asked questions like what I do in certain situations, my opinions on certain types of people, and many more similar questions. There was also a part where I had to sort words related to covid-19 into two different categories (good/bad), and I believe they were testing how I perceive certain behaviors during covid-19. Overall, this was a pretty fun project to do. Each survey didn’t take up too much time so I could do however many I wanted to. I also think it’s pretty meaningful to take part in this because I could be helping those researchers go further in their studies.

Elaine Wang, '21 Project Implicit had a really unique method in educating others and raising awareness on people with disabilities. The task was to associate words and phrases that are negative and positive then connecting these words with signs and symbols regarding disabilities. It was very difficult at first because it was engrained in our society at a young age with word association. Yet their unique method really cements the association of good words with signs of people with disabilities. Through many repetitions I was really able to get the hang of their “game”. Also what makes it fun is that this is an accuracy test so completing it with my kfam and sisters brought out some friendly competition. Hope you guys try out the various projects they have! :))

BLANKETS FOR FUR BABIES 3 / 22 / 21

I recently participated in the Blankets for Fur Babies. I always had a large collection of yarn and could never figure out a way to use up all the yarn without it being a waste, so I used this event as an opportunity to shrink my collection. I wasn’t able to make as many blankets as I wanted, but it was still a very enjoyable pastime activity. I do think I will make some blankets and send them on my own time, and I am very grateful that the club found an event I can actively participate in! -- Linh Luu, '23 15

PAPER CRANES

FOR HOSPITALS 16

I participated in the paper cranes event on March 22, 2021! I had lots of fun making 75 cranes for the children in hospitals and it was just a very relaxing event to participate in! There were very simple instructions and video tutorials on how to make the cranes provided on the directions sheet, so I was easily able to follow along and make all 75 cranes. This event was awesome because it was a win-win situation with me being able to relax, listen to some music, and make cranes while this whole time I was helping to brighten a day at a children’s hospital. I hope to be able to participate in another event similar to this one! :) -- Chrissy Jung, '24

17

For this Paper Cranes for Hospitals (Letters for Rose) event, the theme was centered on the Japanese legend about how anyone who folds one thousand origami cranes would be granted a wish by the gods. The popular act of giving a thousand cranes to a person who is ill in order to hope for their recovery stemmed from the story of Sadako Sasaki, a Japanese girl who had leukemia inspired by the legend to fold a thousand cranes to wish for her return to full health. I was attracted to this event because by giving these cranes to a children’s hospital, it could lift their spirits and cheer for their recovery. Especially due to the current pandemic, many children may be isolated in hospitals with limited visitations, so these cranes could put a smile on their faces. Before choosing to complete this event, I didn't really have much experience in doing origami, so it was a fun learning experience and I improved by a lot. I decided to use a series of different colored papers, ranging from shades of green to different shades of red to multiple purples, in order to create a variety since they were being given to children at hospitals. This event was a really good opportunity to give something to make a child’s day better and it was definitely an enjoyable event. -- Kenise Lam '22

Events Spotlight: LTC!

21

The Leadership Training Conference is a one-of-a-kind event that I have had the honor of experiencing at least once before in my Key Club career. It is a great opportunity to learn very indepth about the functions of Key Club beyond the school level through the wide array of workshops and speeches. The workshops themselves also aim at training attendees for each officer position within the club, which are very valuable for those interested in taking on higher positions in the future. Being a district wide event, there is also the opportunity of meeting Key Clubbers from all around the state, and the conference usually plans several team-bonding and interacting activities for people to do so. My one LTC experience two years ago was in-person, unlike this year, and since being inperson allowed it to be more memorable and interactive, we should still expect the conference to be just as engaging and educational, allowing members to prosper within Key Club. -Shaon Burua '21
