"Maybe there’s only a dark road up ahead. But you still have to believe and keep going. Believe that the stars will light your path, even a little bit." -- Your Lie in April

Hello everyone!! Long time so see ;) I hope you've all had a restful break. I've spent my time baking and stressing for APs. But in any case, I'm glad that you've made it to this newsletter, recapping the first month of this new service year! This month started off light, but i know that our Projects Co-Heads (shoutout to Joslyn and Chrissy!) have a lot in store for you. Personally, I really loved reading the cards from the Earth Day Messages event. They were really refreshing, and we had so many submissions! As always, I've hidden a few symbols that represents our club. I hope you have fun looking for all the beavers, keys and pandas, and feel free to message me where you've found them! Yours in Service, Laura Pong '22

SUPPORT OUR TROOPS 4/18/21

Write uplifting cards to troops

I drew cards for the Support Our Troops event to show appreciation to all the soldiers who have been doing so much to protect us. I wanted to make the cards short and cheerful so they can be uplifted and encouraged from our messages. I think this event brought me closer to our troops and reminded me of how deeply thankful I am for these soldiers. -Rebecca Xie '23

EARTH DAY MESSAGES

I enjoyed this service project! While it is another card making activity, it was enjoyable to do during the meeting. The quiz was very interactive and it was interesting how they defined people, where I got champion! Writing the letters themselves was cool, as the website gave some personalization in it as well. I have always had an opinion on the topic of climate change, and it was nice to be able to put them into a service project, where it has the possibility to reach someone with power and make some possible reform. This service project makes me excited for future service projects, and I hope that Key Club is able to find more service projects that are equally interactive and fun over future remote meetings! -- Linh Luu '22

On April 22nd, 2021 which was also Earth Day, I attended the 7 Minute Earth Day event. It was hosted during a club meeting and members visited a website to make cards pertaining to Earth Day. Members had the opportunity to target their cards to many different people because you could send multiple cards. I believe I wrote two or three and one of them was something funny that addressed the general public, the other one was one for my elected officials that had the power to do something good for the Earth. Overall, it was a really fun activity as there was music playing in the background and I got to see wonderful Key Club members who were in the Zoom call. -- William Wu '22

LOVE FOR OUR ELDERS My parents introduced me to volunteer work at an early age. Starting from age seven, one night after Thanksgiving, my family of five would go to a place whose name I cannot remember and serve food to people whose faces are long buried in my memories. What I can remember, however, was the bubblish atmosphere characterized by heads of gray white hair and pinches to my cheek. And I certainly remember my mother looking at me from the food table, eyes filled with a proudness that one’s mother typically gives. That being said, when the building closed down and the nights following Thanksgiving were suddenly lonely, I was bound to be dejected. Upon reading the Key Club emails and seeing the “Love for Our Elders” event, I found myself retracing those elderly smiles of fake teeth. It had made me remember just how happy those men and women seemed, talking to some random seven year old girl who could barely tell the difference between “there” and “their.” Those smiles which had seemingly disappeared one year reformed and to this day, brings a light savor to my mind. I hope that the cards I create bring a similar atmosphere of excitement to those who receive them so that we may share those feelings of joviality. -- Ella Kwok '22

To participate in freerice, you only need to answer questions! By playing, you can earn money to pay for grains of rice for people in need! At first, it was 1 grain of rice per question. Later on, there was a change and you generate the amount to pay for 10 grains of rice per question! There are many categories you can choose to play from: Geography, Language Learning, Math, Science, and more! I personally like doing math so I chose from the Math category and did simple multiplication questions and some basic pre algebra! I listened to music I like (anime songs mostly haha) while I answered the questions and so, playing freerice was quite a relaxing experience! Not only do you contribute to helping those in need, you are also able to relax and enjoy your time doing so! -- Ena Lu '24

I had a lot of fun doing this event. While it was just answering some questions, I was able to learn some new things even if it was basic trivia. It was also a productive way of procrastinating school work, where if I didn’t want to do the assignment that was due later that night, I would do this event. While hitting the max number of grains seemed daunting at first, it was not that bad at all. This event was very enjoyable nonetheless, and it was nice to know I was able to help someone in need from just answering questions! -- Linh Luu

CHARITY MILES I participated in the 4/27/21 Charity Miles by walking for the Thirst Project Charity with the rest of our Key Club on our Charity Miles group! I was able to earn money for this particular charity by walking as many steps I could, throughout April. I walked by using my method of tracking steps and syncing it to the Charity Miles app. I went on more frequent outdoor walks than normal, to increase the amount of steps I was walking! In addition, I focused on staying more active within my own house, to mitigate myself from sitting at my computer for the entire day. I really enjoyed this event because I was able to help not only those in need but I was also able to keep myself healthier by staying active! -- Chrissy Jung '24 14

Events Spotlight: LTC!

18

My first and only time going to LTC was March of my freshman year. I remember lugging my suitcase up my Vallo bus and having to finesse it to the back of the bus so that I wouldn’t block anyone. I remember going to the auditorium right after my last class (as it was conveniently a half day) and seeing all the wonderful Bronx Science Key Clubbers in the auditorium. After what seemed like forever, the bus finally arrived. We put our stuff on it and away we went! I remember I had to bring my laptop because there were Key Terms (an insanely long homework assignment that involved explaining the significance of a lot of key terms that my AP World teacher in freshman year had us do) so I did that on the drive to Albany. I remember going to Playfair as well. There was this rockpaper-scissors tournament and essentially what it was was you played rock-paper-scissors with someone random and whoever won “ate” up the people that lost. So, after a few rounds someone who won all the games would gain a large following of people crowding around them. It sounds boring and stupid but it was actually really fun. We also played Assassin and I got tasked with “killing” Ms. Daly by clipping a clothespin on her clothing. However, she caught me the first time I tried to get her and I got killed by Waly before I got her. Overall, LTC was a fun experience and I highly recommend everyone to attend. -- William Wu '22
