THE KIWI:

Editor’s Letter: The Start of Something New It’s the new service year, and the board and I have been really excited to serve you guys; we have big plans and ideas coming your way and we are really ecstatic to start them. I, for one, want to change up the newsletters- maybe creating new editions. I have my sights set out on a newsletter everything month- with a theme to them, as well as, seasonal ones! The start of the new service year comes with change, but our core values stay the same. Caring is our way of life, and that has been a constant between us all- in our club and other key clubs. I hope that with me and the others as a board, we keep this mentality going and make you guys fall in love with Key Club even more. We hope to inspire you everyday, and we hope that you, in turn, inspire others. I hope we have a really great service year, and change the club for the better! Stay tuned for the newsletter, and everything else coming up! I’m looking forward to questions and comments and/or concerns.

Hello my lovely beavers!! My name is Carol and I will have the honor of serving as your vice president for the 2016:2017 service year. Firstly, I just want to say how excited I am to meet and work with all of you. One of my favorite things about Key Club is having the opportunity to meet such a diverse group of people. Though a Key Clubbers interests and personality vary from person to person, we are all united through our passion for serving the community which is truly amazing. As vice president, one of my biggest responsibilities is to manage the committee system. The committees are an essential part of making our club function, whether it means they create posters, plan fundraisers, manage social media accounts, find events, or create a scrapbook filled with our memories. As of right now, we are still in the process of appointing co:chairs for the new service year, so if you are interested in a position, do not hesitate to sign up! Whether or not you get a position has no direct impact on how much influence you can have within the club::so don't let this opportunity slip from your fingers. Hey Key Clubbers!! My name is Jenny and I have the honor of serving as both your webmaster and editor for the 2016:2017 service year. I’m incredibly ecstatic to be meeting, getting to know, and working with you guys: this is one of the reasons why I love Key Club; I am meeting a diverse group of people who all have dedication and passion to help others. As both your webmaster and editor, I’m working to make sure you guys know what’s happening inside and outside the club; through the website and newsletters. This year, my goal is to release a newsletter every single month, as well as create seasonal ones every three months to recap everything that we’ve accomplished in that season. I also want to consistently update the website with events and relay new information from both the division, district, and international level; and hopefully will be able to do this weekly. The Key Club family extends to not only our division nor our entire state, the Key Club family extends to different countries all over the world, and I think it is important to keep you guys informed as to what’s going on. This year, I also want to improve upon content on the website and newsletters, so if you have any suggestions, please contact me! The board and I are incredibly thankful for being given the opportunity to lead you guys; so get ready for hopefully the best service year yet!

Senior Net has to be one of my favorite events that I have attended because it is very personal. At Senior Net, you are able to help a senior citizen with any issues they have about their devices. I helped a nice lady figure out how to use PowerPoint, and what I love most about the event is that I am able to see the difference I am making. Although it is a small difference, the lady who I helped was very appreciative and I was able to talk to her and have a conversation about her. The Senior Net event allows me to know who I am helping and even have a conversation with them. This event is one of my favorites and I would definitely go back again!

Concern spring run

By: flora lei | member

The Concern Run is a 4 mile long run that takes place during the Spring season. This run raises awareness, money, and help to aid communities of third world countries all around the globe. With the help of over a thousand runners each year, Concern is able to provide the simple necessities of daily life to those who live in poverty. Some of these basic needs are water and meal for the families that suffer from hunger. This year, I participated in my first Concern Run. Besides the chilly weather and the difficulties of traveling to Central Park, I had an amazing time at the run. When we first arrived, we got to greet our smiling friends and got to pick up our Volunteer shirts. Then we grabbed a bit of warm breakfast and headed on to our assigned groups. Each group had a captain who helped us to break apart into smaller duos or trios. We were spread apart throughout the 4 mile run and helped by cheering on the runners. Date: April 9th, 2016 Location: central park Description: In this event, we are assisting Concern Worldwide in carrying on their race, the Concern Spring Race, which started in NYC in 1988. In the beginning of the event we played games that involved everyone, while waiting to be tasks. It was pretty fun. Our task was to guide the runners/walkers on the right path and lane and that no cars or bicycles get in the way of the runners/walkers. When it was over, the boys and some girls got competitive and raced back to the finish line.

Concern spring run

By: flora lei | member

My partner and I were placed right at the 3 mile mark. It was an honor to stand next to the neon yellow sign while people thanked us for motivating them. As more and more runners approached their goal of 4 miles, we encouraged them to keeping going by giving them words of persuasion. It was truly fascinating to see so many people running for a great cause and it was really inspiring to see families run together. This year’s turnout was amazing but I hope year’s Concern Run will be a thousand times better! I can’t wait to attend it again.

NYC FIGHT FOR AIR STAIR CLIMB

BY: KENJI YEOH | MEMBER

I volunteered at the Fight for Air Climb event at One Penn Plaza in Manhattan, New York on April 9th, 2016. Coming into the One Penn Plaza I was greeted with volunteers clad in polyester red shirts, signaling they were volunteers. With the cold and cloudy air behind me, I asked for volunteer registration, and one of the volunteers pointed to a hallway to my right. As I went down the hallway I already saw tables heaped with assorted snacks and information. Some table featured popular foods such as clif bars with flavours ranging from peanut butter to chocolate while other tables featured interactive activities and pamphlets about various causes and sponsors related to the race. However, these were for the participants, not volunteers, and therefore I continued my way to a room separated from the hall by a glass wall and two revolving doors.

Going through the doors I saw more volunteers, including some of the the Bronx Science Key Club members that had already gotten there. I went straight to the volunteer registration table labeled with a white paper sign and got my assignment. I was to be assigned to the waiver station, handing out waivers to participants to sign before the started the race. However, there seemed to already be people there already, so I just waited at the table. After fifteen minutes, I wondered what exactly I could do, and when I asked one of the event coordinators, I was directed towards another coordinator in charge of the front of the house.Although I stayed at waiver station, I was quickly assigned to become one of the greeters as people had already been assigned to the waiver station. Given a trusty and useful clipboard with the list of all the climbers and their bib numbers, I immediately went to work. I immediately began a simple but calculated process of greeting climbers who had just arrived. Afterwards I would direct the climbers to the registration area behind me, where with their bib number the registration process went by more quickly as a result. This continued on for hours as the crowds began to grow and fill the lobby of the One Penn Plaza. Soon enough there were announcements blazing above the heads of the runners to tell specific runners to get ready for the climb. The most exciting part was when the firemen starting coming. Some were already donned in their usually work attire, their firefighting gear with jackets and hats, while other carried it in bags, putting it on in another part of the lobby. As the last few runners came to us, volunteers began to clean up. I joined the crew and began dismantling and gathering signs in the plaza. As the last few climbers started, I already saw many people finish, looking sweaty and exhausted from their tenuous climb up the One Penn Plaza. Their fight for air was only temporary, but there are some whose fight for air will last until their dying breath. 19

SERVICE SPOTLIGHT : VISION WALK BY: MICHAEL CHAN | IP TREASURER & YINGCHAO HE | PRESIDENT

This was my second time at the annual Vision Walk, and it was every bit as fun as last year. Arriving at the Bandshell at 7:00 in the morning, I saw the tents that we would later help set up, the DJ, and the large number of volunteers from Bronx Science, Forest Hills High School, and HSMSE. We hung up banners labeled Registration, Check In, Tshirts, Refreshments, and Kids Zone at their respective tents. Afterwards, the volunteers were each assigned tasks and Bronx Science Key Club was assigned to be route marshalls/ cheerleaders! Our job was to direct the walkers toward the right direction and cheer them- simple enough. However, despite the cold, once the participants started walking, the shared excitement of the volunteers and walkers washed the cold away.

When the volunteers returned to the festival (beginning of the walk), we shared stories, played frisbee, and interacted with walkers until it was time to clean up and pack everything away for next year!

SERVICE SPOTLIGHT : VISION WALK BY: MICHAEL CHAN | IP TREASURER & YINGCHAO HE | PRESIDENT

Vision Walk is always one of the most memorable events to attend because the number of people who are passionate about helping others and donate in order to fund sight saving research is remarkable. This was the second time I attended this event and I had a unique experience for this walk in particular. Volunteers were required to get there at 7:30 in order to help with setting up the tents and stations for the walk. We finished setting up with a lot of time to spare, so we played frisbee near the play zone with whatever remaining time we had before our next assignments.

Eventually, we were assigned as course marshals throughout the walk and we were separated into pairs. Kenji and I walked the whole route in order to tape directions for the walkers. When the walk started, Kenji and I had different jobs compared to being the traditional course marshals. We were assigned to assist a blind couple for the whole walk. I was pretty astonished when I got to learn about them because one of them was a website programmer and they both came all the way from Long Island in order to participate in this walk.

They told us about how much Vision Walk means to them every year and how they appreciate the volunteers who comes to help out early in the morning. Despite their near 2 hour trip, they loved every second of the walk and it was really personally heartwarming for me because I have never done something like this at a Key Club event before. If I could summarize Vision Walk in one sentence, I would call it one of the events I always look forward to every year. I really find that the number of people who participate are special because of how passionate they are about this walk. I see why Jasmine, one of our past Key Club Presidents, loved this event with all her heart because of how meaningful Vision Walk is to her. I really look forward to doing this next year again.

SERVICE BY:SPOTLIGHT : DESIGN ON A DIME peter alegre | member & jonathan liao | member I attended two shifts, on 4/22 and 4/23, for Design on a dime held by Housing Works. Housing Works is a non profit organization that fights both AIDS and homelessness. Design on a Dime is a huge interior design sale, featuring items from top designers. The sales were then donated to the Hull Street Residence. Hull Street is a housing development project, that plans to house adults with HIV/AIDS. Shortly after finishing class on Friday (4/22), I met with the rest of the volunteers to go to the event later that day. We first checked in at the desk, and put in our backpacks in the breakroom. They also provided a shirt and name tags for us to wear for the event. The room was qutie small, but contained refreshments including pizza, water, and trail mix. After everyone settled in, we were instructed to bring anything in the various rooms to the front to be organized. The items varied from bathroom products, books, lamps, anything not attached to a wall and was just laying around. Eventually, mostly everything was organized and pretable for the customers now arriving.

The work slowed down as the shift went on, but there were still tasks to be done. As objects were bought, new ones from the back were put to replace them. Customers also asked the volunteers for help, regarding mostly about items. Close to the end of the shift, rugs from the various exhibit rooms, were moved and rolled up. Usually, heavy furniture was on top of the rugs, which made things difficult. Eventually though, the rugs were all rolled up and placed in one area, for sale the next day. The last task for the shift was moving sold items to a vacant room. However, there were 2 different sold tags, and objects with the other tag, were moved back. Moving so much stuff was tiring, but the 25 event was very fun! I was excited to see how my second shift would turn out

SERVICE BY:SPOTLIGHT : DESIGN ON A DIME peter alegre | member & jonathan liao | member The next event was much earlier, and I was feeling drowsy but excited for the shift. I did the same thing as last time: check in, store belongings, eat, and wear the shirt with my nametag. I was assigned to guard a section of the pavilion, so that no one would go pass it. There was less space needed as most of the stuff was sold yesterday. Today was much slower and relaxed than yesterday. I was with another volunteer though and we got to talk to each other for most of the shift, until I was reassigned. I was moved to do the same thing as before, which was guarding a section. Soon after though, a swing snapped from the wood it hung on after two men sat on it. The swing crashed down on a small desk, creating a small hole. I was instructed to get the rope off the broken wood and lay the swing on the floor. The swing itself wasn't damaged but the desk had to be thrown out. I and the volunteers dismantled the legs and threw the desk in a dumpster in the back. I continued guarding the section for the rest of my shift, but near the end of it, fresh hot pizza arrived. The volunteers alternated for break. But our shift was basically over. I checked out and received a 25% off coupon at Housing Works twice for the two shifts I attended.

Design on a Dime is an event in which customers purchase items (lamps, books, art works, vases, etc.) and we, as volunteers, help them picked already purchased items up or answer questions they had. The event started at 10 and went on until 5 We were basically working as sales assistants and it was a whole lot of fun because it felt as if we were professionals working at a store! Many of these customers were spending hundreds of dollars since the items were over twenty dollars for the most part but they all seemed happy with what they got, which made the event even better. I went to this event last year and the task was the same so it was a blast to do it again! They even bought pizzas for us which made was certainly a huge bonus :). Overall, this was an amazing event that I would love to go to again.

SERVICE SPOTLIGHT : march of DIMEs BY: ivy huang | member

April 24, 2016 was March of Dimes, a walk where everyone raises money and awareness for babies who are born prematurely or with defects. Founded by Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1958, the National Foundation of Infantile Paralysis. Premature birth was ranked #1 in the cause for deaths of babies; around 380,000 babies die each year because of this.

29

SERVICE SPOTLIGHT : march of DIMEs BY: ivy huang | member However, because of this organization, around $219 million were used for research and cures. This event was especially memorable because when I saw babies walking alongside their mothers at the event while holding tightly onto her finger, I realized that donating five dollars and walking three miles each year slowly adds up my support for this cause.

It encouraged me to continue attending this walk even after I graduate high school. I also got to experience inter-clubbing with LaGuardia and other schools from Division 8. Not only did I make new friends, but everyone around me got to meet new people from different divisions. I clearly remember running with Katzy up to the front of the walk where we met up with Cardozo and Francis Lewis Key Club. It was tiring but it was worth it.
