“No matter how hard or impossible it is, never lose sight of your goal.” – Monkey D Luffy

EDITOR'S NOTE Hey there! How you doing? Personally, I'm kind of sad because summer's over and school's starting, but also kind of excited. As with literally everything, in person Key Club meetings are so much more fun than virtual, and in person school in general has been something I'm really missing. It's going to be a challenging year, for the seniors who have to transition back to high intensity in person schooling during college season, and for everyone who hasn't even completed a full school year at Bronx. But! We'll all make it, and as always, we'll always have our Key Club community here to support each other. See you soon :)) Laura Pong '22

Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival

The Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival was amazing! It was my first time attending this event and I was lucky enough to have come with a handful of friends. During the event, I was working on the land side so we, the volunteers, helped set up booths, deliver items, and direct visitors to where they needed to go. My friends and I stood together in parking spaces to instruct incoming visitors where they could park; during those slow moments, we found delight in interacting with other Key Club members from other schools on our

volunteer site. Later on, we were given pizza for lunch and an opportunity to explore the festival for ourselves. We saw a few performances such as a Chinese classical orchestra and a lion dance! Surprisingly, the entire event had lasted ten hours, but with friends, time flew by rather quickly. After the event, my friends and I went to the night food fair also located in the park and had a delightful time. I’d definitely recommend this event for any Key Clubbers, although it was hot, we were given plenty of refreshments and cool opportunities to help out! -- Anny Chen '23

I participated in the Under the K-Bridge Event. While I did get lost trying to get there, I did have fun in the park clean up. I never experienced pulling out weeds before, so it was a learning experience in doing so. In addition, I also helped pull out thorny weeds, which the people I participated in had trouble in doing, so it was also a mild ego boost I got during the event :D I’m more enthusiastic and excited about park cleanups now! -- Linh Luu '23

NYC ANIM CEN

The NYC Animal Care Center event was very fun to participate in! The objective of this event was to draw portraits of an abandoned animal on the Animal Care Centers of NYC website, include their name and ID on the portrait, and the center will use the portrait to help advertise for the animal’s adoption. All the animals on the website were adorable, and it was a pleasure to help them! Although my drawing skills aren’t that good, it was exciting to help these animals find a home by drawing them a little portrait. After the event, I got to share my drawings with a few of my friends who also participated in the event; we were all hopeful that these animals would find a new home with our help. All in all, it was a wonderful event to take part in; I'm glad to have helped these animals in such a unique way and I look forward to future events like this one! -- Anny Chen '23

PROJECT SIDEWALK For this event, I was able to virtually explore streets and label problems on the streets that could pose a threat to those in wheelchairs, such as missing curbs, narrow sidewalks, and much more. This event was memorable because I was able to help people in an entirely different place (I mostly did the exploring in the Seattle area) through my computer. It also made me aware of a prevalent issue, which is that many places are near or completely inaccessible to those in wheelchairs. -- Adam Sultan '23

CHARITY MILES

16

Honestly I love doing Charity Miles since it's such a nice way to be giving to a charity while also being able to keep track of how many steps or what distance you went in a day. This time around was for the Thirst Project and it's pretty easy to do, you pick a charity and then you just make some movement (walking, biking, hiking, etc...)! For someone who's normal day involves a decent amount of walking it's a pretty convenient and simple way of giving back. I've found that after some time it can become a bit of a one-person competition to see which days I can do more steps :) It's always fun to be a part of Charity Miles and help out however we can. -- Molly Quito '22

MARKET GAMES AND ACTIVES In person events are finally back, so I knew I had to immediately sign up for The Market Games and Activities Event. As the project captain of the event, I was looking forward to meeting new members and spending some time playing soccer and mini games with little kids. When we arrived at the playground, my friend Eva and I were in charge of making a scavenger hunt for the kids. It was actually pretty difficult trying to come up with clues that both rhymed and made sense for the children. In the end, however, the kids were able to complete the scavenger hunt in a shorter amount of time than it took Eva and I to make it. To be honest, I don’t know if that means we did a good job or not, but the kids seemed satisfied with their surprise back to school prizes at the end of the hunt. Overall, I am really happy that I was able to attend this event and make some new memories with the members. This day truly reminded me of how much I love in person events. -- Jessica Alonso '22

TD Five Borough Bike Tour The TD Five Boro Tour was an event where Key Clubbers, volunteers, and staff came together to organize the Astoria Park rest station for the bikers participating in the marathon. The rest station was where bikers could stop for a moment and recharge their energy before heading back on the route. We organized the food and drinks so the bikers could grab them and go as well as cleaned up trash afterward. I had a ton of fun participating in this event because I’ve made amazing new friends and got to be a member of a small team managing the station. -- Rebecca Xie '23

FreeRice Free Rice is an event where you just answer easy questions to donate rice to those who can’t afford food. Each question answered raises approximately enough money for 10 grains of rice. This event is super easy and pretty fun to do. I remember one day I was bored and didn’t really feel like doing anything, so I just opened up free rice and answered some questions to pass the time. I had some music in the background and was just chilling and doing free rice. Free Rice is an amazing event that is fun to do and makes you feel good since you know you are helping out those who are not as fortunate. -- Henry Yu '23
