KEY CLUB BRONX SCIENCE NEW YORK DISTRICT DIVISION 11
August Edition
The Kiwi
NEW HEIGHTS. NEW FEATS.
Message from the Editor Hi Bronx Science Key Club! The end of summer is nearing! June and July has been absolutely phenomenal - whether it be by raising hundreds of dollars for our district project(s) or accumulating hundreds of service hours we've got a great start on the new service year. Let August be the final weeks where you get to leave your mark in summer and do what you love most while you still have the time! In this issue of The Kiwi, you will be able to witness how Bronx Science Key Club allows for its members to enjoy and try new experiences. A major highlights of this month would be our annual Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival. Speaking from experience, volunteering for a straight 24 hours (and not sleeping for 48 hours) was one of my most memorable experiences at at event. It was here, at the Dragon Boat Festival, where I got so much closer with some of my best friends in the club Hugh-Jay, Aaron, Peter, Ryan - and got to know new Key Clubbers such as Joseph or Daniel. Flip through this Issue to learn more about how thrilling events like these are. As days pass by, school is right across the corner. Get outside of your house like I did - and make some memories that you'll always remember. Events (and fundraisers) are amazing places where you can enjoy new experiences with your best friends. Join Bronx Science Key Club in the Summertime as we accomplish great feats in our community and bond with each other as a family. Nothing gets realer than this! Yours in Service, Fahad Nabi

EDUCATION
AUGUST'S PRESIDENT PROJECT
Get the facts about education in developing countries and how it affects children and adults. In 2014, 61 million children of primary school age were not enrolled in school. Girls make up 53 percent of the global population of children out of school. Thirty-nine percent of the worldwide poor have no formal education at all. 15 million girls of primary school age will never have the opportunity to learn to read and write in primary school, compared to about 10 million boys. Forty-seven percent of the 32 million girls who were out of school in 2014 are expected to never go to school, compared with 35 percent of the 29 million boys. One in six children in low and middle income countries will not complete primary school in 2015. How can you help? Raise Awareness, Donate, and become an active citizen in your community. Summer Streets is an annual celebration of New York City's most valuable public space — its streets. Every year, Summer Streets opens up nearly seven miles of NYC streets on three Saturdays for everyone to play, run, walk and bike. Summer Streets is a community event held for 3 consecutive to encourage the public to engage in physical activity in this era of technology and convenience. It amazing to see the scale of this event and the number of people that attended. There was so much energy in the people when participating in the vast array of activities. Given such a large event, volunteers were vital to making sure everything runs properly. I was assigned as a cross guard, where a single screw up could mean an accident between cars and bikers/runner and could cause significant delays. You could feel the importance and pressure of my position. But at the end of the day,

when I got the opportunity to engage in the activities the event had to offer, I got to experience the fun as well as the feel the surge of energy that was similarly felt by the participants earlier. It all pays off when you know you played a part in someone's amazing day. Summer Streets was an event like no other - I can't wait to come back next year!
Summer Streets was a three day event where a portion of New York city is closed to allow both kids and adults to enjoy summer within the city. During the first day at the event I helped at the water slide, they needed people to help carry back the rings after people slid down. Although it was repetitive walking back and forth, it was fun to watch people slide down and sometimes wipe out because the slide wasn't slippery enough or they weren't sitting properly. Towards the end of the day, the organizers  allowed us to slide down the slide since we were all working so hard. During my second day at the event, it was extremely hot. My friend and I helped out the New York Liberty's tent, where we helped interested people to sign up to be informed about the team on Ipads, or if they came just for the free stuff. It was fun talking to many people and finding out they were on vacation and just happened to be nearby, and would come back next year to visit again.

McDonalds B-Boy Royale
August 26th, 2017
BBoy Royal was a dance battle between the best break dance crews in New York. At BBoy Royal I did many things. First I went outside to hand out flyers and convinced people to come to the dance battle. Then I delivered the ice to fill the cooler for the drink. One of my most important jobs was to escort the VIP guests and check in on the seating arrangements. In addition to all that, I was able to help out at the front desk by watching over merchandise and escorting those who came late. BBoy Royal was unreal to me. I had such a good time that night. As a break dancer myself, I was really hyped to see famous dancers like Crazy Legs in front of me. Not only did I get to witness an amazing battle and see some of my idols, I was able to volunteer with my friends and introduce them to one of my hobbies. I’m the end, we got to keep all the crates of left over soda and a bunch of free shirts.

New York City Xavier Soup Kitchen
Xavier Soup Kitchen was by far one of my favorite Key events. It was an event in August where volunteers helped run a soup kitchen for the homeless in the area. It was held in the basement of a church in downtown Manhattan. Volunteers helped with everything from slicing and buttering bagels, cooking rice, serving food, rinsing the pots, and a bunch of other tasks. There were many things that made this event really special. When we were starting off, one thing that definitely struck me was how nice the other volunteers were. While buttering bagels, we met a couple who had come all the way from New Jersey just to help out. The scale of the soup kitchen was also really awe-inspiring. To see all these people get a meal, and more importantly be affected by the soup kitchen was really special to me. It was also an event where I felt I really was impacting change due to the fact that we were so involved in the whole process of helping out. This event was one that was really worthwhile to me and one I still vividly remember.

For one, when it comes to your work don't be afraid to ask for help! You can't do everything by yourself! With that being said, if there's someone who's willing to help you - perhaps invite them to a cafe or meet up (preferably before an event so you can drag them and introduce them to Key Club haha)!
