Service Events National Public Lands Day Grace Sue, Key Club Member

On Saturday, 10 Key Club members attended the National Public Lands Day Project at Riverside Park and met with two members of the Riverside Park Conservancy. It was a sunny yet breezy day, comfortable weather for volunteering. The goal was to create a grassy patch of land near the Hudson River because the area had been destroyed and eroded due to the effects of the Sandy storm back in 2012. We carried a large roll of burlap sack, unrolled it and then divided the sack into two even parts using a pair of scissors. Unfortunately, we found out that some of our members do not know how to cut things using scissors. This burlap sack material was to be placed over a patch of land that only had sparse patches of grass. After the burlap sack was placed over the area, we divided into two groups. One group was responsible for wheeling in piles of dirt into the area of burlap while another group was responsible for evening out the soil. One small person (also known as me) had some trouble wheeling in the piles of soil because that person was weak. After this process was completed, we layered on another piece of burlap over the soil and we added another layer of soil onto the burlap fabric. After that was completed, we distributed grass seeds over the soil and the water sprinklers were placed on the center of the patch of soil (but the water sprinklers actually didn't work). Finally, we helped build a fence around the new patch of soil. The project was fun yet tiring (at least for me), however all were happy in the end and we all learned something new about our environment (that the Hudson River isn't very blue) and the harsh effects of the storm Sandy. We were all glad to contribute to this fun experience, to help in sustaining our environment, and to take selfies along the coast of the Hudson River.

Divisional Updates Fall Rally Calvin Chu, Dedicated Key Club Member On September 28th 2014 Fall Rally was taking place in Stuyvesant High School. I found that this event was an exciting way to make new friends, and I had a great time going. I met so many new people from my school and from other schools and I was able to learn a lot more about Key Club. Going to the workshops made me want to strive for a higher position in Key Club. This event made me more comfortable with others. I used to be this shy kid who wouldn't even say hi to anyone, and yesterday I learn to be a leader you must show a good example to everyone else. This caused me to believe I should be more social and maybe others will think of me as a good example and imitate me so everyone could be more friendly. I think the time for this event was worth going to, and I would encourage anyone who has second thoughts on going to attend.

For the Month of September, Jonson Jin 16' In a club as large as our own, it is important to recognize those who are dedicated, and those who go above and beyond the call and role of a member. That is why it is vital we recognize a familiar face in the crowd during various Key Club meetings and events.

"Being a member from his sophomore year, Jonson shows great dedication for the Bronx Science Key Club. Always coming to as many events as he can, he is almost never late, bringing along a work ethic like no other. Balancing multiple Advanced Placement classes while maintaining a good standing in Key Club, he has also made a huge impact on the Divisional level. His actions helped to make the Sports Tournament possible, resulting in over $300 in profits. Jonson shows the spirit of a true Key Clubber on every level." - Kenji

"Jonson is dedicated, generous, and caring. He'll try his best to make you smile when you're feeling down. Jonson's outgoing characteristic also makes him someone who's great to talk to." - Yingchao

"Without a doubt, Jonson embodies every characteristic of a great Key Club member. Not only is his dedication evident in his participation, it shows every time he talks about the club. It’s been amazing to see him grow as a Key Clubber and I’m so proud to be his friend." - Mona

"As a member who showed up out of nowhere, although I knew him pretty well before he joined Key Club, Jonson has displayed many leadership qualities already. Going to many events and interacting with many of the new members are just some of the things that he does very well. I am very proud of how far he has come in this community, on a club and divisional level." - Timmy

"He's always really enthusiastic about each event. He really puts himself out there. Whether he has to put in physical strength or he has to shout out loud, he's up for it. It is very motivating and it gets you to be lively too." - Shatila
