“You need to accept the fact that you’re not the best and have all the will to strive to be better than anyone you face.” -- Roronoa Zoro

EDITOR'S NOTE Hi all! We've made it through the first month of 2022! It feels like this month has lasted forever, from the uncertainty in school, to college apps, to Omicron. I'm just glad that it's over, and that our Key Club has stayed strong throughout. Speaking of Omicron, we unfortunately had to cancel all in-person events and induction due to safety concerns (hello letter-writing events!). But! This February has plenty of in person events for those missing the community :) See ya! ~Laura Pong '22

Dream Lab Through Dream Lab, I was able to use the computing abilities of my phone to power the calculations of data for cancer cures. There are different types of research projects from all around the world you can select to power. For instance, I supported the project of finding better and faster ways to uncover new treatments against COVID-19. Another project that is available is “Cell Identity Hunter” which looks to characterize the tumor ecosystem and the relationship between the immune system and tumor cells for curing breast, colon, and lung cancer. Personally, it was truly incredible to see how great an impact a small act can have. As a result, though the app is typically used while you are sleeping (i.e. when you are not on your phone), I used it throughout the day, crunching 94 lifetime calculations. I have really enjoyed participating in this event and am glad to be part of these life saving projects, even if it is in small ways. -- Abigail Choi '24

Lockdown Letters Hello! I wrote 10 letters for the Lockdown Letters event on 1/8, and it was something I appreciated greatly since I was able to show my thanks to all for front-line healthcare workers who have to work day and night to beating the virus quicker. My mom is a healthcare worker, and many times, she has to work more than 24 hours at a time, and she comes home super exhausted, so I know its difficult for everyone affected and involved right now. Although everyone around the globe has to work together to safely get the mask off our faces, I was glad we were able to show our gratitude this one time to those working the hardest. -- Pritish Anand '23

Writing Wonders Organization For this event, I wrote letters and created some posters with quotes for the Healthcare workers, who risk their lives every day to save others’ lives during this pandemic. Recently, one of my friends got COVID-19 and went to an emergency room because he couldn't breathe. But now he is recovering, so I am immensely thankful to the healthcare workers who saved his life. I always wanted to thank the healthcare workers because without their sacrifice, a lot more people would have had to go through the sorrow of losing their loved ones. I am so grateful for their hard work that saved so many precious lives. For this event, I also wrote letters to the children who are fighting diseases. I always wanted to tell the kids in hospitals that I am so proud of them for being so strong and resilient. I really wanted to tell them that one day, they will be able to live a life doing everything they want! This event was such a meaningful event because it made me realize how grateful I should be for being well and healthy and for those who make that possible. -- Jeongwon Lee '23

Even though I miss having in-person events, this kind of event makes me love having virtual events. I LOVE doing art, especially drawing, so this event was such a perfect event for someone like me. For this event, I made three coloring book pages in order to help East Side Elders create printable coloring books for seniors to have a fun activity to pass their time. I used a drawing app called Procreate to make the designs and used reference pictures from Pinterest. I felt so glad that I could take part in brightening up elderlies’ days during these stressful times by doing something I love. I love both drawing and helping people in our community, so this event made me immensely happy. :) I wish we could have more events like this for the people who love arts like me! I hope the coloring book pages that I made help the elders have a fun time, forgetting about the stress that comes from isolation during the pandemic. -- Jeongwon Lee '23

I had the opportunity to participate in the “Letters to Strangers” key club event. I wrote 3 letters, each one delving into different topics. At first, I started these letters thinking that they weren’t important to me as much as they would be to someone else. But as I began writing, I found myself spilling my emotions and getting vulnerable. I revealed things that I didn't realize were building up inside of me; it was nice that I was finally letting them go. Writing these letters didn't feel awkward to me like it would if I was actually talking to a real person. Since everyone is anonymous, you don’t feel afraid to share your thoughts. So as much as these letters could be important to someone else, they could also be really important to you. --Amy Sooraj '25

FreeKibble

I participated in the FreeKibble event that was due 1/30/22. FreeKibble is a trivia website where two questions are updated daily. For each of these two questions you get correct, you donate 10 pieces of kibble for dogs or cats. When I signed up, I was able to donate 500 kibbles and receive daily reminders, as you must play daily to get enough kibbles. This event was a really simple way to positively impact the lives of animals. It does not take much of your time; you simply need to be persistent and spend about 5 mins each day answering the daily 2 questions. I enjoyed this event because I love animals so I’m glad I was able to contribute to making their lives better. After answering a question, you can click to see photos or learn more about the animal indicated in the question. To an animal lover like me, it was really fun to learn more about different animals! -- Ena Lu '24

Letters for Rose

Letters for Rose is basically an event where you write letters to a nursery homes and the elderly receives said letters. This event is super relaxing and really allows you to express your feelings through a letter when you imagine you are writing this to your grandparents. Additionally, it makes you feel nice inside knowing that you are making someone's day by showing them a bit of attention and care. My friend Aaron and I did this event together, and it was lots of fun making these letters, decorating them, and just trying to make them as emotional as possible. This event added to my increasingly respect for key club as I really liked the idea of helping old people out. -- Henry Yu '23
