VOLUME 8.4 JULY EDITION, 2019

NO ONE CAN DO EVERYTHING BUT EVERYONE CAN DO SOMETHING

EDITOR'S NOTE

Hey guys! we're over halfway through our Summer! I hope everyone is spending their Summer wisely and if you have some time on your hands, make use of it and attend a event! We have our August Divisional as well as numerous fundraisers approaching so make sure to attend. In this issue you will find how our club spends their Summer and manages to have the time to chill as well as volunteer whenever they can. Make sure to continue to stay updated with us on our social media as the Summer comes to an end. Make sure to lend a helping hand whenever possible because every small act can make our community a better place. We strive towards our goal of 14,000 hours as all of you continue to volunteer. This issue contains all of your hard work over the course of July! This would not be possible without the help and dedication of every single one of you.

Yours in service,

Rachel Lin

The first time I went to a City Meals on Wheels event was during the beginning of my freshman year and I didn’t expect to be delivering meals to the needy. At first I was very unsure of going around and delivering meals to people’s houses because all the previous events I went to had all been inside. Nonetheless, Key Club has never seemed to disappoint me because the friends I made and the smile on people’s faces as soon as their meals arrived reversed any uncertainty I had about delivering meals events. For this event, I arrived after they gave instructions but the instructor was very nice and explained the process again. Then, we transferred to the room with all the packages of food and were given the addresses to deliver meals to families. After exiting the building, we decided to split into two groups so that we can get the task done quicker. We were all following the project captain and as she started to walk for over 15 minutes and over many hills I thought to myself is she lost? Do I have to walk more in this burning weather? But soon we arrived in front of two residential buildings and then the two groups split apart. As my group entered the building, I felt a sense of unity plus a sense that I can really trust these people. After we gave out the meals, we all felt a sense of accomplishment seeing all the fulfilling thanks yous and excited faces. Even though this City Meal event was more different than the first one I went to, it taught me how to trust people and work in unity towards a certain goal, which are two main core values of Key Club!

On July 20th, I arrived at the Mullaly Recreational Center. It was right before the hottest day of the year but luckily there was water for us when everyone arrived. We had a quick orientation, then we picked up lots of meals with a few copies of the addresses that we were assigned. We headed out to the apartment buildings after dropping off the meals in a minivan that drove them off first. When we got to the place, we picked up the meals and split up into groups. After happily delivering all the meals to the elderly, we left. CityMeals is one of my favorite events because I get to really do people a favor and it makes me happy to put smiles on other people's faces.

My first event was City Meals back in the beginning of freshman year. In hopes of revisiting the past, I wanted my first time being project captain to be a City Meals event. As soon as a key clubber arrived, I would sign them in. Similar to my first experience with City Meals, we started off by packing up and bagging the lunches. After being given a list of the addresses for elderly people in need, we all decided to split up with partners in order to distribute the meals more efficiently. The amount of gratitude shown from each of the clients gave me pride to be a part of key club. Although it was slightly intimidating to lead a group of upperclassmen, I ultimately met so many new people.

Xavier's Soup

kitchen July 7th

Written by Jessica Alonso Xavier Soup Kitchen was an event where volunteers of all ages helped the coordinators prepare food for the homeless and the poor. When we first arrived to the event our first task was to cut watermelons. It was a very funny experience because most of the volunteers were not very skilled at cutting watermelons including myself. Not only that, but it was one of the few moments during the event where we interacted with volunteers older than us. Once we finished cutting the watermelons our next job was to clean the dishes that were used to make the food. While washing the dishes, I was able to bond with some of the other key club members and talk about their summer plans. Finally, our last job was to prepare lunch bags. We decided on creating an assembly line while preparing the bags in order to be efficient. Overall, the event was a very nice and we were able to make a lot of lunch bags for the people in need.

COMMUNITY OF

HOPE LUNCH 07/13, 07/20, 07/27

WRITTEN BY MATTHEW HE

At the Community of Hope Lunch Program, we arrived early in the morning to set up tables and chairs. After that was done, we put cards with nice messages on the tables. Very soon, people began arriving and food was brought out from the kitchen. Some of us served the food and put them on plates while others brought it to the tables that requested the meals. After an hour and a half of serving food, people began leaving. We cleaned up the tables, then put all the chairs back where they belonged. It was a fun event and I'm glad I was able to serve meals to people.
