“Whatever you do, enjoy it to the fullest. That is the secret of life.” -Rider

EDITOR'S NOTE Hi everyone :)) How's your summer been? It's hard to believe that there's only a month left until the school year starts (but at least we're starting later!). How are you feeling about being in person? I'm kind of nervous and excited. We'll finally be able to see how tall everyone in! But on a different note, July has been a really cool month for our Key Club. We had not one, but two fundraisers! And better yet, one of them was in person! Hopefully the we can all be safe despite the Delta variant and slowly ease back into in-person events. There's going to be a lot! Yours in Service, Laura Pong '22

Bxsci x Stuy Summer Game Fundraiser 7/2/21

The BxSci x Stuy Summer Games Fundraiser was super fun! I was at work the entire time, but the plus side of it being a virtual fundraiser is that I was still able to attend! It was really cool that even people from HSMSE and Bayside Key Club attended, and I feel like I got to meet so many people through this fundraiser. Going from the Thirst Week Game Night to this fundraiser the next day, I realized how fun it was to be involved with Key Club on different levels. From being surprised at how our District Treasurer, Siddhaarta Venkatesh, won prizes at both events to laughing about how bad we were at Spyfall or how everyone wanted to drop out of the finals because we wanted others to have more fun, I was truly amazed at how this fundraiser turned out! This fundraiser was truly an example of how Key Clubbers from all over could come together to have a good time. While we’re starting to make our transition into inperson events again, I’ll always remember the good times we had virtually as a reminder of our resilience and good spirits as Key Clubbers. -- Shiya Lin '23

Care Kits for Foster Kids 7/3/21

In this event, I made care kits for foster kids that included a variety of supplies from books to snacks to stationary. These care kits will be sent to those in need of supplies for miscellaneous tasks, snacks, or even a simple distraction with a good book! These care kits will hopefully brighten a child’s day and their experience in the foster care system! -- Rebecca Xie '23

Braid Mission was actually a pretty memorable event for me because of how quickly I finished it. I remember this event being put up about two months ago in May, before being pushed back to July. But I was so eager to complete it at the time that I ended up writing all 30 cards in just one sitting! It was really relaxing because doing this event served as a distraction from the upcoming AP tests I had, and it also gave me an excuse to do something art related. It felt nice to doodle cute messages for other children who might’ve needed the support. While this is officially one of the last card making events we’ll have, I’m happy that I was able to help in this way during quarantine, and I can’t wait to see the impact I’ll be a part of in-person! -- Shiya Lin '23

SLC was like LTC in many ways, but it also wasn’t. For one, SLC was an international gathering of Key Clubbers. There were Key Clubbers present from the Caribbean, Kansas, and of course New York. It was great to see that there were Key Clubbers everywhere who were so passionate about serving their communities. During workshops, I had the chance to listen to really great speakers like the guy from Promise Cards who talked about losing his father and how little promises seem to mean now. Although I am now a rising senior and there probably won’t be a chance for me to attend an ICON in-person, I look forward to members and future officers having this opportunity and taking it to interact and network with Key Clubbers all over the globe. -- William Wu '22

Cards for the Military

Usually for card events, I like to complete ones that are simple and more of the artistic side. However, I decided to challenge myself on this event because it was one of the last virtual ones we would have before transitioning back into in-person events. From this, I learned that handwriting twenty copies of the same letter was not only extremely tedious, but also really hard. But at the same time, I realized that that’s what made these letters all the more meaningful for the recipients. For soldiers on the frontline who barely have any contact with the citizens they’re protecting, it means a lot knowing that someone took the time out of their day to write to them. I hope that whoever receives my letters will be as encouraged as I was after 12 that realization :)) -- Shiya Lin '23

During July 11th’s “Make Paracord Bracelets” event, key clubbers made paracord bracelets to send to troops and first responders. These paracord bracelets can be a major help in many different emergencies. This event was simple but very relaxing to do! The event did not require many materials and they were all very easy to obtain. I was able to get 15 bracelets worth of paracord and each piece’s ends were burned to prevent fraying. After letting the pieces cool, they were ready to be made into bracelets. The instructional video from the website was clear and easy to follow. Once I got used to the process, I was able to make the bracelets without much thought. It didn’t take long to make all 15 and they were soon ready to be shipped. Overall, this was an enjoyable event where I was able to learn a new skill! - Melody Jiang '24

The NYC Triathlon was the first in-person event since quarantine started! This was very exciting, in part because I had yet to meet some of our club’s board members, but also because the thrill of working alongside other volunteers always made the experience so much more enjoyable. Our duty as volunteers was to locate a bag labelled with a runner’s number, which contained their belongings, and hand it to them. It’s very simple in concept, but the teamwork required for it was complicated. Regardless, it was fun being caught up in the whirlwind of calling out numbers, dodging passing bags, and scrambling to find a specific numbered bag. On top of that, I had the great pleasure to interact with other volunteers, a valuable social aspect of key club events that I missed dearly! We had impeccable teamwork and afterwards, I had a great time eating lunch with my friends! I hope more Key Clubbers sign up for in-person events, it’s such a unique and fun experience; you won’t get these opportunities elsewhere! -- Anny Chen '23

On July 10, 2021 and July 11, 2021, Division 11 held its first in person event: NYC Triathlon. I was able to meet so many key clubbers from other schools whom I have talked to online but not yet face to face. It reminded me that even a year of quarantine still can not diminish the spirit of Key Clubbers. Over the weekend, we not only interacted with other Key Clubbers but also Circle Kers too. The NYC Triathlon is famous for promoting health, fitness, and physical activity. Seeing the runners inspired me to go outside more and prioritize my wellbeing. When we were handing out bags to the runners, they were all incredibly thankful despite running for miles in the heat. It was an honor to be volunteering for such a kind group of people and be a part of this event that is vital in New York City’s culture. -Loretta Eng '22 15

STYLE BOOKMARKS 7/18/21

I really enjoyed participating in the July 18th Style Bookmark event! These bookmarks mailed to the Promising Pages Operation Center in North Carolina helps them provide free resources to under-resourced children and families in their community. I had a lot of fun making these bookmarks, especially because I colored sooo many in just a few days! It was satisfying to see the end result of all the bookmarks lined up. Besides the end result, this event allowed me to make use of my summer to serve and volunteer in a relaxing and creative way:)) -- Chrissy Jung '24 16

CRAFT BOOKWORM BUDDIES

7/24/21

For the Craft Bookworm Buddies event, I used colorful pom poms to make Bookworm Buddies. These fun bookworms will be sent to Promising Pages, whose mission is to promote literacy in the Charlotte, NC area. I hope these reading buddies will encourage young readers who might be a little hesitant to read to pick up that book again! -- Rebecca Xie '23

I always have Charity Miles linked to my health app so that it collects any movement that I do. Since summer break started, I’ve had way more time to go outside, and the numbers really show that. Compared to the 15 miles monthly I did from March to June, July’s mileage, as of 7/26, was 25 miles. Some of this was from taking walks through the neighborhood to exercise and get fresh air, another portion was from walking around at a summer program that I’m attending, and the rest was from shopping with my mom. I’m happy for the opportunity to destress, spend quality time with my family, and donate to UNICEF through all of these steps! :D -- Ellie Wang '24

Origami Bookmarks

Making all fifty of these bookmarks really brought me back to when a friend taught me how to make them in fifth grade. By now, I’d forgotten how to fold them, but this service project was the perfect time to relearn. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always loved reading, and I’m happy that I get to contribute to an organization that helps kids develop their own love for it. I even made a few bookmarks for myself, so it’s a win for everyone! :)) -- Ellie Wang '24

19

Origami Bookmarks was such a unique event! I would’ve never thought of using origami to protect book covers, but it’s incredibly creative and an event I would definitely participate in again. I may even make a few more to use for myself! Each bookmark was quick and easy to create, making it an ideal project for anyone, regardless of their level of experience. Origami Bookmarks also brought the “book desert” crisis in North Carolina to my attention, and it’s important to me that kids all around the world receive academic resources to help them grow as students. Promising Pages’ mission does just that, and I’m grateful that our club was able to contribute to their cause! I hope my bookmarks help children in North Carolina foster a love for reading, as there are countless factors that make books so valuable. Events like these continue to remind me that even the smallest efforts can lend a helping hand to communities in need! - Chloe Yip '23

In this event, I just folded pieces of paper into this bookmark shape. However, the process was pretty fun to me. I did this during work when I was on break. I was tired from working, and making these origamis kinda relaxed me. I was sitting at my desk and talking to this guy who worked in the same room with me while folding the papers. The time went by really quickly and it didn’t even feel like a task I was forced to do. Additionally, I enjoyed talking with the man and just spending time with him. Doing these small events are pretty relaxing and can help relieve some stress. -- Henry Yu '23

I attended the Black Widow Movie fundra fun! It was our first in-person event of the unreal. The movie itself was pretty cool, b some parts I felt lost in. But the reclining was amazing, and the amount of fun I ha events! -- Li
