Editor's Note Hello Bronx Science Key Club!! Oh my goshhh school is going to end in a few days. :((( I don’t know how you guys feel about this, but I am actually extremely sad. Going to school was often stressful and tiring, but it was my only excuse to see you all every day. :(( But on a good note, Key Club is going to have a LOT of fun fundraisers and events over the summer!! Remember, Key Club doesn’t end with the summer!! Not only do we have our amazing annual fundraiser Water Wars, but we are also planning to have a tie-dye fundraiser, summer meeting, and even an AMUSEMENT PARK FUNDRAISER!! We just had an open house yesterday and Melody, Chrissy, Ena, and more members did such an amazing job promoting our club to so many incoming freshmen. In case some of those incoming freshmen are reading this, I cannot wait to see you guys at fundraisers over the summer and in the meetings when we are back to school! Key Club is the best way to meet new people and have fun. :)) Last month was a busy month for many of us because of all the final exams and projects coming up, but we still had lots of fun events and a fundraiser! For me, Night Nation Run and Japan Day events were some of the most memorable events I've gone to. Read my newsletter to see how much fun we had last month! I hope everyone had an amazing school year and even if it wasn’t too amazing, I hope the next school year goes better for everyone. Enjoy this newsletter and I hope to see you all in the summer! Warmest Regards, Jeongwon Lee '23 Webmaster/Bulletin Editor

TD Bike

5/1/

After meeting my friends at our usual meeting spot in Flushing, my friend and I set out for the TD Bike Tour event at Astoria Park. As we approached the location, we admired the scenery. Astoria park had not only tennis courts, but also a whole track field and exercise area. At the event, we were provided with free breakfast as well as two volunteer t-shirts. One of which had a Del Monte logo on it. It is now one of my favorite shirts. We set up tables and set up the stands. When bikers started pouring in, all the volunteers worked together to make sure all the bikers got refreshments and food. This included restocking the bananas, trail mixes, etc. I remember honey stingers being especially popular among the bikers. I also worked with my friends To make sure the drink stations were all working properly. We carried buckets of gatorade and water back and forth, getting somewhat soaked by some leaks in the process. Overall, the event was very fun and I had a lot of fun working with others and interacting with the bikers (they were all very nice people). -Joanna Xu '25

Japan Day 5/14/22 A lot of members went to this event, including me! It was definitely one of the most memorable events for me and for others as well. Let's hear what our members thought! There were a lot of different jobs at the Japan Day Parade such as being a banner carrier, handing out tea at the tea tent, etc, but the job I had was being a Happi marcher. There was a group of about 20 of us and we were given these red or blue Japanese kimono coats and colorful umbrellas. We had to follow these kid drummers and thrust our umbrellas from right to middle to left, or spin it according to the beat of the drum. There was horse poop on the road from the horses that the policemen were riding, and it was funny watching everyone avoid them. I saw a video on Youtube about the parade and someone was very off beat when we were thrusting the umbrellas and I got a good laugh out of it. We were all struggling to keep up with the music and taking glances at each other to know when to spin the umbrella. It was so humid out so I was sweating really badly, but it was honestly such a fun experience and very rewarding to see the people watching us so excited to see the parade. We also got to keep the colorful umbrellas and received a bento for lunch, which was delicious, so yes, you should definitely go to this event if it happens again! Emily Xia '24

I went to Japan Day (5/14/22) and it was really fun. I was one of the Happi Marchers and we had to wear all black, got to wear a kimono jacket, and got an umbrella. Although we weren’t able to keep the kimono jackets, we were able to keep the umbrellas. We did a very simple choreography and walked with the parade for around 10 blocks. What made this event memorable was how lively the event was. There were many people on the street, it was packed. I would definitely recommend other key clubbers to attend this event if it happens again in the future! It was very fun, you get to interact with new people, and you might be able to see people cosplaying as anime characters. They also serve us lunch which is always a plus. - Jessica Lin '25

Japan Day was such a fun event!! I was in charge of the Tea Tent– an honor because it was the most highly requested job at the time– but I honestly had no idea what I was getting myself into at the time. I came into the event thinking that I was supposed to have tea with the local Japanese elders, but it ended up being a lot of package hauling in the sun (and even the rain). But nevertheless, I really enjoyed my time! I think that part of being a Key Clubber means that you’re automatically going to become a professional at not just opening, but also breaking down boxes. And while there was only a handful of us at the Tea Tent, we ended up dragging so many other Key Clubbers in to help us out too! I met so many Key Clubbers from Cardozo, Bayside, and even got closer to some from our own school. From yelling at the top of my lungs to shoving armfuls of tea onto tables in the rain and even greeting people who had no idea I wasn’t Japanese– it was overall just a really rewarding experience!

- Shiya Lin '23

On May 14th, I attended Japan Day 2022! I worked at the tea tent and it was truly chaotic but a lot of fun. I got there an hour early and started setting up the tent with Shiya and some other members that were already there. We lined up some tea and set up the sign. When the time came to give out the tea, it became incredibly crowded and busy! The line for our tent was so long that we could no longer see the “Line Starts Here” sign and I had to call the person who was holding the sign to check that they were still there T-T. Soon, it became too much for our 5 person team to handle and when the marchers visited us after their shift, we ended up dragging them in to help out. The tent became filled with members from all over the city! There were people carrying the boxes to the tent, unboxing the teas, setting up the tea, throwing away the boxes, and giving out the teas all at once. There were at least 15 people at the tent all working at the same time. Then, it began to rain heavily. The tea boxes were all outside so many of us got wet getting the tea in the tent but it was still incredibly fun. When our shift ended after 5-6 long but entertaining hours, we received a free bento- which was really good! This may be my most memorable event yet! I got to meet so many people from different schools! - Melody Jiang ‘24

Asian Pacific American Heritage Parade This was a divisional event and Elaine was the only one from our club who went to this event. Shout out to her for being so courageous!

5/15/22

The Asian Pacific American Heritage parade was the second key club event I had ever participated in. Arriving at the destination was already a hectic start as I was unable to find a project captain or any volunteers from Bronx science. Frantically texting people from Bronx Science key club I somehow ended up as project captain. While it sounded cool, it had no direct impact on me as I never found other Bronx science members. The event itself was very self-explanatory, follow the group in the parade as they walked down the street, waving flags or holding the dragon. Along with helping with other small tasks when needed. Even if I was the only Bronx science volunteer there, I made friends with people from Bayside HS, Cardozo HS as well as Brooklyn Tech’s Outreach members. At the end of the parade, I had also helped buy Wendy’s frosties for members still lingering around. The event is a very memorable day for me and really shows how Key club builds a safe community for each other to interact with and befriend students even from other schools.

NYRR Race - Coney Island 5/21/22

The Coney Island NYRR Race was the second marathon related event I attended, and it was super fun. My job was basically unloading the baggages that runners had checked-in from the UPS trucks, then sorting them by number. It was a long and tedious process, but definitely gave a lot of fulfillment when completed. What made this event memorable was definitely being able to socialize with my friends, meet new people, and the satisfaction handing the baggages back out to the runners who had finished their races, knowing the amount of time and effort it took to help sort them out I strongly encourage any Key Clubbers to sign up for future NYRR Race events. Although usually they tend to be really early, it’ll turn out to be really worth it, as you get to enjoy socializing while helping others at the same time. Which, in the end, I think is the whole point of being part of Key Club: to have fun while doing your best to contribute to the community.

Night Nation Run NYCStand Up 2 Cancer 5/21/22

I attended the Night Nation Run and it was a super fun event where people would buy a ticket and help raise money for cancer! We were able to help out with a variety a jobs such as handling registration and cash, handing out and sorting equipment, and handing out water. As it got later in the day, it got busier and seeing people enjoy the light show and music was really cool. We also got to bring home a bunch of cool merchandise! Overall, it was a really meaningful experience to volunteer and assist so that so many people could enjoy the festival and support a good cause! -Junjin Tan '24

This event was on 5/21/22 and I remember on that day I was getting a haircut prior to the event. I also remember it being like 90 degrees and I was wearing a THICK SWEATSHIRT. It was not a smart decision… Anyways, once I got there I met up with Emily Guan (One of our Scrapbook Coheads), and she was also with another person, Elaine. We headed over to the tents where the event was located and we met up with the manager (a guy with a teal shirt and sunglasses). He taught us how to use these really tiny iPhones (iPods) and we began to sort through T-shirts/Tanks. Another school was there with us, Laguardia, and we assigned specific roles to each other. Laguardia being on the male T-shirts/Tanks, and us, Bronx Science, on the female T-shirts/Tanks. What made this event really memorable was when people started coming in and we had to register them, and there was just a lot of yelling in the tents for specific items, t-shirts, tanks, and drinks. It was very chaotic but we had a flow and we got to do our jobs pretty well. Sadly, I couldn’t stay late enough for when all the lights began to light up and glow, but it was enjoyable to have a synchronized system regarding our job. - Stacy Qu '25

Japan Festival 5/22/22 Another Japan related event!! This was a desert-themed event on the Upper-West Side. There were Taiyaki, Matcha flavored foods, and more!

Thrift Store Volunteering 5/28/22 HEY GUYS! Member Interview is back!:)) For this event, I interviewed Samuel Buena '23. This was his first event and let's see how his experience was!

Q. What was ur job at the event? A. At the event I helped to sort and organize different items in the thrift store, such as books, Tupperware, etc. Q. Did anything funny happen? A. The guy who ran the thrift store (very cool dude by the way) let us play with his cat, Nia. One of us accidentally interrupted Nia's sleep and shortly after, she pounced on us. No one got hurt, thankfully. Q. Did you like this event? would you go to more key club events in the future? A. Although very few people attended the event, the work wasn't overwhelming at all. In fact, as a small group, we got to know each other very well. I am definitely considering attending future key club events; as a first event, this was very enjoyable.

Puchheon Installation at Corona Park Building a platform pathway, meeting people from other clubs, and learning how to use drills for the first time made this event pretty fun! We had to install puncheons because the wetland lake preserve had a lot of mud, and we also cut off invasive plants. I learned what poison ivy looked like for the first time because there was a lot of it. At first, we removed the mud using shovels, and I definitely did not wear the right shoes for that. Next, we added wood and finally planks on the top. We would pass the planks to the front of the row where the other group arranged it into a puncheon. When it was time for screwing the planks in, most people learned how to drill a nail for the first time, and almost everybody got a try, so we were done pretty fast. After we finished, it was really satisfying to see the new partial pathway we built. There was also one person from Brooklyn Tech Keyclub working with us, and it was really nice meeting her. We walked together to the train before we parted ways. I learned a lot in this event, so I am pretty glad I went even though it was extremely hot and there were many bugs. Malika Toregeldiyeva, ‘25

May Fundraiser

Minigolf Fu

5/30

It was my first time wearing my prescription sunglasses, but I honestly made a fool of myself on the train to this fundraiser because it was too dark for me to see indoors. But even though it was scorching hot on this day, there was something about being next to the ocean and within view of Stuyvesant that made this fundraiser really nice! I had a lot of fun learning how to golf with Melody, Junjin, and Salwa, and there was also a Key Clubber in front of us who brought their parents to the event with them. They were all so wholesome, and I had a lot of fun throughout all of the courses! In the end, I lost by only 1 point to Junjin, but I’m still proud of myself since no one thought I was going to win at the beginning. 10/10 would go again! - Shiya Lin '23

Petition Set #2: Support The Military Memorial Day is in the month of May and it commemorates all men and women who have died in U.S. military service. The U.S. military does not only work hard to maintain peace but they also work to protect the country's population from threats. Even though the military sacrifices much to aid our community, they are stripped off of certain deserving rights that all people are given. By signing these petition sets you will have helped give back the support the military has given us. - Public Relations Coheads, Stacy Qu '25 and Sumaya Suma '24 Click on the poster to sign the petitions!

Petition Set #3: Tackling Domestic Violence and Abuse Domestic violence is a societal issue that affects a variety of social groups and has ramifications for both individuals and society. Domestic violence can also create long-term effects on an individual's mental health like depression and anxiety.
