The Kiwi: Volume 7.2 BRONX SCIENCE KEY CLUB MAY 2018

EDITOR'S LETTER Can you believe it's already May? Where did the time go? I'm very glad to say that the school year is wrapping itself up. While that does mean the arrival of the terrible tests known as APs this week and the slightly less horrible regents in June, it also means more time to go to events and spend time with one another. As for me, I can't wait to get to know each and every one of you more and share my love for service. In this issue of the Kiwi, you'll see how Bronx Science Key Club has started off this service year. As strong as ever, our members have already served hundreds of hours, greatly contributing to our service goal of eleven thousand hours. On behalf of the board, I'd like to thank you, the members of this club, because without members, we wouldn't have been able to achieve so much in such a short period of time.

The warmer spring weather has shown a lot more outdoor events, whether it be walks such as March of Dimes, or park cleanups such as the United By Blue Bronx River Park Cleanup. Besides volunteering, members have helped out by donating to charities such as Paws with a Cause and the Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation through our first monthly fundraiser. As we continue to progress through the service year it is important to appreciate those that have helped us along the way. Remember to always be grateful to those that offer you help in tough situations and give back to them much like they have done for you. The service of our peers is just as important as the service of organizations and our volunteer efforts.

YOURS IN CARE AND SERVICE, KATHERINE DOSS

CHOICE PANTRY

MANHATTAN

" Along with a few other Bronx Science Key Clubbers, I served dinner at Manhattan Choice Pantry in Harlem. When we arrived, we were handed hairnets, plastic gloves, and aprons. I’ve been wanting to go to this event for a while and was so excited… until I got assigned to wash the dishes. Although that was a chore I dreaded, it turned out to be really fun: scraping the trays and using the sponges. I would definitely go back and wash dishes again. With friends alongside me, the hours passed quickly and the dishes were washed with ease. At this event, I got to know other Key Clubbers and talk to them while washing the dishes and cleaning together. It was rewarding to see so many people slowly filling the basement lunchroom and getting fed. I would say that Manhattan Choice Pantry is one of my favorite events as it allows me to be a part of NYCP’s dedication to reduce hunger in New York City.

FLUSHING MEADOWS

"At the event, some of us were stationed at places throughout the race in order to cheer on the runners while others were either giving out water and bagels or returning the belongings of runners who finished. The music and people who went to the event made it fun because it was a really cold day." - Matthew He

CALVARY HOSPITAL BIRTHDAY PARTY

Calvary Hospital is the monthly event Bronx Science Key Club attends. After months of going, Calvary has become an event I look forward to. You have the opportunity to serve with Riverdale Kiwanis, Bronx Science Key Club’s sponsor. I attended Calvary Hospital on 4/8, shortly after attending Greenspace on 4th right beforehand. The twohour trek is always a constant at Calvary, but it’s always worth it. I get to talk to patients who don’t usually have any family or friends to talk to. I’m given the opportunity to reach out into their world and learn about their lives and experiences. Every time there's new people and a new life that you can positively change solely through your service. At Calvary, you don’t only talk to the seniors as serving cake and refreshments is an integral part too. It’s really rewarding to see how grateful they are for something as simple as a party. All the staff and Kiwanians are also incredibly nice, making Calvary Hospital a service project I always look forward to. By: Peter Alegre

Greenspace 04.08.18

ARTICLE by AKSHAY RAJU When we arrived at the site, the greenspace looked like a small abandoned piece of land with the beginnings of a park. It had stones all over, a small greenhouse in the back, and much of it wasn’t developed. I wondered, what could possibly be going on here?

Soon after, I realized the complexity of what was going on in this park on a corner in Brooklyn. When we first arrived, we were told to add leaves to large bins already half full with decomposing leaves. The event manager, a man full of passion and knowledge about the garden, told us that these leaves were soon going to be made into compost. Local residents dumped bags of leaves from the autumn so that they could be used back again as soil instead of ending up in landfills.

The event was really fun because Soon afterwards, we helped beautify the although the garden was small, there garden space by adding stones to line the was a lot to do and many problems to paths, moved around wood to make a solve. There were also snacks and it future playpit, as well as other tasks that was fun working together to make had to be done before the garden opens in this a better space for the community. the summer. I would definitely recommend this In the summertime, he explained, the event as it was fun, educational, and garden would be filled with people and an overall great experience. children playing around. They also had a greenhouse, which needed some fixing up "... it was fun working after a recent storm. We also learned about together to make this a the rainwater collection system and the better space for the importance of it considering the current community..." sewer system in New York.

"

At Purple Strides NYC, we volunteered for an organization called the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, and this event was dedicated to raising funds, which go towards research for pancreatic cancer and raising the awareness of this cancer that typically does not go treated until the later stages of its development. Most volunteers were route marshals, and we had to direct people the correct way. After the event was over, we helped clean up the park after the race.

The fun part of the event was actually seeing the people cover the distance and cheering them on. It was a warm day, and seeing people struggling and putting effort to cover the distance, either as survivors, or supporters, in order to spread awareness of this cancer, was really nice, as it showed that people, regardless of whether they were a survivor or supporter, can unite under one idea. This also made it memorable. A memory can easily be forgotten if there is no significance to it, no real purpose. However, the people walking in the park that day, sacrificing their time, did have a significant purpose, to spread the awareness of this cancer, one of the top five cancers in deaths per year in the United States presently.

VISION WALK BY WALY NDIAYE

ON

a sunny day in Central Park, numerous Key Clubs from across the city gathered at VisionWalk. These clubs ranged from Bayside to RFK to our very own Bronx Science, and each club was given a different task once we received our bright yellow volunteer t-shirts.

In the beginning, we helped carried bags of food across the park to a van with the words “Cotton Candy Clown” on it. After this, our club was asked to monitor the walk and cheer people on as they helped to walk and fundraise for cures for blindness. After about an hour of waiting to be sent to our post, we began to leave in order to find a good location on the route, and we ended up near the end. When the walkers began to reach us, we screamed and cheered for them and shook the pompoms that we had received earlier. After most of the people reached the finish line, we returned to our original location and helped by cleaning up the trash and helping put away banners. When we were completely finished, we talked a little with the coordinators before we left the park. As a whole, the walk was a great experience and made all of us more informed about retinal diseases and the cures that are being done around the world.

Brooklyn 5K April 15, 2018

By: Aaron Wu

On a cold Sunday morning, I attended the Brooklyn 5k. Last year, I attended the same event and I was excited to revisit it this year. When I arrived at the event, it was dark. I was immediately assigned to be the course marshal of mile three. For a solid two hours, I was in the cold, holding a sign and cheering incoming runners. When the race was over, alongside the other volunteers, we broke down the water stations further down the race, and packed them into a truck, eventually leading us back to where we started.

"However, I was glad that I went because of the cheery and optimistic runners I’ve met." It was a really early event. As it started at six in the morning, I had to wake up at around four because the commute to Brooklyn takes me around two hours. However, I was glad that I went because of the cheery and optimistic runners I’ve met. I was also glad that another volunteer, Dan, also went to this event; sacrificing his Sunday sleep and his energy to come all the way to Brooklyn to help.

NYC VOTES I

APRIL 21, 2018

was looking unusually forward to the event for a while before it began. When

the day came, I had no problem with the fact that I had to wake up early on a Saturday and spend a train ride that unexpectedly took longer than it should have. Being greeted with some pretty views of the World Trade Center and surrounding Manhattan, where the event took place, was definitely worth it.

Probably the most memorable part of the event was the very beginning when we were led by the coordinator into a room full of free candy, cookies, snacks, and drinks that were half gone before we left the event. Our task was to make phone calls to people from a given phone book and encourage them to vote in a “special election that took place the following Tuesday. The setting was pretty professional, and each of the volunteers had their own telephones to use and took note of how interested people were in voting.

"...it was certainly a good feeling every time I heard someone say they were interested in voting..."Â It was fair to expect many of the people to hang up before I got to finish talking about the event, but it was certainly a good feeling every time I heard someone say they were interested in voting, especially since before the call most had no idea about the election. It was such a feeling that my friends and I competed to appeal to the most people. The task was as simple as that. We made phone call after phone call until we finished most of the calling lists. Despite such a simple task, it was an event I really enjoyed and really recommend if possible opportunities occur in the future.

UNITED BY BLUE BRONX RIVER CLEANUP

By Edison Zhu

"Just as one is responsible for the cleanliness and organization of his or her own room, the human population, as a whole, is responsible for our collective home: Earth." This weekend, members partook in that responsibility with United by Blue, a merchandise store that vows to clean up one pound of trash from our waters for each product sold. This cleanup took place on the shores of Soundview Park and it wasn't simply cleaning the shores. United by Blue partnered with Bronx River Alliance to take statistics of the trash collected to determine the cause and source of the trash on the site. Middle schoolers, high schoolers, and adults were present at this event, ready to make a difference. Such a large crowd meant not enough supplies, which also meant that supplies were shared. In the two hours, I constantly had to determine who got to use the trash nabbers when it was my turn. What really drove me to go out further and clean more trash is the "Weird Trash" game, where we submit an article of trash that we collected that we thought was weird. A vote was then held to see which was the weirdest of all, and the winner got some sort of prize. The shores had scattered car frames and parts, so there were tons of interesting trash to collect. One person had even found a jet turbine. At the end of the day, we cleaned up 2525 pounds of trash and my submission of a car steering wheel didn't win the game.

RIVERDALE TEMPLE

On April 22nd, I went to Riverdale Temple Sandwich Making, but this event wasn't just about making sandwiches. When I arrived, we were separated into two groups. Half us went down to the basement of the temple to make sandwiches, while the other half stayed on the first floor to sort donated clothes. I ended up being in the group that sorted donated clothes. When I saw around more than twenty bags of clothes that were lying across the floor, I was actually surprised and amazed. As I was folding and sorting clothes based on categories, I began to think more about how something you may not want anymore may be valuable to someone else. Despite the fact that my arms were so sore after folding bags of clothes, I would definitely go to an event like this again. It was an experience where I know I was helping someone and had fun while doing it. Also, it was quite fun to adore all the unique clothing, especially the baby clothes.

DESIGN ON A DIME FRIDAY JUNE

5,

2019

ZHEN YANG HUANG I went to a volunteering event called Design on a Dime where the coordinators tried to sell donated items to raise a money in order to end homelessness and AIDS. I thought that it was a nice and calming event. I got to interact with many wonderful people who help support the cause. They were really wonderful and supportive. I had one pair of mother and daughter stay for the full four hours as they argued with the manager about switching the doors of the refrigerator around because they were mix and match. This was okay because I got to know that they were actually trying to support the cause even though they disliked the inconsistent design. I really enjoy talking to the pair. I also like how we were helping fight AIDS, a horrible disease that kills millions to this day. I really enjoyed the event and would like to go back.Â

Van Cortlandt Park Cleanup

On April 22nd, I attended the Van Cortlandt Park Cleanup event. This event was very enjoyable. When I first got there, my job was to clear the soil of weeds so that the stones would show. Then we had to shovel the dirt underneath the stones to make them higher so that they stood out. This way, the new flowers that they were planting would grow in a tidy area. I was then appointed to sorting out the compost bin. By clearing the compost of large twigs and leftovers, the park faculty would be able to use the compost to plant new plants for the season. Not only did we work hard, we were able to learn a lot about gardening. Who knew that there were more than one type of asparagus? Although the sun was hot and there were tons of worms and bugs, all of the volunteers worked together to accomplish our goal. I met a lot of new friends and was able to have a good time, while catching up with old friends.

march of dimes

The March of Dimes/March For Babies is one of the biggest events of the year and I am extremely grateful that I was able to take part in this three-mile walk. Millions of babies each year are born prematurely and this tremendous walk helps to raise awareness and money to help give all newborns a fighting chance. We arrived at the march an hour early but the streets were already filled with people. We received signs that we could fill in, answering the question: why I march? Every person had a different answer. It both warmed my heart and broke it at the same time to see the reasons why each and every person walked. Whether it’s marching for the health of their own child or to support others in this movement. The streets

were filled with thousands of people and numerous stands that ran up the sidewalks. Many key clubs from other divisions were there, making the occasion even more exciting. Once all of us were signed in, we joined our division and started walking. It was reassuring when I saw the signs indicating whenever we passed a mile because I was already tired to begin with. We held up our club/division signs and followed the crowd through Central Park and onwards. By joining in on this march, I know that I am taking part in an event that is bigger than myself. All in all, the experience is something I will cherish and definitely be returning to year after year. - Rachel Lin
