EDITOR'S LETTER It's finally summer! Yay! Congratulations on making it through the year. Now that school's not taking up our time, we can spend more of our weekends giving back to our community. Each month we keep serving more and more hours! I know we're going to hit our goal soon. Congratulations for all of your hard work! Keep going and we'll be able to achieve anything! There is so much to look forward to this summer. Whether you're volunteering every weekend, hanging out with friends, or just relaxing by yourself at home, I hope you have fun and enjoy yourself. One of the most fun parts of June was our

6th Annual Water Wars! Our gigantic water fight and picnic perfectly ended the school year and helped raise so much money for Comfort Cases. In this issue of the Kiwi, you will be able to see how Bronx Science Key Club reacts to the end of the school year. Key Clubbers are more dedicated than ever, determined to improve our club. Our four core values - leadership, character building, caring, and inclusiveness, are displayed in everything our members do. I couldn't ask for a better club.

WALTON CAMPUS MURAL PAINTING

By Noshin Shakawat :

The Walton Mural Painting event has been one of the most fun events I ve ever taken part in We got to help paint a mural as community service It didn t even feel like work at all However getting to the event was challenging The mural was located outside but enclosed within the school walls of Walton high school It took the group and I an hour of walking inside the school and around the perimeter before we finally found a school police officer that took us directly to the mural Once we finally arrived at the event the coordinators had us paint tiny details on such as outlining objects and cleaning up edges The event was honestly the highlight of my week just simply filling in the blank on the wall is calming and takes your mind off of the daily stresses of Bronx Science ’

DRUMS ALONG THE HUDSON

Even before the event, the coordinators had called us to an orientation to know our duties on the day of the actual event. After the orientation, I got to learn that Drums Along the Hudson was centered around a musical piece by a British composer which was going to be set up at Inwood Hill Park. So I was pretty hyped for helping out.

When I got there, the organizers were setting up. They were missing some supplies, so it was a bit awkward at first. Since the setting up started at 7, only a few people came in. But soon, the composer came and gave all the volunteers a sense of how he wanted the music to be set in the woods. We put in 24 speakers along a trail which he called an ‘iForest’. This was his first time doing something like this, which made me feel, I guess, honored? It felt nice to be a part of something new.

A lot of the visitors were confused of where to go due to the misleading posters. That was a bit stressful. Other than that, it was a relief in the end to see all the stalls and the stage performances run smoothly. For helping out, I also got to try out some nice chicken wings AT A DISCOUNT. Going to this event was really worth it. It took a while, but when the speakers were set, it sounded so magical as you took a stroll down the trail. However, one thing about the event was a bit flawed. The organizers were very vague with instructions. There were many confusions with Stuy Key Club and some volunteers from Disney, on what we had to do. Many of the people helping would take breaks without any notice.

F CA a l Ga

The CAF Gala was a very inspirational event. Each year, the CAF foundation helps challenged athletes to continue living on their dreams. It was so inspiring to see the struggles children and adults alike overcome to reach their goals. We helped sign people in, greet people, hand out gift bags to the attendees. It was really nice knowing that I was helping out a good cause. - BY PINKEY LAM -

NIGHT NATION RUN

BY DORA CHAM

Night Nation Run was an unforgettable night. At the event, I helped hand out flyers before the run started and seeing the amount of people that attended the event and just how excited they were was amazing. Shortly before the race started, my group went to the start line; we were in charge of controlling the waves of people who went into the race. Even though we were there for a god half hour, it was still fun because the music was blasting and we were just dancing around and having a good time. Afterwards, we were able to go into the race ourselves and the rave. The atmosphere was really vibrant and energetic and being a part of that was a fun experience. I would hands down attend this event, or a similar event, again!

Calvary Hospital Birthday Party

This month’s Calvary Hospital Birthday Party was my first one ever. It was a special occasion because the whole board was going in order to bond and get to know members of Riverdale Kiwanis together. We all got there before most of the patients were brought in. We spent the first few minutes talking to the Kiwanians. After a couple more patients came in, we dispersed and spoke to them. Though it was a little awkward being ignored at times, talking to the patients and their families was a truly rewarding experience. They had interesting experiences and were wonderful to talk to. After a little while of talking to patients, we sang “Happy Birthday” and handed out cake and ice cream. After we finished serving to the patients and families in the party room, I went up with one of the hospital workers to give cake to patients that weren’t able to leave their rooms. When everyone was done eating we cleared the tables and tied balloons on to the back of the patients’ chairs. When our work was done we spoke to the hospital workers and Kiwanians as the patients were wheeled out of the room. It was nice to see the happy faces of the patients and it helped me realize that it doesn’t take a lot to make a difference in someone’s life.

Egg Rolls, Egg Creams, and Empanadas Festival JUNE 17, 2018

The Egg Rolls, Egg Creams, and Empanadas Festival took place on June 17 this year, and it is an annual cultural celebration at the Museum at Eldridge Street. There, Jewish, Chinese, and Puerto Rican neighborhoods combine to make a fun event expressing their traditions. Games, food, music, and dance performances were included in the event, as well as many other side activities. There were many activity tents including dumpling making, yarmulke decorations, mahjong lessons, tangram making, and mask making. I had been to the festival last year as a volunteer, and I decided to go to the event again this year since I had a great time previously. When my group got to the museum, we were very early and weren’t sure what to do. We waited outside until another volunteer arrived, and we went inside to start our service.

At 10 AM, we were given our T-shirts, a briefing, and given food for breakfast in the basement. A bit later, when more volunteers from Bronx Science and Stuyvesant arrived, we began activity assignments. My trio was sent to the yarmulke decoration tent, where we were to help people decorate yarmulkes. In the first hour, we did not receive much service, mostly because it was still early. Eventually, many people were roaming the streets, and we started to help people in their crafting adventures. Many of the clients at the tent that I met were children with their parents. When the children asked for something, we provided it to them. We gave out paint, plastic gems, animal cutouts, glitter, and other art materials. Although the end results of the yarmulkes ranged in quality, the children and parents were gracious and thanked us for our help, and it was nice to see that we were able to make people happy on Father’s Day.

After working at the tent for nearly 4 hours in the hot tent, the second shift team finally arrived to relieve us. On the break, my friends and I set out into Chinatown to look for food, but we could not find the store that we were looking for. We returned to the festival and ate pizza and egg creams. Egg creams are drinks that are made of chocolate syrup, milk, and seltzer water, essentially making it taste like chocolate milk soda. After our break, we looked for work, and a volunteer leader told us to watch the display cases in the museum (which is a synagogue) and make sure no one touches them. We stayed inside the museum and listened to the programs in there. I listened to Chinese folk music and the art of Jewish prayers, and I learned quite a lot about the synagogue’s history, too.

At the end of the day, what really stuck in my mind for the festival was helping out at the yarmulke tent. It’s because that is where you directly interact with other people and truly understand what volunteering is all about. It’s about helping those who need it and contributing to the community actively. I will remember the boy that lived in the apartment right behind us, who made a yarmulke saying that he dislikes newbies in his favorite game Roblox. I would recommend this event for next year because you can watch Manhattan’s downtown community rejoice in the greatness of diversity and good food while making a difference yourself.

To me, Bronx Choice Pantry was one of my favorite events in June. The event is meant to provide families with food for healthy meals. At this event, we first restocked the pantry by bagging bread and placing them into a large bin. When it was time for people to receive their foods, a few of us left the pantry room to go to the waiting room to take orders. The rest of us remained in the pantry to grab all the food, based on a receipt.

Overall, I look forward to coming back to another Bronx Choice Pantry event because it was a very enjoyable event. I was able to have a good time with my friends. At the same time, who wouldn't want to be surrounded by food?

Pulmonary Fibrosis Walk

At the event, we first participated with setting up tables, unboxing energy bars, and inflating balloons for the event. We were then assigned to areas along the walk, in which we were given signs to hold and instructions on what to say to walkers. It was a fun event, and Kevin and I distributed noisemakers to children and we helped cheer on and occasionally take pictures of walkers. By Brian Luu

BROOKLYN

TAKES STEPS TAKES TAKES STEPS STEPS FOR CROHN'S & COLITIS

The event started really early that day but I didn't mind because I missed waking up early for events. When I got there, the people who were hosting the event were still setting up tents by a temple. We went to the check-in tent and they gave us and a few stuy kids volunteer shirts, and we started picking up garbage. Then we helped set up more tents and place items at each one. When people started arriving, there was music, chips, and coffee. We were assigned different tasks, such as holding signs by the entrance or giving out a small booklet about the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation. The people hosting the event gave speeches and sang songs. People participated in the walk and some of us cheered them on while others handed out water. When we were done the DJ played dance music and the event was over. BY MATTHEW HE

As social media head (SMH) of the previous service year, I was able to observe the spectacular amount of service each key clubber gave. I had the honor of being the communicator between schools and even between divisions. An important job of the SMH is to advertise and document events and fundraisers through digital posters and recap videos. With the help of the social media committee, I was able to show how service and family were at the heart of Division 11. - FLORA LEI

Being a divisional secretary was one of the most rewarding positions I undertook in high school. Through my 12 month tenure, I was able to meet hundreds of new people, be exposed to dozens of new events, and be part of the global movement for change. Helping schools with MRFs and other paperwork gave me an administrative view of key club that I would not have otherwise gotten. My favorite moment each month was reading the newsletter and seeing all those green check marks next to each school. Now as I am going off to college, I only regret not joining key club earlier. Having the opportunity to be the secretary for Division 11 was as much humbling as it was transformative. - SPENCER HA

Hey Bronx Science Key Club! My name is Eric Zhao, and I am the IP LTG of Division 11, and it has been a tremendous honor being the LTG of one of the best Key Clubs in the world. When I started Key Club, I was a shy and confused freshman. I would have never imagined that I would have fun in Key Club let alone hold a position. I have met so many of my best friends in Key Club, and I have had the opportunity to let my leadership abilities flourish. It has been a great year working with you guys and being your LTG. Follow your passions.

And a few messages from our past divisional members.....

Camp Science

Key Club members participated in Camp Science, encouraging incoming freshmen to join and explaining what the club does. - Akaneh Wang

Camp Science was a great opportunity for me and my fellow Key Clubbers to promote our club and introduce Key Club to next year’s freshmen. I loved being able to express my enthusiasm for Key Club along with others that had that same passion for our potential future generation of Key Clubbers. - Wesley Mui

I remember when I was a clueless incoming freshman, walking around the gym and seeing the Key Club table. I signed up, even though I honestly didn't know what Key Club was. At this year's Camp Science, the roles were reversed and I had the pleasure of telling incoming freshman about Key Club, promoting them to join and be active. The responses from some of the new freshmen really made my day and I look forward to seeing new members! Overall, Camp Science was really fun to be a part of. - Cara Leung

DIVISIONAL TRAINING CONFERENCE BAYSIDE HIGH SCHOOL

JUNE 16 2018 ,

DTC was honestly a lot better than I imagined. Although it didn't exactly feel like LTC, I got to meet people from circle K and attend workshops that will definitely help me in the future. I thought every workshop was pretty fun and useful but I could only attend so many. Going to "running for higher office" has definitely motivated me for next year! -Matthew He

Out of all of the Divisional Training Conferences I’ve been to in the last three years, this years DTC was definitely one to remember! What was captivating about this years conference was how much fun everybody had - whether it be during the workshops, lunch, or Keith’s presentation on anti-bullying. Not only did I have fun, but I also had the opportunity to teach and engage others in my workshop - which is why this years DTC was special to me. Hosting a workshop allowed me to connect with other Key Clubbers in the basis of a common interest or passion we had - which in this case was graphic and web design. I was able to simultaneously teach other Key Clubbers and learn from them during the workshop (through their questions!), which truly made my entire DTC experience a fun one. - Fahad Nabi

What was your experience like at DTC?

This year's Divisional Training Conference was my first DTC. It was similar to my experience to Fall rally earlier in the year but instead I knew a bit more about key club and the people attending. I found that the workshops at DTC were really interesting and fun, as well as the speeches and other activities that I'll miss until my next DTC! - Cara Leung

DTC was a fun-filled experience with an opportunity for me to meet new Key Clubbers from all over the city, as well as attend new workshops where I learned new things. In addition, we had a very inspiring workshop on bullying. -Wesley Mui

MEMBER MONDAY: JUNE 4 WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE DAY OF THE WEEK?

Thursday, because I either stay for Key Club or practice. Also, most of my bus friends take the bus home afterward so we get to talk on the bus and it's just a really fun day overall.

BRIAN LUU

MEMBER MONDAY: JUNE 11 WHAT IS YOUR SPIRIT ANIMAL AND WHY?

Hedgehogs because they are prickly and perpetually confused. They would also eat everything.

ARTHUR KUNTARAKORNKITI

MEMBER MONDAY: JUNE 18 WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO DO THIS SUMMER?

I'm looking forward to volunteering at different events around NYC and spending time with my friends.

ANIR NARINE

MEMBER MONDAY: JUNE 25 IF YOU CAN JOIN ANY MOVIE UNIVERSE, WHICH ONE WOULD IT BE?

I’d join sci-fi or fantasy without second thinking. If we could just forget about reality and instead have super cool powers to turn the world upside down, then I’m totally down. So the Marvel Cinematic Universe is going to have to be where I’m booking my next plane ticket. SAMAMA MOONTAHA
