Food Fair Rummana Afrin, Key Club Member "Get your chips, two for one dollar" I shouted out repeatedly in the crowded lunchroom. It was the annual Food Fair at Bronx science and as a volunteer for Key Club, I went around the lunchroom and tried to sell as many bags of chips as I could. The Food Fair allowed students to raise money for their clubs by selling goodies. It was a opportunity to work with fellow members and to interact with other students. In order to purchase food, you needed to trade in real money for yellow slips of paper. You then used the yellow slips of paper to "buy" food. Each member was in charge of a dish to sell and by working together we sold almost everything we brought! Not only were the members of the club ecstatic to be volunteering, but the event itself was upbeat. There was music playing in the background and many dishes of food that were being served. It ranged from store-bought soda to homemade curried chicken. The lunchroom went from its cafeteria meat smell into a candy land scent. The people in the cafeteria socialized with everyone. It seemed as if everyone had known each other since forever. The event helped me to become more social and less socially awkward. I got to talk with kids above my grade and they were all sweet. I especially enjoyed the part where me, Lucy, Minna, and two seniors debated with each other and Tried to persuade one another to buy our products. Honestly, it didn't even feel as if we were volunteering, it felt more as if we were hanging out. Not only that, but the event helped me to understand business. I learned about finding a balance when it came to price. When some prices were too high, we negotiated a price that would suit the two of us. The food fair was the first even I volunteered for and I am so glad it was. This event really helped me get along with the leaders of key club and it helped me become closer with other students. The fair was worth the time and work it took and I'm glad I was able to be a part of it. I can't wait until next year, when the food fair comes back.

NYC Mission Society Toy Drive Wrapping Michele Chen, Key Club Member As I exited the train station on December 13th, 2014 and started walking towards the building of the NYC Mission Society Toy Drive Wrapping event, I started questioning my choice. I said to myself, “I can’t even wrap gifts. The kids who received my wrapped gifts would be horrified at my wrapping. I’m a terrible wrapper, but it was too late to back out now.” The Bronx Science Key Club, along with a few other volunteers entered a dance room with large bags filled with unwrapped gifts lining the perimeter of the room. I grabbed a bag labeled “Girls 7-11” and sighed with relief. The toys inside were in boxes and boxes are by far, the easiest things to gift wrap. After I was done gift wrapping all of the toys in the bag, I grabbed a bag with a label stating that it was toys for young boys. Inside were stuffed animals - not boxed toys. Surprisingly, wrapping stuffed animals turned out to be a lot of fun. The people at my table and I laughed over our poorly wrapped stuffed huskies because they turned out looking like blobs. After the first attempt of wrapping the stuffed huskies, we figured out a better way to wrap the stuffed animals. By the time all of the stuffed huskies were wrapped and ready to be given out, the gifts still looked like blobs, but considering that it had no edges, they were pretty good blobs that I will gladly say that I’m proud of. Thanks to the help of Bronx Science Key Club, a majority of the gifts were wrapped within the first session. The event was divided into 3 sessions, a morning, an afternoon, and a later afternoon. By the middle of the second session, most of the presents were wrapped. When it came time for the third session, there was no more work that needed to be done. All of us left the dance room and hung out in another room eating the cookies, tangerines, and sandwiches provided. It was a great way to end a successful gift wrapping session. Turns out, my gift wrapping skills aren’t half bad. In fact, all of our wrapped presents turned out pretty nice.

Jingle Bell Run/Walk

Spotlight

Tenzin Amdo, Dedicated Key Clubber Arthritis is the inflammation of joints within the musculoskeletal system of the human body. The Jingle Bell 5K Run/Walk is a 5K Run/Walk to benefit the Arthritis Foundation. On December 6th, I volunteered at the Jingle Bell 5K Run/Walk, which took place at Riverside Park. During this event, I was able to encourage those running to stay motivated and show them the direction of the end of the run. It was one of my last events of 2014 and was very enjoyable as I was able to do something productive and valuable while bonding with my friends. My friends and I sang holiday songs such as “Jingle Bells”, “Frosty the Snowman”, and “The Twelve Days of Christmas” to cheer on the runners as they came by. Although we may not have done such a great job singing, we got great feedback from the runners who “woo!”-ed and “hey!”-ed with us. Through this event, like every other, I learned that it is possible to have a great time with others while working towards a common cause. Most importantly, I was able to connect with the runners while accomplishing my duties as a volunteer.

Yingchao He, Scrapbook Committee Head Bronx Science Key Club attended the 2014 New York City Jingle Bell Run/Walk on December 3, 2014. The Jingle Bell Run/Walk is an event created by the Arthritis Foundation that fundraises to cure arthritis. Prior to the event, we were separated into groups of four and five. Our job during the run and walk was to encourage and cheer on the runners and walkers along the 5k. While we cheered, Erna, Johnson, and I also sang Christmas songs (at least we tried to sing) to the runners and walkers. Many of the participants also wore fun, festive holiday accessories such as santa hats, elf hats, and antlers to show their spirit. We also saw many people in christmas tree costumes and one group of walkers showed their “christmas swag” with their holiday onesies, elf shoes, and sunglasses. All in all, this festive event was only the start of the holiday month.

December Member of the Month

"Sandy is always a delight to see at events. Although we constantly tease each other and pretend that we hate each other, her dedication to this club is amazing. When I first met her in my freshman year, I had no idea who she was besides being the Fundraising Cohead. However, as time went on, I realized how important of a role she played in the club." - Timmy Zhu "Sandy is one of the most hard-working people I have ever met, and not only does she achieve great success both in school and out, she does it while keeping everyone happy!"

Sandy Jiang 16'

“Sandy is always looking for ways to improve fundraising activities and ideas. Along with Cassandra, she's very responsible in executing her job as a Fundraiser Committee Head. She is also open to other members and can easily hold conversations with them. I met and bonded with Sandy the same way, through talking with her at events and even outside of Key." - Sabrina Chen "One of my fondest memories with sandy was when I met her last winter at the Pillow Making event. At the event, although I didn't know her, she was super friendly and initiated our conversation and friendship. Along with being a wonderful friend, Sandy is also astounding as a leader. Her hard work in coleading the fundraising committee is seen through the well organized fundraisers we have throughout the service year. Besides being a leader, sandys one of my favorite seniors and friend. Her brilliant smile and well rounded persona can light up anyone's dreary day!" -Yingchao He
