VOLUME 8.8 NOVEMBER EDITION, 2019

ALONE WE CAN ONLY DO SO LITTLE, TOGETHER, WE CAN DO SO MUCH MORE

EDITOR'S NOTE November has ended and the Christmas Season is here! I've been impatiently waiting for the ability to sing Christmas songs and I know many of you have been too. I hope everyone had an amazing Thanksgiving and preferably avoided getting trampled on black Friday. This issue showcases many of our dedicated members during the month of Thanks. Keep in mind that if you have any questions or concerns, we're always here to talk. Don't be afraid to approach us and to have a conversation. It gets a little lonely. The festive season is here and this means the beginning of Holiday events! (My favorite) We will continue to work towards our goal of 14,000 hours as all of you continue to volunteer. The month of November contains so many fun fall events and I just wanted to say a special thank you to all of those that came out in the cold. With the Holiday season approaching, I hope everyone continues to find the time to help those in need. Remember to stay keep smiling!

Yours in service,

Rachel Lin

FOOD FOR THE SOUL NOVEMBER 6TH

WRITTEN BY SHIYA LIN When I got to the event, our project captain was actually waiting in front of the building for me since we were a really small group, and the lady at the front was welcoming and friendly when I stepped in. We started off with a few quick speeches by the people running the event, and then the other volunteers and I split into groups to pick up the work that was finished by the people working during the shift before us. Since there were only three of us from Key Club at the event, we took control of filling the bags for one rice and beans station. We were really competitive for no reason and joked about how we were so much faster than the Stuyvesant Key Club even though they weren’t present. We spent the majority of the time chatting over loud music while our hands did the work, and it was really funny because our project captain kept messing up with when to put soy and rice into the bags. Even though there weren’t many of us at the event, we worked really efficiently and were one of the first groups to finish packing their supplies. In fact, we worked so quickly that we actually finished everything 45 minutes before our scheduled time to leave. Even though my sleeves were coated in grains and powder by the end of our work, I think that it was overall a surprisingly enjoyable experience that taught me not to underestimate the power of just a few people. Additionally, since the other Key Clubbers at the event were both Sophomores who had taken some of the same classes as me, I was able to get a lot of advice from them about what to expect in some of my classes!

NOVEMBER 9TH & 16TH

ASTORIA PARK LEAF FEST

WRITTEN BY: NAMIRA HOSSAIN Today I went to the Astoria Park Leaf Fest with some of my friends. When we arrived at Astoria Park, there was a guide who gave us a short training session as to what we will be doing and what to expect. They gave us gloves, rakes, hand rakes and plastic bags. This was a much more different experience because this was much more hands on and you didn’t have to do the same task for two hours straight. I helped rake the leaves, carry the bags , take the rakes back to the starting place and leaves to the trucks to be made into compost. This is a special way to help the environment around us and protect it. Overall, this event was very satisfying to see the change in the park before and after the leaves were cleaned.

WRITTEN BY: SABIHA SINTHIA For the event, we raked leaves and placed them in bags, where we then disposed of them into the compost trucks. The purpose was to gather dead leaves and make them into new soil to put around New York. I was nervous about the event mostly because I never raked before and was scared that I would accidentally poke an eye out (thankfully I didn’t). The event went smoothly and time flew quickly. In addition to raking the leaves, the volunteers also carried bags of leaves to the compost trucks and surprisingly the bags were a little heavy. The bags were overfilled with leaves, so when carrying them, it was on the verge of ripping and letting all the leaves out. I was surprised about the volunteers, mostly because I expected that it would be mostly kids from high school, but the majority of the volunteers were adults and it was fun talking to them. The event overall was a success and I didn’t poke an eye out!

WRITTEN BY: RAY NOBUHARA It was very fun to volunteer to help clean up the park. Since I live right across the park, I used to walk my dogs every day there. I used to think about how unclean they are and it would be a better environment if it could be more clean. Therefore, it was very meaningful for me to be able to contribute to the cleaning of the park. It is especially meaningful for me because I would be able to look at a cleaner environment from the windows of my apartment and it is also a cleaner environment that my walks can walk in without us being disturbed of how unclean the park is. It was fun for me because I was able to work with my friends, and I was able to pick up leaves with different tools that I would not be able to use in our everyday lives.

NOVEMBER 16TH

RING THE BELLS SALVATION ARMY

WRITTEN BY:OLIVIA LEI This event was very fun and exciting, everyone had such positive energy. When everyone arrived, we were all given bells and we were ringing them by a sign for donations. We were shouting out to the people walking past us, and quite a few people made their way to donate some money. What’s funny is that we had two speakers to play some holiday music, but one died and the other was dying. We managed to salvage some music from one of them, but it was fun working with everyone else. It was so cold though, we had a lot of fun, but we worked in shifts to get warmed up and come back. There were some shops nearby, so we would go in and buy some snacks or hot drinks. We all just hung out while shivering and had fun while asking people to donate to the Salvation Army. I even brought my little brother out to ring the bells, he also enjoyed this event very much.

NOVEMBER 17TH

NYSOM

THANKSGIVING!

WRITTEN BY: MATTHEW HE On November 17, we arrived at Mayday Space and helped NYSoM set up their Thanksgiving event. The coordinators gave us all pizza, and then we were assigned to different tables. The tables had activities such as painting, Thanksgiving edition crossword puzzles, and more. Me and a few other people wanted to dress up in costumes such as a turkey. People started coming in about an hour later and together, everyone had a good time celebrating with Christmas music.

Senior Tech November 17th

Written by: Namira Hossain Today I went to Senior Tech which is basically a session in which a teen helps a senior in assisting them with their technology related problems. My designated job was assigned to a senior (her name was Naomi) and I had to help her with how to transfer pictures from different apple devices and “clean up” those devices. At first I was a bit nervous but I felt very comfortable soon afterwards because my Senior was very relatable and fun to “teach”. We talked about how Instagram works and even posted a new picture of her as she learned. This special event impacted my key club experience because I got to work with people of an older age and got to experience how they deal with modern day problems and tech.

Written by: Sabiha Sinthia At the event, we had to help seniors that had specific parts they needed help with. I was paired with a senior that needed help with using Twitter and Instagram. She made it much easier to help her because she was already knowledgeable about how to use the iPhone. While helping her, I learned a lot about her preferences and what she is active in. When helping her with her Twitter, we were able to discuss about the political leaders that represented our neighborhood and what she did as a social worker before she retired. I was really amazed by when she was able to grasp on very quickly and learned how to compose tweets. I was also able to see some of the artworks she made in her free time and help her post it on Instagram. At the end of the event, she said I was really helpful and that just made my day because it felt great to know that I help her. This event shaped my Key Club experience because it makes me want to have more Senior Tech events and help out the seniors. The event was enjoyable and would like to have more of them.

Thanksgiving Home Visits NOVEMBER 16TH

Written by: Olivia Lei This event was very fun and interesting, the people you met were very warm and welcoming, and there were even donuts. When everyone arrived and signed in, the event coordinator, Sam, told us how there were many seniors in the community who were homebound, but we still wanted them to enjoy Thanksgiving, so our job was to package some items and deliver them to their homes. Once we settled in, we were given cube tissue boxes and craft supplies, and started making little turkeys. This part of the event was particularly fun, we were talking and hanging out with the other people there. We finished all our turkeys, and we began walking out to deliver the packages. I feel like this was the hardest part of the entire of the event, it was raining, my phone was dying, it was so cold, and I couldn’t feel my fingers anymore. None of us had an umbrella, and we were walking around hoping the packages wouldn’t get soaked. Nonetheless, it was still a very exciting event, and one of the seniors even invited us inside her home and we had a good time chatting with each other.

Community Sing-A-long NOVEMBER 30TH

Written by: JESSICA ALONSO On Saturday November 30th, I attended the Community Sing Along event. When I first arrived, the event coordinators gave us all elf hats to wear in the spirit of Christmas. It was really funny to see all the volunteers wearing these hats because they were really small on our heads. Once everyone had arrived, we began setting up tables for kids to make Christmas tree ornaments while they listened to Christmas carols. I along with a few other members were kept in charge of helping the kids create their ornaments. This was a really nice experience because many of the kids were really young and sweet. While we helped the children, other volunteers went around giving away jingle bells and lights to the parents and kids. After a few hours of singing, people began to go home and we began putting away all of the decorations and tables. Although the event did not last too long, I still had a lot of fun and I even met some new members as well.

Written by: Ray Nobuhara

On 11/30, I went to the holiday sing-along. There, we were assigned roles as to what we should do during the event. I got the role of crafts. That means that I was at the crafts station and helped the children visitors to make their own ornaments using the tree and star templates. We also made our own. It was very fun because we were able to talk to the children, which would not have been possible without through this event.

Written by: YAN LI

The event was very enjoyable and entertaining. Although it was freezing outside, it was still a memorable experience. It was nice getting to meet little children and handing them candles and jingle-bells. I loved seeing the smiles on their faces. I was also able to meet and get to know more key club members. Overall, the event was really fun and lively.

Written by: ShiyA lIN The Sing-Along has been my favorite Key Club event so far. Not only did I go with my K-family, but I knew a lot of the people there. We had about an hour before the event actually started, so all of us ran around the empty street and bonded over the dogs that would walk by. We wore elf hats and helped with little tasks like passing around songbooks, candles, and bells. I was at the art station where we helped kids decorate paper ornaments. Even though our hands were freezing, we found ways to distract ourselves from the cold. We took pictures with Frosty the Snowman, stole candles and bells for the kids (it was mostly me), sang when our favorite songs came up, and overall laughed a lot. I was proclaimed “Best Freshman” by Matthew, which is a title I’ll be taking to my grave.

Written by: TIFFANY TSAI Today, November 30th, 2019, I went to the Community Sing- Along in Upper East Side Manhattan. Volunteers gave out song books, candles, and bells, to pedestrians. Other volunteers were in charge of the crafts table, where there are drawing utensils, stickers, and Christmas tree cutouts for children to decorate and draw on. A few musicians played holiday music and the community sang along to the tunes. A girl part of the organization dressed up put on Frosty the Snowman costume and many took pictures with the snowman. It was a very wholesome time and it spiked our holiday spirits!
