"You need to accept the fact that you’re not the best and have all the will to strive to be better than anyone you face." Roronoa Zoro
EDITOR'S NOTE Heyo! Happy December! I don't know about you, but December is both the best and worst month of the year. On the one hand, it's finally acceptable to blast Christmas music all day long. And of course, we get winter break! But it's also kind of stressful. Teachers assign a lot of tests and projects before the end of the year, and seniors are starting to hear back from colleges! No matter what you face this month, I hope that Key Club can be an outlet for you to destress and hangout with friends! This past month was quite a busy month, with both Key Club week and Thanksgiving week on top of our normal events. It's always so amazing to see everyone's passion towards service and kindness towards others! See you next month! ~Laura Pong '22

BREATHE DEEP TOGETHER The Breathe Deep Together event was fun despite the cold. We were near the water in the Lower West Side of Manhattan to help raise awareness for Lung Cancer. As volunteers, we helped the event coordinators bring pre-bought food to the event, set up signs along the walk, and acted as course marshals to point walkers in the correct direction. I remember being appointed as project captain the morning of the event because the previous project captain was sick, and being in a panic because I was already late. However, the event itself was super chill and I got to meet a lot of freshmen Key Clubbers! In fact, I was there for Malika’s first ever Key Club event, and was proud to be her partner when we separated into groups as course marshals. There was a lot of stumbling around during this event because the event coordinators didn’t really tell us what to do, but in the end, we figured things out and even got to go home early with muffins in hand. -- Shiya Lin '23

On November 7th, I attended the Mile 4 volunteer event. I attended both shifts for this event, and aside from the cold in the morning, it was a great experience and I really enjoyed it! We were volunteering at the TCS NYC Marathon Course and helping out at Fluid Station Mile 4. The first thing we did was set up tables. Then, volunteers were divided up to do different jobs at different stations. A few people mixed and prepared buckets of Gatorade. Several other volunteers would set up cups and use a pitcher to pour the Gatorade into the cups. Down the block, volunteers were doing the same setup but with water. I was at the Gatorade section so my shoes got pretty sticky. But, volunteers were given a poncho and there was also donuts and coffee during break :) In the afternoon, volunteers were spread out at the different tables and distributed water or Gatorade to thousands of runners approaching the mile point. It was nice to support them by cheering them on and helping them replenish. I was happy to have been able to meet and chat with fellow Key Clubbers and talk with NHS upperclassmen. After all the runners passed, volunteers helped clean up by raking the cups on the floor into a pile and shoveling them up into plastic bags. This event was pretty long, but the accompaniment of friends and the chance to meet new people made it all worthwhile and a great experience. I would totally attend an event like this again!! -- Ena Lu '24
VOLUNTEER MILE 4 9
Over 50 Bronx Science Key Clubbers and numerous other Key Clubbers from Brooklyn Tech, Bayside, and Cardozo showed up at the Leaf Fest event on Saturday, November 13th. We split into two groups on both sides of the park, each having a truck for the leaf bags. Since there were so many of us working together, we filled up the trucks pretty quickly. We got to rake leaves and scoop them into bags while making new friends and exploring the park. In the end, we gathered together to take pictures with other volunteers and then a picture with all the Bronx Science Key Clubbers! All in all, the event made a great Saturday as there were so many people there! -- Malika Toregeldiyeva '25

I love embroidery to the extent that I have embroidered on my backpack and even my shoes.:D So when I saw that there was a Key Club event where you have to help with the embroidery project, I immediately signed
City As Livin Tapestry
up! We had such a fun time embroidering trees and bushes on a piece of fabric. Since I already knew the basics of embroidery, I taught other people how to make “french knots,” which is one of the basics. It was so nice to see many people learning embroidery for the first time and realizing how relaxing and fun it was! This was such a great event and I can’t wait to see the finished tapestry! -- Jeongwon Lee '23

ng Laboratory y Project
On November 14th, I attended the “City As Living Laboratory Tapestry Project” event. We learned the specifics about the tapestry project and how to complete a tile. Completing a tile would require you to sign up on the website, where you will be able to have a kit emailed to you
with the materials needed to complete the tile (all for free!) At the event, volunteers were introduced to the materials inside the kit and learned how to do a French knot. I find embroidering to be fun and really relaxing. This event was outdoors and there were limited materials, so we didn’t get to do much embroidering in person. However, after practicing a couple of french knots, I got to look around the market with my friends. There were earrings, scarves, hats, and many homemade foods. The traditional sour cream cookies were really good, and the animal-shaped sugar cookies were so cute! I also discovered honey sticks! They’re basically honey but infused with different flavors. There was even mint flavor! I think it was pretty unique. This event was really chill, and it was nice to meet fellow Key Clubbers and hang out with my friends :))) The market was also pretty cool. -- Ena Lu '24

NYSoM Thanksgiving Palooza I attended another one of NYSOM’s events, and I had a blast! While there was still an insane amount of volunteers there, I was able to help distribute food, along with setting up and cleaning up. I was able to meet some new people, especially those from other schools. I had a great time, and I am excited for more events! -- Linh Luu '23 I attended the November 20th NYSoM Thanksgiving Palooza 2021 event and had an awesome time volunteering! fun! I really enjoyed working with other people to pass out Thanksgiving food to those in need! There was a lot of fun memories I made at this event, one of which is the delicious apple crumble pie I got to eat:)) I can’t wait to attend my next NYSoM event, they never disappoint. -- Chrissy Jung '24
On November 20th, I attended the NYSoM Thanksgiving Palooza 2021 Event. For this event, there were many Key Clubs present so there was ALOT of volunteers. Unfortunately, some volunteers didn’t end up having a job. But for the volunteers that did get a job, they were separated to do different
were made, and there were trivia questions written on colored paper. Different answers had different points, and the guests could use their points to exchange for items and prizes. This event was really chill and I enjoyed cutting pie :)) There was extra food left so volunteers got to enjoy them :3 Some also took extra food pantry items home haha. It was nice to meet fellow Key Clubbers and talk with friends. I would totally attend an NYSoM event again!! -- Ena Lu '24
tasks. Some separated/organized food pantry items in the back kitchen. Some would then deliver the items downstairs to where they would be given out. Another group of volunteers was in charge of cutting and serving pie. A wheel, with the flavors of the pie written, was created for the guests to spin. There were also groups working on activities and crafts. Paper turkeys

Leaf Crunch Day 2 at Brust Park 16
I know that a lot of people went to the Leaf Feast event, which was held the week before the Leaf Crunch Day 2 event. Seeing so many people going to the leaf raking event made me want to try it too because I’ve never gone to one before. And I can say that this was one of my favorite Key Club events! Not a lot of people came to the event that day, so we had a pretty small group of people. But that made the experience so much better! It was easier for me to get to know people and get closer to them. I met such amazing people there and I would like to go to a leaf raking event again if I can! Of course, it was a lot of work and made me physically tired, but I think it was worth it because it made me so happy seeing the clean park after finishing! -- Jeongwon Lee '23
NYC Turkey Trot HalfMarathon & 5k Event
I participated in the NYC Turkey Trot HalfMarathon & 5K event, which was a really cool experience! I handed out water bottles and medals to the marathoners when they finished running. I met some new people, not only from Bronx Science but also from Cardozo and Townsend Harris. This event really opened my eyes to how much volunteers contribute to these events! Especially when we gave the finishing marathoners their much deserved water and medals, I realized how important it is to help where we can. So I look forward to participating in more events! -- Katherine Han '24

LANDSCAPING AT RIDGEWOOD RESERVOIR I volunteered at the Landscaping at Ridgewood Reservoir event on 11/28, and this event was pretty chill. It was pretty cold, but they did provide hand warmers and gloves for us. This was the first event I went to that there were less than 10 people who came which was a bit surprising. We swept the paths at the reservoir, cut down the plants that were growing from the side of the path walls, and raked leaves. Using saws to cut down trees that were growing was definitely the hardest part, but it was satisfying when it was done. There were many tools we can choose from and we didn’t have to do one type of work for the entire time. They provided snacks and water for the volunteers which were very nice of them. Overall a great experience. -- Jessica Lin '25

Friday 11/05: Connect the K's!
Members looked back on their interactions with the different levels of Kiwanis! I’ve interacted with Kiwanis during events before, whether they’re local Kiwanis that happen to be at the event that day or Circle-K members who were leading the event I was attending. I remember once, a local Kiwian was at a charity event I was helping at and I got to talk to them about how Key Club was for them when they were my age, and other experiences they held close to their heart. That conversation gave me another perspective on how incredible volunteer work can be, and made me more determined to attend more events and learn from the people around me. -- Anny Chen '23
