EDITOR'S NOTE
The school year feels like it's rushing by extremely quickly but I hope everyone is getting by okay. With wave after wave of tests and assignments, it's hard to believe we have the time to volunteer but our members always persevere through. Bronx Science key clubbers are always looking for ways to continue helping our community. If you have any questions or concerns, we strongly encourage you to ask away! We're always here to have a quick conversation. Don't be shy! The season of pumpkin spice lattes and hoodies have officially arrived which means a whole new wave of fall events! We will continue to work towards our goal of 14,000 hours as all of you continue to volunteer. This month contains some of our most popular events including Breast Cancer walk and Light The Light! Our members are some of the most dedicated people I've seen. Juggling one's school work and still finding the time to volunteer is not an easy feat. I hope each and every one of you keep finding ways to better our community. Remember to stay positive!

ELSIE FEST SUMMERSTAGE
WRITTEN BY: BHASKAR CHAKRABARTI WHEN I GOT TO SUMMERSTAGE, WE WERE ALL GIVEN A WALKTHROUGH OF WHERE EVERYTHING WAS AND WHO COULD SIT WHERE DEPENDING ON WHAT TICKET THEY HAD. THEN, WE STOOD BY THE ENTRANCE GREETING AND HANDING OUT FREE COFFEE CARDS TO EVERYONE WHO ENTERED. I ALSO HELPED ESCORT THE DISABLED TO THEIR DESIGNATED SEATING AREAS. THROUGHOUT THE PERFORMANCE, WE GAVE DIRECTIONS AND ANSWERED ANY QUESTIONS PEOPLE HAD. WE ALSO GOT TO LISTEN TO SOME GREAT BROADWAY MUSIC AND EVEN SAW THE BACKSTAGE! OVERALL, I HAD A LOT OF FUN AND WOULD LOVE TO DO MORE SUMMERSTAGE EVENTS IN THE FUTURE.
NYC LUPUS WALK 10/12/19

OCTOBER 12TH
Today, October 12 2019, I went to volunteer at the LUPUS walk. The event started with me checking in to the Intrepid air, space and sea museum where I was greeted by the nearby gift shop and many other volunteers. I got a volunteer shirt and vest for identification. My first job was to hand out wristbands to incoming runners and then monitor the run throughout the beginning. This process took about two and a half hours. The funny experience that I had was that during the walk, we had to dance a little bit with some characters like Peppa pig and Pj max which was kind of awkward yet fun for me. Additionally, this event impacted my key club experience because it was a very memorable event and really fun for me because even though this was my first ever key club event, I had fun with my friends and even some new people I met from other schools. Some of the fun parts included the dancing competition, the extremely fun music, tye-dying t-shirts , marching band , freebies and the variety of food that was available (especially the warm hot chocolate on a cold day). More importantly this event stood out to me because it helped raise awareness for LUPUS since not many people know how dangerous this disease is and that it can affect even the healthiest of people. This experience is definitely one to remember and will stick with me throughout my memories from Key club.
NYC LUPUS WALK 10/12/19

OCTOBER 12TH
At the Intrepid Air and Space Museum, people from New York City united together to walk for the same cause: to end lupus. Lupus is a disease caused when the immune system begins attacking its own tissues. People came in wearing purple, the lupus mascot: the butterfly, and carried signs to show their participation in the walk and support to find a cure for the disease. There were volunteers at the tie-dye shirts, where the tie-dyed shirts and sold them for 5 dollars, the money being donated to the cause. There were also volunteers at the food stalls, giving out snacks and hot chocolate to provide warmth in the cold, they were giving out items such as shirts and hats, and did face painting for the people who attended the walk. The event was a success and at the end everyone enjoyed themselves.
ANNUAL CUPCAKE RUN 10/12/19
Written by Shiya Lin OCTOBER 12TH On Sunday, October 12, I helped volunteer at the NYC Cupcake Run. Since this was my first ever Key Club event, I was a bit nervous going into it and was mostly lost about where we were supposed to go to help as volunteers. However, it was comforting when I met some other new members who were equally as lost as me. We stuck together for the majority of the day as we decorated the finish line for the runners and wrote words of encouragement on the pavement for them to see as they ran through their first and second laps around the park. We were given the task of handing out t-shirts and tote bags to the runners when they reached the finish line, and though we weren’t told to, we also decided to fold the tshirts and put them in the bags so that things would be a bit easier for the runners to carry when they finished their 5 km run. While this was a lot of self-inflicted, tedious work, I had a lot of fun just chatting with the other members as we folded t-shirts. I’m not even upset about standing for over two hours in the cold, or the fact that there were no extra tote bags for us to take. Rather, I’m surprised that volunteering could be such a laid-back and friendly experience, and I’m really grateful that I was able to make new friends through this. I can’t wait to volunteer again!!
OCTOBER 20TH
BREAST CANCER WALK

This breast cancer awareness walk was very enjoyable. We were able to see everyone come together at the start to fight breast cancer together. I was a walker in this event, taking part in the walk and fight against breast cancer. Despite the fact that it was raining, the event was extremely fun and was very worthwhile. It taught me to appreciate the small things in life and to enjoy with what I have. It shows how humanity can come together and fight together for a better world.

At Pilgrim Hill, Central Park, thousands of people met up to walk to raise awareness and funds to save lives from being lost due to breast cancer. Before the walk began, there were people up on stage hyping everyone up to go onward with the utmost amount of energy they have. The total walk distance was 4 miles. Other volunteers provided refreshments and supported those walking. When looking around, the majority of the people wore encouraging messages on their shirts and accessories that have the pink ribbon design. At the end of the four miles, the participants walked into cheers and ended up sending encouragement to people who need it.

Today, October 20th, 2019, I participated in the annual Breast Cancer Walk for awareness in Central Park. We walked for 4 miles inside Central Park. One of the most memorable things from this event was when a group of women wearing sashes that says “survivors” chanted in unison to fight against breast cancer. It was a very empowering moment.

Light the Night

THE EVENT STARTED OFF RELATIVELY SLOWLY BUT A STREAM OF PEOPLE GRADUALLY APPEARED. MY FRIENDS AND I GOT THERE QUITE EARLY AND LOOKED AROUND. WE DONATED MONEY, GOT LANTERNS AND MEET UP WITH SOME PEOPLE WE KNEW. IT WAS FUN GOING TO DIFFERENT AREAS, ESPECIALLY THE REMEMBRANCE PAVILION, AND GETTING TO KNOW EVERYONE'S STORIES. THEN IT STARTED GETTING DARKER AND RIGHT BEFORE THE WALK, YOU CAN SEE EVERYONE'S LANTERN LIGHT UP. EACH LANTERN WAS SPECIAL, NO MATTER WHAT COLOUR OR HOW BRIGHT IT WAS. IT SHOWED ME THAT EVERYBODY IS NEEDED TO MAKE A CHANGE AND IF WE ALL STAND UP TOGETHER, WE CAN MAKE SOME INCREDIBLE THINGS HAPPEN. LIGHT THE NIGHT WILL ALWAYS BE A SPECIAL EVENT FOR ME, IT WAS MY FIRST KEY CLUB EVENT AND IT OPENED MY EYES TO THE GREAT THINGS WE CAN ALL DO.

TO BE COMPLETELY HONEST, I DIDN’T THINK THAT LIGHT THE NIGHT WOULD BE THAT EXCITING, ESPECIALLY SINCE I’M A STAY-AT-HOME KIND OF PERSON. HOWEVER, AFTER GOING TO LIGHT THE NIGHT, I FELT LIKE SOMETHING HAD CHANGED INSIDE ME. LIGHT THE NIGHT WAS BASICALLY A WALK IN WHICH WE HELD LANTERNS AND SUPPORTED PEOPLE THAT WERE VICTIMS OF OR CURRENTLY HAD LEUKEMIA. HEARING THIS IMMEDIATELY MADE ME FEEL LIKE I WAS MAKING A CHANGE, AND I WAS HELPING THOSE WHO COULDN’T HELP THEMSELVES. I FELT LIKE A HERO LIKE THE ONES IN COMICS, WHERE I WAS USING MY ABILITY TO LIVE TO HELP OTHERS TO ALSO LIVE. BESIDES THAT, THE EXPERIENCE OF LIGHT THE NIGHT WAS SOMETHING NEW TO ME. I HAD LEARNED NEW THINGS ABOUT OUR VAST WORLD, AND I GENUINELY ENJOYED MYSELF. GOING WITH FRIENDS WAS A PLUS, BUT BESIDES THAT, LIGHT THE NIGHT SHOWED ME THAT NOT EVERYONE IS LUCKY. CANCER COMES WHENEVER IT FEELS LIKE IT, AND THE UNLUCKY VICTIMS OF IT ARE FORCED THROUGH CHEMOTHERAPY JUST SO THEY CAN SURVIVE. THE LUCKY AMONGST US LIVING WITHOUT CANCER SHOULD TRY AND HELP THOSE WITH THIS AILMENT. THIS IS SOMETHING I LEARNED AFTER GOING TO LIGHT THE NIGHT AND HEARING THE STORIES OF PATIENTS AND VICTIMS OF LEUKEMIA. SOMETHING MEMORABLE DURING LIGHT THE NIGHT WAS WHEN THE WHOLE CROWD, BEFORE THE WALK, HELD UP THEIR LANTERNS. IT WAS A SIGHT TO BEHOLD, AS OUR LANTERNS LIT UP THE NIGHT (HENCE THE NAME OF THE EVENT), AND THE WALK AFTERWARD ENERGIZED ME. OVERALL, I THINK THAT LIGHT THE NIGHT WAS AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE.

LIGHT THE NIGHT WAS A FUN AND HEARTWARMING EVENT. IT STARTS WITH REUNION, WHETHER IT’S WITH FRIENDS OR OTHER PEOPLE MEETING WITH THEIRS; EVERYONE WAS HAPPY TO BE THERE AND SUPPORT EACH OTHER. AS IT GOT DARKER AND THE NIGHT SETTLED IN, MUSIC WAS BEING PLAYED AND WANDERING AROUND THE PARK WAS PEACEFUL. I COULD STILL REMEMBER A TOUCH OF TRANQUILITY AS IT WAS DARK, AND ALL YOU COULD SEE WAS A CROWD OF GLOWING RED, YELLOW, AND WHITE LAMPS. YOU COULD’VE COMPARED THE MOMENT TO A SCENE IN ‘TANGLED’. AS THE BAND MEMBERS BEGAN THE EVENT, I WAS OVERWHELMED BY HOW MANY PEOPLE THERE WERE. ALL THE LAMPS BEING RAISED INTO THE AIR WAS A SIGHT I WILL NEVER FORGET. LEUKEMIA IS A DEADLY DISEASE BUT SEEING SO MANY PATIENTS AND SUPPORTERS GAVE ME HOPE. HOPE THAT THE PATIENTS WHO ARE GETTING TREATMENT FOR LEUKEMIA WILL SURVIVE, AND HOPE THAT THERE WILL BE A DAY WHERE CANCER ISN’T LIFEENDING AS IT IS.
Written by: Jillian Chong LIGHT THE NIGHT WAS MY FIRST EVENT OF THE YEAR. ALTHOUGH I ATTENDED THE EVENT LAST YEAR, THIS YEAR STOOD OUT FROM THE LAST. BEFORE WE STARTED WALKING, WE LISTENED TO THE STORIES OF MANY OTHER SUPPORTERS FOR THE LEUKEMIA AND LYMPHOMA SOCIETY. IT WAS ENLIGHTENING TO BE ABLE TO HEAR THE EXPERIENCES OF THOSE WHO HAVE LOST LOVED ONES OR THOSE WHO ARE STILL BATTLING CANCER. THE ENCOURAGING ENVIRONMENT WAS INSPIRING, AND SEEING THE BRIGHT WHITE, RED, AND GOLD LIGHTS IN THE DARK REVEALED HOW MANY PEOPLE CAME OUT TO SUPPORT THE CAUSE. EVEN WITH SMALL DONATIONS, WE WERE ABLE TO SHOW OUR SUPPORT AND BRING LIGHT TO THE LIVES OF THOSE STILL FIGHTING CANCER.
OCTOBER 20TH
KIWANIS WINDOW PAINTING

The Kiwanis Window Painting is an annual event hosted by our very own Riverdale Kiwanis. There was a surprising outcome of children coming even in the rain. Having gone last year it was a very nostalgic day. I remember seeing the Riverdale Kiwanis’s event coordinator bring his two daughters last year, one didn’t know how to even walk yet and the other was too shy to leave her dad. This year they were both running around helping the other kids paint. I remembered seeing all the stores being unpainted and it looks like an impossible task for a bunch of elementary school kids to do but both years they ended up surprising me turning the neighborhood filled with color. I was lucky enough to be selected to paint the same store as I had the previous year. As expected my artistic abilities hadn’t changed and it looked as if it had actually worsened but it was definitely worth it and was an amazing day to hangout with my friends.

HALLOWEEN AT THE GARDEN
Written by: Alina Chan Halloween at the Garden was an event where volunteers at the Botanical Garden helped out to ensure that visitors had a good time. My job was to tell incoming visitors where things were located, like the bathroom, along with several other small tasks. This experience was amazing as we were able to help out our local community while also seeing the happiness on the children's faces. It felt gratifying that I was able to do something that would make someone’s day.

Abominable Fundraiser October 6th
Written by Akaneh Wang On October 6th, I went to the movie fundraiser for Abominable. The morning of the fundraiser, it was cloudy, and as I walked down the street towards the movie theater, I felt a little worried. I had forgotten my umbrella, and the fundraiser was at the Magic Johnson AMC movie theater in Harlem - an hour and a half away from my home. Since I had gotten there early though, I got to look around the area a little bit. When I arrived at the theater, Bhaskar and Stephen were already there. We waited for everyone else to start showing up, and got our tickets. We then rushed into the movie theater, sat back, and watched Abominable. The movie started off with a yeti escaping a research facility and ending up on the roof of an apartment, where the main character, a teenage chinese girl named Yi, finds him sleeping. Yi finds that the yeti, who she names Everest, wants to go back home to Mount Everest. As Everest escaped evil researchers to head home, Yi, her childhood friend Jin, and his cousin, Peng, embark on an unlikely journey through China to help their new friend. As the story and journey progresses, Yi, previously labeled as “loner� by Jin, begins to open up and accept the death of her father, which she kept buried in her heart. At the end of the movie, Everest safely makes it back to his home and his parents, and Yi comes home with a newfound sense of hope and purpose in life. The animation was really beautiful throughout the movie, and the ending left me misty-eyed. The movie made me think about my life, my outlook on things and and the true importance of family. That day, even though the weather was gloomy outside, I left the theater feeling warm and happy.
