“Don’t give up, there’s no shame in falling down! True shame is to not stand up again!” - Shintaro Midorima

EDITOR'S NOTE HELLOOO Miss me? It's been a hectic few months, with college and school, so I wasn't able to release this newsletter last month. But! There were so many amazing October events (especially Halloween themed) that I thought it would be a waste to combine the October and November newsletters together. Key Club always participates in amazing fall themed events, and I had a lot of fun look at all over your pictures and events. Some of you even got to wear really cool costumes! Sending cozy vibes your way, ~Laura Pong '22

9 Million Reasons Evangel Food Pantry The 9 Million Reasons Evangel Food Pantry was a very relaxing event to attend! I attended the event with Lucia Gallo, who was the project captain, and we assisted the Church volunteers with their grand reopening in the upcoming weeks. It was a wonderful event to attend in the morning; walking to the event location meant I saw parts of a new area that I’ve never been to before, and meeting new people who were passionate about their mission at the Church’s Food Pantry was inspiring. While cleaning the Church’s lobby and auditorium, Lucia and I were able to explore the large building, even going backstage, into dark staircases that led to greater parts of the building. Overall, it was a simple experience that let me experience and see for myself another part of other lives, one that was far outside my own. After the event, I felt refreshed and inspired by those who were passionate about helping others; it brought me into a sense of productivity and pushed me to work towards my own goals! -- Anny Chen '23

My original expectations for this event as project captain were pretty good. I could take my bike to the event, harvest some delicious vegetables, and have a productive volunteer day. However, all the folks who signed up for the event canceled, and I was planning on canceling, but I decided to go anyway. I took my bike to the event up the East River, and I arrived to find a happy farmer harvesting some sweet potato leaves. I had never really done garden or farm work before, since city life doesn’t provide that opportunity. I had a great time learning how the many vegetables were grown. People often don’t think about where food comes from. Many just go to the grocery store without thinking that many hands touched the same food as it went from Earth to shelf. It was nice to be the only volunteer, because I learned so much this way, about Randall’s Island and the history of the park. Randall’s Island happens to be my favorite spot to bike and relax, and I had always passed by the farm without taking a look inside. My favorite part of the event was probably meeting the chickens. They responded to the farmer’s beckoning, and they were really sweet. I had to leave the event 30 minutes early because it started to rain. Before I left, another farmer came and gave 2 free t-shirts, and I got to take home a large portion of the harvest, which my family definitely enjoyed. As I biked home in the torrential rain, with my food sack and t shirts wrapped around my waist, I realized that I got more than just clothes and food. I got the experience of working to harvest the work of farmers and I learned about how different types of vegetables grow. It was truly an unforgettable experience, and It taught me to not give up on events before the event even starts. -- Luke Jow '22

BREA CANCER On October 17th, members of the community came together to participate in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event in Central Park. Donations that we accumulated at this event went towards the American Cancer Society to research and detect breast cancer. Not only were we walking to raise awareness for breast cancer, but also honoring breast cancer survivors. We all walked approximately 5 miles and had a wonderful opportunity to talk to others and learn about their stories. Even though it was pretty chilly (especially during the early morning), I had fun and thoroughly enjoyed participating in this event. I hope I will be able to participate in this event again next year!! :) -- Alison Huang '24

CHARITY MILES: THIRST PROJECT 13

NYSoM Ha Havoc

On October 30, 2021, Key Clubbers were able to join NYSoM's 8th annual Halloween Havoc event by helping them set up and manage Halloweenthemed stations (i.e. pumpkin painting, slime making, axe throwing, etc) as well as a haunted house. I spent most of my 6 hours of volunteering helping to set up the haunted house on the third floor, where I not only learned to conquer my fear of heights but also realized how entertaining it was to scare kids through our attractions.

NYSoM events hold a special place in my heart because not only are they always a blast, but also because I love that they are centered around allowing my neighborhood’s children to have fun. From the costumes that they always offer volunteers to wear to the friendly staff and collaborative nature of these events, NYSoM events are always a great place to make fun memories. In fact, one of my most memorable Key Club experiences was during my freshman year at the NYSoM Holidays 2019 event.

Since NYSoM events are so popular and collaborative, it’s really the best kind of event to get to know other Key Clubbers both at your school and throughout the division. Volunteers from Brooklyn Tech, Townsend Harrison, Stuyvesant Key Club and Stuyvesant Red Cross, along with HSMSE, and Cardozo Key Club were all present during this year’s Halloween Havoc event. It was truly such a joy being able to interact with so many people, and I got to meet so many of this year’s freshmen too! I don’t think I’ll ever stop advocating for NYSoM events!! I can’t wait to attend more in the future <33 -- Shiya Lin '23

Being new to the key club and even high school itself, the NYSoM Halloween Havoc event was a new yet exciting experience for me. This event was hosted in Manhattan on the 30th of October, lasting nearly 6

hours for the volunteering students. Although a quarter of my Saturday was taken, I really do believe that it was worth the time and effort I spent helping out. This is because during the event, I was able to socialize with many different people from within and outside Bronx Science (schools like Townsend, Cardozo, & Stuyvesant). It was a nice change of pace from spending my entire weekend playing games to volunteering and openly talking to people for once. To continue, the event was mainly indoors with activities like cookie decorating, pumpkin painting, and taking a tour of the haunted house. These attractions were set up and run by the key club volunteers who spent a lot of work on them. Personally, I spent most of my time at the front desk greeting people, of which, make no mistake, was just as difficult as any other position in the event (had to stand the entire time because there were no chairs at the front). However, the

free popcorn, coffee, iced-tea, and extremely cool upper-classmen made up for it ten fold. Overall, I believe that this event set a good positive example for me as well as the other freshmen who have never volunteered before. I would most definitely partake in future events/meetings for the key club! -- Eric Leem ‘25

NYSoM Ha Havoc While it was a long event that lasted 6 hours, I can confidently say it was worth the time and very enjoyable. At first it was a bit confusing because I didn't know what to do, but everyone was so welcoming that I could just pick up anything and begin working. While most of the people I knew were stationed at the cookie station, I was scaring people at the haunted house. I had never worked in a haunted house before so it was another new experience I got because of Key club. The best feeling was when I managed to scare people in my flimsy disguise and let them enjoy the haunted house. I really liked how we got to enjoy the event with everyone who came, like getting cookies from the cookie station, dancing, or playing games offered there. Since there were a lot of volunteers it wasn’t stressful even with the amount that had to be done. There was even a room we could take a break in if we needed it. It was a nice way to get in the fun spooky mood before Halloween. -- Mandy Lim '23

alloween c 2021 Volunteering at NYSoM’s Halloween Havoc was a pleasure! Since in-person events are finally picking up, it was really great to be back to attending events with friends. During the event, I was able to welcome visitors into the building for NYSoM’s event in the gym, as well as a very popular haunted house that many of my friends were able to help set up and participate in. I saw many cute and impressive costumes, and I was also able to meet many key clubbers from other schools! It was a great time, being able to see our own key club members and also meet our new ones; virtual events just didn’t have the same social aspect of in-person events. All in all, helping out at NYSoM’s Halloween Havoc was a blast and I look forward to future events at NYSoM and, hopefully, volunteer at those as well. -Anny Chen '23

Halloween at I participated in the "Halloween at the Garden" event on October 31st at Queens botanical garden. Not only was the event fun, it was close to my house, and the weather was amazing. Our job as volunteers specifically was to greet the families that come to participate in this event, as well as taking pictures for them. What made the event memorable were the different costumes that people came with as well as the smiles on their faces. The overall positive mood made the event so much more fun! We also got to choose one pumpkin to take home at the end of the event. Overall, I enjoyed hanging out with the other people who volunteered in this event and the overall halloween vibe the garden gave off, thanks to Key club! --Derek Dong '23
