Chew Toy and St. Jude Card Making Meeting

Michael Chan, Dedicated Key Clubber On November 30, Key Clubbers went to Open Karaoke in Flushing for the Karaoke Fundraiser. It was a time for us to have fun during the Thanksgiving weekend. We met up at 2:00 PM and were able to have a surprisingly large quantity of space at the KTV place. We were confused about how to select songs to sing at first because everything was written in Korean, but Alice was able to show us how everything worked because she understood the words in the song selection books. During our 2 hour stay, we were able to sing songs from artists such as Maroon 5, Bruno Mars, Flo Rida, Katy Perry, and Taylor Swift. After each song, the singers were given a score based on their performance. In my opinion, the most memorable part of this event was when Ted sang Barbie Girl and scored a 98. Overall, the event was fun because everyone sang each song together with or without the microphones. Those with the microphone were able to use it to be the main singer of a song. I remember singing Don’t Stop Believing with Danny and we were able to get a 100. The only problem was that the song was cut down to only the first minute so it didn’t count as a full song. Kenji and Ted deserved props for singing the most during the beginning of the event. It encouraged more people to sing which made the event more interactive for us as Key Clubbers.

Karaoke Fundraiser

Ted Kalis, Dedicated Key Clubber When given the option to karaoke, it seems so difficult to refuse. Throwing Key Club into the mix only sweetens the deal. Key Club’s Fundraising Committee held the November fundraiser at Open Karaoke. The moment we walked into our room, all of us were so prepared to sing our hearts out. As always, Ted took the lead and serenaded Kenji with Adele’s “Rolling In The Deep”. Love songs seemed to be a center theme of this karaoke outing, with the numerous couples there in addition to people who generally adore love songs. Kalvin Chi, a Stuyvesant Key Club member, also achieved some very high, (and some perfect) scores on his fantastic singing abilities. Everyone also sang a popular chinese song which Ted could not join in on, (Although Ted got the last laugh by singing Gee by SNSD). All in all, it was a fantastic day that was well worth it, we had fun for an amazing cause!

Halloween Fundraiser Ted Kalis, Dedicated Key Clubber Immediately after we entered the haunted house, a member of our group, Michael, was taken away from us and transported to the other side of a thick wall. He was forced to scream "Help!" so that others would be able to know where he was. Afterwards, the group was frightened as scary people came up to us, something that happened for the rest of the haunted house experience. Some of them told us about their past and some even threatened us. We then arrived to a location which looked like a subway. There was a man with a gun pointed at us. At this point, everyone was completely terrified. We later found ourselves in a room where I was shoved onto a bed and then had my head pushed into a toilet. The only thing that kept me from screaming was Jasmine's laugh. Afterwards, we were all blindfolded and pushed to another scary location where the ceiling was dripping blood. Eventually, we made it out of what was the scariest house of our lives!

October Service Events

Ted Kalis, Dedicated Key Clubber Standing at the corner, ready to deliver instructions. Viewing all, from the fastest to the slowest. That was the fun of attending New York City’s 2nd annual Cupcake Run! Taking place at Astoria Park on October 18th, 2014, runners had to complete a 5 kilometer run while stopping to consume 3 cupcakes. Volunteers were stationed at the three cupcake stations and at pivotal points throughout the run to keep the runners on course. The people who ran the event were very inviting and helped us do our part better! I, specifically, directed runners at the most confusing part of the race; where if they continued running straight ahead, they would run into the street outside of the park. We all pitched in and drew chalk drawings throughout the entire breadth of the course. The greatest part of the run was speaking to the runners. They all either said thank you for pointing them in the right direction, laughed at my terrible cheering, or gave me a high-five. Even while monitoring the runners, I was approached by some local runners with their questions! It was a very satisfying run to be a part of. It was wonderful to help establish a future event that future Key Club generations will volunteer at!

JDRF Walk Anonymous Key Clubber Today was the JDRF walk which was to help promote awareness of Type 1 Diabetes. The MTA was a bit slow so I arrived a few minutes late (we were suppose to get there by 8:00 AM). I ran all the way there and it turned out, the event started at 10:00 so I didn't even have to rush! At first, everyone just ate free food and I actually talked to a lot of people. I'm more of a unsocial type of person but people came up to me which made me feel a hundred times better! Timmy dressed as Pikachu which was very amusing! Everyone walked for about 3 miles and the whole way I was talking to a new friend I made. We talked about things that educated me about what Bronx Science and Key Club was all about. We even walked home together! It was really fun considering that I made a new friend AND there was food everywhere. Additionally, everyone was very happy and there were many cheerleaders who created so much positive energy. I'm looking forward to going to more Key Club events!!

Prospect Park Band Shell Anonymous Key Clubber Today was the Prospect Park Band Shell. Despite only four people going since the event was finalized the before, the event was super fun! At first, we helped with the setup. It was crazy because there were so many things to do and some tasks were much difficult than others. After that, the four of us were assigned to assist the kids. We had the job of encouraging them to make puppets, giving them candy, and taking pictures of random accessories! The walk started after that, which we unfortunately didn't participate it. Once everyone was about to come back, we were holding up banners and cheering them on because they made it!! Out of the four of us, I yelled the quietest because I am not use to screaming out :( On the other hand, the other three were very encouraging towards the walkers, which put a smile on everyone's faces. There was so much positive energy which made the event much more worthwhile. After that, we got to enjoy eating until the event came to a close. We helped with the clean up which was pretty fun as well! Overall, I had an extremely fun day with many memorable things happening. I can't wait to go to more events. :)

November Service Events

Emily Zhu, Dedicated Key Clubber On November 15, I attended the Leaf Crunch event at Van Cortlandt Park Compost Demonstration Site in the Bronx. At this event, we raked leaves to be composted. The coordinator divided all of the people into three different groups, each handling a part in the process of creating compost. I started out in the rake team. I worked with several others from Bronx Science to gather leaves and piled them on tarps to hand over to the next group. They were responsible for breaking the leaves into smaller pieces to be more easily used in compost. After an hour or so, we began to change roles. I moved to the group responsible for cutting up rotten green vegetables into small pieces to be used in compost. While being at this station, I was able to further chat with others from Bronx Science, including other freshmen, our current Key Club vice-president, Timmy, and even with other adults volunteering. I originally signed up for this event simply because I knew I was not as active in Key Club in the past month as I wished to be. I came to Leaf Crunch only knowing the task we were going to handle but did not really understand the reason and impact behind what we were going to do. At this event, I understood how going through these steps to create compost would help to create a greener and healthier environment. At this event I met so many people, even ones who were younger than me, that were willing to spare their time to help make a difference for the environment we live in. I definitely encourage more Key Clubbers to attend events such as this one and help make positive impacts on the environment.

November Divisional

Tenzin Amdo, Dedicated Key Clubber The November Divisional, which took place at HSMSE, was my first divisional and was a great experience. Although all divisionals are important, this particular one was even more significant because it was my first. I found it somewhat intimidating, yet inspiring. I learned that there are students beyond Bronx Science ones who are willing to put their time into helping others and making the world a better place. During this meeting, the board members held icebreakers to allow us to warm up to each other. The room was divided into two groups and each group took turns yelling the Key Club cheer, “I feel good! Oh, I feel so good! Aight!” The group that was louder won the icebreaker game. This was very exciting and gave me a warm feeling because it showed the passion those students had and made me think, “These are the types of people I would like to grow to become throughout my next few years as a high school student.” It amazed me because these students were able to be so lively despite the pressures of high school. I was moved and felt motivated to become a good Key Clubber, one who is able to manage her responsibilities as both a student and a volunteer.

"I met Ted in my sophomore year at a Fundraising Committee meeting. Although it was his very first activity as a Key Clubber, he contributed a lot by giving ideas and plans for fundraisers. From that point on, Ted has done nothing but shown an unwavering amount of passion for the club and open arms to anyone that shared this same passion with him" - Timmy Zhu

Ted Kalis 15'

Ted is one of my favorite seniors at Bronx Science. He's extremely nice and he has been really dedicated to Key Club. Ted has been always there to help me when I needed it. Ted is awesome ^^ -Jasmine Quindala

"Although Ted recently joined the club this year, his passion for Key Club is outstanding. He makes effort into going to whatever events he can even though he has to work during the weekends. Many will know him as the boy who is always early to an event. This is crucial since he makes himself a role model for others to look up to. Ted is also very reserved but once he meets someone new, he always makes an effort to say hi to him/her whenever he sees that person. This is a great trait as a member of Key Club since he does not try to exclude anyone in the club, even though he is minority. Ted is a great candidate for Member of the Month since he changes the lives of the community, the club and me. -Sandy Jiang
