THE KIWI BRONX SCIENCE KEY CLUB

VOLUME 8.6 SEPTEMBER EDITION, 2019

BELIEVE THAT THERE IS GOOD IN THE WORLD

EDITOR'S NOTE I hope everyone got through their first month of school smoothly! We welcome all of our new members that may have joined us this school year. Never be afraid to ask questions or to talk to any of us! Key Club isn't just a volunteer organization, we are a community. September is a month of adjustments and beginnings. We have many fun events and walks in the near future including our annual Breast Cancer Walk and Light the Night. In this issue, we will focus on how our club manages both work as well as finding the time to help improve our community. The work may have officially kicked in but that doesn't mean we can't find the time to continue volunteering. We will continue to work towards our goal of 14,000 hours as all of you continue to volunteer. This issue is here to showcase how many of you choose to take time out of your day to attend a event even with the constant stress of grades. This would not be made possible without the support and dedication of each and every one of you. Keep smiling and have a caring day.

Yours in service,

Rachel Lin

FLUSHING BID

Written by Jolin Zhou

THIS YEAR’S FLUSHING BID WAS A BIT DIFFERENT FROM LAST YEAR IN THAT THEY DECIDED TO GIVE VOLUNTEERS LUNCH TICKETS INSTEAD OF T-SHIRTS. THE LUNCH TICKETS HAS FOUR DIFFERENT TENTS ON IT AND WAS GIVEN TO VOLUNTEERS SO THEY CAN GO TO ONE OF THE TENTS TO EXCHANGE FOR ONE SERVING OF FOOD. IT DIDN’T REALLY WORK OUT VERY SMOOTHLY BECAUSE IT SEEMED THAT MANY OF THE TENTS DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT THIS TICKET OR WAS UNWILLING TO GIVE THE VOLUNTEERS FOOD. REGARDLESS OF THAT, THE EVENT WAS REALLY NICE. THE COORDINATOR AND SOME TENT WORKERS WERE VERY WARM TO US. MOST OF THE WORK DONE WAS IN THE MORNING WHERE VOLUNTEERS HAD TO HELP SET UP THE TENTS, GUARD THE ENTRANCE, AND GUIDE PEOPLE INTO THE EVENT. ONCE THE EVENT STARTED, VOLUNTEERS CAN JUST WALK AROUND TO HELP TENTS WHO NEEDS HELP. AFTER THE EVENT ENDED, VOLUNTEERS ONLY NEEDED TO DO SOME BASIC CLEAN-UP AND THE CLOSING OF THE TENTS AND SUCH ARE DONE BY WORKERS HIRED BY THE COORDINATORS. IT WAS NICE TO SEE ALL THESE DIFFERENT TYPES OF PRODUCTS AND FOODS IN DIFFERENT TENTS; I ESPECIALLY LOVED THE SUGAR PAINTING.

FLUSHING BID

Written by Caleb Oh

FLUSHING BID WAS AN EVENT CONDUCTED ON SEPTEMBER 14TH TO HELP ORGANIZATIONS ATTRACT NEW PEOPLE AND TO MAKE MONEY. THERE WERE TWO SHIFTS FOR OUR SCHOOL, THE MORNING SHIFT (6:3012) AND THE AFTERNOON SHIFT (12-6). I ATTENDED THE AFTERNOON SHIFT. THOSE WHO ATTENDED THE MORNING SHIFT HELPED SET UP STANDS AND FOLLOWED ORDERS FROM THE COORDINATORS. THOSE WHO WENT TO THE AFTERNOON SHIFT HELPED AROUND AND MADE SURE EVERYTHING WAS GOING WELL. WE WERE ALSO ALLOWED TO SOCIALIZE WITH OTHERS DUE TO THE STABILITY OF THE EVENT. AROUND 5 P.M WE STARTED CLEAN UP WHERE WE MOVE GARBAGE TO THE DESIGNATED AREA AND HELP BREAK DOWN THE TABLES. WE WERE ALSO GIVEN FREE FOOD AND OVERALL I BELIEVE THAT THIS WAS A FUN AND SUCCESSFUL EVENT.

ANIMALS!

ADOPTAPALOOZA 09/15/19

WRITTEN BY FARABI AZAD Adoptapalooza was a two-day event in which I volunteered for. The first day was the day where we had taken the equipment for the palooza out of the organization's storage facility. Volunteers helped tally up the total number of animal cages, food, tables, banners, etc. The organization's event coordinators were very impressed since were quick cutting the expected work time to take everything out of storage by several hours and treated us with pizza. The next day we came for the real event in Union Square. There were over 500 dogs, 400 cats, and 200 rabbits. We were helping set up, holding a tattoo/painting station, guiding people who were adopting pets, handing out flyers and frisbees. At the end of the day, all of the pets were adopted and we were once again treated to pizza.

STEP OUT WALK

WRITTEN BY WILLIAM WU ON SEPTEMBER 21ST, KEY CLUB ATTENDED THE STEP OUT WALK FOR DIABETES. WE HAD A HEARTY BREAKFAST NEXT TO THE HUDSON RIVER THAT WAS GENEROUSLY SPONSORED BY THE STEP OUT FOUNDATION. THEN, THE VOLUNTEER COORDINATORS HANDED US A COWBELL AND A T-SHIRT AND ASSIGNED US TO DIFFERENT PLACES ALONG THE ROUTE TO CHEER ON THE WALKERS. WE CHEERED ON MOSTLY ELDERLY WALKERS WHO HAVE HAD OR HAVE DIABETES. WHEN WE WALKED BACK TO THE VENUE AFTER THE EVENT WAS FINISHED, THERE WAS A PERCUSSION BAND CHEERING ON THE REMAINDER OF THE WALKERS. THE VENUE HAD DJS, GAMES, AND FREE THINGS FOR THE WALKERS, PASSERSBYS, AND VOLUNTEERS TO ENJOY. THE EVENT OVERALL WAS PRETTY FUN AND THE VIEW IN THE MORNING WAS DEFINITELY SOMETHING WORTH GOING TO THE EVENT FOR.

Community of Hope Lunch Program 09/21/19

Written by Shaon Barua The Lunch Program was aimed to aid the neighbors of a Manhattan church by providing them with free hot meals for the needy. Having already been to this event before, I walked in the building expecting to just serve the food they already had prepared for the guests. However, I ended up walking into one of the most engaging events I have ever been to with Key Club. At the event, we were tasked with making the actual food from its raw ingredients. This meant that I, having been asked to help make meatloaf, had to literally start from the ground beef, molding and seasoning the meat before I threw the pieces into the oven. There were other foods prepared by the volunteers, like pasta and salad. When they opened up for guests, us volunteers were then asked to serve the food to the public. It was pretty much a restaurant experience, as I had to go around, taking requests and delivering the desired food items to tables. Again, this was one of the most hands-on I have gotten out of a service event, and being able to cook and serve food to the public was a new and pretty intriguing experience.

WALK TO END ALZHEIMER'S 0 9 / 2 8 / 1 9

WRITTEN BY TIFFANY TSAI Today, September 28th, 2019, I volunteered at the Alzheimer’s walk in Corona Park, Flushing. I initially helped out at the check-in tent, where volunteers and staff register the walkers in the system and distribute T-Shirts and wristbands. A few hours later, I helped at the craft area, where children come and paint small pumpkins. It was really fun guiding them through decorating process and seeing how happy they are. At around 11, the walk began, and volunteers cleaned up the tents and tables. When the walkers came back, granola bars, apples, chips, and water are distributed to them. It is very empowering seeing so many people showed up and raise awareness and money for Alzheimer's Research.

BXSCI & HSMSE'S TIE DYE FUNDRAISER

WRITTEN BY ANNA YE THE TIE DYE FUNDRAISER WAS SO MUCH FUN TO BOTH PLAN AND ATTEND. WE STARTED OFF WITH PINCHING OUR TSHIRTS IN THE CENTER SO THAT IT WOULD FOLD INTO A SWIRL, THEN TYING IT WITH RUBBER BANDS AND DIPPING IT INTO WATER. AFTER THAT WE GOT TO DESIGN THE SHIRT USING DYE IN WHATEVER COLORS THAT WE WANTED. WE ALSO ATE SOME YUMMY SNACKS AND HAD FUN WITH ENDING THE DAY THROUGH A PICNIC! IT WAS A GREAT WAY TO HANG OUT WITH FRIENDS FOR THE LAST TIME BEFORE SCHOOL STARTED AND CATCH UP ON OUR SUMMER ACTIVITIES.
