"Nothing’s perfect, the world’s not perfect, but it’s there for us, trying the best it can. That’s what makes it so damn beautiful." - Roy Mustang

EDITOR'S NOTE Welcome back! Long time no see :)) This past month has been both so stressful but surreal. I can't believe we're all back in person, sitting in classes, and of course, shoving our way through the main hallway once again. For the new members, hello! This is a monthly newsletter that our club releases where we recap the amazing service of our members, with future events and links sprinkled throughout. If you go to events, submissions are always welcomed ;) As school is slowly being kicked into high gear, sit down, relax, and take care of yourself. And the best self care is going to Key Club events with friends and serving others! ~Laura Pong '22

REVITALIZATION AT CROTONA PARK

BRONX RIVER FOODWAY The Bronx River Foodway event was by far my favorite event so far this service year. We got to explore the edible garden, try a drink made with freshly harvested sweet herbs, and spent the day tidying up the green space. Our community being in NYC can sometimes be tiring, so suddenly being exposed to fresh soil and clean air was so refreshing, despite it being in a concrete plant park. It was a small tucked away paradise, and the volunteers that showed us around and worked with us helped to understand the garden’s significance. I would definitely love to do more work with the Bronx River Alliance, whether in Key Club or not. It was definitely a highlight of the school year and being able to spend the whole day with my friends and peers surrounded by butterflies and other wildlife was amazing to experience. -- Finley Heesch '23

MAD FOR FUN GARDEN

I attended the Mad for Fun Garden, and needless to say, it was very fun and enjoyable! While this was not my first time doing a gardening event, I still enjoyed helping clean the area and de-weed the area! Some of my friends also came to this event as well, so this was also a productive hangout as well! --Linh Luu '23

The Packing Meals on the Intrepid event was so much fun! While the event wasn’t as long, two hours to be exact, it felt like it was. The time I spent there was a mix of bagging food for it to be scaled and putting food into these bags, in which it sounds mundane, but it made me so awake in the evening. I was able to learn how to team up and sync with the volunteers from the key club who went as well. The hair nets were also a fashion accessory, where when the organizers started to clean up the event, we had a blast taking pictures of how ridiculous we look! I am looking forward to events similar to this in the future! -- Linh Luu '23

Emergency Food Program 14

Even though this event was very short, I had a blast! Since the event was very early, I was able to carpool with some friends and vibe with them. But during the event, the food packing was very straightforward, and we were able to finish the tasks quickly and efficiently as well! The organizer was also very kind and gave clear directions, so there was no confusion at all during the event. I had fun, but not sure if I would like to wake up that early for an event though! -- Linh Luu '23

Chinatown Beautification Day

Chinatown Beautification Day was so much fun!! I was showing a friend around at their first Key Club event, and I’d definitely say that this event was worth bringing them to! Key Clubbers from schools all over D11 and more joined the Chinatown Youth Initiatives for eight hours to listen to guest speakers, participate in panels/workshops, and help clean up Columbus Park and other streets in Chinatown from any litter we found. They gave out free t-shirts and dumplings-- and not only were the t-shirts really cool-- but it was also funny watching old grannies in Chinatown call their friends over because “a bunch of kids were giving out free dumplings at the park”. There was so much time allotted for us to just explore Chinatown and get to know the other volunteers there, and I definitely feel like I would’ve regretted it if I missed this opportunity. -- Shiya Lin '23

Chinatown Beautification Day 16

On September 18th, I attended my first two key club in-person events. Luckily they were on the same day--Emergency Food Program and Chinatown Beautification Day, both of which are located in Manhattan. I was able to attend the events with my friends and not only was the weather extremely friendly, it was also super fun “ exploring” Manhattan with them between the two events. Specifically, I want to talk about Chinatown beautification day one. There were a lot of people from other schools that also attended this event, and we each got a shirt as a symbol of our participation and a souvenir per se. The service project was to help clean up the surrounding streets of Chinatown. The event itself was very fun and meaningful, I was also able to take lots of pictures and try out new foods, it was also a new experience for I was out nearly the whole day. At the end of the day I walked around 28k steps but I didn’t feel tired at all because of how much fun I had. I would definitely attend this event again! -- Derek Dong '23

Chinatown Beautification Day

I attended Chinatown Beautification Day, and I am already excited for next year’s! The check-in process was super clear and the free t-shirt is a cute souvenir (just to flex). The actual event consisted of listening to the organizers, workshops, and cleaning up the area as part of beautification. I was able to meet people doing this nonprofit, in addition meeting people from other schools, such as Goldstein and Brooklyn Tech! This event was very fun and I had a great time! -- Linh Luu '23

LITTLE PARK FOREST AMBASSADORS On the 19th of September, I attended the “Forest Park Litter Ambassadors” event. At this event, Key Clubbers were called to help clean up Forest Park by picking up litter. Surprisingly, I was the only one attending. Usually, there are many Key Clubbers who attend each event but since this event was the weekend after the first week of school, I assume that everyone was too busy with school to attend. Even though I was the only one attending, it was still a really nice event! All necessary supplies were provided by the event organizers and it was a really simple event. The weather was nice so it was a great day to explore the park, pick up litter, and talk to my friends through calls. The event was short and wasn’t very exhausting so after the event, I decided to walk home instead of taking the bus. It was a really relaxing event and I would definitely do it again! -- Melody Jiang '24

CHARITY MILES

I was first introduced to Charity Miles by Key Club! I knew that there were apps that were able to track how far you traveled over a certain period of time, but I had no idea you were able to support charities by doing something you do everyday: walking! Charity Miles is an app that allows you to raise money for organizations of your choice through miles you accumulate while walking, running or biking. For anyone who has a long commute to and from work or school, I’d recommend that you use Charity Miles even outside of Key Club to contribute to causes you care about. I will forever be grateful for the opportunities that Key Club offers to allow all of us to be more proactive in our communities! -- Chloe Yip '23
