EDITOR'S LETTER This past service year has been full of interesting surprises. Bronx Science Key Club reached a number of milestones, whether it was our ten thousand hour service goal or our six thousand dollar fundraising goal. Even besides the numbers, members' contributions have been astronomical, setting the bar high for the future. Key Club's impact is amazing and each member plays a vital role in the club's success.
that the club does. Whether it be Climb to the Top NYC or NYSoM Easter Extravaganza, Bronx Science Key Clubbers demonstrate an enormous passion for service. From going to the Hex Board Game Fundraiser or by signing petitions, advocacy for important causes is on par to nothing else.
And so, as one service year ends, a new one begins, leaving infinite possibilities for improvement. This new service year will bring many things. Hopefully it will be better than all of the previous years.
No one knows what the next year will be like, but so far things are looking up. When thinking about how we are all going to improve, it is important to consider everything we have already done. Then we must think about how significant each of our choices are and how they affect other people. After that, all we have left to do is learn from those things and act towards creating a better future.
In this issue of the Kiwi, you'll be able to see everything that Key Club has to offer. Leadership, character, caring, and inclusiveness are displayed in everything

Meet the New Board!
PRESIDENT
Megan Ngo This service year I've been given the tremendous opportunity to lead YOU, Bronx Science Key Club-to make it our best service year yet. My goal is to create an environment that makes our members proud of who they are and what they do, bettering the community. I want our club to inspire its members, from our school and throughout the tri-state area, to push comfort zones and to try something they never thought possible. It's the community we create at Bronx Science that makes our members proud to show off their club. It's through implementing more inter-clubbing events, KFamilies, and sponsoring more service project opportunities during meetings that will push us to the next level in terms of bettering our club. Key Club has always been a place to realize that a love for service can bond you, but it's the relationships you build that takes you farther. Every Key Clubber has a unique story, each one slightly different. Let's create stories that will last a lifetime, with people that are all equally passionate about the same thing. Let's make it the best service year yet! NGOM@BXSCIENCE.EDU
VICE PRESIDENT
Pinkey Lam Hey Bronx Science Key Club! I am both so proud and lucky to be serving all of you as vice president for the 2018-2019 service year. I am a very outgoing person and I love meeting people (so don’t be afraid to talk to me whenever!!) Members are what makes our club so great, that's why I really hope I get to know everyone as the year progresses! When I joined Key Club in my freshman year, I was immediately drawn to it. The people I met at my first event were so full of spirit and enthusiasm, it encouraged me to put myself out there and be like them. One of my favorite things about being a Key Clubber is having the power to make people smile. To be able to experience this is truly amazing and it is something that I can never forget. My goal for this service year is just to make sure to everyone is having fun. I want this year to be filled with service, bonding, and appreciation for everyone around you. As your vice president, I will do my best managing the committees and be on top of everything. I will do everything I can to support the club and make sure that this year will be one to remember. THANK YOU <33 LAMP@BXSCIENCE.EDU
SECRETARY
Akaneh Wang Hello friends! My name is Akaneh, and I will be your secretary for the next service year! I am half Chinese and half Japanese, and one of the worst moments of my life was when I fell into a frozen pond. I live in Bayside, Queens, and I went to M.S. 74. My favorite genre of music at the moment is lofi and vaporwave! I joined Key Club in the second half of my freshman year, and I’ve been volunteering ever since. My biggest goals for this year as secretary are to be efficient and complete all of my work on time or earlier. I will try my best to update points and hours in a timely manner. As a person, my goals for this year are to talk to more people and make more friends. Feel free to talk to me about anything, and cheers to a new service year!
WANGA@BXSCIENCE.EDU
TREASURER
Noshin Shakawat Hey Bronx Science Key Club! My name is Noshin Shakawat and I am your new treasurer for the 2018-2019 service year! Here are some facts about me: I am currently a junior, I was the fundraising co-head (alongside my BFF Aaron Wu) for the last service year, and I’M A BAKER (if you saw our video for LTC and got that reference, I love you). I’m so excited to be working with the board and making this year successful. To do so I have some goals I want to achieve. To start, this year’s fundraising goal is $6,000! I know that sounds like a lot, but we can do it! I want to have at least one fundraiser a month except during heavy testing times. As treasurer, I want to have a better relationship with our parent club, Riverdale Kiwanis. Hopefully, by doing so, they can get more involved and help us with more large-scale fundraisers that will propel us closer to our fundraising goal! Let's make this year one of BxSci Key Club’s best!

WEBMASTER & BULLETIN EDITOR
Katherine Doss The work Key Clubbers do in and out of the club is phenomenal. The passion and dedication from Bronx Science members is unmatched. As Webmaster and Bulletin Editor I get to showcase all of the wonderful service you do through newsletters and the website. It is truly an honor. This year I want to work with you guys in order to improve the quality of newsletters and update the website in order to make it more accessible. I hope to release more frequent newsletters and ensure that the website always has information that can help you with your day to day activities within the club. Articles are important for members because they can help them decide whether or not an event is right for them. I hope to make it easier for all members, new and old, to sign up for events and spread the joy of volunteering.
DOSSK@BXSCIENCE.EDU
Michele Chen IP President
My favorite thing about Key Club is how diverse our events are. I love that service is a broad category and that there will always something for everyone. Unlike other organizations, Key Club has members that volunteer wherever help is needed. We do not only do walks and we do not only do food pantry events - we do them all because, at the end of the day, we want to promote the well being of our community in every way we can. I know for me, attending Key Club events has helped me get a better understanding of the extent of homelessness in our city, learn about what leukemia is and how it affects children, and the numerous other diseases that affect millions of people. I joined Key Club 4 years ago and I never would have imagined I would be the person I am now. It’s been a journey full of ups and downs, but in the end, I’m glad for all of the experiences. It’s because of Key Club that I have the relationships I have now with everyone around me. It’s because of events every weekend that I’m more aware of everything that goes on in our community and the changes that need to be made. I am so proud of our club for serving almost 11,000 hours, for raising over $5,000, and for signing petitions in just a couple months. I’m so proud of you for being so involved in our community. Continue to be the great community members you already are and talk to as many people as you can at events because you’ll never who you come across or what you’ll learn. Thank you for everything this service year. You guys deserve the world and more because you give our community all you can give despite being stressed, broke high school students. ❤
Dante Schulz IP Vice President
Hey everybody!!! I just want to say that it has been a roller coaster ride in this club. I still remember signing up at my freshmen orientation in June and getting my first Key Club emails over the summer. I had no idea what anything meant and when I went to sign up for my first event in October, the “do you want to be project captain?” question confused me to the point where I almost didn’t sign up. But I’m glad I did. Light the Night really convinced me to stay in the club and I still look back on it and remember the lanterns lit in the park and the upperclassmen huddled around one slice of pizza to share. Fast forward to the end of the year when I ran for Projects Committee Co-Chair. I almost didn’t sign up because I didn’t think I could handle the responsibility, but I’m so grateful Timmy and the rest of the board encouraged me to do so. Being Projects Committee Co-Chair taught me how to reach out and network, how to be professional and talk to adults and I’m so proud to have worked as the link between our club and the outside world. Being your secretary and vice-president has also been a memorable experience. Having the opportunity to serve all of you and be there for you makes up for all of the stressful nights and worrisome pre-meetings. Whether it was traveling on the subway at 2 in the morning covered in pink dust after a key event or running in the rain wearing trash bags because we wanted Popeye's, Key Club has given me some of my most valued lessons, my best friends, and memories I will carry with me forever. Thanks Bronx Science Key Club for everything you’ve given to me and I know you will continue to give back to your members just as you have done for me.

CLIMB TO THE TOP NYC
Climb to the Top NYC was unlike any other event I have been to. Instead of a run, participants had to climb all the way to the Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center, which was pretty cool. This was a pretty early event, but the event wasn’t that far away from me, so it was alright. Once I got to the train station, I headed down the mezzanine that led directly to the volunteer check-in table near the ice skating rink. I was the project captain for this event, so I waited for the other volunteers to arrive, while the coordinator gave us each a volunteer shirt, lei, and bells to cheer on the runners. I had attended this event in my freshman year, so I was familiar with what we were supposed to do. The coordinator brought us all to a hallway filled with shops that weren’t open yet, where the finish line was. Our job as volunteers was to cheer on these participants and make a lot of noise as they walked down the aisle, celebrating their accomplishment. It was very fun, as I was able to meet other volunteers that were cheering with us, and some volunteers from LaGuardia and Brooklyn Tech Key Club were there as well. We had to be very enthusiastic and every time runners walked down the aisle after exiting the elevator, we would give it our all and cheer for them. We did this for one or two hours until one of the event coordinators asked for assistance to cheer at the Top of the Rock. A couple of other volunteers and I were selected to go up. We were stationed next to a huge clock that recorded the time as the runners finished. Every once in a while, one of the runners would ask us to take a picture of them and their friends or family. Later, I got put in the water station where we handed out and restocked water. There, I got the opportunity to meet other volunteers, and I was able to meet people from Circle K, who were volunteering there as well. Overall, Climb to the Top NYC was a very enjoyable and memorable event that I won’t forget. -Wesley Mui
CALVARY HOSPITAL BIRTHDAY PARTY
THE MONTHLY CALVARY HOSPITAL BIRTHDAY PARTY THAT OUR CLUB ATTENDS WITH RIVERDALE KIWANIS IS MY FAVORITE EVENT. NOT ONLY WAS IT THE FIRST EVENT THAT I WAS ABLE TO MEET WITH OUR SPONSORING KIWANIANS, BUT I’M ABLE TO MEET WITH SOME OF THE MOST INTERESTING AND NICEST PEOPLE. THE EVENT IS HELD IN THE EVENTS ROOM AT THE HOSPICE AND THE PATIENTS ARE BROUGHT DOWN FROM THEIR ROOMS, WHERE THEY ARE COOPED UP IN ALL DAY, TO CELEBRATE THE BIRTHDAYS OF THE PATIENTS FOR THAT MONTH. AT THE EVENT, I SPOKE WITH A MAN ABOUT HIS LIFE IN THE BRONX AND HIS CHILDHOOD AND I WAS THANKFUL THAT I WAS ABLE TO KEEP HIM COMPANY AND LISTEN TO HIS STORIES. HOWEVER, THE BEST PART OF THE EVENT IS WHEN WE SERVE THE CAKE BECAUSE THE PARTY ATTENDEES LOVE THE FOOD AND GET REALLY FESTIVE WHEN IT’S SERVED AND THE MUSICIAN PLAYS. OVERALL, CALVARY HOSPITAL BIRTHDAY PARTY WILL BE THE EVENT THAT I WILL MOST CHERISH AFTER I LEAVE KEY CLUB. - DANTE SCHULZ
PROJECT CICERO On March 11th, I attended Project Cicero, which remains one of my favorite events from the last service year. When I first arrived at the event, I was told to be the lifter. As the lifter, I was responsible for disposing empty boxes and relocating ones filled with books when told. Since I was the book organizer last year, and enjoyed that a lot more than lifting boxes, I quickly became the book organizer instead. For this role, I had to travel throughout the room, sorting the books based on their genre and age level. Being a book organizer was really fun because I got to see the many books that exist in this world. From childhood classics to books I’ve read in high school, there were tons of books that brought back memories. There were also books that I’ve never seen before, and that just builds up my interest in books. Last year, I worked with book enthusiast and former Bronx Science Key Club president Yingchao He and her love
of books really touched me and made this event a lot more exciting than it would have seemed at first. Although I was only supposed to stay for three hours this year, I stayed for six because I genuinely love this event. I owe my thanks to Yingchao. Finally, I just want to leave off with the main reason that made this event so special. I’ve been to countless numbers of community service events that have shown me what it means to put a smile on someone’s face, and this event is one of the most direct definitions of it. While organizing the books, you’ll see hundreds and hundreds of teachers, book enthusiasts ,or parents searching for books to give children in need. Technology has come a long way, but looking at them scavenging for books just provokes so much happiness in me. It feels especially nice when they smile after finding that one special book. That feeling makes me feel warm on the inside. At the end of the event, after hundreds of books are taken by the participants, we all celebrate our love for literature. Because of that, even though I’m allergic to the dust produced by the piles of books, I love this event. - Aaron Wu
On a windy and chilly morning, I made my way into Central Park through the West Side. We were greeted with NYPD officers equipped with metal detectors as it was considered a high security event. The registration tent was filled with volunteers waiting to be assigned positions. We received name tags with the names crossed off for some weird reason. Refreshments, which consisted of hot chocolate, coffee, bagels, donuts, and various sandwiches, sat outside. Soon, we were led to the water station where runners who had just finished the United Airlines Half Marathon could drink as much water as they needed. The light reflecting off of their heat sheets was very blinding and there were a sea of runners with red faces, gasping for water. It was a pretty easy-going event as there were a lot of volunteers for a really long water station that stretched for about half a mile. Our tasks were to keep the water station stocked and safe. - Daniel Huang
DOROT PASSOVER PACKAGE DELIVERY
I ended up being the first one that arrived at the event. First, we were seated in a waiting room where we signed forms. We were then escorted to another room where we were shown an orientation video which told us about the cause and how it DOROT affects seniors. The employee also gave us a rundown of how we should converse and treat the senior we visit. We were then given cards that showed the address and phone number of a senior. We walked to the DOROT headquarters to pick up the package and proceeded to go to our designated senior. We first dropped a package off and then walked thirty or so blocks to the next senior, who we talked to for about an hour. She was very welcoming to us. As we left she gave me newspapers that were published a few days after the terrorist attacks on 9/11. It was a very educational experience because she had a very intricate family history and showed us art from around her home, which she collected over her lifetime. I would recommend this event to anyone as DOROT has multiple package delivery events over the course of a year. -William Seong
Carl Schurz PARK EGG HUNT
MARCH 25TH, 2018 9 AM TO 3 PM
ON MARCH 25TH, I ATTENDED THE CARL SCHURZ PARK ANNUAL EGG HUNT. IT WAS HELD IN CARL SCHURZ PARK, WHICH IS IN THE UPPER EAST SIDE RIGHT NEXT TO THE MAYOR'S MANSION. IT WAS RUN BY THE CARL SCHURZ PARK CONSERVANCY, WHICH IS AN ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO PRESERVING THE PARK AS WELL AS HOSTING COMMUNITY EVENTS. THIS TIME, THEY WERE HOSTING THEIR ANNUAL EGG HUNT FOR CHILDREN, WHERE KIDS COULD HUNT FOR EASTER EGGS AND TAKE PICTURES WITH THE EASTER BUNNY. WHEN WE ARRIVED, WE WERE QUICKLY GREETED BY THE EVENT COORDINATOR AND GOT TO WORK. WE STARTED BY MOVING BOXES FILLED WITH EGGS OVER TO THE LAWN, AND ALSO TABLES FOR REGISTRATION AND OTHER ACTIVITIES. WE SOON GOT SNACKS AND THEN PROCEEDED TO SCATTER ABOUT ONE THOUSAND EGGS OVER THE FIELD. WE THEN CLEANED UP BROKEN EGG SHELLS AND PROCEEDED TO RE-EGG THE LAWN, FOR A TOTAL OF EIGHT TIMES. WE ALSO DIRECTED PEOPLE TO THE EASTER BUNNY, WHERE THEY COULD TAKE PICTURES. FINALLY, WE CLEANED UP THE EVENT AND BROKE EVERYTHING DOWN. THIS EVENT WAS AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE BECAUSE IT WAS UNIQUE. DESPITE BEING A DAUNTING TASK, EGGING THE LAWN WAS PRETTY FUN AND SOMETHING THAT I NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD DO AT A KEY CLUB EVENT. THE EVENT COORDINATOR WAS ALSO REALLY NICE AND THERE WAS AN ABUNDANCE OF SNACKS FOR VOLUNTEERS. THE BEST PART WAS TO SEE ALL OF THE KIDS RUNNING AROUND AND ENJOYING SOMETHING THEY MAY HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO TAKE PART IN. ALL IN ALL, I WOULD DEFINITELY GO TO THIS EVENT NEXT YEAR! -AKSHAY RAJU
NYSOM'S 6TH ANNUAL EASTER EXTRAVAGANZA
THE NEW YORK STATE OF MIND IS AN ORGANIZATION THAT IS DEDICATED TO IMPROVING THE LIVES OF THE PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITIES THAT IT SERVES IN. IT DOES THIS BY HAVING EVENTS THAT ARE FUN FOR THE COMMUNITY SUCH AS ITS ANNUAL EASTER EGGSTRAVAGANZA EVENT. I WANTED TO BE THE PROJECT CAPTAIN FOR THIS EVENT SINCE I PARTICIPATED IN IT DURING MY FRESHMAN YEAR AND REALLY ENJOYED IT. THE EVENT CONSISTED OF AN EGG HUNT, EGG RACES, EGG PAINTING, FACE PAINTING, AND A COOKIE DECORATING STATION. THE VARIOUS ACTIVITIES WERE SPLIT ACROSS FOUR GARDENS WITHIN A ONE BLOCK RADIUS. AT FIRST, I WAS ASSIGNED THE JOB OF MANNING THE BARRICADE SINCE THE STREETS WERE TO BE CLOSED OFF. I WAS WITH JACK JIN, SEAN XI, AND LUIS (SOMEONE FROM ANOTHER SCHOOL) AND WE HAD TO LET THE PEOPLE THAT LIVED ON THE BLOCK PASS THROUGH AND TELL OTHERS THAT THEY COULDN’T. PUTTING UP THE BLOCKADE WAS GOOD PUBLICITY FOR THE EVENT SINCE PEOPLE WERE WONDERING ABOUT WHAT THE BLOCKADE WAS FOR. AFTER SOME TIME, WE WERE SWITCHED FROM MANNING THE BLOCKADE TO HELPING OUT WITH THE EGG RACES. (WE LOST SEAN SOMEWHERE ALONG THE WAY.) THE RACES WERE REALLY HECTIC SINCE THERE WERE A LOT OF KIDS THAT WANTED TO DO THEM, BUT WE COULD ONLY ACCOMMODATE FIVE KIDS PER RACE. AFTER AN HOUR OR SO, JACK, LUIS, AND I WENT TO SWITCH WITH THE PEOPLE THAT WERE MANNING THE COOKIE DECORATING STATION. TO OUR SURPRISE, SEAN WAS ALREADY THERE MANAGING THE LINE FOR FACE PAINTING AND COOKIE DECORATING. MANNING THE COOKIE DECORATING STATION WAS ESSENTIALLY GIVING A PERSON A COOKIE AND LETTING THEM RUN WILD WITH THE FROSTING AND SPRINKLES. THEY CAME UP WITH THE MOST INTERESTING COOKIES, SOME WITH LAYERS ON LAYERS OF FROSTING, AND OTHERS WITH A MOUNTAIN OF SPRINKLES. THE PART THAT I THOUGHT WAS MOST FUN ABOUT THE COOKIE DECORATING WAS BEING TOLD TO “TAKE CARE” OF THE SUGAR COOKIES THAT WERE DISFIGURED OR BROKEN SINCE THEY WEREN’T ALLOWED TO BE DECORATED. WE HAD A TON OF COOKIES LEFT OVER AT THE END, SO MANY VOLUNTEERS WERE ABLE TO TAKE HOME BAGS OF COOKIES TO THEIR FAMILIES. THE COORDINATORS OF THIS EVENT WERE ESPECIALLY NICE AND VOLUNTEERS WERE GIVEN A SLICE OF PIZZA AFTER THE EVENT FOR THEIR HARD WORK. OVERALL, THIS WAS AN EXTREMELY FUN EVENT AND I WOULD RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE THINKING ABOUT GOING! -KEVIN CHAN
SERVICE CARE FOR THE
PROJECT: PACKAGES HOMELESS
MARCH 3 RD, 2018 10 AM TO 12 PM
HEX & CO. FUNDR AISIER
The Hex and Co. Fundraiser was essentially a fundraiser where you can play board games for 2 hours at the Hex and Co., the only board game cafe in the Upper West side. Now, I know that for many people board games sound like a really lame thing to waste your time on. However, for me, board games are a way to get to know others and a means to get people to disconnect from technology. With today’s vast internet and connectivity, there’s hardly ever time for people to share a moment that isn’t on social media. The turnout for fundraiser was small, with less than 20 people, but that was okay because everyone that went got to know each other as we played many non traditional board games, such as Secret Hitler, Joking Hazard, and Scattergories. Playing all those games were fun, but I think the most memorable moment of that entire fundraiser was what came afterwards. After the event was over, everyone went to go get lunch. About 10 of us went around the Upper West side looking for a Mexican restaurant because we were all craving burritos, tacos, and nachos. We were that loud, obnoxious group of teenagers walking around in public, but we didn’t care; we were enjoying each other's company, and that's always one of the goals I have whenever I set out to make a fundraiser. -Noshin Shakawat Fundraising Co-Head '17-'18
member of the month
waly ndiaye
"he is truly inspiring and serves as a model key clubber" IT COMES AS NO SURPRISE TO ME THAT WALY IS MEMBER OF THE MONTH BECAUSE HE EMBODIES THE KEY CLUB CORE VALUES AND IS ONE OF THE MOST DEDICATED MEMBERS I’VE EVER SEEN. WALY CONSTANTLY GOES TO EVENTS NO MATTER THE DISTANCE AND HE NEVER COMPLAINS ABOUT HIS ROLE AS A VOLUNTEER. I FIND THIS EXTREMELY ADMIRABLE SINCE IT REALLY DISPLAYS HIS DEDICATION AND LOVE FOR SERVICE. WALY IS ALSO NOT AFRAID TO TAKE UP LEADERSHIP POSITIONS AND THE WORK THAT COMES WITH IT. HE HAS BEEN THE PROJECT CAPTAIN FOR SEVERAL EVENTS IN THE PAST SERVICE YEAR AND HAS DONE A STELLAR JOB EACH TIME. WALY ALSO DEMONSTRATES THE KEY CLUB VALUES OUTSIDE OF VOLUNTEERING AND CLUB MEETINGS. I HAPPEN TO SIT NEXT TO WALY IN CHEMISTRY CLASS, AND HE IS ALWAYS WILLING TO HELP ME OUT WHEN I DON’T UNDERSTAND A CONCEPT OR PROBLEM. HE TRULY CARES ABOUT THE WELL-BEING OF OTHERS AND STRIVES TO IN ANY WAY THAT HE CAN. THIS IS EVIDENT IN THE NUMBER OF HOURS THAT HE HAS PUT INTO VOLUNTEERING AND THE POSITIVE ATTITUDE THAT HE BRINGS WITH HIM TO EVENTS. WALY’S POSITIVE ATTITUDE ENCOURAGES THOSE AROUND HIM TO HELP OTHERS AND HAVE FUN VOLUNTEERING AT THE SAME TIME. I THINK THAT HIS ATTITUDE IS TRULY INVALUABLE SINCE THERE AREN’T MANY PEOPLE THAT CAN ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO HAVE FUN WHILE VOLUNTEERING. FOR THIS, HE IS TRULY INSPIRING AND SERVES AS A MODEL KEY CLUBBER. WALY IS ONE OF THE BEST KEY CLUBBERS I KNOW AND I BELIEVE THAT HE TRULY DESERVES TO BE OUR MEMBER OF THE MONTH. -KEVIN CHAN
