The Kiwi: Volume 7.6 BRONX SCIENCE KEY CLUB SEPTEMBER 2018
No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another.
EDITOR'S LETTER Hellllllllooooooooo Bronx Science Key Club! If you're a new member that has just joined us this month, on behalf of everyone in the club, I bid you welcome. Key Club is an amazing community full of hardworking and very dedicated individuals. I'm so happy that you've decided to join us in our mission! It's the end of September. I hope you've all made a smooth transition into the new school year. No matter what grade you're in, things will seem tough, but I know you'll all fight through it and persevere. As the year progresses you may feel like there's no reason to put as much effort into your schoolwork as you initially thought, but keep up your hard work! It'll definitely pay off in the long run. (Especially when you get all those fives in May.) The rest of the board and I have very exciting
news! We're having a meeting on October 4th in the auditorium! Come to see your favorite club back in action. In this issue of the Kiwi, you'll see how members of Bronx Science Key Club chose to wrap up their summer. Morally guided in everything they do, our members gave it their all in August. So many members, both old and new, dedicated so much of their time to help others this month. It's an amazing feat and I'm so proud of each and every member. On behalf of the board, I'd like to wish you success in the rest of the school year and in everything after that. We're always here if you ever need anything, so don't be afraid to ask!
YOURS IN CARE AND SERVICE, KATHERINE DOSS

Summer Streets BY: KEVIN CHAN
Summer Streets is an event where a large portion of downtown Manhattan is closed off so that anyone can come to enjoy various activities. These include riding special bicycles, getting coconut water from stands, and even doing obstacle courses on bicycles. The pink shirt that was given to me for this Summer Streets was made with really good fabric and it was pretty cool. Sadly, my mom thought so too and decided to take it for herself. My job there was to direct oncoming traffic with a whistle and a large Stop/Go sign. It was pouring that day but the event coordinator provided ponchos, so it wasn’t as bad as it could’ve been. Summer Streets also gives out a free Nike drawstring bag to its volunteers so that really made the event for me. Overall I thought it was a good event.
BOOKSTORE CAFE HOUSING WORKS
BY: VANESSA FANG
At Housing Works Bookstore Cafe, there are rooms full of books. In these rooms, we searched for books that people ordered online. I thought it was really relaxing to spend hours doing this job. It got really enjoyable when we all began to race to see who would be the quickest at finding books. At the same time, we packed books and did some light cleaning in the bookstore. Since I was surrounded by books for many hours, I found some pretty interesting books to buy. I got a book for less than $5 and it was still in good condition. Overall, I would love to volunteer at Housing Works again because it was really fun.

Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Home of the US Open, the lackluster Mets, and the most important of all, the Hong Kong Boat Festival. On two days in early August, we helped run one of NYC's biggest cultural events. We timed races, worked on landside and waterside, gave out drinks, and volunteered through rain, wind, and the very muddy park. As one of the volunteers at Command team, I posted scores of the races, and sometimes suffered the wrath of angry contestants or celebrated with the joyous winners. By going to the event, I learned a lot about boat racing, something I probably would have never checked anyway. The Hong Kong Boat Festival was an event like no other and was a roller coaster ride from start to end.
Red Cross Smoke Alarms BY: XI YUAN ZHENG
On August 18, I attended the Red Cross Smoke Alarm event hosted at the Flushing Taiwan Center. Despite the early morning, when I got there the center was buzzing with volunteers all ready to help. The lively atmosphere was soon toned down when people of the center signaled everyone for a meeting. During the meeting, a member of the Red Cross explained how to differentiate between smoke alarms, the safest location to put the alarms, and how to install them. The experience was quite interesting because we were taught how to use a screwdriver and the type of screws used for certain surfaces. The Red Cross member even prepared a wall to demonstrate!! Not long after the meeting we were set on our ways to install alarms. I was disappointed when I found out that most volunteers including myself are underage, so we can’t carry out the installation. However, the Red Cross told us to hand out flyers to inform people in the community about the smoke alarms. It was nice to help bring awareness to the community about the fire safety. It made me feel that I am part of a big cause since each contribution meant a life will be saved from a fire in the future.Â
NYSOM BACK
TO
BONANZA BY: DANIEL HUANG
SCHOOL
HAVING ATTENDED LAST YEAR’S BACK TO SCHOOL BONANZA, I HAD AN IDEA HOW THINGS WOULD GO. I WORKED THE HOT DOG AND HAMBURGER LINE LAST YEAR GIVING TISSUES AND PLATES TO HUNGRY GUESTS THAT HAPPENED TO WALK BY. HOWEVER, THIS YEAR THEY IMPLEMENTED A STICKER SYSTEM WHERE FAMILIES HAD TO VISIT EACH GARDEN TO RECEIVE A STICKER. WHEN THEY HAD ALL 4 STICKERS, THEY COULD RECEIVE THE BACKPACK. I WAS STATIONED AT THE LAST GARDEN TO PLACE THE FINAL STICKER AND WATCHING ANTICIPATING KIDS COME IN MADE THE EVENT MORE LIVELY. AT THE END OF THE EVENT, THEY WERE GIVING OUT FINAL PORTIONS OF THE FOOD AND I GOT A PULL PORK SANDWICH WHICH WAS THE PERFECT END TO A WHIMSICAL EVENING. I WOULD GO TO THIS EVENT AGAIN IF I COULD WORK THE FOOD LINE BECAUSE I WOULD ALWAYS HAVE ACCESS TO CHICKEN WINGS AND HAMBURGERS. P.S. BACK TO SCHOOL BONANZA WAS MY FIRST EVER KEY CLUB EVENT BACK IN 2017.

BRONX SCIENCE WILL BE A LOT HARDER THAN YOUR MIDDLE SCHOOL, BUT DON'T WORRY! REACH OUT TO ANYONE IF YOU'RE STRUGGLING. (SOMETIMES IT MAY NOT SEEM LIKE IT, BUT ALL OF YOUR TEACHERS WANT YOU TO DO WELL.) EXPERIMENT WITH NEW STUDY STRATEGIES. IF YOU'RE NOT SURE WHAT'S BEST FOR YOU, TRY TALKING TO YOUR GUIDANCE COUNSELOR OR ANY UPPERCLASSMEN. ALSO: DON'T SKIP CLASS. EVEN FOR THE WORST CLASSES, IT'S MUCH EASIER TO SIT THROUGH 40 MINUTES DURING SCHOOL THAN TO SPEND AN HOUR OR MORE TEACHING YOURSELF AT HOME. DON'T FEEL PRESSURED TO DO ANYTHING YOU DON'T WANT TO DO JUST FOR COLLEGE APPLICATIONS. COLLEGES HONESTLY DON'T CARE IF YOU'RE IN A MILLION DIFFERENT CLUBS, THEY CARE ABOUT WHAT YOU DO IN THEM AND HOW MUCH YOU LIKE THEM. ONLY DO THINGS THAT YOU ACTUALLY LIKE BECAUSE YOU'LL BE HAPPIER AND MORE SUCCESSFUL AND THAT'LL SHOW!
