BRONX SCIENCE

Key Club CARING ~ OUR WAY OF LIFE

EDITOR'S LETTER Hi everyone! If this is your first newsletter, I'd just like to take a little time to welcome you to the club. Bronx Science Key Club is one of the most caring, dedicated, and passionate groups of high schoolers there is. I'm so happy you've decided to make us a part of your high school experience. If you have any questions or concerns about ANYTHING, make sure to let me or any other board member know because we'd love to do anything to make you more comfortable. This month we've done so much! I'm so proud of each and every member. I can already tell this is going to be a great year. Keep up the good work everyone, it's really going to pay off! Thank you to everyone that's been coming to our meetings. We've been sharing useful information that can clear up anything that

is unclear (like "Do you make keys?") so make sure to come! In this issue of the Kiwi, you'll see how members of Bronx Science Key Club started off the school year. Our strong start can only foreshadow our strength throughout the rest of the year. Our members are truly some of the best servant leaders of our generation. We're all so lucky to be in such a wonderful community of fellow volunteers, advocates, and all around wonderful people. Let's continue spreading our powerful message and helping others!

YOURS IN CARE AND SERVICE, KATHERINE DOSS

Volunteering isn’t all about just getting those hours. It’s also about actually helping people. On September 8th, I went to the Xavier Mission Soup Kitchen with my friend in order to volunteer. We carried boxes in an assembly line-like format and packaged perishable food. We conversated with the (mostly) friendly people who were at the event. Even though we encountered a few centipedes running across our hands, the overall experience was fun and after volunteering, it always makes you feel somewhat prideful of yourself. I will probably be participating in the next events as soon as possible.

Sakura Park Festival BY: ANTHONY LIM

During Sakura Park Festival, we helped set up Sakura Park for the festival, including chairs and tables. During the actual event, we were walking around helping individual stations around the event. We got tickets to buy food from the vendors at the event, which were all really tasty! This was also the first ever event that I went to, which was last year before freshman year even started :) At the end of the event though, we got poke bowls, which were all delicious :D. One thing I’ll always remember about this event is that it was my first event, and how far I gone since then.

NYC MEAL PACK By: Peter Alegre

Waking up early to volunteer on a day off wasn’t easy. But seeing how meaningful the cause was, and the impact I made - made the hour-long trek worth it. 7:00 AM in the morning - I wasn’t sure if I would even get there on time or if it would be worth it only volunteering for two hours. Regardless, I made a commitment to volunteer and headed out. Heading to registration after having some coffee and good donuts from Underwest Donuts, I see hundreds of volunteers heading inside a boat to pack food. The event took place at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum on Pier 86. The Intrepid is of course a military and maritime museum, with the titular USS Intrepid being the boat we climbed into. Going inside a huge aircraft carrier was astonishing itself, but the organized assembly line they had to pack meals and my part in it too was equally amazing. I and another volunteer were assigned separate jobs in one of the food packing assembly lines. It was my responsibility to measure the oats to a specific amount so they can be packed and shipped. Over the course of the shift, we had several moments of silence and multi-denominational blessings and prayers that added to my experience as a volunteer and to the cause. The ball got rolling quickly and while I could barely hear myself over the commotion, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I even got interviewed by a news station afterward! I didn’t think an event that I signed up on a whim, where it was only me and another volunteer, could have an impact on me like that. It reminds me of that old naivete I had coming to events, never knowing what to expect but always enjoying it. I’m guilty of it but don’t judge an event by it’s cover. Service is ALWAYS rewarding, any way you put it.

AUTISM SPEAKS WALK September 16, 2018

BY: SAMAMA MOONTAHA

The Autism Speaks Walk was an incredible event, not only because of its amazing cause, but also with the way it brought together strangers through something we’re all passionate about. Our group was split up, some of us went along as marshals to support our walkers, while others stayed at the front of the pier to guide entrees. Honestly, I wasn’t too enthusiastic about the idea of having our group split up or for my position, staying at the front. Through hearing my job description, I lost quite a bit of interest and expected a boring experience pointing people to directions and handing out flyers. I didn't realize how wrong it was to assume things just by the look of things in my life. The first 30 minutes were long, but after that we got very close with the volunteers around us, using our Pom Poms to create cheers, urging the walkers to keep going and brightening the days of the common commuters. It was incredibly fun and outstanding to realize that our enjoyable experience was actually making such a big difference in so many lives. The event was phenomenal, and the cause was awe inspiring. This really inspired me and my friends to come back to support other causes just as important, and of course to look out for this same event next year.
