The Kiwi: Volume 7.8 BRONX SCIENCE KEY CLUB DECEMBER 2018

PERSEVERANCE IS NOT A LONG RACE; IT IS MANY SHORT RACES ONE AFTER THE OTHER.

EDITOR'S LETTER I hope all of you are having a wonderful day! This service year has been going really well and it's been great having all of you in the club. I can't wait to make more memories together! I said this in my last newsletter, but my favorite thing about Bronx Science Key Club is that it is one of the most caring, dedicated, and passionate groups of high schoolers there is. I'm so proud and happy to be a part of it. If you have any questions or concerns about ANYTHING, make sure to let me or any other board member know because we'd love to do anything to make you more comfortable. October and November were such productive months! We accomplished so much and reached a record number of hours! The board is so proud of everyone and hopes we can

keep up the great work. On a similar note, thank you to everyone that's been coming to our meetings. We've been having a lot of fun and completing cool service projects, so if you haven't been attending, you should! In this issue of the Kiwi, you'll see how members of Bronx Science Key Club keep going strong. Based on everything we've already done, I'm sure we are going to make this service year a year to remember! This club is full of amazing people, doing amazing work and make a big difference. There's nothing better to do than help our community, so let's keep up the good work and stay positive!

YOURS IN CARE AND SERVICE, KATHERINE DOSS

UNITED BY BLUE JEFFREY ZHENG

The first thing I checked when I woke up was the time. 7 A.M., on a weekend, (not bad, eh?). It’s technically for a school event, I told myself, so I convinced myself to drag myself out of bed, which I also dreaded. Today was my first event ever with Key Club. At 10 a.m. I was ready to go. Getting to the place itself was an adventure, but with the divine tools known as Google Maps and messenger, I made it there in time. About right on time. There I met Aroni, the project captain for the event. She was... wait. She’s going to be reading this. In that case, she was AMAZINGLY COOL AND FUNNY. Yep. When I told her it was my first event, she was even cooler and explained to me about the event and Key Club in general. By then, the event was starting. After a nice encouraging and bolstering speech, we were given two choices: to go the end of the river, where trash is easily found and a much safer experience... or the other route, where we have to climb down a muddy hill just to get there and pick up trash on the dirt floor. Naturally, everyone else picked the treacherous route. Me, not wanting to go alone, went with them. I did not regret that decision. Before we went down we had to pick up this grabber, because hand grabbing trash is just way too slow. I had to get a new one because a lady said so. Down the hill, trash was spotted everywhere, so everyone got to work. We were given two bags, one for recycling, one for my social skills (sorry, trash). So off we started, just grabbing anything off the floor. You’d be surprised at what you find. There was actually a weird things contest, where people found the weirdest things. I remember finding an intact pot just there. That wasn’t my submission, though I forgot what I ended up submitting. It was probably... trash. (Mic drop, then hastily picking up the $100 mic). I remember there being a specific rule about needles and how to handle them. Basically, call someone to do it, because that needle could’ve been anywhere. Anyway, the good amount of the hours were just picking up trash and chilling. Near the end, the BxSci squad found a nice cove of new trash, so we spent more time picking it up. On the way there, however, was a duck. Whoa, right? They’re the ones that quack. When we saw him/her, it looked like it was scratching him/her’s neck, so we left it alone. Later, an adult came by, saw the duck, and told us it was dying. That turned the mood around quick. Some people were considering calling PETA, and others just tried to keep their distance, hoping to not disturb the bird more. We left, unsure of the duck’s fate. But hey, I got two hours though! (I sound heartless) The actual event breezed by, but the experience really stuck, especially the lesson about the trash and the effects on nature. And that, was my first event.

nyc lupus

" The walk was overall quite fun. Though we may have been freezing a whole lot, it somehow kept us going (crazy, right?). In the beginning, we were handing out wristbands to anyone we saw. Gathered up, everyone was split into trios and we were stationed down the route (Thankfully I wasn't too far). Plenty of cheering happened (and plenty of voice losses too!) for the next few hours. Stationed near a car club, we needed to organize the crowd when cars started passing by, it was somewhat tedious, to say the least. Coincidentally, I had managed to run into a few friends (and they somehow didn't see me the first round! I was in a bright neon construction jacket -.-). In the end, we cheered (screamed), froze, gave out dozens of wristbands, and supported the walk to end Lupus, which was a great (and tiring) experience.

BREAST CANCER WALK Each year, the American Cancer Society holds Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in order to raise awareness and funds to save lives from breast cancer. All of the donations from the event went towards funding research for cures, providing free information and support for those who need it, and help people reduce their breast cancer risk!

BIKE MS • By: Razia Islam •

On October 21, I attended the Bike MS event. I was a bit reluctant to attend this event seeing as it was a very cold day and we’d be working at a pier, which would’ve intensified the cold. I also had an AP Physics test first period the very next day, however, I decided to go anyway. I’m glad to have made this decision because the event was fun and knowing it was for a good cause made it even better. At this event, people biked in order to raise money for multiple sclerosis. Some even went as far as to bike 100 or so miles! Other than myself, there were around four or five other Bronx Science Key Club volunteers. Our job as volunteers was to hand out medals to bikers who crossed the finish line, cheer for them, and let them know where to go next. I didn’t know any of the volunteers who went besides my one friend but everyone there was so friendly and we happened to bond in our short time together. A great thing about going to Key Club events is that it helps you meet so many new and amazing people that you would’ve have met otherwise. Although we ourselves weren’t biking, it felt nice knowing we were helping the cause. This is true for many Key Club events, although we may not always be directly involved with the event (in this case, biking) we still help out in other forms and have fun doing so. You don’t always need to do something major to make an impact on the world.

STEPHEN OGUNBIYI ON OCTOBER 27, 2018, THROUGH THE ROUGH WEATHER AND TEMPERATURE, SEVERAL KIDS CAME TO A SITE IN HARLEM, OWNED BY A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION CALLED HARLEM GROWN. FOUNDED 7 YEARS AGO, IT IS AN ORGANIZATION THAT COOPERATES WITH THE COMMUNITIES THEY ARE LOCATED IN TO TEACH CHILDREN HOW TO BUILD HEALTHY LIFESTYLES AND SUSTAINABLE FOOD SOURCES IN A RELATIVELY SMALL URBAN SPACE. THOUGH THERE WAS EXTREME WEATHER, WE GOT AN OVERVIEW OF THE FARM AND WERE ALLOWED TO TASTE MANY OF THE VEGETABLES THAT WERE GROWING THERE. WE ALSO SAW SOME OF THE ANIMALS THEY HAD, AND FINALLY, THEIR COMPOST, WHICH WAS CREATED FROM FOOD SCRAPS, DEAD LEAVES, AND MICROORGANISMS (BACTERIA, FUNGI, WORMS). AFTER THIS, WE WENT INSIDE THE MUCH WARMER GREENHOUSE, WHICH USES A SYSTEM CALLED HYDROPONICS TO GROW THE PLANTS, WHICH ARE LATER TRANSPLANTED INTO THE MUCH LARGER FARMS. AT THE END OF OUR TOUR, WE RECEIVED BAGS OF VEGETABLES HARVESTED FROM THE FARM AND WE ARE ALWAYS WELCOME TO VOLUNTEER DURING THE SPRING AND SUMMER MONTHS. BEING MY FIRST KEY CLUB EVENT, IT WAS FUN AND EDUCATIONAL AND I MOST LIKELY WON’T FORGET IT.

PUPKIN By:

JESSICA ALONSO

WHEN I FIRST ARRIVED AT THE EVENT, I WAS REALLY EXCITED BECAUSE THERE WERE ALREADY A FEW DOGS IN THEIR CUTE COSTUMES WAITING IN LINE TO REGISTER FOR THE CONTEST. THEREFORE, FOR MY FIRST JOB I HAD TO WALK DOWN THE LINE OF CONTESTANTS AND ASK THE OWNERS IF THEY WERE ALREADY SIGNED UP FOR PUPS, THE OFFICIAL ORGANIZATION OF PUPKIN. ALTHOUGH IT MIGHT SOUND BORING IT WAS ACTUALLY A GREAT WAY FOR ME TO SEE THE DOGS IN THEIR COSTUMES BEFORE THE CONTEST HAD BEGUN. AFTER I HAD FINISHED MY FIRST JOB, I RETURNED BACK TO THE SIGN UP TABLE AND GAVE THE ORGANIZERS THE SIGN UP SHEET. THEY TOLD ME I HAD DONE A GREAT JOB, AND ONE OF THE LEADERS OF PUPKIN GAVE ME A GREEN SHIRT WITH THE PUPS LOGO ON IT. THIS MADE ME FEEL EXTREMELY HAPPY BECAUSE I FELT LIKE I WAS ACTUALLY CONTRIBUTING TO PUPKIN EVEN THOUGH ALL I WAS DOING WAS SIGNING UP PEOPLE FOR PUPS. BEFORE THE CONTEST HAD BEGUN, I, ALONG WITH OTHER KEY CLUB MEMBERS, WERE TOLD TO BE CROWD WATCHERS AROUND THE STAGE JUST IN CASE ANYONE GOT TOO CLOSE FOR SAFETY PRECAUTIONS. I WAS ABLE TO SEE AND TAKE PICTURES OF ALL OF THE DOGS IN THEIR COSTUMES BEFORE THEY GOT ONSTAGE, SINCE THE CONTESTANTS HAD TO LINE UP RIGHT NEXT TO WHERE I WAS STANDING. WHEN THE CONTEST HAD FINALLY ENDED AND THE WINNER WAS CROWNED, I HELPED CLEAN UP. OVERALL, VOLUNTEERING FOR PUPKIN AND SEEING ALL THE DOGS DRESSED UP IN THEIR HALLOWEEN COSTUMES WERE THE HIGHLIGHTS OF MY DAY.

LIGHT THE NIGHT Light the Night walks are dedicated to lighting our way towards a future where hundreds of people don't have to die from cancer. The funds from the walk are used to support the Leukemia % Lymphoma Society (LLS) which an organization that has dedicated itself to find cures and ensure access to treatments for people with blood cancer. They make it possible so that ALL blood cancer patients have access to treatment whether or not they can afford to pay the high medical expenses.

BEST BUDDIES FRIENDSHIP WALK November 3rd, 2018

It started off as a really dark day, with it threatening to rain at any point. I woke up late for the event and realized that I might have left Fahad alone to go to the event. I dashed out of the house and was lucky enough to get a ride from my parents. Although I was slightly late, I still checked in around the same time that Francis Lewis Red Cross did. Bronx Science Key Club stood at the entrance of the park directing people that were supposed to go to the walk inside the park. We also helped set up a few chairs for the VIP section. Before the walk started, we went out to a point along the path to act as marshals. We stood around directing people where to go and cheered people on, giving them high-fives and taking pictures with a few people. Although the sky didn’t look too nice, we were lucky enough to just have strong wind. After the event, we were provided with food and snacks, which was really nice of the hosts. Although I went to the event with lots of doubt, I came out really happy because of all the Key Clubbers I saw.

GOOD DEEDS GIVE AWAY

DOROTHEA DWOMOH

WITH THE HOLIDAYS APPROACHING, THERE IS A JOVIAL MOOD IN THE AIR. IT IS E SPECIALLY A TIME WHERE ACTS OF KINDNE SS ARE PORTRAYED AND CHARITABLE ACTS ARE SHOWN. AS PEOPLE CROWD TO ANITA’S WAY BETWEEN 42ND AND 43RD STREET IN NE W YORK CITY, THERE’S AN ABUNDANCE OF CLOTHE S TO BE GIVEN OUT. CLOTHES RANGE FROM COZY KNIT SWEATERS TO T-SHIRTS. THIS, ALONG WITH THE WINTER BOOTS AND HOUSEWARE APPLIANCES ARE BE ING GIVEN AWAY. THE PERK TO IT IS THAT ALL OF IT IS FOR FREE. DONATIONS WERE RECE IVED BY A LOT OF PEOPLE. ALL OF THE GIVEN THINGS WERE PUT IN BAGS FOR VOLUNTEERS TO SORT. PEOPLE CAME OUT ON A CHILLY DAY TO PACKAGE, SORT, AND DISTRIBUTE THE DONATIONS. THE SORTING DIDN’T TAKE LONG, BEING THAT THE RE WERE SO MANY PEOPLE WHO PARTICIPATE D. WITH THE SORTING DONE, VOLUNTEERS WERE ASKED TO ADVERTISE THE E VENT BY PLACING FLYERS AND CARDS THROUGHOUT THE STREE TS OF NEW YORK CITY. FLYERS WERE TAPED IN POPULAR AND BUSY SECTIONS OF NEW YORK AND WERE ALSO HANDED OUT TO PEOPLE IN NEED. EXCITED REACTIONS CAME OUT OF THOSE WHO WERE HANDED THE FLYER, AS IT WAS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO RE CE IVE FREE CLOTHES. THOUGH IT WAS FREEZ ING COLD, VOLUNTEE RS DEALT WITH IT AND KEPT ADVERTISING UNTIL NO MORE FLYERS WERE LEFT. SOON AFTER COMING BACK, THE PLACE WAS FILLED WITH HAPPY VISITORS, LOOKING THROUGH CLOTHES, AWED AT ALL OF THE OPTIONS. THERE WERE PEOPLE ON DUTY TO HELP THOSE WHO NEEDE D TO FIND SOMETHING SPECIFIC IN MIND OR HAD TROUBLE FINDING THE RIGHT THINGS. WITH THE HOLIDAYS NEAR, IT DOES NO HARM TO DO A GOOD ACT OR DEED. IN THIS CASE, BY DONATING CLOTHES AND OTHER THINGS, AND ALLOWING THOSE WHO ARE LE SS FORTUNATE TO USE THEM, IT’S A NICE WAY TO GIVE BACK AND TO MAKE THE HOLIDAYS A LITTLE ME RRIER.
