CARING OUR RLIFECARING WAY OF L OUR WAY O OF LIFECARI ING OUR WA AY OF LIFEC CARING OUR RLIFECARING WAY OF L

EDITOR'S LETTER Guys! We only have one more month left in the service year! Congratulations!!! This year we've done so much and even recently surpassed out service hour goal. The board and I are so happy and proud of this amazing club. No other group of teenagers would be so dedicated as to volunteer more than eleven thousand hours for those in need. You could have been studying, hanging out with friends, or working a job, but you chose to dedicate your time to the service of others. For that, we're so grateful. With the Leadership Training Conference fast approaching, my time as Webmaster and Bulletin Editor is coming to an end. This is most likely going to be my last newsletter, so I just want to say thank you to everyone that helped me complete my newsletters and read them. It's been so fun

showing the club's service in this format and I've enjoyed every day of it. I'm sad to say goodbye, but I know Rachel will do a fantastic job next service year. In this issue of The Kiwi, you'll see the continued passion that Bronx Science Key Clubbers have for service. Only our club could stay this dedicated to helping others and it really shows! This club is full of amazing people, doing amazing work and make a big difference. There's nothing better to do than help our community, so let's keep up the good work and stay positive!

YOURS IN CARE AND SERVICE, KATHERINE DOSS

SATURDAY SPRUCE UP BY: MATTHEW HE

Saturday Spruce-Up was around 3 hours long and ended at around 1 PM. We went to a park and raked leaves, put them into big plastic bags, and carried them down the stairs. After carrying the heavy bags of leaves and dumping the leaves in a huge pile, we carried the bags back up the stairs and raked more leaves into them. We repeatedly did this until the park was clean.

Estonian Education Christmas Party Set Up BY: BHASKAR CHARKRABARTI

The Christmas party setup for the Estonian Education Society was a lot of fun. The building it was in, the Estonian House, was a very classy building and had nice ambiance. We went up to the second floor where the party setup was to be. First, we helped to unfold chairs and put them in place. We had to constantly count how many chairs there were. Someone counted and said we had put ten extra, so we took away the extra chairs. But then when we counted again, we had ten too little. So we had to put back the chairs. Then, we put chair covers on most of the chairs, since they did not have enough at the moment. After that, we helped put tablecloths on all of the tables and then put plates, utensils, and glasses in their correct position. Next, we brought some dishes of light food from downstairs. Finally, we got to try some very tasty Estonian food. It was similar to potato salad. Overall, everyone had a lot of fun talking and setting up a pretty classy party.

DECEMBER 2018

WHAT I ENJOYED MOST OF ALL WAS THE SETTING UP OF THE EVENT WHICH WAS VERY FUN WHEN EVERYONE WORKED TOGETHER. THERE WERE MANY LAUGHS AND I LOVED HELPING OUT AND HAVING FUN AT THE SAME TIME. IT WAS ALSO VERY EXCITING SEEING THE KIDS ENJOY THE EVENT AND HAVE FUN DOING EVERYTHING. AFTER THE EVENT I WAS VERY TIRED BUT IT MADE ME REALIZE THAT KIDS NEED LOTS OF OPPORTUNITIES TO HAVE FUN AND BE CHILDREN WHILE THEY STILL CAN BECAUSE THE WORLD IS HARD TO LIVE IN AND CHILDHOOD INNOCENCE SHOULD BE AS BEST AND AS LONG AS POSSIBLE. THE EVENT HAS MADE ME WANT TO HELP OUT MORE IN THESE TYPES OF EVENTS SO THAT MORE CHILDREN CAN BE HAPPY. I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO LOTS OF THINGS BUT MOSTLY EVENTS THAT INVOLVE CHILDREN BECAUSE I WANT TO SEE SMILES ON THEIR FACES WHEN THEY ENJOY THINGS THAT I HELP TO CREATE.

SCHOLARS II BEAUTIFICATION SERVICE PROJECT

89 HOURS SERVED January 19, 2019

ANTHONY LIM On the 19th was scholars II beautification, and we painted the walls at East Harlem Scholars Academy, a school at 106th street and between Park and Madison Ave. Throughout the event, we used paint rollers to apply a fresh coat of white paint to the walls and used brushes to get into hard to reach places. They even served a light breakfast and lunch, which was all really good. We also helped clean up the mess that was made due to all the paint after we were done painting. Although the event was filled will the unpleasant smell of paint, and that it was threatening to snow at any moment, it was all worth it for the bonding time I had with other Key Clubbers. Paint Project at East Harlem involved all hands on deck. Although the weather forecast predicted heavy snow later in the day, many Bronx Science Key Club members devoted their Saturday to repainting the classrooms. I made more friends today and got closer to my fellow Key Clubbers. While bending down to get some paint, I lost balance and used the wall for support-problem was the wall had just been painted. Although I was pretty clumsy, we all laughed at each other's mistakes and looked out for one another. The event meant even more with MLK Day around the corner. We painted with not only brushes but also our hearts"Everybody can be great ... because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love." -Martin Luther King Jr
