The Story of Art A Byard Art Exhibition

Once upon a time, there was an art gallery situated in the middle of Kings’ Parade in the historic centre of Cambridge.

Welcome to The Story of Art, a stunning exhibition exploring themes of narrative, fiction, non-fiction, self, place, and life. Stories are the way in which we understand and communicate with the world around us, and this exhibition celebrates the diverse ways in which art and stories intertwine.

Featuring artwork with a strong focus on storytelling, and artwork using printed media such as books, magazines and more, this exhibition truly is a feast for the eyes.

From abstract, conceptual designs by Frances Bloomfield to detailed, intricate sculptures by Emma Taylor. From thought-provoking, pensive ceramics by Carolyn Tripp to characterful, tounge-in-cheek sculptures by JJ Vincent.

Alison Pullen

Mixed Media Collage

£2,850

Cambridge Reception Room

Alison Pullen’s interiors are created using a mix of paint and collage. She always works in situ, both beginning and ending in the room itself in the creation of these atmospheric, mix-media works. Her career has taken her to exhibit across the UK and at major art fairs in New York, Stockholm and Brussels.

Emma Taylor

Water Music (Great Crested Grebes)

28cm x 14.5cm x 21.5cm

Mixed Media, Paper

£600

Emma repurposes secondhand books to create intricate sculptures which appear to emerge directly from the paper pages giving life to ideas, information or stories contained within the books. By playing with scale her fascination with detail can be fully realised as fine strips of text are transformed into rigging on a seafaring galleon, printed words become feathers, or singular letters form the bricks of grand buildings.

I is for Insects

72cm x 59cm (Framed)

Giclee Print

£245

Alison Stockmarr’s work has an ethos of storytelling and repurposing at its heart. All materials are recycled into scenarios that at first glance allude to the past, but with closer inspection often offer an ironic nod to the present. These assemblages of everyday archaeologies afford the viewer glimpses of invented stories and alternative narratives.

Dream Of You

20cm x 15cm Ceramic

Carolyn Tripp abstracts, through tearing and cutting, the stories told in collected imagery and text of lives past and present centring around the human condition from significant to trivial. New meanings are created through visible fragments which hint at the narrative.

Francis Bloomfield

Toile de Mystere, 34cm x 53cm x 9cm

Mixed Media

£900

Francis Bloomfield creates fascinating dreamscapes, exquisitely created in three-dimensional collage. Each piece plays with space and perspective to draw the viewer into the artist’s curious imagined worlds. Although her subject matter is drawn from the world we exist in, her work always contains a suggestion of parallel realities. However, the meanings are far from prescriptive and the viewer is invited in to contemplate and reflect upon these mysterious scenarios.

JJ Vincent

Proto-Graffiti

35cm x 22cm x 21cm

Mixed Media

£550

JJ Vincent is fascinated by clay- the fact that we can take what is essentially mud, and, using a little imagination, produce something that has the potential of invoking emotional response for decades, if not centuries. In the artist’s own words, “I will probably not be around then, but it is reassuring to think that my fingerprints will be.”

A Wisdom of Owls 40cm x 51cm Mixed Media

“My work is inspired by the Gothic paintings of Europe and their joyful celebration of an elevated reality. I aspire to their luminous palettes enhanced with the elegance of gold and copper leaf. My imagery is a celebration of the timeless joys of gardens, meadows, birdsong and afternoon tea. These paintings are all on carefully prepared gesso panels, painted in egg tempera; and over painted in oils”.

Diane Griffin

Embossed Scroll Vases (Small)

Porcelain
18cm x 9cm
£120

The paper-like scrolls in Diane’s work were inspired by a trip to Jerusalem many years ago. Here she visited the Wailing Wall and was intrigued by the thousands of wishes and prayers written on paper and crammed between the stones in the wall. She was inspired by the collective focus for so many peoples’ hopes and wishes at this ancient site and their interaction with it.
