Alison Stockmarr Alison Stockmarr's work has storytelling at its heart. All materials are recycled into scenarios that at first glance allude to the past, but with closer inspection often offer an ironic nod to the present. Apertures are cut into books and record covers and ephemera collaged in layers. These assemblages of everyday archaeologies afford the viewer glimpses of invented stories and alternative narratives. Alison is a materials-led artist and maker. Her work is made from original paper ephemera and each piece carries with it her signature playful embellishments. Over the last 9 years she has created a library of collaged works, exhibiting in group and solo shows in galleries throughout the UK and abroad.

Charlotte Cornish “I am fascinated by the qualities of paint, the unending possibilities of colour and colour relationships, and the potential this has to create connections and reactions.” Charlotte finds her inspiration from places she has travelled to, using photographs of past trips as initial starting points for her compositions. Her works end up a mixture of elements from the visual world, with her own emotional responses and experience. Charlotte explores both paint and print mediums, working primarily with acrylic, screen print and lithograph. She prefers quick drying acrylic as it allows her to build up multiple layers in parts of her work, contrasting with directly applied, thicker marks. She has been commissioned by a number of private and public institutions, producing work for John Lewis, Aviva Investors, Lloyd's T.S.B and Aldi Stores. Her work is regularly exhibited at major art fairs and galleries across the UK.

Fletcher Prentice Fletcher's work is a celebration of the natural world, but also a celebration of paint itself. The textures, colours and freedom of paint fascinates the artist, and through his work he explores this medium in the same way as he does his chosen subject. “My work is a constant striving to balance on the one hand my fascination with the object–using paint and enjoying the qualities of paint, breaking down and semi-abstracting the subject matter and surface–and on the other hand my desire to retain and capture the natural beauty of the subject, whether the human figure, an animal or a single bird.” Although the exuberant characters and colours of exotic bird life are an inspiration to him, he has recently become drawn to wildlife closer to home; the more domestic beauty of the birds and plants in his own rural garden.

Frances Bloomfield Frances makes fascinating dreamscapes, exquisitely created in three-dimensional collage. Each stage set-like piece plays with space and perspective to draw the viewer into the artist's curious imagined worlds. Although her subject matter is drawn from reality, her work always contains a suggestion of parallel realities. It might be a juxtaposition of what is considered real and what is imagined or desired, or the conflict between the facade and what could really be occurring behind it. However, the meanings are far from prescriptive and it is for the viewer to contemplate and reflect upon these mysterious scenarios. Inspiration for the work comes from an eclectic range of sources; industrial ruins, the back streets of European cities, geometry and wiring diagrams, maps and plans, detritus from the seashore, unusual found objects and various texts, most notably writing from R.D. Laing, Gaston Bachelard and Italo Calvino.

Francis Campbell Following a degree in Fine Art at Falmouth School of Art in the late 1980s Frances Campbell returned to her home city of Cambridge, finding inspiration in the local area. Her recent seascapes and landscapes explore the balance between realism and abstraction. They are inspired by the movement of water and light, minuscule details that are easily overlooked. Frances begins each work with lots of quick sketches, aiming to capture the essence of a place and to narrow down the parts that really interest her. Back in the studio these are developed into paintings with acrylics, collage and a mix of printmaking and drawing techniques. Colours are built up, blended and then often scraped away, often over weeks or months to create rich textures and colours.

Helen Ward Helen Ward is a Bristol based artist and designer. Having graduated from UWE Bristol in 2001 with a graphic design degree, she started working as a paper engineer, making pop-up books while training as a traditional bookbinder. Nowadays, Helen works from home on her dining room table, armed with a scalpel and a very large stack of paper. The original idea for her paper entomology artwork came from acquiring a collection of Victorian hand marbled paper during her time working at the bindery. “The papers were all just so beautiful, I had to have them and I hoarded them in a box for years before I knew what I was going to do with them all!" Some of the patterns in the papers reminded her of butterfly wings, and so the idea progressed. Helen has since exhibited her work at a number of venues across the UK, as well as taking part in shows all over the world. She says she will never get bored of cutting the intricate pieces as the paper is all so beautiful. “I am just so happy to give it a new lease of life, rather than it all rotting away never to be seen again. I feel so fortunate to have such wonderful examples of traditional craftsmanship and it's brilliant to be able to share them in this way.”

Maureen Mace Maureen Mace lives in Cambridge where she spends her time painting and teaching art to small groups in her studio. Cambridge is a huge influence in her work. She loves the beautiful, historic city with its wide, open spaces, great architectural buildings, old university traditions and, of course, its cows. Maureen adds into her works the rich night skies, shining moons, and her taste for Medieval Art to form the basis for these intricate, dream-like paintings. Maureen studied visual communication and worked for several years as a graphic artist and illustrator before qualifying rather late in life as an art teacher. Her early professional background still influences her work and she gets carried away with intricate detail, using brushes that are far too small to delve into her whimsical, almost magical-realist world. Recently Maureen became a reader at the Parker Library at Corpus Christi where she draws from the illuminated manuscripts. She is hoping to publish some kind of illustrated book based on her research in the future. She is a member of Cambridge Open Studios and Cambridge Drawing Society and exhibits with them regularly.

Patrizio Belcampo “Colour, quality, movement of a line, and the overall composition and visual impact of an image, are what my prints are about.” Born in Northern Italy 1979, Patrizio Belcampo moved to Edinburgh in 2003. He became a member of Edinburgh Printmakers in 2005, and in 2011 he graduated in Drawing and Painting at Edinburgh College of Art. His work explores the natural world, literature, material history and the decorative arts. Essentially, the artist is pre-occupied by all he finds beautiful, be that natural or manmade. Patrizio has exhibited in Scotland with the Royal Scottish Academy, the Society of Scottish Artists, Edinburgh Printmakers and the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts. He has also showcased work at major Art Fairs and the London Original Print Fair.

Rosemary Trestini Rosemary Trestini studied at St Martin's College of Art in London, going on to do an MA at the Royal College of Art. While there, she came under the influence of Professor Carel Weight and Roger de Gray, and her work moved from abstraction to the figurative. She realised she wanted to paint nature, both flora and fauna, and moved out of London to the West Country, to surround herself with the subject matter that newly inspired her. She has painted this hugely popular British bird collection especially for Byard Art's Christmas exhibition. Rosemary's work has been exhibited widely at galleries in Bath, the Scilly Isles, London, Cambridge, Surrey and Cornwall.

Sarah Rooms Heaphy Sarah loves the challenge of hand-building ceramics with porcelain clay. She spends time collecting shells, ammonites, rocks, leaves and all sorts of textures to create relief textures on her pieces. The white porcelain surfaces are printed with layers of coloured slip, delicate sea textures and pencil marks to create the atmosphere of the coast. Sarah works in her home studio, in Cambridge, surrounded by her photographs, paintings and sketches of the coast for constant inspiration. We have more of Sarah's work on our website, including a lovely collection of ceramic vessels!

Simon Tozer “I find that making pictures is rarely straightforward; it is a process of trying to reach for thoughts and feelings that are usually submerged beneath the day to day.” Simon studied a Masters in Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art. Using humour within his work, he tries to illustrate human desire, our fears and frailties, often through the representation of animals, but also through machines, cars and ships. These witty bird portraits have been painted especially for Christmas 2020.
