2013 NSW Business Leader NSW Business Chamber 2013 Central West Business Leader Central West Business Awards

Sharon Winsor - Indigiearth Founder Gawaimbanna-Gu Wiradjuri Nhurranbaang (Welcome to Wiradjuri Country) Sharon Winsor, an Ngemba Weilwan woman, grew up on land in western NSW with her Aboriginal mother and white Australian father. Collecting bush foods and gathering bush fruits in the wild was a necessity for her family during her childhood. Many years later, Mudgee was a frequent half-way stop on her many journeys from Sydney to Gilgandra and Gulargambone and she fell in love with the Mudgee Region, which she now calls home. Sharon’s spirituality is deeply connected to mother earth, so living in such a town of beauty and modern charm whilst being surrounded by the rolling hills, rivers and streams that is the Mudgee Region, enables her to nurture that connection. With its proximity to Sydney and access to the wider region, Mudgee seemed like the right choice for Sharon’s expanding business Indigiearth which produces quality Native food and skin care products.

Mid-Western Regional Council Our region includes the eclectic towns of Gulgong, Kandos, Mudgee and Rylstone and many rural villages. Before white settlement this was Wiradjuri Country. Tourism is a vital part of our local economy. Mid-Western Regional Council works closely with the local tourism industry to make sure you’ll have a fabulous experience when visiting, and ensure our offering keeps growing. Our population of almost 24,000 is made up of many ‘tree changers’ who have traded city life for the joys of country living. Our culture is diverse and active, with a strong metropolitan flavour. The Glen Willow Regional Sporting Complex in Mudgee has hosted national and international events, and has the town billed as a major destination for sporting spectaculars. Gulgong is the site of gold discovery, Rylstone is the perfect base for a scenic drive or bushwalk and Kandos is the gateway to the wonderland of Wollemi National Park. The arts and culture of the region’s towns are now a key draw card like our local wine and home grown produce. There are endless exhibitions and opportunities for participation, and our display of outdoor public art continues to grow. Council hosts dozens of major events each year. Crowds gather for national sporting clashes and streets are closed for wine and food festivals. We’re always working on something to give you another reason to come back. People are choosing the Mudgee region more and more to live, work, invest and visit. Come and see why for yourself!

Des Kennedy Mayor, Mid-Western Regional Council I’d like to personally invite you to explore our magnificent region; discover its rich history, natural beauty and famous hospitality. Tourism is a vital part of our economic and social success. That’s why Mid-Western Regional Council and our local tourism industry work hand-in-hand to make sure visitors have a fabulous time.

Keep up to date with what we’re doing on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Mudgee The Wiradjuri people were the original occupants of the Mudgee district, however contact with the Europeans was disastrous for them, and by the end of the 1800s they had virtually disappeared from the greater Mudgee district although there are numerous traces of their extensive occupation of the land. The name Mudgee is derived from the Wiradjuri term Moothi meaning “Nest in the Hills”. The first white man to reach the current township of Mudgee was William Lawson in 1821, and in 1822 George and Henry Cox were the first white settlers on the Cudgegong River when they established the Menah run, 3 km north of the current town. The town of Mudgee was gazetted in January 1838 and it quickly developed as a result of the 1850’s gold rush when it became the hub for provisions and business. Early Australian architectural facades and historic buildings still line the wide streets of Mudgee, many dating to the 1850s. Today boutique shopping, cafes and restaurants, markets and a vibrant arts community give the town an edge and ambiance which the locals revere and visitors covet. Indulge your senses in the region - enjoy wine, honey, visit museums, go bushwalking or birdwatching, cycle, go gold panning, visit markets, galleries, antique shops, a miniature railway, a boutique brewery or star gaze at the observatory. Whatever you choose our attractions are ‘in every sense perfection’.

From 4pm on Saturday 27 September the Mudgee CBD will come alive with flavours of the Mudgee Region as part of the 2014 Mudgee Wine and Food Festival. Enjoy dinner in the street and taste local wine, food and produce in a festival atmosphere with the famous clock tower as the backdrop. A great way to meet the locals and see why we love living here. Entry is free!

• Visit cellar doors – the region has almost 40 cellar doors as well as a brewery and distillery. • Try local produce – Farmers’ Markets, farm gate tours, and tastings of olive oil, cheese, and other locally grown product. • Visit an art gallery and check out the amazing talent of our local artists. • Take a walk – with stunning heritage buildings, a wonderful museum and fantastic boutique shopping all within a few blocks, there’s plenty to do without leaving our main streets (see Mudgee walk page 75). • Enjoy a coffee or a leisurely lunch at one of our fabulous cafes or restaurants and soak up the ambience of our beautiful town.

Gulgong

Gulgong Don’t miss this exceptional town when visiting our region. Walking through Gulgong’s narrow, bent streets with its high footpaths, horse troughs and horse hitching rails will transport you back to the gold rush days when an estimated 20,000 people flocked to the area. The streets around Gulgong CBD have changed little since Tom Saunders first struck gold at Red Hill in 1870 and the old mine shaft and Poppet Head are still on Red Hill for visitors to see. The heritage listed town buildings, many complete with original verandahs and iron-lace balconies, include such gems as The Prince of Wales Opera House, in which Dame Nellie Melba once performed. It is the oldest performing arts venue still being used for its original intention in Australia. Henry Lawson, although born in Grenfel went to school in Eurunderee, in between Gulgong and Mudgee. The old Eurunderee School still stands and is being preserved by a group of volunteers for visitors to enjoy. The town embraces Henry Lawson with the Henry Lawson Festival held every June long weekend and in the Henry Lawson Centre museum. The Gulgong district is also world-famous for its clays, and both the town and its surroundings are a haven for potters, artists, tapestry workers, artisans and craftspeople. Clay festivals are held in Gulgong every three years attracting ceramicists from all over the world. The next festival is due in 2016.

• Gulgong Pioneers Museum – Astonishing collection of Australiana including recreated rooms and shops, machinery and a sight and sound museum. Allow plenty of time for this experience. • Holtermann collection – These famous photographs were taken and collated by Charles Bayliss and Beaufoy Merlin in the height of the gold rush in 1872. Located in the Pioneers Museum. • Henry Lawson Centre – The largest collection of Henry Lawson memorabilia outside of the Mitchell Library in Sydney • Red Hill Outdoor Museum – Featuring a slab hut school room and a relief map of the mining leads around the town • Gulgong Markets – An eclectic mix of food, music and handcrafted goodies - every 4th Saturday of the Month

Gulgong

Rowena Ellis

“Gulgong is such a beautiful location, and just 4 hours from Sydney. It makes for a great drive through the Blue Mountains. There are local markets, wine tasting, beautiful restaurants, entertainment and friendly locals, not to mention what might just be the narrowest main street in the country. Be prepared to be courteous when you’re driving down Gulgong’s main street. You will more than likely have to pull over and wave a local through, single file! “Without a doubt the thing I love most about living and working in Gulgong would be the great people, visitors and locals alike” says Rowena. “I love to travel, but when I do it just seems to make me appreciate Gulgong more - I really love coming home”.

To hear her speak is to know she thrives on her career choice. Rowena Ellis has the hotel business in her blood. Her father bought The Prince of Wales Hotel over thirty years ago, a boutique operation, so it’s no surprise Rowena decided to carry on the family tradition.

“The thing I enjoy most working in tourism & hospitality is your days are never the same. You need a whole range of skills to work in this industry, but I wouldn’t have it any other way”.

Brett Nutting – AdHoc Furniture Why does a craftsman of Brett Nuttings’s calibre call Kandos home? You could liken it to a chef and his veggie garden. Brett has all the tools and inspiration that he needs to create his unique hand-crafted masterpieces right here in his own backyard.

From a township that was home to the largest cement works in the southern hemisphere, Kandos is now home to an eclectic array of unique businesses, making it a place like no other.

Space and clean air, character rich buildings and a plentiful supply of recyclable timbers, and all nestled at the foot of the mountains. Brett is the tradesman behind AdHoc Furniture in Kandos, which he opened 6 years ago. We asked Brett why anyone would want to visit Kandos? ‘To visit my showroom of course! Oh and you could play a round of golf, throw yourself into the local pool which has an amazing view and a shady grassy bank to lie on - or visit the Harley Davidson

motorbike museum on your way out to climb the pagodas at Dunns Swamp (which is not a swamp by the way). ‘ And Brett’s favourite thing to do? ‘Actually, I most love being in my workshop or gardening with my best friend Jennifer, but you might find me hanging out at Down the Track licensed cafe at the railway – big smiles when you walk in.

• Walk or cycle on the dedicated tracks between Rylstone and Kandos and Charbon.

The enterprising locals have come up with plenty of ways to attract visitors to their town. The disused railway station is now home to a licensed cafe called ‘Down the Track’ – where new meaning is given to ‘al fresco dining’ on the station platform – or you can experience the roaring open fire in what was once the station master’s room and baggage area, complete with ex-railway seating and memorabilia. For a small town, Kandos puts on some pretty amazing events. From the tyre smokin’ Street Machine in January to the biannual Garden Fair in November, with a Bob Marley festival in between and, amazingly, a hugely popular biannual contemporary art event: Cementa – celebrating Kandos’ physical and cultural environs and unique character.

AdHoc Furniture Open: By Appointment

• Markets - If there’s a 5th weekend in the month, then you’re guaranteed a market in Kandos - you’ll find them on the ‘Railway Green’ at Down the Track Cafe. • Henbury Golf Course is 18 holes and has spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. The club is friendly and welcomes visitors, who can’t believe how accessible and affordable it is. • Visit a unique motorbike museum with some extremely rare bikes – if you don’t have a previous love of bikes, you will once you take this tour at Bikes & Buds.

The region’s historic villages

(left) Lue Station (above) Windeyer Anglican Church

40km from Mudgee, Hargraves is often referred to as the veteran of the region’s gold towns. The gold rush began there in 1851 with the discovery of the famous ‘Kerr’s Hundredweight’ – a nugget which contained 1272 ounces of gold. Since the surge of miners that followed this discovery, Hargraves is a quiet and peaceful village with a general store, post office and school.

Nestled in a beautiful valley 40km south west of Mudgee, Windeyer is steeped in history. Gold was discovered in 1851 and during that era it was common for fossickers to yield up to four ounces of gold per pan. The heritage listed 1911 Windeyer Hotel still operates, as does a caravan park where you can hire gold panning equipment. Some of the world’s best superfine wool comes from the district and in the early 1980s, one grazier’s bale was sold at auction to the highest price ever secured in Australia at the time.

18

Lue (chain of waterholes) believed to be pronounced in the Aboriginal language like Loowee was originally named Dungaree. The village of Lue can be described as the village that moved to fit the landscape. It was moved to allow for the installation of the rail line in 1884 when it was a busy little village on the route to the Hunter region. In its heyday, Lue boasted a bakery, hotel, blacksmith, two general stores, a product merchant and butcher. Today there’s a pub, the unique Lue Pottery and some self contained and farm stay accommodation options.

Wollar is the gateway to the Goulburn River National Park. According to records, a noted pastoralist called Fitzgerald was one of the first settlers in Wollar who employed many shepherds and stockmen to supervise his cattle and sheep. The village was officially declared in March 1885. Wollar once boasted a butter factory and a bakery, which allegedly was so good, the bread was carted back to Mudgee daily.

The very picturesque Bylong Valley was first explored by William Lawson in 1822 after the discovery of the Goulburn River which was named after Henry Goulburn, the Colonial Secretary. Today the Bylong valley is a lush and green area famous for racehorse and beef cattle studs. There is a general store, a school and a public hall. Visit www.bylongvalleyway.com.au

Hill End is 72kms from Mudgee. Visit the historic gold mining town, museum, gallery and visitor centre. If you have a full day, make your return journey to Mudgee via Sofala and Ilford.

Lake Burrendong is a must for keen anglers and water sport enthusiasts. Located 27 km from Mudgee it has 3.5 times the surface area in water than Sydney Harbour.

Cycling in the Region From easy rides around town, longer distance road rides, to single track and dirt road options for mountain biking, there is something for everyone looking to ride the region. Around town you can ride the cycle path that runs along the river from Lawson Park to Walkers Oval where it crosses the Cudgegong River before looping back around past the Glenn Willow sports complex to Lawson Park. The Rocky Waterhole loop is a favourite road ride for many of the locals. This 25km ride passes by the lucerne paddocks on the river flats, open farmland and past the base of Mt Frome, from where you have picturesque views of the Mudgee valley. The Tinja Lane, Strikes Lane, Mount Pleasant ride offers those with mountain bikes or hybrids the chance to ride some of the dirt back roads close to town. The full ride is about 30km, but there are a number of short cut options along the way should you not want to ride the full distance. This ride will pass wineries, vineyards and working farms, giving you the chance to experience all aspects of the region. Please note these are not designated cycling tracks and you ride at your own risk.

The wonders of our National Parks

Dunns Swamp from the air

At more than 500,000 hectares, Wollemi National Park contains the largest wilderness area in NSW and safeguards a rich variety of wildlife and spectacular scenery. Part of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area, it’s a mecca for sightseeing, bush walking, camping and wilderness adventure.

Just 25kms east of Rylstone and Kandos is Dunns Swamp, a popular camping and picnic area. Set on the banks of the Cudgegong river and nestled amongst stunning sandstone pagoda rock formations, Dunns Swamp enjoys an outstanding biodiversity of plant and animal communities, with at least 107 birds species spotted in the area. A network of walking tracks surrounds the waterway, including one suitable for wheelchairs and strollers. Opportunities for both canoeing and swimming also make this a ‘must visit’ destination. Camping fees apply.

Norfolk Fall s, Coolah To ps

For a more secluded location to camp or enjoy a picnic in the Wollemi National Park, Coorongooba offers an ideal alternative. A short drive east of Glen Davis, a town once the centre of the oil shale industry, this is a dramatic location to enjoy the park’s natural beauty. The camping area sprawls along the shallowflowing Capertee river and is surrounded by spectacular, soaring sandstone cliffs, which glow gold and crimson in the evening light, creating a magical ambiance. Facilities include picnic tables, wood-fired barbeque rings and a pit toilet.

Other nature areas

Located off Putta Bucca road just north of Mudgee, this waterbird paradise exhibits a wide range of flora and fauna and is easily accessed with a parking area and includes an easy two kilometre walk and two newly built birdhides. This is a recreational area for birdwatching, bicycle riding, fishing and walking.

This unusual granite rock formation resembles a crouching frog and can be seen on the left hand side of the Ulan Cassilis road, 19km north of Mudgee, 1.5km past Hadabob Road

‘The drip’ is a towering sandstone cliff-face adorned with weeping grasses and ferns and dripping clear spring water into the river below. “The Drip” picnic area is situated 50 km (30 minutes) north of Mudgee on the Cassilis Rd (37km from Gulgong) and 10km past the village of Ulan. Turn right straight after the white cement bridge. Description of walking track: Walkers need to wear shoes and be of average fitness. The track length is approx 1.5km (20 minutes) each way.

The Drip – A sharp turn on the left brings you to the beginning of the Drip. The river flows over a rock platform at the base of an overhanging cliff face, dripping clear spring water.

These stencils of hands were made by the Wiradjuri people who occupied most of the central west of what is now New South Wales, and were one of the largest of Aboriginal language groups. This heritage site is about 12km east of Ulan and 2km on the left hand side past the entrance to ‘The Drip’ (see above). To get there, turn left off the Ulan-Cassilis Road at the Bobadeen Road sign, turn sharp left again, and drive 500 metres to the car park. The ‘Hands on Rock’ site is 600m from the car park. The path has a few roots across it, but is otherwise easy for about 400 metres; then it slopes up steadily to the rock cliffs. There are steps along the way, but some loose stones towards the end of the path require a little care, particularly on the way down. One of the features of the walk is the relatively unspoilt forest that surrounds the area. It is typical of the vegetation that once covered this part of the ranges. Please treat this area with care and respect. A viewing platform has been built, and visitors are asked not to leave it or the walking path.

The track begins at the Northern side of the parking area, near the 2nd BBQ and follows a cliff face adjacent to the Goulburn River. Proceed past the 3rd BBQ and over a foot bridge. 300m – Follow the rock face and cross over a tumble of rocks. Further down the track you come to a watercourse (Curra Creek) 600m – Cross over the creek and follow the path through ferns eventually crossing a dry watercourse 850m – The track passes between a large rock on your right and a cliff face on your left. Look for the rock orchids and a small spreading fern with round succulent leaves. The track veers close to the river eventually dropping down onto the sand, passing through a hollowed arch rock. 100 m after the arch on the opposite bank a rock overhang contains a Brett Whitley mural done in 1970 by the famous artist. 1km - A sign indicates a sharp left turn back to the cliff face. Follow the track at the base of the cliff line until it ends. Cross over a grassy bank.

22

This reserve protects an area of unique rainforest and western plant communities. The track to Ferntree Gully turns off from Bylong Valley Way 17km from Rylstone. It is a further 3 km on an unsealed track to the picnic area and start of walk. There are a number of walking tracks at Ferntree Gully that take you down into the cool narrow ferntree-studded valley floor, and/or around the top edge of the rocks where you can get an overview of the valley and the unusual rock formations on either side. Allow a minimum of one hour to do the loop walk and longer if you linger to enjoy the rock formations, ferns and orchids along the way. Take food and water. The walk through the gully, returning via the top track system, requires a reasonable degree of fitness. There is some scrambling over rocks and some quite steep ascents and descents on the steps leading into and out of the gully. A damp section of the gully containing many tree ferns is accessible via a short boardwalk which allows comfortable access while protecting this sensitive part of the Reserve.

Fossicking

Hill End is the site of the discovery in 1872 of the famous Holterman Nugget – the largest single mass of gold ever discovered, weighing in at 285kg. Almost all the Mudgee/ Gulgong/Hargraves area yielded gold. Large amounts of alluvial gold were recovered in the last century and some small reefs were mined. The Cudgegong River is renowned as an area where occasional small gems have been found, including diamonds, sapphires and rubies.

Located 39km from Mudgee, Hargraves’ part in goldrush history is recalled by the old stamper that stands in the village’s park. An area for gold panning is next to the bridge over Louisa Creek, The General Store offers gold pans and other equipment. (02) 6373 8540.

26

Situated 37km from Mudgee, today the area remains popular for gold fossicking. There is a fossicking area adjacent to the hotel, on Long Creek and adjacent to the Meroo Creek Bridge on the Mudgee approach to the village. Gold pans and other equipment may be hired from the Bushlands Tourist Park (Ph 02 6373 8252).

Now a ghost town, Tambaroora 3 km from Hill End was once a thriving centre rivalling Hill End in size. The fossicking area is located 67km from Mudgee on the right hand side of the Hill End Road, at the point where Tambaroora Creek crosses the road.

Gulgong town is built around and over many of the original goldfields. There is an outdoor Mining Museum at Red Hill (the location of the original gold discovery) which includes a stamper.

The National Parks and Wildlife manages the Hill End site, providing a museum and Visitors Centre (Ph 02 6337 8206). It is illegal to pan for gold within the town of Hill End, but the fossicking area set aside just north of the town at Tambaroora is suitable. The Bald Hill mine has also been restored by NPWS and underground tours are held on a regular basis – contact the Great Western Store for details Ph (02) 6337 8357.

Gold fossicking equipment (except metal detectors) is also available at the Sofala Souvenir Shop which is open 7 days. Gold pans can be hired for $2 per day (plus a refundable deposit of $8). For further information please phone (02) 6337 7075. (Prices may be subject to change without prior notice.)

Local Produce

The Mudgee Region is a proud supporter of the 100 Mile Diet. Along with quality olive oils, the region is now renowned for tapenades, honey, hazelnuts and pistachios, jams, wine jellies, pestos and salad dressings and a range of marinades. Goat, sheep and cow’s milk cheeses can be tasted at a factory or a farm gate. Lamb, beef, free range pork, and yabbies are being bred and used on menus at a range of cafes and restaurants. Take a farm walk, go to the monthly farmers market or dine at a local eatery. You won’t be disappointed, as there are cafes and restaurants to cater for all palates and all purses.

Luke Spencer – Agronomist Chocolatier – Spencer Cocoa Chocolate There are only a handful of bean-tobar chocolate makers in Australia, and Mudgee is lucky enough to be home to one of them. Luke Spencer’s passion for chocolate began in 2010 when he travelled to Vanuatu to rejuvenate a remote cocoa plantation. He fell in love with the place, the people and the amazing cocoa trees. Luke has been able to combine the things he loves most, his family, his passion for chocolate and of course living in the Mudgee Region. He loves the four distinct seasons, all of which bring their own particular beauty to the region – and the genuine country towns and villages, each with something unique to offer (great food & wine for starters!) Most mornings you’ll find Luke hanging out at Alby & Esther’s café, but after a hit of tennis with mates at the local club, it’s off to Roth’s Wine Bar for a cleansing ale. If it’s a day out with the family, then Luke loves nothing more than to head down to Rylstone for a relaxing lunch at 29nine99 yum cha. And his favourite wine variety? Well it’s one of the less traditional Mudgee varieties Tampranillo, a classic Spanish variety and the backbone of the great wines of Rioja. The microclimate in Mudgee is well suited to this variety and similar in many ways to the dry low mountainous regions in parts of Spain.

Nathan Williams & Helen Baker – Baker Williams Distillery It was only a few years ago that Nathan and Helen Williams started their six day a week love affair with Baker Williams Distillery, their Micro Distillery in Mudgee. Nathan and Helen spent some time in the US and had setup in Sydney but neither were ‘Sydney’ people. Helen had grown up in Mudgee and they would regularly spend weekends and holidays making the trek from Sydney. Too often the conversation in the car on the return trip to Sydney would turn to ‘why are we leaving?’ She: (Butterscotch queen – war & finance minister) - ‘Mudgee has all the benefits of a small country town – a beautiful history-laden region with a cosmopolitan lifestyle and an abundance of locally made & grown food. Add to that such a diverse range of wine and of course now spirits’. And her favourite drop? A glass or two of bubbles or one of Mudgee’s superb stickies. He: (Distiller, counter jockey, floor & bottle washer) ‘The Mudgee Region boasts such a beautiful township and some of the best cellar door experiences in Australia’ says Nathan. ‘And the Farmers Markets – locals and tourists alike often comment that they can’t believe all the stunning local produce – fruit & veg, meats, charcuterie, breads, oils, wines and more on offer’.

Restaurants & Cafés

Restaurants & Cafés The footpaths are positively groaning with locals and visitors enjoying the sunshine at the busy cafes as Mudgee does breakfasts like few other places – and all day! Choose from Mod-Oz, Thai, Italian, Indian, Chinese, pub grub, home-style café cooking, Lebanese feasts, wood fired pizza, long, leisurely lunches made with fresh local produce, or sophisticated bar food – you’ll find it all in the Mudgee Region. The region is a major producer of olives and high quality olive oils and is also renowned for tapenades, honey, hazelnuts and pistachios, jams, wine jellies, pestos and salad dressings and a range of marinades. Goat, sheep and cow’s milk cheeses can be tasted at a factory or a farm gate. Lamb, beef, free range pork and yabbies are just some of the regional and seasonal delicacies on many of the local menus. To enjoy the local foods and to meet their makers, take a farm walk or visit the monthly farmers markets. You won’t be disappointed, as there are cafes and restaurants to cater for all palates and all purses.

Andy Crestani – owner/chef – Pipeclay Pumphouse Andy and his wife Lara originally moved to Mudgee to escape the rat-race of Sydney and to start a family. A lot has happened in two and a half years. Daughter Aubrey has arrived, Pipeclay Pumphouse is up and running and Andy’s style of cooking has been embraced equally by locals and visitors alike. We asked Andy what he thinks is the best thing about the Mudgee Region. ‘Along with having some of the best wines in Australia we have the best produce to offer visitors. You only have to visit the Farmers Markets to see the bountiful produce the region has to offer – that’s why we started Pipeclay Produce. We’re giving the locals and visitors the opportunity to taste free-range pork at its best in our charcuterie products’. And Andy’s favourite thing to do in Mudgee? ‘We do a lot of hours in the restaurant so after hitting the town for breakfast on Monday mornings, we usually head back home and spend time together. As a family though we love going down to Dunns Swamp for some fishing or a picnic lunch. It’s an easy one hour’s drive from Mudgee’.

Wineries

Choose Mudgee Wine Our winemakers in the Mudgee region seek to make each wine unique, and they achieve this through diversity of climate, soil and winemaking technique. This provides you with an unparalleled opportunity to sample great wines with personality and character while relaxing in a beautiful, peaceful retreat away from the fastpaced life of the city. In Mudgee, you will discover older wine styles fondly remembered from the past alongside exciting new wines relatively unknown here, yet household names in other parts of the world. You’ll meet people who love what they do and are passionate about their region.

You’ll find the unmistakeable stamp of concentration, character and European finesse demonstrated in our wines, carefully matched to complement local produce at one of our eateries. From September 12th through to October 6th 2014 is an excellent time for visiting the region to experience our wine and food festival, where you can enjoy the best life has to offer in our thriving town. Chat to the winemakers about the recent vintage and sample their latest releases, discover which Mudgee wines best match with our local artisan cheeses or attend one of the many exciting events held at picturesque locations throughout the local area.

Lisa Bray – Winemaker Burnbrae Wines ‘There are some really great wines emanating from the Mudgee region that are a true expression of the area. We are seeing the emergence of new varietals and new styles that show an appreciation of the terroir and the commitment of the winemaking involved’. ‘Winemaking brought me to Mudgee 10 years ago now and I fell in love with the natural beauty of the hills and surrounds. There is so much to experience here – the wineries, the farmers markets, boutique shopping and the cafes and restaurants. I love getting out and about and enjoying the outdoors and the diverse landscapes. It’s a great balance for me as I also enjoy sharing the great food and wine experiences with good friends’. ‘My favourite ‘off the beaten path’ is Castle Rocks walking track. It’s about a half an hour drive out on the road to Bylong and Wollar. At the top of the range is an 8 km walking track. This is an easy walk and when you reach the end you are rewarded with magnificent views from the huge sandstone pagodas called Castle Rock’.

The Shiraz was in great condition when we handpicked on the 7th March, 2013, resulting in a wine of great standard. The Shiraz bunches were gently crushed and fermented in small open vats, and maturation was in French and American Oak Hogsheads for 12 months. This wine displays good complexity, with forest fruits, and dark chocolate components.

Merlot 2013 Mudgee Australia

The vintage of 2013 provided us with a dry and warm growing season, so we were able to produce fruit of excellent quality. Hand harvesting took place on the 20th March, 2013. This wine displays fruit driven aromatics of dark chocolate and plum, with generous Shiraz 2013 and soft tannins leading to a long finish.

Grape growing in the Region Mudgee is known for its warm summer days and cool evenings. Our elevation allows for a slower ripening period which makes the area ideal for producing wines with great intensity of colour and flavour. Originally, grapes were planted here in the 1850’s in soils that are typically a red brown loam with a subsoil rich in clay. This allows for healthy root growth, good water infiltration and aeration.

Rachael Flynn - East End Cottages Rachael came to Mudgee 22 years ago as a newlywed, making her new home on a sheep and cattle property in the Piambong area of Mudgee. The artist behind the Red Tractor Designs label and proprietor of East End Cottages, Rachael just loves where she lives. Waking up in the morning, making a big pot of tea, and watching all of the beautiful Australian birds from the kitchen window is one of the simple pleasures in Rachael’s life. “I love the diversity of this town” says Rachael. “There are so many enthusiastic people who contribute to making this place so unique and interesting. There’s something for everyone here – great wine and beer, spectacular food, beautiful scenery, a continual stream of events and welcoming accommodation”.

Rylstone Historical Walk Enjoy a walk along the route laid out and view the beauty of the old buildings. Look for the heritage plaques on or adjoining most of the buildings. 1. The School of Arts & Memorial Hall Now known as the Small Hall, the School of Arts (c1910) was originally a library and centre for meetings. It later functioned as a supper room, for card tournaments, as a Red Cross Centre and Scout Hall. The 1926 Memorial Hall next door was once used as the town’s cinema theatre and is now used as a multifunction Community Hall. 2. Jackson’s Corner Built by John Wesley Jackson, these shops were originally constructed in stone. A disastrous fire in 1927 destroyed the buildings but new ones were erected on the foundations. The stone barn, by the Showground gate, and Jackson’s original house with slab walls tucked behind the shops on the north side, remain intact in their appearance. 3. The Globe Hotel & Sample Room In 1880 Mr Holland, an ex-saddler, and his father-inlaw Mr Thomas Owen, an ex-policeman, built a sandstone hotel of 12 rooms. It was soon extended to accommodate the increased business brought by the railway in 1884. The entrances and façade were altered in the 1930’s due to changes in the street level. The Sample Room next door was constructed to provide a space for commercial travellers to display their wares to local storekeepers. 4. St. Malachy’s Church This graceful 1875 Catholic church replaced a small timber slab church built in the 1850’s. The style is Victorian Gothic, with an Italianate belltower. An addition to the front was made in 1960 with stone from a private chapel on Monivae, a property near Rylstone. 5. Rylstone Garage Cars came to Rylstone in the 1920’s, and this building was Rylstone’s first garage. Removing the cars made a great space for dancing, and the Sample Room opposite was near enough

68

for a supper room. The garage was also the first venue for silent movies before the cinema operated at the Memorial Hall. 6. Flour Mill This building was originally a three storey flour mill built in 1872 by John Purvis. In 1893 the boiler blew up and rocketed through the wall and into the building next door, killing two people. This event, and a fire in 1922, resulted in major changes to the look of the building. It has operated as a milk bar and café since the 1960’s. 7. Purvis’ Store The building on the right side was built by Purvis as a shop and residence. Subsequent owner Edward Nash doubled the downstairs area, adding to the verandah and creating the illusion that the upper storey extends over the whole building. It has served as an ironmongery, haberdashery and grocery store. 8. The Bridge Hotel This fine building, built for publican Goodwin Spires Hall, opened in 1872. In 1895 it became a bank and manager’s residence and was used as such until 1957. It was acquired by the Historical Society in the 1960’s and now hosts a variety of boutique businesses and accommodation. The building is protected by a permanent conservation order and is on the NSW State Heritage Register. 9. James Nash House Built for James Nash, blacksmith, this home was originally located near the Showground. The building now houses the Cottage Museum and the family history archives of Rylstone and District Historical Society. It is open Sundays 10am-3pm or by appointment. 10. Hall’s Corner These two early cottages were erected by Goodwin Spires Hall to house his extended family. In later years they were converted to a number of businesses including a newsagency, bootmakers, garage, solicitor’s office and bank. 11. The Dry Goods Store This substantial building was erected for

John W Hardwick to house his dry goods and general store. It operated as such until the 1900’s. For a number of years it served the community as the local Masonic Hall. 12. Hedingly The home of John W Hardwick, commenced in 1859. It was later owned for many years by local general practitioner Dr. Howe. His daughter and her husband still reside here. They have undertaken restoration in keeping with the original design. 13. Highfield Cottage This is one of the very early slab cottages of Rylstone still standing, built by Robert T Highfield. 14. St James’ Church of England The church was consecrated in 1864 and features splendid stained glass windows. It was one of the earliest Anglican churches west of the Blue Mountains. At the rear is a small slab building that functioned as both church and Rylstone’s first schoolhouse in the 1850’s. 15. Wesleyan Church The Wesleyan Church, serving a growing Methodist congregation, was built in 1884. It now serves the Uniting Church congregation. The building replaced the smaller sandstock brick Zion Chapel (1852, now demolished) that stood next to St. Andrews Church. A Temperance Hall (1874) once stood in the present roadway. The Federation period church manse, on the opposite corner, is of brick construction.

Come for a walk around Kandos The town of Kandos began as a private village to service the cement company (which closed in 2011). It is one of only a few twentieth century towns in Australia. As you explore the town note these features: • Arches and Greek columns on public buildings. • A diversity of housing - in ash brick, fibro, cement render, hardiplank, timber and brick. • Original fencing in ash brick, concrete and wire. • Craftsmen’s symbols on the front of some houses. • Distinctive and curious house names, letter boxes and garden pieces; interesting gardens and plants. 1. Kandos Hotel 1916 cnr Angus Ave and White Cres (See map 9D) The Kandos Hotel is the oldest commercial building in Kandos. Tooth and Co paid a high price for the land in the belief that a caveat on all land titles would prevent the building of another hotel in the town.

8. Angus Memorial Hall 1917 Angus Ave (9H) Named after the Chairman of the cement company, this hall was the centrepiece of Kandos social life in the first two decades. Benefits, concerts, balls, church services, meetings and carnivals were all held here. For many years it also housed the cinema, public library and hairdresser. It is now a florist and Harley-Davidson museum.

2. Railway Station 1919 Davies Rd (10C) This hand-me-down railway station (transported from Locksley on the Central Tablelands) was, at one time, one of the busiest stations on the Mudgee line.

9. Kandos Community Centre 1956 Angus Ave (9F) Set back from the main street this imposing building can hold 700 to 800 people. It is constructed of cement-rendered ash brick with a corrugated fibro roof. Accommodated beneath it, in what was once the kitchen and supper room, is the Kandos Library.

3. Railway Hotel 1927 cnr Ilford Rd and Clifford St (10C) Because it was built on private land this second hotel was unaffected by the cement company’s caveat. Note the exposed brickwork, verandahs, ornate parapet, awnings, pillars and French doors. The Kandos Hotel had similar features until the 1950s.

10. Post Office 1926 cnr Angus Ave and Jaques St (9E) This red brick building, with its classical revival features, added a proud, solemn air to Angus Avenue when it was built. Note the Greek columns, unadorned roof-line, lintel (depicting the name Post Office Kandos), and formal steps.

4. Court House 1929 Ilford Rd (9C) Until this charming brick and tile building with its enclosed verandah and Greek columns was completed, the first court room in Kandos was located in McGrath’s premises (see 6. The Kandos Stores). The court closed in 1970 and it is now a police residence. The police station beside it was built in 1961.

11. The Clock 1958 cnr Jaques St and Angus Ave (9E) Sixteen immigrants, who were naturalized at the first citizenship ceremony to be held in Kandos, presented this obelisk and clock to the town. The name Kandos and ornate wrought iron were added in 2008.

5. The Rotunda 1930 White Cres (9D) This handsome temple-like structure with its domed roof, Greek columns, octagonal shape, wrought-iron balustrade and steps, awaits a Sunday afternoon brass band. 6. The Kandos Stores 1918 Angus Ave (9E) Built as a business and residence by J P McGrath, this is a spacious, two-storey, double-fronted building with cantilevered verandah. Over the years it has housed a bank, court house, café, draper, milliner, TAB, dress shop and professional rooms. 7. Church of England 1921 cnr Angus Ave and Jaques St (9F) Evolving over decades this simple, charming, gothic-style church has

70

walls of rough-hewn stone and a roof of corrugated iron. Note the bell and belfry between the church and rectory.

12. Kandos Bicentennial Industrial Museum 1919 22 Buchanan St (10E) This former Methodist Church was the first religious building in Kandos. The Superintendent of the cement company, Floyd S Richards, had it built in the Californian mission style of his home-town church in America. 13. The Scout Hall 1942 Dabee Rd (10J) A gift of the cement company, the scout hall has provided scouting skills for generations of children who have dashed through the turnstile, down the cement path and up the steps to the entrance, framed by the cement awning and pillars. 14. Catholic Church 1922 Dangar St (7J) This church was built to serve the dual purpose of church and school. Every week the altar was curtained off with green velvet curtains. The

W W W.V ISITM UDGE E RE GION .COM.AU DOW N LOA D THE M UDGE E RE GION SM A RT PHONE APP

moveable blackboards and desks (which converted to high-backed seats for Sunday Mass) were arranged to form classes. 15. The Good Samaritan Convent 1930 Fleming St (6J) An architectural gem in the Spanish Mission Style, this former convent, with its handsome arches, Greek columns and wide verandahs, was designed to catch the sun in winter and the shade in summer. 16. Uniting Church 1927 cnr Noyes and Dunn Sts (6I) Dedicated and opened as a Presbyterian Church, it became a Uniting Church in 1970. It is a plain somewhat austere concrete building with arched lancet windows, a pitched roof and buttresses.

17. Kandos School 1929 Fleming St (7E) Despite the Progress Association wanting a concrete building, the government chose this two-storey brick design with sash windows and a tiled roof. Now connected to other buildings you can identify it by the foundation stone. From Jaques Street, you can see the first weatherboard school, built in 1924. 18 Truswell’s Palais de Dance 1936 cnr Ilford Rd and Henbury Ave (6D) Now a vehicle workshop, this hall once had navy and gold drapes, padded seats, and modern appointments. It was the venue of choice for many district balls. Kandos Walk – reprinted with permission of Rylstone Kandos Business & Tourism

Gulgong Symbol Trail During the last Depression and in the Gold Rush days, people travelling country roads in search of work, food or just a place to sleep the night, used a secret code of symbols via stones, sticks or scratches on the ground, to communicate “the lie of the land” to fellow swaggies. Local identity and well known potter Chester Nealie was commissioned by our local Council to research the

symbols and make decorative paving tiles representing this secret language. Wander Gulgong’s historic streets and see how many you can find and what they refer to. Tiles appear in Coronation Park and Mayne Street (from White to Herbert Streets). Look around and see if you can find some of the humorous locations like the ones that say ‘dangerous drinking water’ (outside the pubs!)

1. Robertson Park: (Opposite the Visitor Centre) Market Square was the original name and in April 1846, the site of the first Mudgee Show. Take time to reflect at the 1914-1918 War Memorial. Band Rotunda - built in 1903 to honour Sir John Robertson, Premier, and Member for Mudgee. Those who served in the African Conflict (The Boer War 1899 – 1902) are also honoured here. Restored by the Shire Council it holds National Trust classification. 2. Post Office: Corner of Market and Perry Streets Named as The Post and Telegraph Office, the original building was erected in the 1860s. Over time there have been several additions, completed in ways making the original and the additions difficult to identify. The first Post Office, though not on this site, was built in 1840.

3. Dear, Loneragan and Hogan, Solicitors: 70 Market Street (next to Big W) This double storied building was originally a CBC Bank (Commercial Banking Company of Sydney), later to become part of NAB (National Australia Banking Company). The CBC opened in Mudgee in 1864 and closed in 1974. This building was erected in 1884 and holds National Trust classification.

a few, are held. The lamp posts nearby are designed to hold gas lamps.

4. The Town Hall building: Market Street (next door) Built in 1880 and also holding National Trust classifications, extensive renovations were carried out over 2012 – 2013. It now houses the re-furbished library and a magnificent theatre where movies are shown on a monthly basis, concerts of world renowned quality, book launches and the like to name

6. The Anglican Parish Church of Saint John the Baptist: Corner Market and Church Streets This magnificent church was completed in 1861 and replaced the 1841 building. The church contains excellent examples of stained glass and the church itself is classified by the National Trust. The church is open daily for private prayer and reflection.

5. Hannaford Cox Connellan & Mcfarland Solicitors: 62 Market Street This was built in the late 1920s and occupied by the State Bank of New South Wales, at the time called the Rural Bank of New South Wales from about 1935. This building holds classification by the National Trust.

7. The Clock Tower: Intersection Church and Market Streets The clock tower was donated by Mr Ivan Adams as a War Memorial. Turn left into Church Street. 8. The Regent Picture Theatre: Church Street The Regent Theatre opened on Wednesday 21st August 1935 Designed by Douglas Smith, the theatre was originally designed to accommodate live presentations. It hosted the world premiere of The Nugget which was filmed in and around Mudgee and starred Australian celebrities Eric Bana, Stephen Curry, Belinda Emmett among others. The theatre accommodated 986 people, and is a rare example of an Art Deco Theatre. 9. Saint Mary of the Presentation Roman Catholic Church: Corner of Church and Market Street The Presbytery was built in 1851 and along with the Church are both classified by the National Trust. The original church was demolished and replaced with a sandstone building in 1860. This, except for the sanctuary and vestry, was in turn demolished and replaced with the present body of the church in 1873 to 1876. In 1911 the steeple was added. It is believed the spire is the third highest in New South Wales. The church has a beautiful mix of Gothic and Byzantine architecture. The acclaimed artist George de Pyro painted “The Stations of the Cross”, noted for their colour and realism and are regarded amongst the best in the country. Visitors are always welcome.

10. Loneragan’s Store: Church Street (just past pedestrian crossing) This retail outlet, similar to Kellett’s, was originally a department store. The store first opened in 1870 (next to The Lawson Park Hotel) and moved in 1873 to the present location. The complex is now subdivided into several stores. With the arrival of major national chains, Loneragan’s finally closed their doors in 1984. 11. The Mudgee: Corner Church and Mortimer Streets Formerly the Waratah Hotel and before that at one time Lamont’s General Store which was one of the earliest stores in Mudgee. Apparently Lamont’s boasted a fully tailored men’s suit in six hours. Turn left into Mortimer Street. 12. The Oriental Hotel: Corner Mortimer and Lewis Streets Built in 1876, it is one of the few hotels in Mudgee which has traded under the same name since opening. Head back down Mortimer St. 13. The Uniting Church: 89 Mortimer Street (opposite Woolworths) Formerly the Methodist Church, built in 1863 – 1864 and holding National Trust classification. A Wesleyan Chapel was built here in about 1853 and is now part of the shops on the corner of Church and Mortimer Streets. Turn left into Perry Street.

14. Perry Street Hotel: Corner Perry and Gladstone Streets Formerly the Mechanics Institute and erected in 1865, The Perry Street Hotel was previously branded De Russie Suites. Mechanic’s Institutes originated in England and were centres for technical education, that is the trades. They housed libraries and were often the centre of a town’s social life. In fact it is recorded that Henry Lawson used the library here regularly. It also appears to have housed The Mudgee School of Arts at some stage and was used as the Mudgee Municipal Library during the 1950s. Now regarded as one of the country’s top boutique hotels (Gourmet Traveller magazine 2014). Head back towards Market Street. 15. The Mudgee Guardian Newspaper building: 9 Perry Street First published in 1890 it has continued, though under several owners (currently the Fairfax Group) to deliver good news and bad to Mudgee Region. 16. The Cobb And Co Boutique Hotel: Corner Perry and Market Streets The Cobb & Co Court is one of the oldest known original hotel buildings still standing in Mudgee. Built in the late 1850s, it was well known as an overnight stop for the Cobb & Co Royal Mail Coaches. It was a substantial brick building, with the restaurant section being used to house the Cobb & Co coaches and store fodder for the horses. For 2 shillings a traveller could obtain bed and breakfast, and it cost 8 shillings to stable 2 horses.
