The Brave New World of Digital Transformation

Transforming decision-making, design, construction, maintenance, businesses operations, resourcing and R&D

Virtual and Augmented Reality

At Ayesa, we enhance user experiences through 3D technology and create innovative tools to improve quality and add value to engineering designs and lifecycle analysis. Throughout our 56-year history, we have developed and implemented apps based on cutting-edge technology, such as virtual and augmented reality. We combine multidisciplinary and cross-functional teams from engineering and technology to create fresh insight and innovation.

Virtual Reality (VR) uses computer modelling and simulation to enable a person to interact with an artificial three-dimensional (3-D) visual or other sensory environment. In addition to its application for specialist professional training, VR is also used in architecture, civil engineering and industry. Combining BIM and digital twin technology, Ayesa analyses and validates prototypes for construction, design and manufacturing processes.

Augmented Reality - View the real world in a new light

AR involves overlaying digitally generated content over the real-world environment to provide users with relevant information and allow them to interact with this version of the physical world to gain intelligent insights that can be used in real-world applications. Even though this technology is still in its infancy, it is becoming more and more accessible due to mobile phones and tablets. For example, by using geolocation features, AR can assist users in finding their way around sites and infrastructure and assists in manufacturing and maintenance.

Main technologies: Maya, Blender and Substance, Unreal Engine, Unity and AR Code.

KEY PROJECTS

• 3D simulator training for electrical work in Brazil

• VR training for field staff

• VR for digging trial pits

AIR TRANSPORT: A Promising Future Ahead

Air travel and the aviation-centred economy have begun to soar back to pre-pandemic levels. The past few years have provided various challenges for the aerospace industry across multiple fronts. As a result, the aviation industry is undergoing a sea of transformative change: from how products are manufactured and designed to processes and operations. Transformation is also happening in the area of airspace management which is transforming air transport as we know it.

Safety and the environment are just some of the challenges facing the aviation industry.

At Ayesa, we have a long track record of developing and implementing technology to drive the move toward a more environmentally friendly and energy-efficient approach to transport. Examples include:

• New technology for batteries

• Autonomous flight based on IoT and AI,

• Flight management through digital platforms,

• Deployment of communication networks.

It is also important to develop physical infrastructure to manage air traffic and safety and connect the infrastructure and interfaces between the various systems to ensure transformation success. As a result, new disruptive concepts for civil and military aircraft have evolved, including UAVs, VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) aircraft, electric vehicles with distributed propulsion systems, and NGWSs/FCASs.

BIGDATA: Taking data to the extreme

Using data intelligently opens up many opportunities:

- Optimising processes, - Pre-empting problems or bottlenecks with predictive techniques, - Running customised marketing campaigns and

- predicting behaviours to underpin new product development, amongst many others.

By 2025, it is estimated that there will be 18.25 billion devices used around the world. These estimates, combined with new ways of gathering data mean data flow will continue to increase: through IoT (Internet of things) sensors, mobile devices and external data sources.

When utilising this data, it is essential to combine structured and unstructured data (images, audio, text, logs, etc.) whilst managing real-time actions. New solutions that offer scalability and functionality are also essential.

Big data has taken centre stage by offering cutting-edge solutions for a wide range of different industries including energy efficiency, utilities, energy, education and smart cities.

At Ayesa, we implement big data technology in the banking sector to detect fraud and theft. In the public sector, our solutions can predict early school leavers and recommend customised training for job seekers. The power of big data helps entities see find new ways of optimising resources and making operations more efficient.

KEY PROJECTS:

• Exabeat platform: for analysis and billing based on electricity readings

• The HipatIA project: a predictive analytics ecosystem for big data infrastructure

DIGITAL TWINS: Simulating designs, operations and maintenance

Digital twins are an innovative way of tackling the three main challenges faced by industry: design, maintenance and operations. Despite being extremely complex in nature, the concept, which allows us to create a digital counterpart of equipment or infrastructure, offers major benefits.

However, developing an identical graphical model, which is easily achieved using 3D design platforms is not enough. Nor is it enough to include additional information on the characteristics of materials, specifications for maintenance, etc., In order to produce a true digital twin, we need mathematical functions or algorithms which reflect boundary and working conditions based on the laws of physics and chemistry that govern a component. At Ayesa, we are ‘infrastructure integrators’ and ‘experts’ in taking on the challenge of dutifully representing these conditions as part of a digital twin. Once created, a world of possibilities opens up for design, operations and maintenance, which would would have been unthinkable up until now.

Industrial security for the modern world

The concept of industrial security has dramatically changed over the past ten years. We have transitioned from a physical security approach to an entirely new concept: cybersecurity which is not just part of the digital space but also has moved into people, industry, businesses and institutions. Cybersecurity is often understood as the measures to protect us from viruses and other types of malware so that our digital assets, devices and documents are kept safe.

However, cybersecurity means a lot more now. Due to the increased connectivity between institutions, companies and industry: it is imperative to apply the appropriate protective measures to ensure our information and devices, our businesses and environment, as well as ourselves are kept out of harm’s way. Over recent years, the consequences of security lapses have been seen across various industrial sectors, with attacks occurring on the Maroochy Shire sewage control system in Australia in 2000, the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station in the USA in 2003, Stuxnet in 2010, and the petroleum company Saudi Aramco in 2012.

In addition to the economic and reputational damage there were also severe consequences for the environment and the people that live there.

Drones4CIP

The objective of this project is to develop an intelligent surveillance system that protects critical infrastructure. As part of the process, we combine multiple technologies to create an experimental prototype (solely for acceptance testing and demonstrations), which will be used by port facilities (specifically because they are strategically important to the country’s economy.

The solution includes a comprehensive system for autonomous drone fleets and stations to enable them to land, take off, safely store and recharge their batteries. This technology will make protecting inaccessible or difficult-to-reach infrastructures possible, thus making large-scale surveillance a reality.

SuperPV

Development of superior quality PV systems, based on a hybrid combination of technological innovations and business operation solutions, which aims to accelerate large-scale deployment in Europe and help EU photovoltaic businesses to regain leadership on the world market. This will also aid the management and monitoring of all the assets in the photovoltaic plant to optimize their operation and maintenance, and enable faster decision-making. To achieve ground breaking impact on cost reduction, the project concept tackles three cornerstone steps impacting the PV system performance and, thus, LCOE:
