REFRACTIVE CATARACT SURGERY WYCHE T.
COLEMAN, III, MD
A common question I hear often is, “What is refractive cataract surgery and how is it different from regular cata- ract surgery?” The answer is refractive cataract surgery has a dual purpose –not only to remove the cloudy cataract that is blocking the clear passage of light to the back of the eye, but also to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses afterward.
Refractive cataract surgery goes by many names: premium cataract surgery, laser cataract surgery, multifocal lens cataract surgery, etc. But the point is that you are trying to leave someone with maximum glasses independence. And it is my view that the philosophy of the process is more important than a particular piece of equipment or intraocular lens. The key to good results is obtaining quality measurements to determine what is possible, then understanding a person’s goals regarding outcome and formulating the best plan to reach those goals. This is where my passion lies and is the real focus of my ophthalmology practice.
In general, I believe nearly everyone should be able to have a good result from cataract surgery. If you have had cataract surgery and are not satisfied with the results, I want to see you as a patient and try to get you to the finish line. A special area of interest and subject of clinical research in our practice is complex patients who have unsatisfactory outcomes from prior surgery. In many cases, even those who have had cataract surgery decades ago, prior to modern advances, can still achieve a high level of visual quality and glasses independence.
At WK Eye Institute we are constantly measuring outcomes to drive quality improvement and investing in the latest technology to provide high excellent visual outcomes.
