This week's recommendation ALBUM TITLE: aloha ARTIST: Son Litt le RELEASED: January 2020 GENRE: Rhythm & Blues, Soul BIO: Singer-songwriter and producer Son Litt le hails from Pennsylvania. aloha, his 3rd album was writt en in only 8 days aft er a bunch of demos got cooked in a computer glitch.

WHAT TO EXPECT: Modern retro. Son takes the vintage R & B style with soul infl uences adding digital beats and synths over acoustic instruments. Curiously, none of the track titles use upper case lett ers on which Son plays almost every instrument. It is an album that does not dominate the listener, instead, it complements the listener’s space. WHAT WE LIKE: Upon the creative process for aloha Son commented that "lett ing go can be a scary prospect... (it) opens up space for something new in your life." Perhaps the lett ing go and the making of space was the computer glitch creating a scramble for material, perhaps it was Son allowing someone else to produce aloha. Enter producer Renaud Letang (Feist, Manu Chao), allowing the intimacy and soul of the work to be easily found with interesting nuances on tracks and transitions. The digital beats, synths, and eff ects are very human and subtly balanced low in the mix to retain the warmth of the music. With a voice so silky and sublime, he does not need to growl or power into the mic with his lyrics covering, mostly, life's ups and downs. On vinyl, the warm and crackle will most likely enhance aloha a further notch up. STANDOUT TRACKS: hey rose, about her. again., belladonna PERFECT FOR: Dancing slowly. Lett ing go to let the music grow on you. LISTEN IN IF YOU LIKE: The Teskey Brothers, Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar Recommended by Dan McGill.
