OPERA Young Artists of Voice
Die Fledermaus Music by Johann Strauss II Libretto by Karl Haffner and Richard Genée Directed by Lawrence Vincent BYU Philharmonic conducted by Kory Katseanes Mistaken identity, revenge, and practical jokes form the basis of this popular 19th-century operetta, a comical romp through the (mis)fortunes of Baron von Eisenstein with a cast of colorful characters—including one who is eventually dressed as a bat, or “Fledermaus.” This delightful production featuring top vocal talent from the BYU School of Music illuminates the indulgence of 1890s Viennese society with sophisticated wit, impressive melodies, and of course those famous lovely waltzes.

The Nightingale
By Hans Christian Andersen Adapated for the stage by Timothy Mason Directed by Julia Ashworth and Kori Wakamatsu
The dignity and charm of ancient China’s poetic ritual are vividly depicted in this tale of an emperor who rejects the lyrical song of a humble nightingale for the artificial splendor of a mechanical bird. Performed in English and Mandarin and influenced by the traditions of Peking Opera, The Nightingale invites audience members to ponder the worth of the things we value most: “Do not be deceived by glitter and show. A true voice and a gentle heart are all you will ever need.”

Forget what you think you know about relationships. Microburst Theatre is about to give you short, intense bursts of insight into exactly what love can be.

The Light in the Piazza Book by Craig Lucas Music and lyrics by Adam Guettel Directed by Scott Eckern Music direction by Mark Johnson Choreography by Lisa Stoddard Set in Italy in 1953, an American mother and daughter set out to explore a piazza filled with art, history, and sunlight. When a summer breeze whisks the girl’s hat into the hands of a handsome young Florentine, the resulting encounter sparks an unexpected romance and forces the mother to reconsider not only her daughter’s future but her own life’s dreams— and regrets. The Light in the Piazza explores love in its most tender and complicated forms. Winner of six Tony Awards, including best original musical score by Adam Guettel, grandson of Broadway composer Richard Rodgers. 37

Cymbeline
Noir Mystery Adaptation
By William Shakespeare Lightheartedly adapted and directed by Teresa Dayley Love

Shakespeare’s adventurous romance gets the double treatment—and a happy ending—in two special adaptations: as a fairy tale suited for youngsters and as a noir mystery perfect for the young at heart. While exploring Shakespeare’s common themes of mistaken identity, innocence wronged, and jealousy, Cymbeline tells the story about a princess in a pickle with a banished husband, a villainous queen, and “a whole lotta mayhem” in Britain. Caution: audience participation ahead! 38

A Man for All Seasons By Robert Bolt Directed by David Morgan Conscience and corruption collide in this powerful historical portrait of Sir Thomas More—counselor to King Henry VIII and Lord Chancellor of England. More resists entreaties to condone the king’s divorce from Catherine of Aragon, marriage to Anne Boleyn, and separation from the church in Rome. Though he is ultimately condemned by his silence, his unwavering dedication to principle makes him a true “man for all seasons.” A Man for All Seasons is presented by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.

Adapted for the stage by Melissa Leilani Larsen Directed by Barta Lee Heiner
Mon., March 31 4:00 p.m.
Two hundred years after the first publication of Pride and Prejudice, BYU Theatre takes this beloved story to the stage. Jane Austen’s humorous narrative, set in early 19th-century England, follows the five Bennet sisters, of marriageable age and modest means, as they confront unreasonable social barriers, vanity, and the impropriety of their own family. The sisters also find that “next to being married, a girl likes being crossed in love a little now and again.”
Tues.–Fri., April 1–4 7:30 p.m. ASL interpreted Thurs., March 27 $15–17 $5 off weeknights/$4–5 off weekends with BYU or student ID $2 off for senior citizens or BYU alumni $9–10 matinees On sale Tues., Feb. 18
The Selfish Giant By Oscar Wilde Adapted for the stage by Teresa Dayley Love Directed by Jennifer and Nat Reed In this allegorical play about Jesus’ love, adapted from an Oscar Wilde children’s story, a self-centered giant learns about friendship, faith, and the power to change. At first unwilling to share his beautiful garden with the children who long to play in it, the giant finds happiness—and the secret to a thriving garden—when he welcomes the youngsters onto his patch of earth. Using puppets and live actors, BYU Theatre presents a unique look at this poignant tale. Visit byuarts.com to learn more about Playing with Performance activities prior to matinee performances. T H E AT R E A N D M E D I A A R T S S P E C I A L E V E N T S Oedipus the King Westminster College Greek Theatre Festival
In Sophocles’s classic Athenian tragedy, Oedipus sets out to discover the source of the plague affecting Thebes by searching for the killer of King Laius. After issuing an edict, calling witnesses, and listening to prophets, he learns the haunting truth that then propels him to his demise. With his virtues and vices Oedipus embodies characteristics often associated with ancient Athens, and in many ways the intended audience was watching itself onstage. Like so many Greek tragedies, this play tells universal truths about our concerns with identity and how we relate to others—and to the divine.
