Mormon Arts Ball, 1974 Throughout the 1960s and 70s, the College of Fine Arts and Communications sponsored a night of concerts, performances and dancing in the B. F. Larsen Gallery of the Harris Fine Arts Center. In that spirit of collaboration, this season we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Harris Fine Arts Center with the Festival of the Arts Gala, on Fri., Apr. 3, 2015. FROM THIS PLACE INTO ALL THE WORLD: CELEBRATING 50 YEARS Place and performance in the arts share an intimate relationship. Place is where we gather—in the sheer presence of each other—to seek that magic only the arts can give. In the rhythm of the dialogue between place and performance we travel to a timeless space where our aspirations are elevated and our understanding increases. It’s a place of wonder and joy, of beauty and truth. It’s a place where we can continually make and remake ourselves. For 50 years audiences have come to the Franklin S. Harris Fine Arts Center to find such spaces—worlds that confirm and question, expand and enlighten, worlds never before discovered. In those 50 years the finest artists from around the world have captivated us with their virtuosity. In those 50 years our students and faculty have gifted us with performances of incredible artistic excellence and toured around the world to share the spirit and values of BYU. Our 50th anniversary season promises to take you to places you have yet to experience. Come see and celebrate 50 years of growth and accomplishment. Come help us launch a foundation for the future as we remember and give thanks for all that has occurred during five truly remarkable decades. Join us on a journey that will take you from this place into all the world!

INTO ALL THE WORLD When BYU President Franklin S. Harris established the College of Fine Arts in 1925—the first fine arts college in the Intermountain West—the majority of higher education institutions in the nation did not offer fine arts programs.

4 BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY / COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS AND COMMUNICATIONS

Harris, a driving force in expanding BYU’s academic programs, library, art collection, and service to the world, believed it was necessary to place the fine arts on equal footing with the sciences and humanities. The college’s first academic programs of art, music, and speech were housed in a variety of barracks, buildings, and shared facilities across campus and in the community. Faculty shared offices and students rehearsed in any space they could find, including janitorial closets. Gerrit de Jong Jr., the founding dean of the college, lamented, “The foxes have holes, and the birds of the heaven have nests, but the faculty of our college hath not where to lay its head.”

After numerous delays in the approval for a fine arts center, ground was broken in June 1962 on two acres on the new upper campus, where a productive pear orchard had once stood. William L. Pereira, the distinguished Los Angeles architect who designed the center, called it, “the most comprehensive building of its kind at an American university.” On April 3, 1965, President Joseph Fielding Smith of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, dedicated the Franklin S. Harris Fine Arts Center—named in honor of BYU’s visionary president who served for 24 years. In his dedicatory prayer, President Smith said: Provision has been made that in this building students and faculty produce, create and perform works

which bring lasting inspiration to thousands. . . . The faculty and academic programs train and teach the future leaders of the Church to recognize and understand the arts and their place in the abundant life.

Annually, more than 500,000 patrons attend hundreds of performances, exhibitions, and other public events sponsored by the college, while millions more enjoy its radio, television, and Internet broadcasts.

The opening of Harris Fine Arts Center launched a new era of creative collaboration and interdisciplinary activity for fine arts students and faculty. Enrollment in arts and communication classes increased 25% the following year. Today the center serves more than 8,000 students in classes each year. The College of Fine Arts and Communications has expanded its academic programs to include animation, communications, dance, media arts, theatre, and the Museum of Art.

The college’s students and faculty are internationally recognized for their creative and scholarly accomplishments through publications, competitions, and worldwide touring programs. As we commemorate the Harris Fine Arts Center’s 50th anniversary, we reflect on the vision of President Harris who said: Behold the greatest university campus in all the world—in embryo. Truly the campus is the setting of what will undoubtedly be the greatest university in the world, a place to train for our leaders.

demiree eastman “Going to Beijing, China with Contemporary Dance Theatre was an experience that I will remember for the rest of my life. There is a special feeling in China. I can tell that the people are genuinely good. They have good hearts and good minds. If I could, I would rewind time and do it all over again and again.” » Learn more about Demi at dance.byu.edu/demi
