or 86 años estuvo ocupado día y noche por trabajadores de la Fundidora Monterrey. Actualmente, asignado como Museo de Sitio de Arqueología Industrial, el Parque Fundidora es visitado por los regiomontanos y turistas debido a que conjunta espacios recreativos, culturales, deportivos y de fomento económico dentro de un escenario de maquinaria, que no nos permite olvidar el origen trabajador que caracteriza al neoleonés.

FundidoraPark: icon of our region.

uring 86 years it was busy day and night with the constant activity of the workers of the steel mill Fundidora Monterrey. Nowadays, as an Industrial Archeology Site Museum, the Fundidora Park is visited by regios and tourists, as it combines spaces dedicated to recreation, culture, sports and economic development among a machinery landscape, that doesn’t let us forget our roots as workers, one of the main characteristics of the regio spirit.

PABELLÓN SOPLADORES. Anteriormente eran máquinas de volantes giratorios que abastecían de aire a las cinco estufas del Horno Alto No. 1. Ahora, es el escenario para encuentros y actividades culturales.

BLOWERS PAVILLION. Previously they were machines with spinning wheels that fed air to the five stoves of the High Oven No. 1.

Now it is the stage for meetings and cultural activities.

BULEVAR ACERO. Con 3.4 km de largo, este bulevar es sede de importantes eventos deportivos y una excelente ruta para recorrer todo el parque caminando, trotando, patinando o en bicicleta que ahí mismo puedes rentar.

STEEL BOULEVARD. 3.4 km long, this boulevard is the site of important sporting events and an excellent route to traverse the whole park walking, running, biking or rollerblading with equipment available for rental.

CINETECA – FOTOTECA. Este espacio cultural forma parte del Centro de las Artes de Nuevo León, y cuenta con dos salas de proyección, una sala audiovisual acondicionada para 50 personas, tienda de libros y regalos y servicio de cafetería.

Además de proyectar cine alternativo y muestras fílmicas nacionales e internacionales, presenta exposiciones fotográficas temporales.

CINETECA – FOTOTECA. This cultural space is part of the Nuevo Leon Arts Center, and has two movie screens, an audiovisual room with a 50 person capacity, bookstore/ gift shop and coffee shop service. Besides showing alternative/art films and national and international festival selections, this space is home to temporal photographic exhibits.

TEATRO DEL CENTRO DE LAS ARTES. Ubicado en el segundo piso de la Pinacoteca, este escenario tiene capacidad para 350 espectadores y es sede no sólo de montajes teatrales, sino también para conferencias y espectáculos de música y danza.

ARTS CENTER THEATER. Located on the second floor of the Pinacoteca, this venue

has a 350 person capacity and it’s the site of not only stage plays, but also conferences, as well as music and dance shows.

PINACOTECA. Tiene dos salas de exposiciones, mediateca, taller infantil y una bóveda que resguarda el patrimonio plástico de Nuevo León, como el mural “Alegoría a la Producción” de Fermín Revueltas. Además, es un excelente escenario para realizar performances y presentaciones de arte efímero.

PINACOTECA. Two exhibition halls, a media library, a children’s workshop and a vault storing Nuevo Leon’s pictorial legacy, like the “Allegory of Production” by Fermín Revueltas.

This is also an excellent stage for performance and ephemeral art exhibitions.

OTROS ESPACIOS. El Parque Fundidora también alberga un importante centro temático recreativo como Plaza Sésamo.

Dos grandes recintos para presentar eventos masivos: El Auditorio Fundidora con capacidad para más de 16,000 espectadores y la Arena Monterrey con cabida de 17,599 personas. Además, cuenta con El Centro Internacional de Negocios Monterrey A.C. (CINTERMEX) y dos hoteles.

OTHER FACILITIES. The Fundidora Park is also home of an important thematic park, Plaza Sésamo (based on the Latin American version of Sesame Street), and two great spectacle halls: The Fundidora Auditorium, with more than 16,000 person capacity, and the Monterrey Arena, with a 17,599 person capacity. Besides that, it includes the International Business Center Monterrey A.C. (CINTERMEX) and two hotels.

Veamos algunos de los puntos a explorar...

illa de Santiago is the nearest window from Monterrey, for fun and adventure in Nuevo Leon. Its name is a constant presence for those who enjoy outdoor activities, watersports and extreme sports, or maybe just a nice evening with the family. Let’s see some of the spots we can explore…

LOS CAVAZOS. Siguiendo nuestro camino por la Carretera Nacional, encontramos el boulevard comercial Los Cavazos: El lugar perfecto para adquirir productos artesanales, como muebles, macetas, artículos de cuero y charrería.

PRESA LA BOCA. El paseo familiar para las tardes de fin de semana. Pesca, paseos en lancha, renta de caballos, restaurantes de pescados y mariscos.

LOS CAVAZOS. Following the Federal Highway or Carretera Nacional, we find the commercial boulevard of Los Cavazos: the perfect place to buy handcrafts, like furniture, gardening pots, leather and charrería items.

LA BOCA DAM. This is the usual family activity for a weekend evening. Fishing, boating, horse rental, seafood restaurants.

CASCADA COLA DE CABALLO. A 10 minutos de la cabecera municipal puedes contemplar la hermosa caída de agua de 25 metros de

altura, descansar con la familia, y preparar la tradicional carne asada. O si prefieres descansar cómodamente, ahí mismo se encuentra un hotel con restaurant, suites, centro de convenciones e incluso un bungee.

COLA DE CABALLO WATERFALLS. A ten minutes drive from downtown Santiago you can contemplate the beautiful 25 meters high waterfall, rest with the family and prepare the traditional carne asada (barbecue). Or if you want a comfortable rest, there is a hotel with restaurant, suites, convention center and a bungee.

Ecoturismo

En Santiago se encuentran parajes naturales de una gran belleza. Para llegar a algunos de ellos sólo se requiere caminar, pero otros implican equipo y guías especializados, que pueden acompañarte e instruirte en las técnicas necesarias de cañonismo, rappel, etc. Busca en la red, la pagina es www. santiago.gob.mx, y encontrarás a quienes conocen el camino. Tienes que dedicarle una buena cantidad de horas y tener una condición física aceptable. Aprovecha, es la temporada en que estas aventuras se encuentran disponibles, pues en septiembre las lluvias dificultan el acceso.

Ecotourism

Santiago has natural spots of a great beauty.

To reach some of them only implies walking, others involve different adventures and effort, with special guides and equipment, that can take you there and teach the needed techniques like canyoneering, rappelling, etc.

Search the web, the page is www.santiago. gob.mx, and you will find the experts who know the way. You will have to dedicate some hours to it and also have an acceptable fitness level. Seize the opportunity, this is the season when those adventures are available, before the September rains make the access difficult.

CAÑÓN DEL CHIPITÍN. Un recorrido de 6 horas incluyendo caminata en montaña y práctica de rappel para llegar a cristalinas pozas y cascadas. Los paisajes convierten todo en una aventura.

CHIPITIN CANYON. A six hours trek including mountain hiking and rappelling to reach waterholes and waterfalls. The landscape turns everything into an adventure.

HIDROFOBIA. Un recorrido de 7 horas.

Empezando por la Cascada del Chipitín, una aventura de cañonismo con rappel, espectaculares saltos al agua, descenso en toboganes naturales, con agua fría que despierta al espíritu más cansado.

HIDROFOBIA. A seven hours trek. Beginnig at Chipitin Waterfalls, this is an adventure comprising hiking, canyoneering, rappelling, spectacular jumps into cold water, natural slides, with the cool water refreshing the most jaded spirit.

CAÑÓN DEL LABERINTO Y EL SALTO. El Laberinto es un cañón estrecho donde se

chaleco salvavidas, practicas el rappel junto a cascadas, desciendes a cuevas, exploras cañones de piedra caliza. En algún momento incluso hay que pasar por un río subterráneo para continuar el camino hasta Las Adjuntas. Te aseguramos que valdrá la pena enfrentar las maravillas de Santiago, el municipio donde la aventura siempre está cerca.

After a hike among the San Cristóbal Canyon you will find El Salto, a natural hole to which it is possible to descend using the rappel technique.

MATACANES. A ten hours trek, one of the most original and beautiful you can find, a world class adventure frequently visited by international explorers. Jump into the river water from a 12 meters height, cross rivers with your flotation vest, practice rappelling along waterfalls, descend into caves, explore limestone canyons. As part of the experience, you will even cross an underground river to make your way to the town of Las Adjuntas.

Desde la entrada nos vemos transportados a un mundo donde todo es más pequeño, pero la diversión se hace mayor. Varias calles se abren ante nosotros con fachadas reconocibles. Son las instituciones, tiendas y servicios de la vida real, recreadas perfectamente para que los niños de hasta 12 años de edad puedan divertirse, jugar a trabajar, crear sus propias golosinas, periódicos, espectáculos, manejar autos, ser doctores, bomberos, etc. Hay más de 70 diferentes ocupaciones y oficios que les permiten ganar su salario en kidzos, la moneda oficial de Kidzania. n Lázaro Cárdenas Avenue you can find the door to a whole city inside ours. There, under an always starry sky, kids combine their happiness and energy on a place where they can play at being grown ups: Kidzania.

From the start we are transported to a world where everything is smaller, but fun becomes bigger. Many streets open before us with known facades. They are the institutions, stores and services from real life, as perfect replicas built for kids up to 12 years old, so they can have fun, pretending to be salespersons, barbers, creating their own candy, newspapers, or shows, driving cars, being doctors, firefighters, etc. There are more than 70 professions and occupations that allow them to earn their salary in kidzos, the official currency of Kidzania. They can save it or use it to buy services and products like souvenirs or foodstuffs in the stores.

There’s always an emphasis on the value

and importance of the different jobs and activities, introducing the kids to the idea of being independent subjects earning their place inside a economy, and involving their total participation, the use of their own hands and creativity.

Kidzania is a safe space, where parents can have confidence on his children being immersed on fun and educative activities, without violent overtones. Meanwhile, parents can stay in their own special area, or they can also be spectators of the theatre or tv shows made by their kids.

How did Kidzania arrive here? It was through the creators of La Ciudad de los Niños, located in México City. entro del estilo de vida regio se guardan costumbres que lo distinguen, como es su pujanza en el trabajo y crecimiento, pero también los momentos familiares y de recreación en donde busca un espacio que envuelva lo nuestro.

Entre esos espacios se encuentra, ocupando un lugar privilegiado, el restaurante Las Palomas, situado en el centro de Villa de Santiago, a 40 minutos de Monterrey. Desde su arquitectura y decoración hasta la música en vivo, hallamos un lugar que te acoge y lleva a disfrutar cada platillo que posee el sazón de la región.

Su nombre surgió a partir de la Hacienda Las Palomas, la cual existió en 1857 y fue la principal en la zona. Las Palomas siguen la tradición, portando con orgullo su nombre desde hace 37 años. Dentro de sus especialidades están el Plato Mexicano y la Tampiqueña. El primero consta de un chile relleno de carne, acompañado de asado de puerco, arroz, frijoles y quesadillas. El segundo es un filete de res rodeado de arroz, frijoles y quesadillas. Desde luego las carnes son cortes finos. Además podrás encontrar pescados y pollo.

Para dar el cierre a tu gusto aquí puedes probar dulces tradicionales norestenses como el piloncillo, chilacayote, camote, las famosas glorias y empanadas de guayaba o manzana. Saliendo del restaurante puedes tomarte un rato en la plaza central del pueblo, armonizada por la tranquilidad del sector.

In that category we find, occupying a privileged place, the restaurant Las Palomas, located in downtown Villa de Santiago, at a forty minutes drive from Monterrey. From its architecture and decoration to the live music, we find a place that welcomes and invites you to enjoy every dish containing the regional taste.

Its name comes from the Hacienda Las Palomas, founded in 1857 and which once was the main one in the region. Las Palomas keeps the tradition, since it was proudly named that way 37 years ago. As part of their special dishes we find El Plato Mexicano and La Tampique単a. The first one has a meat - stuffed chili, along with roasted pork, rice, beans, and quesadillas. The second one is a beef fillet, surrounded with rice, beans and quesadillas. Of course, all meats are the finest cuts. You can also find fish and chicken dishes.

To end with joy you can also taste traditional norestense (northeastern) candy like piloncillo (brown sugar candy), Chilacayote (pie melon), camote (sweet potatoes), the famous glorias (milk candy) and guava o apple empanadas (stuffed pastries). After exiting the restaurant, you can rest for a while in the central plaza of the town, harmonized with the local tranquility.

l Museo Metropolitano de Monterrey presentó como parte de sus exposiciones temporales, la primer individual en nuestra ciudad de uno de los más grandes artistas mexicanos, José Luis Cuevas. Nacido en 1934, marcó con su obra la ruptura ante los muralistas, desarrollando con sus pinturas, dibujos y grabados una larga carrera que ahora abarca la creación de esculturas. Explore Monterrey tuvo la oportunidad de entrevistarlo.

SU OBRA PRESENTE. “Estoy trabajando en unas cabezas de gran formato. Están un poco basadas en las cabezas olmecas, pero son autorretratos. Pienso seguir trabajando en esculturas gigantescas. Es curioso que en mis comienzos yo atacara al gigantismo mexicano, como los murales. En aquel tiempo dije: “una pequeña acuarela de Paul Klee es más importante que todos los metros cuadrados que pinte Diego Rivera”.

Le daban mayor importancia al aspecto político, cuando en realidad el principal problema que hay que resolver en el arte es el estético”.

“La idea de las esculturas surgió estando con mi esposa Beatriz del Carmen en El Cairo, y salió el comentario de cómo me gustaría hacer una pirámide, o por lo menos obras que tuvieran esa magnitud, esas dimensiones”.

LA MEMORIA. “Yo he tenido una de las memorias más prodigiosas de México.

Pero últimamente ya no es tan prodigiosa como antes. Entonces tengo a mi esposa al lado. Ella lleva una especie de diario de los lugares donde estamos. Recurro a esas libretas para reconstruir esos días. Otro de los aspectos importantes en mi trabajo es el hecho de tomar fotos. Si las cosas vividas no quedan registradas por una cámara fotográfica, es como si no hubieran pasado”.

EL FUTURO. “¿Qué estaré haciendo dentro de 10 años? No tengo la menor idea.

Cuando todos los días entro a mi estudio, hay una extraña emoción. Digamos que voy a hacer un gran dibujo. Nunca hago bocetos previos, sino que trabajo sin tener una idea muy clara de lo que voy a hacer.

Los escritores han hablado mucho del terror frente a la hoja en blanco. Sienten una especie de angustia, el horror al vacío. Y así surge en mí una especie de inseguridad ante el fracaso. Y digo una vez que termine esta superficie, todo estará poblado de personajes. A lo mejor en lo que voy a pintar, dibujar o grabar estoy proyectando una serie de ideas hacia el futuro.

En ese presente ya está contenido el futuro”.

LA MIRADA. “En mi obra los ojos siempre están presentes.

El espectador ve la obra, pero la obra también está viendo al espectador”.

he Metropolitan Museum of Monterrey presented, as part of its temporal exhibits, the first individual exposition in our city of one of the greatest mexican artists, José Luis Cuevas.

Born in 1934, marked with his work a rupture with the muralists, developing in his paintings, drawings and engravures a long career that now reaches into the creation of sculptures. Explore Monterrey had the chance to interview this master painter.

HIS PRESENT WORK. “I’m working in heads of big format. There are based a little in Olmec heads, but they are self portraits. I plan to keep working on giant sculptures. It is curious that in my beginnings I attacked Mexican gigantism, like the muralists. At that time I said: “a small watercolor by Paul Klee is more important than all the square meters painted by Diego Rivera”. The muralists gave more importance to the political aspect, when in reality the main problem to be solved in art is the artistic one”.

“The idea for this sculptures appeared while I was with my wife Beatriz del Carmen at El Cairo, and I had the comment of how I would like to make a pyramid, or at least works with that magnitude, those dimensions”.

THE MEMORY. “I’ve had one of the most prodigious memories in Mexico. But lately it 26 EXPLOREMONTERREY

hasn’t been as prodigious as before. Then I have my wife by my side. She keeps a sort of diary of the places where we are. I resort to those notebooks to reconstruct the days.

Other of the important aspects of my work is picture taking. If the lived things are not registered by a photographic camera, it is like they never happened”.

THE FUTURE. “What will I be doing ten years from now? I don’t have the slightest idea.

When every day I enter my studio, there is a strange emotion. Let’s say I’m going to make a big drawing. I never make previous sketches, I work without a very clear idea of what I’ll do.

Writers have talked a lot about the terror they feel at the empty page. They feel a sort of anxiety, a horror at vacuum. And it appears in me a sort of insecurity in the face of failure.

And I say, when I finish this surface, it will be populated with characters. Maybe in what I

paint, draw or engrave there is a projection of a series of ideas towards the future. In that present, the future is already contained” THE SIGHT. “In my work there are always eyes present. The spectator sees the work, but the work is also seeing the spectator”.

l musical “Mamma Mia!”, basado en las canciones del extinto grupo sueco ABBA, se presentó en nuestra ciudad el pasado 27, 28 y 29 de junio, así como los días 1 y 2 de julio. Los 31 elementos en escena, además

de nueve músicos y los 30 miembros del equipo técnico, hicieron del musical un gran éxito. Fue una especie de concierto de rock con una historia cómica, muy visual y familiar, que independientemente de haber sido presentada en inglés con subtítulos proyectados en una pantalla en la parte superior del escenario, fue sencilla de entender para quienes desconocían el idioma, pues las canciones de ABBA son conocidas por todo el mundo y sus letras aun están vigentes.

Mamma Mia! es la historia de una joven que en la víspera de su boda decide descubrir la identidad de su padre. Ese pequeño detalle juntará a tres hombres que forman parte del pasado de su madre en una paradisíaca isla griega, misma que visitaron por última vez veinte años atrás. Todo esto acompañado con las inmortales canciones de ABBA, entre las que destacan “Mamma mia”, “Dancing Queen”, “The winner takes it all”, “Money, Money Money”, “Take a chance on me” y “Super Trouper”.

“Mamma Mia!” se estrenó en 1999 en Londres. Desde entonces, 11 compañías han presentado este musical en Alemania, Australia, Bélgica, Canadá, China, Corea del Sur, Escocia, España, Estonia, Irlanda, Japón, Nueva Zelanda, Países Bajos, Portugal, Singapur, Sudáfrica, Suecia y Suiza, así como varias ciudades de EEUU.

amma Mia!, the musical based on the songs by the extinct swedish group ABBA, was staged in our city on June 27th, 28th, 29th and also on July 1st and 2nd. 31 cast members, nine musicians and 30 technical staff members made the musical a success. It was a sort of mix of a rock concert and a comedy play, visually rich, family oriented and easy to follow in spite of being an english language production with subtitles projected on a screen occupying the high part of the stage, because Abba songs are internationally known and their lyrics and themes are still present.

Mamma Mia! tells the story of a young woman which on the eve of her wedding decides to discover his father’s identity. This small detail will bring three men from her mother’s past to a paradisiacal greek island, the same one they visited twenty years ago. All of this with the accompaniment of everlasting ABBA songs like “Mamma mia”, “Dancing Queen”, “The winner takes it all”, “Money, Money Money”, “Take a chance on me” and “Super Trouper”.

Mamma Mía! had its London debut the year 1999, and has since been presented by eleven companies in Germany, Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, South Korea, Scotland, Spain, Estonia, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Portugal, Singapore, South Africa, Sweden and Switzerland, as well as in many cities in the United States.

PARQUE ECOTURÍSTICO COLA DE CABALLO Se localiza en el municipio de Villa de Santiago, 40 km al sur de Monterrey por la carretera federal 85, en el poblado conocido como El Cercado.
